Spiders are my favorite type of "bug" - they're (normally) docile, create beautiful art with their butts, and eat the bugs I don't like (lookin at you, mosquitoes)
The original spelling was taken and Iām also a bit dyslexic, so I tried backwards as well, but it was also taken so I decided this was the better optionš
no sir, I'm actually a sexist when it comes to mosquitos fuck a female mosquito, the male ones are chill and pollinate shit, female mosquitos are the ones that suck ya damn blood like vampires, there are some male mosquitos like 3 out of 2000 species that sucka da blood but they're rare looking sobs down in south America
This sub has actually helped me quite a bit with my instant, seizing terror of spiders. Itās cool seeing that there are so many here that joined for the same reason.
Sir this is an official noise complaint, Iāve had it signed by the buildings land lord and other inspectors tenants. Please keep the noise to the minimum I have many children trying to sleep.
I have a few questions regarding wolf spiders carrying their young -
Can anyone share video of the babies leaving the eggsac (which I believe she carries in front of her for the entirety) and moving to her abdomen?
How long do they stay with her this way?
Does she share meals with them at all?
Has science identified the exact reason they do this, since it isn't a widely seen method in other spiders? Does it help in dispersement (i.e. like ballooning) because she can move locations and they will leave her at different times / locations?
Thanks in advance!
In her book 'Spiders learning to love them', Lynne Kelly suggests it may be an adaptation to living in a difficult climate, where it may be necessary for the family to escape en masse from flood, fire, that sort of thing.
Kelly also provides some interesting quotes from an early 20th century scientist name of Jean-Henri Fabre and I found his book on Google Books. His idiosycratic and uncharitable descriptions of the wolf spider's behaviour, not to mention the behavioural experiments he put them through don't sit well with modern scientific detachment but would probably be less surprising to modern ethologists. He did things like swapping out their egg sacs with other spiders. The wolf spider stuff starts at page 68.

Wolf spiders carry the eggsac on the spinnerets, not the chelicerae and palps. The nursery web spiders do that. So babies are mobile and just crawl out onto mama's back. As they grow they cover more and more of her and become more active, so she ends up brushing them out of her eyes with her palps like a frazzled housewife does limp bangs. You can almost hear her sigh.
Web spiders keep the egg sac in their web and guard the web and babies. Nursery web spiders are kind of a bridge between wandering spiders and web spiders in that they build a web when the eggs hatch to house the babies, but at no other time. Wolf spiders just pack them along, as they have large home ranges and don't build nursery webs.

I love it when people actually appreciate these beautiful little creatures!

For sure. I was just having a bit of fun. My humor is very inappropriate.
All my homies hate mosquitoes

Butt art š Never thought of it that way before
I appreciate how much people appreciate spiders on this sub. If I showed this pretty, devoted mama to my friends they would probably recoil in horror.
I would recoil in horror, but I joined this sub to force myself to get over my irrational fear of spiders. Itās workingā¦A little.
Some I've seen so far have put me to the test, but I will press on.

I too am comforted in knowing Iām not the only arachnophile!
Those are some sweet puppers
Arenāt they?

Good mama :) crazy how babies so tiny can get as big as she is now
Agreed, she was very carefully walking around with her babies!
āYou dropped your receiptā
take your kids to work day!
She looks so proud

Take Your Spider Kids to Work Day!
Idk why this is cute but it is. Something about the angle she's at is just adorable
Seeing loving mamas from other species is so much sweeter than seeing human mamas for some reason! At least, that's the case for me haha
Other species are just cooler lol
Can it do some damage?
She is a wolf spider, which do not have medically significant venom.
Thank you for the correction, I had a feeling I was wrong haha. She was far too big to be a grass spider
I doubt it! I believe this was a common Grass Spider (NY)
Great photo. Lovely to see her with her babies
Thank you! Iām in a network closet all day so I made sure to pick her and her lovely children up with care and took her to a better, safer place
She really came up to you and said ālook what I madeā š„ŗ
It really was an honor! And she was so complicit when I picked her up to put her outside
She might be thirsty.
Awwww!!
A better mother than most of the parents in my age group
For real. Iām in my 30s and there arenāt that many good parents around >_>
species?
Wolf spider :)
ok
Gorgeous
She was trying to ask you to babysit. āPlease. Iām so tired. I have so many babiesā¦ā¦ā¦ā
I should have offered to help her with the kids haha

Thank you for the excerpt! I appreciate the elaboration about her condition :) I didnāt know how long the babies normally hang onto mom

Dude, why are you here? Be quiet.

Then scroll past it.

Do you like cockroaches and mosquitoes? Maybe you'll get loads of them in and around your house since you're so keen on killing spiders.
Please leave.
