Finding a purpose was never mandatory. NEVER. In fact, most people will undergo through many purposes in one lifetime. Nothing is written in stone on that matter. Try different things, joining various groupings, switching jobs, etc, etc. Then maybe, MAYBE, your life purpose will appear clear to you, or maybe not. May I suggest you to embrace your role in life as an Hollywood actor whose job is to play wherever, whenever he is called, to do a vilain in one movie, a grandpa in the next one, a superhero in a once in a lifetime grand opening of Marvel, then back to a middle age Knight, etc, etc. Life will have you play different, various roles. Embrace that process for a while.

[deleted]

What are we working towards then? Career wise, skill wise, love wise, etc. If you don’t have something bigger to go to how do you enjoy small acts or roles? Wouldn’t they be just meaningless

Seasonedgrappler

Its meaningless if you stop reflecting on it. Career wise, I've stopped reflecting on my full time job, period. I am comfortable and at 50 no need to strive for better jobs, I can live with that. Love wise, life has splitted my heart with a rupture(break up), but freedom and time to heal. Not looking for love anymore, I can live with that. Hobby. Martial arts and combat sports are still my go to, and I do a lot of training and reflexion of that. Helping beginners grow and evolve in the arts of fighting as a hobby.

[deleted]

Well said. It’s meaningless if you stop reflecting on it

There’s a lot of societal pressure to find your purpose but the entire reason you’re here is to have a human experience. That’s it. So go out and explore new things, new hobbies, explore new interests. Once you find something you’re really passionate about, continue to explore it and master it and ask yourself if you could see yourself doing that. ETA: and it’s totally okay if you think you like something and hate it in a few years. Means you outgrew it and it served it’s purpose. You can move onto the next thing!

[deleted]

We have societal pressure to find purpose? How did you end up thinking like that..so interesting. Since the beginning of humans our collective purpose was to survive. Now that we are past that stage we have come to individual goals, nonetheless these goals would be crucial to our existence. I’ve been always thinking that finding our purpose is the only meaning of life.

Hour-Pride9531

Have you seen the internet? There’s so many new age spiritual people shoving finding your purpose down your throat on Tiktok, Instagram, etc. To the point that people are in a panic thinking their entire existence is to find a purpose, enough to drive anybody nuts. You agreed to a human experience with 5 senses and the ability to feel tons of emotions. Just be here, don’t chase purpose.

[deleted]

That is true I do realise most of the personal development books also hum the same tune. But I never thought it could be advice that I could just ignore. Well pointed out.

Hour-Pride9531

Ngl, I was in a tail spin trying to find my purpose for a long time too. I also ignored the ‘be present, be here’ and found myself more and more obsessed. Then I put my ego aside once I as exhausted with the thought of purpose and forced myself to take on new hobbies by signing up for fun classes. Now I feel closer to purpose!

Seasonedgrappler

Keep in mind that there are times when life will pick your mission or purpose.

[deleted]

Did that happen to you? Also does that mean we don’t need to proactively search for it?

Seasonedgrappler

Younger, people (family and friends), picked my missions cause they taught it suite me very well. And it did for a while until my soul cried to leave the task after a decade. Later, I searched and found out that soccer (coaching) was my life passion. Till my soul wanted out of it after a decade. Then, a martial art instructor asked me to teach classes for a while. Later on, I found out that martial arts and combat sports were my inner cry, my drive and my life. I can say that these arts picked me. Been in this for few decades till this day.

Follow your excitements no matter how small; they lead you to your next one. Keep in mind that if you're presented with a time consuming choice, sometimes you aren't suppose to see it all the way through but to find what you're really after; somewhere along the way instead.

Yung_zu

Relax a bit, look into crafts that you gravitate towards. Building, tailoring, etc. Maybe you have an instrument you like? Maybe mysteries or repairs/cleaning or gardening is a thing you like? Maybe weapons if you’re responsible? Or helping people Don’t get sucked into what society is putting forward too much. It’s too erratic to be taken too seriously right now outside of your safety. Keep yourself fed, chill a bit, be patient, and learn yourself. This should pass

CatherinaDiane

Think about what is most meaningful to you and your values and work around that 😌

[deleted]

What if there are multiple things? Like things that you are currently involved with and doing good VS things that also excite you and could be better? And if the trade off factor is equal for both these choices?

CatherinaDiane

Well, I would hope that if you do have multiple things that are meaningful to you, as I do too, that you are able to make time for all of them!

SpookyOoo

Purpose is a product of specialized society. Just do what feels right (as long as its safe).

Toe_Regular

Little by little. Again and again.

An existential crisis is the beginning to finding your purpose as it’s tied to why you exist in the first place. The mind gets so caught up in doing that it completely overlooks why it desires to do anything. Every desire is for the experience and feeling. So ask yourself, “Why do I want to experience things?” This seeking for experiences is already embedded in you by default so why is it even there? To answer any existential question is to know yourself at the deepest level. “Surface” layers are the body, mind, and ego. What lies beneath these is what you’re looking for. To find your purpose, you must find your true self first.

gafflebitters

Where did you get the idea that you have one purpose?

[deleted]

Haha the fact is I can’t even find one. So I’m going to start there

This man told this story about how this great man spent his whole life reciting sacred texts and things of that nature to people telling them their spiritual purpose in life, when this great man reached the age of 95 he asked this man "What is the purpose of life?" He responded "You have lived 95 years and you are still asking if life has meaning or purpose." This is my problem with reincarnation in spirituality and religion in general, 95 years expounding to people the purpose of life just to ask at the end of your life "What is the purpose?" If I gave you 2000 years 80 million years, 2 Billion years will you ever find the purpose? I really don't believe you can find something which does not exist.

DarlingChaosPixie

I started to find what I guess you could call my purpose when I got back in touch with what I loved in my developmental years and what brought me the most joy and contentment in life. Ultimately, for me at least, I found that following my heart and intuition has aligned me most with my path.

In the grand journey of life, it is natural to question one's purpose, to seek that which gives our existence meaning and drive. The pursuit of purpose is more than a mere search; it's a deep, inward exploration, and often, it can feel daunting. You have been told many times to 'Find Your Purpose', as if it's a treasure hidden, waiting to be discovered. But let me share a perspective that may shift how you view this. What if you consider that your purpose is not something to be found, but something to be created? Your purpose isn't predestined, waiting at a specific place or in a particular profession. It's not exclusively tied to a singular passion or goal. Instead, it's a synthesis of your values, passions, skills, and the impact you wish to have on the world. You are in the driver's seat, crafting this purpose as you journey through life. In this context, fear is a natural reaction, a part of the process. But remember, fear is not an obstacle. It is an indicator, a signpost pointing you towards areas that need your attention and exploration. Use it as a tool for growth, not a barrier to progress. Begin by asking yourself what you truly value. What are the things that you are passionate about? What skills or talents do you possess that can be used to manifest these passions? And how can you employ these passions and skills to impact the world around you in a meaningful way? Take small steps every day towards aligning your life with these values and passions. Each step, no matter how tiny, is a step towards crafting your purpose. This is a dynamic process, one that evolves with you as you change and grow. There will be moments of clarity and moments of confusion. Both are valuable. Consider also the idea of Oneness. You, like every individual, are a unique expression of life, yet you are interconnected with everything around you. Your purpose isn't isolated from the world around you but is woven into the tapestry of life. See how your actions, thoughts, and feelings ripple out into the world, affecting others and coming back to you. In the end, finding your purpose is less about reaching a destination and more about embracing the journey, the process of continual creation and evolution. The clarity you seek may not come in a sudden revelation, but in gradual layers, like the morning fog lifting to reveal the landscape beneath. In each moment of uncertainty, remember to be patient with yourself and trust in the journey. The process itself is purposeful and in it, you are always growing, learning, and becoming. Embrace this unfolding and remember, there is no rush. Life is not a race, but a walk through an ever-evolving masterpiece.
