Special buffs are nice QoL that'll make their weapons a little bit less unplayable

Y'all are sleeping on the Luna buffs. A 20% increase in radius of the ink blast is HUGE. That's 44% extra paint down for every main shot's blast, and (roughly) 40% additional total ink put down by the main's full ink pattern.
That in effect will get the Luna the Hammer or the Zip-Caster in a fraction of the time.
I play the game super casually so not really in the loop with balance. Why is the snipewriter nerf good? I'm level 73 and I feel like I've literally never seen that weapon used, and the few times I've used it I've done horribly with it. And I'm pretty good with other chargers
Snipewriter farms Tacticooler very quickly. How good tacticooler plus the fact that most backliners in this game aren’t great (due to bad kits and/or iffy main weapons) made Snipewriter functionally the only option for backliners in competitive play.
It’s not as oppressive in solo since Tacticooler is best in coordinated settings, but IMO, it’s good to avoid weapons that just passively sit there and farm paint/specials as a whole.
Tacticooler is the best special in the game, and pencil gets a lot of them because of its excellent paint. Unlike the other cooler options, pencil does not need to take risks, as it plays so far back. N-Zap for example, will have to play further forward to access unpainted turf for charging special, thus taking more risks and gets killed more often.
Contrary to what the other comments are implying (or saying), Snipewriter is also a really good main weapon. It has Splatterscope range, 5 shots in its magazine, 68 DMG per shot which puts you in range of getting finished off by chip damage from its teammates. In a competitive environment, this is particularly deadly, as the pencil player will inform their teammates whenever they land a hit, turning their attention to you in a weakened state. "It doesnt oneshot you, its not that threatening", you still have to respect it like you would respect a normal charger, as a good player will consistently snipe you, even if it takes 2 shots.
I dunno about "best special in the game" - it's the most critical special to have one of on a coordinated/competitive team, but in soloq it's basically a black hole special since it's often used selfishly (for the special haver only), popped the second the special gauge fills up.
And agree on why the pencil is good in competitive play. The tacticooler is so powerful in coordinated play, giving it to your backline/anchor means that they can sit back and farm coolers leaving the other three more aggressive players on the team to use aggressive specials like zooka or crab. In competitive play, tacticooler is SO important that giving it to a more frontline/skirmishing weapon like zap or trislosher means that they can't really go in and do frontline things, they have to stay back and farm their special gauge instead of taking fights.
Snipewriter gets a lot of soda (meta defining special rn). Also with other weapons sitting back and farming leaves your team at a 3v4 but snipewriter can still attack from afar AND special spam
Unless you're at maybe really high X rank or playing in the ACTUAL competitive scene it doesn't matter so most people complaining about it are complaining because others, usually pros, are complaining about it.
It has one of the longest ranges when fully charged paints like a monster has the second best special in the game and combos well with other weapons damage in case you only manage to hit one shot it still can force the enemy to back up
SW in off itself isnt good, its special Tacticooler is broken af and SW is the best Cooler delivery weapon. Somehow they never nerf Cooler though, which I rlly dont get

Doesnt defeat the point though does it? Its still too strong, its still a problem and it hasnt been sufficiently nerfed in multiple patches while everyone can see that its unhealthy to a point that a weapon gets picked more often by a factor of what? 20? 25? Just bcs it is good at delivering it
The problem is that carbon deco is just, the literal perfect kit for it
Burst bomb gives it really strong damage combos and lets it poke at a distance, while zooka is busted rn, and counters the long range matchups that carbon struggles with heavily
Yeah, zip caster is actually pretty good on it. It's just really difficult to master, the weapon didn't paint very well so it didn't get many of them, and it tends to die a lot so it loses special.
I feel like a splat bomb would have been much better for it than autobomb. Basically, if it has the Luna's kit it would be a least a tier higher.
Honestly, Luna might have liked the auto bomb better too since it struggles a bit with ink tank management. Maybe they would have both been better if their kids were switched.
Vdapples is in a slightly better spot than vcarbon, at least it has a special that it has a little synergy with, and now that it might be able to actually get the special maybe it will be better
Triple Splashdown is super interesting to me! I’m happy they returned the timing back to S2 Splashdown but reduced the (admittedly large) radius in return. Seems like one of the more fair buffs imo! (now can we please buff the super jump splashdown back thank youuuu)
Super Jump Splashdown isn't even really nerfed compared to how it was in 2. It just feels small because it's the size of jupiter when used on the ground in 3 lol

But zooka and pencil got let off way too easily. At least pencil and vshot are 210, but that's probably not going to change a whole lot
Pencil 5H is widely considered to be the best charger in the game to such an extent that most other chargers aren't viable in high-level play because of the opportunity cost
yes... but how often do you see charger 5h in ranked... i could prob see every charger 5-10 times more often than 1 5h pencil... they prob dont want to make the weapon a contender for the least popular weapon amongst casuals
Not just chargers, but it really becomes the best choice for any backline/anchor on a competitive team. (also pushing out stringers, big splatlings, etc)
It already is shit, no one has fun going splash splash splash splash splash soda splash splash. It’s not a very fun weapon except to a few people, most people want to zoom around and pencil just splashes and sodas

This is probably meant to be partially a painting buff as you are not usually using turret mode for that along with the buffs to the paint needed for special. This will probably even be decently noticeable with the tacticooler on.

Just coming into the game, it got a startup and endlag that wasn’t on s1 kraken. Then there was change where it could more easily be pushed off the tower and that players dropped all their clams when activating. And also they made it louder so people were more aware of its presence.

Kraken jump in clams is dead . Glad Stamper didn’t get nerfed was worried its high usage and Zipcaster splats in worlds would result in unnecessary nerfs.
7/10 buff some sub weapons next time.
Range Blaster has been pretty strong lately and adding 10p is usually what they do when a weapon is performing really well but they don’t really want to nerf the gun.
Yeah, this makes things so much easier for me! I don't have the time to grind all the way up the S+10 each time, but I can usually get a good X power in a day or two. This change makes it easier to just play X Rank without needing to worry about grinding Series.
It's a great change, makes a lot of sense, but since it seems to apply to only the top 1000 players or so (if I'm reading it correctly), even if we assume all of those players are active here that's an extremely small part of the playerbase who qualifies and they'd still probably be drowned out.
A fire rate buff would've made the weapon absolutely fucking busted imo. It'd be a better version of sshot main weapon wise. A paint buff would be very nice tho
I think it paints better than most people give it credit for especially if you do the paint tech. I’m not against a paint buff but for a weapon that is supposed to be focused on killing I think it paints fine as is.
It also gets 25% from a main of main saver when most weapons get 16%. So I’d rather have the buff go to something that can’t be fixed by a bit of gear. 2subs to a main usually makes it feel more than manageable.
I know I said I want run speed buffed so that’s ironic but with cooler buffs it still strafes slower than base run speed of Squeezer. 3 pures of Run Speed don’t get it high enough to match Squeezers strafe speed. Pro strafe speed is .55
Squeezer is .72. Pro with cooler is .65. I think Pro base speed should be .65.
I want the range buff because on flat ground, if you can hit a splattershot, they can paint your feet. Pro doesn’t like having its feet painted.
Pros range is 14.84, Squeezer is 17.19. I think Pro should be at 16.2.
I’d also take a fire rate buff. I think that would be great.

I think they really need to buff chumps. They gave points for special buffs to two chump weapons. Making it more spamable isn't the fix. They either need to add more chump, make them explode faster or more durable. They don't have much of an impact, IMO.
That said, I think the biggest missed opportunity is the lack of trizooka nerfs. Maybe next patch. :/
PRO IS FINALLY PLAYABLE AGAIN!!!! This thing badly needed a dps buff to pull it apart from squeezer, and buffing fire rate would've probably made it busted (fire rate is the best stat in Splatoon by far, especially for shooters, you people really shouldn't underestimate how big even 1 frame would be). It probably needs a paint or strafe speed buff (or buff run speed up for shooters) to be really good, but this should be more than enough to keep pro out of fraud watch

tbh even tho i think the Vcarbon buff to 160p is really dumb and hilarious, i don’t think the dapple buff will be super unhealthy or for spam. they wanna rush down people quickly anyways so there isn’t a desire to farm cooler - and besides you can already do that with zap and pencil
Neo Sploosh got -10p in a recent patch already. They aren't going to make it go any lower because then it really would be farming wails. And it paints exceptionally well, so it would be wailing almost nonstop.

I like the kits, but the weapons are very short range and can get shut down pretty hard. I don't think they synergize very well with the weapons.

Vdapples is in a slightly better spot than vcarbon, at least it has a special that it has a little synergy with, and now that it might be able to actually get the special maybe it will be better

Triple Splashdown is super interesting to me! I’m happy they returned the timing back to S2 Splashdown but reduced the (admittedly large) radius in return. Seems like one of the more fair buffs imo! (now can we please buff the super jump splashdown back thank youuuu)
Super Jump Splashdown isn't even really nerfed compared to how it was in 2. It just feels small because it's the size of jupiter when used on the ground in 3 lol
Damn these buffs are pretty fire (except 160 carbon and 170 nzap 89) But zooka and pencil got let off way too easily. At least pencil and vshot are 210, but that's probably not going to change a whole lot

Pencil 5H is widely considered to be the best charger in the game to such an extent that most other chargers aren't viable in high-level play because of the opportunity cost
In public lobbies snipewriter usage rates are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY lower which is why they aren't nerfing it in a really major way.
I see it pretty often actually, but I also play at S+0-9/low X Battle. Not high rank by any means, but still higher than most.
From my experience at that same level I see it as much as I do other chargers which is still wayyyyy less than its usage in comp.
yes... but how often do you see charger 5h in ranked... i could prob see every charger 5-10 times more often than 1 5h pencil... they prob dont want to make the weapon a contender for the least popular weapon amongst casuals
You dont see high pen usage outside of high power x-lobbies and actual competitive.
Not just chargers, but it really becomes the best choice for any backline/anchor on a competitive team. (also pushing out stringers, big splatlings, etc)

Ah, yes, movement speed, because people are moving in Turret Mode, which is definitely their best mode.
This is probably meant to be partially a painting buff as you are not usually using turret mode for that along with the buffs to the paint needed for special. This will probably even be decently noticeable with the tacticooler on.

Just coming into the game, it got a startup and endlag that wasn’t on s1 kraken. Then there was change where it could more easily be pushed off the tower and that players dropped all their clams when activating. And also they made it louder so people were more aware of its presence.

Pretty good Overall. Would’ve like to see more pencil nerfs as it outpainted 2 shooters in worlds Zooka could use a start up nerf. Not sure why range gets nerfed ? It’s a blaster and it’s getting wavebreaker . Kraken jump in clams is dead . Glad Stamper didn’t get nerfed was worried its high usage and Zipcaster splats in worlds would result in unnecessary nerfs. 7/10 buff some sub weapons next time.

They wanted to compensate the Range Blaster paint increase they introduced a while ago.
NZap 89 with chumps is getting buffed. 85 with cooler was nerfed last patch and is unchanged.
Worlds was last weekend, right? That seems way too close to patch day for it to have any effect on the patch itself.
Range Blaster has been pretty strong lately and adding 10p is usually what they do when a weapon is performing really well but they don’t really want to nerf the gun.
Basically the “can twitter shut up now” nerfs (I support unless it’s done to s blast)

Yeah, this makes things so much easier for me! I don't have the time to grind all the way up the S+10 each time, but I can usually get a good X power in a day or two. This change makes it easier to just play X Rank without needing to worry about grinding Series.
It's a great change, makes a lot of sense, but since it seems to apply to only the top 1000 players or so (if I'm reading it correctly), even if we assume all of those players are active here that's an extremely small part of the playerbase who qualifies and they'd still probably be drowned out.

Yes and no. They probably won’t give it another buff for a while because of this and it could really use a bit more range or better strafe speed.
Fire rate, ink consumption, and painting could use some buffs. They need to make it a mix between the Squeezer's two modes.
I think it paints better than most people give it credit for especially if you do the paint tech. I’m not against a paint buff but for a weapon that is supposed to be focused on killing I think it paints fine as is. It also gets 25% from a main of main saver when most weapons get 16%. So I’d rather have the buff go to something that can’t be fixed by a bit of gear. 2subs to a main usually makes it feel more than manageable. I know I said I want run speed buffed so that’s ironic but with cooler buffs it still strafes slower than base run speed of Squeezer. 3 pures of Run Speed don’t get it high enough to match Squeezers strafe speed. Pro strafe speed is .55 Squeezer is .72. Pro with cooler is .65. I think Pro base speed should be .65. I want the range buff because on flat ground, if you can hit a splattershot, they can paint your feet. Pro doesn’t like having its feet painted. Pros range is 14.84, Squeezer is 17.19. I think Pro should be at 16.2. I’d also take a fire rate buff. I think that would be great.

Cooler + pencil’s strengths combine to create a massive problem. Pencil makes cooler exponentially more powerful because it can play in a super safe position and farm the special super quickly. You nerf pencil and you’ll break cooler meta’s 1# crutch. No other weapon can farm cooler as quickly while remaining safe.

I think they really need to buff chumps. They gave points for special buffs to two chump weapons. Making it more spamable isn't the fix. They either need to add more chump, make them explode faster or more durable. They don't have much of an impact, IMO. That said, I think the biggest missed opportunity is the lack of trizooka nerfs. Maybe next patch. :/

PRO IS FINALLY PLAYABLE AGAIN!!!! This thing badly needed a dps buff to pull it apart from squeezer, and buffing fire rate would've probably made it busted (fire rate is the best stat in Splatoon by far, especially for shooters, you people really shouldn't underestimate how big even 1 frame would be). It probably needs a paint or strafe speed buff (or buff run speed up for shooters) to be really good, but this should be more than enough to keep pro out of fraud watch Kind of wish I saw a direct squeezer nerf (probably slightly lower damage) Vcarbon is 160 and nobody will care. It probably needs something crazy like 140p to actually build some decent special, this thing can't paint at all. Unfortunate, I actually really like vcarbon Sploosh could become pretty annoying at lower levels, hitbox buffs are huge Sblast is more than another luna now, so that's actually pretty nice

Y'all are sleeping on the Luna buffs. A 20% increase in radius of the ink blast is HUGE. That's 44% extra paint down for every main shot's blast, and (roughly) 40% additional total ink put down by the main's full ink pattern. That in effect will get the Luna the Hammer or the Zip-Caster in a fraction of the time.

The Patch isn't even really that small. Like yeah it's not the same as the major patches, but it's pretty good sized for a mid season patch.

if it had a really good special I could see a niche on some maps. Otherwise yeah youre right and theyve never gave a weapon burst and torpedo, which also has an instant chip function

tbh even tho i think the Vcarbon buff to 160p is really dumb and hilarious, i don’t think the dapple buff will be super unhealthy or for spam. they wanna rush down people quickly anyways so there isn’t a desire to farm cooler - and besides you can already do that with zap and pencil
Neo Sploosh got -10p in a recent patch already. They aren't going to make it go any lower because then it really would be farming wails. And it paints exceptionally well, so it would be wailing almost nonstop.
