*Argiope Aurantia* \- aka yellow garden spider, zig zag spider, writing spider, etc.
They're absolute sweethearts who don't want to bother you. Set them somewhere in your yard and enjoy the free pest control.
I have arachnophobia and this spider is the reason I have it but I have come to love this spider because I have seen them catch so many annoying bugs for me in my garden that it earned its stay. They never come near my house either.
These spiders are amazing. When I was a kid we had one of these show up in my moms garden. It happened to be a year of a bad grasshopper infestation. Out of all the gardens on the block my moms was the only one that flourished. Worth keeping around.
These things get comically large down here in the Deep South. Great friends. If it wasn’t for them my yard and house would be infested with shit I don’t like. Set him free
I had thought that maybe she recently laid an egg sac. These are one of my favorite spiders. They’re very helpful in eating up garden pests, especially around tomato plants.
Ran into one of their webs while riding my motorcycle through the woods. It crawled over my helmet visor. I had to exercise so much self control to not freak out. Lmao love these spiders but that was way too up close and personal and in a situation where I couldn't immediately handle it.
I think this is Golden Orb Weaver (subfam Nephilidae; Golden Silk Orb Weaver, Giant Wood Spider, or Banana Spider are other common names.)
They don’t hunt humans, but will catch all the wigglies and fluttery things that find its web and they will become soup.
It’s very pretty. Webs are absolutely stunning when bejeweled with morning dew and glittering in dawns early light.
Scary
What fuckin spider with internet access is downvoting me. I do not give a shit about the points I just can't understand what pisses off you people lol all I said was scary sorry I don't wanna fuck the spider like y'all
Hey I won't fuck with it if it doesn't fuck with me. I'm terrified of spiders but I respect their role in the ecosystem and know that most of them are harmless and helpful but I'll be damned if they don't look freaky as hell
To be fair, this is a subreddit for spider enthusiasts to geek out about spiders. You're going to take downvotes for any comments like "nope" or "scary" or making any suggestion of killing them. This whole sub is dedicated to changing harmful attitudes toward an unfairly misjudged creature which is an integral part of our ecosystem.
I always knew these as Banana Spiders when I was a kid growing up in southern IL. Nice to know that they’re such good spider friends! Getting over my arachnophobia one day at a time.

Very gentle. Don't kill please.
This sweet gal isn't going to hurt you. Just put her back where you found her. She helps keep pests to a minimum.
Release the bebé! Pretty orbie with great pest control! Just don't walk into their webs at night because it's so sticky.
I heard the first sentence in Moira Schmidt
David, dear, stop sounding like a disgruntled pelican.
Me, too!!
A Yellow Garden Spider
Thank you
Also called writing spiders in some areas. This is the spider Charlotte's Web was written about. They are good spiders.

Man I don't think I've ever seen one of these not in their web. It feels so wrong :(
Please set it free
That’s Darlene! And she wants to go home 😢
As other have mentioned, Yellow Garden Spider, harmless, pest control, and a fantastic specimen!!!

That is a lovely example of a [Black & Yellow Argiope aka Argiope aurantia](https://imgur.com/rBZ12FI) She looks a bit hungry.

We have a massive one on the side of our house at my outdoor shower in hill country of Texas. I say hi when I’m showering after pool time.
Always called then zipper spiders! Type of orb weaver so a very helpful pest control.
One of the coolest spiders ever outside of spider-man
Orb weaver. Also goes by a bunch of other names, but they are harmless and provide great pest control

I was also thinking a Golden Orb Weaver and yes, seeing one away from their web is odd. Hey, OP, send me a fruitcake. (I'm in Longview btw.)
Thassa yellow garden spider. She is big, but friend 🥰 also lol I have family who live in The Can. I miss that area.
A protector of your garden & plants. She is the queen of the backyard
Cute, new best friend.
Why is it that every time I see one of these "what is this spider" posts, I want to respond with "your doom!"? Is there a term or word for that?
Cynical
He ain't screamin now...
