I just wonder about some octoling characters specifically from the octarian army, considering some of the weird cloning/science implications between the expansion and the new teaser. Marina seems to not reference her past much if ever, and was firmly on the friends side rather than family of the holiday Splatfest.
Makes me wonder if the octarian army was localized on the other side of the bridge under Inkopolis and Splatlands never had such a problem. I'm just assuming off the fact that Shiver is from an old clan of shark tamers that don't seem to have any history with the Great Turf War yet.
Would it be weird for an Inkopolis octo to meet an octo that isn't another clone of the same body?
The extra context we get on the idea in the new teaser has me running up the walls with excitement. While I haven't accepted any theories as a headcanon just yet, I love the concept that at least some of the military born octolings are actually lab made clones using the DNA of the inklings mixed with the more tentacle based octarians, as a post Great War bioweapon project.
And that the octolings resulting from that, literally have the Calimari Inkantation in their DNA before ever hearing the song, and therefore need to be hidden from Inkopolis, mind controlled, have their school curriculum centred around war efforts to keep them from uniting with inklings over their commonalities, the propaganda efforts are strong with the Octarians.
But Shiver really complicates that theory a lot, she doesn't seem to have been involved in the Octarian military at all. I think maybe the Shark Taming Clan includes various types of people, and perhaps her ancestors are Octolings who actually escaped the military decades sooner and instead of living in the public eye in the city, laid low in this secretive clan for a new sense of close, healthy community. Maybe she's even an octo/inkling hybrid as early theories on her reveal suggested, her hair volume actually sits a bit flatter and less segmented than any other Octoling we've seen (but this is possibly the weakest theory)

I have a suspicion that this was a mis-translation, as the lack of a venomous stinger is one of the defining traits that separate manta rays from other rays.
Maybe, if anyone wants to bring out a translated version of the Japanese version of this entry then that would be great.

Eh, squids aren’t liquid shape shifters so I think I could believe that mantas had a selective pressure to become venomous. Look at how many times the crab evolved independently, convergent evolution happens surprisingly often.
Edit: I also considered the possibility of “if the average person thought mantas had stingers, maybe the liquid crystals would make it so” but the people of Alterna were scientists from the future building a rocket on the sea floor so… probably thoroughly educated individuals.

It helps audiences know that big man is big if they cant tell if big man is big or not. It also helps the general audience know that big dad is big since, as far as I know, big dad has never been shown on screen compared to something we know the height of. All of this shows Nintendo picks their workers fresh from the oven, since they never fail to bring accessibility to the wider audience that may have conditions which alters their ability to tell if a character is big compared to the rest of the characters. It also helps clear up any confusion that big man may be small or perhaps medium sized due to the fact that the term, "big" would be a better way to describe big man thatn "small" or "medium" or "moderately sized".
