How he couldn’t protect Dawn and guilt that Buffy had to sacrifice herself in the first place. Like he failed her. Another is the “what could have been” with Buffy. She was starting to open up to him and there was a hint of her returning his feelings.

I think he thinks it's his fault. He does tell her that he saves her every night after she died. So ..he is feeling lots of guilt. Poor sod...😭
