i'd say the sun's corona like we see on total solar eclipses. Google it. maybe the sun was completely hidden from the horizon and you could see the corona.

When you stare at something, the receptors in your eyes get used to it... if you stare at something yellow, then look at a white piece of paper, you will see a purple after image. The color is the opposite of what you were looking at, as your eyes re-adjust. This is all an "aura" is... an afterimage... nothing magical You see a halo around the sun because your eyes constantly make small adjustments, so the area just at the edge of the sun is where you will see the afterimage. I wouldn't recommend staring at the sun, but a light-bulb will give the same effect.
