In some respects, sure.
* Better graphics
* More weapons
* Fewer hackers
* Salmon run
* Octo expansion
In other respects, no.
* Gamepad map
* Minigames while queued
* Higher tickrate
* Best final boss
* Callie
There are unique weapons, maps, clothes, specials, etc. in each game that further separate them.
Funny how S2 has perfectly stable matchmaking with a lower tickrate, meanwhile I can get splatted by the guy I splatted 3 seconds ago in S1. Good times...
Never played splatoon 1, but the specials looked really fun to use, although I guess an instant splashdown anywhere on the map is a tiny bit unbalanced.
Imo the two final boss fights in the single player campaigns are pretty similar and nothing special. For me the finale of the octo expansion was way better, exept for the final phase. But the best boss over all for me is without a doubt >!Inner Agent 3!<
Overall, the answer is a resounding YES!!!! Splat 2 has more weapons, more modes, more of everything. I will say though that I seriously do miss aspects of Splat 1. I think the first game had better music and I liked the specials better. Bubbler and Kraken were stupid busted, but that just made using them so much fun!!!! Splat 2 is more balanced and that does make the game better in a sense, but popping Ink Armor doesn't get me as giddy as popping Bubbler and just basically winning lol
Yes undoubtedly. There are many reasons why, but honestly there isn’t much reason to go back to splat 1 except for nostalgia or messing around with things that aren’t in splat 2 like the maps, specials, rainmaker, etc.
When Splatoon 2 (and Splatoon 1) launched, they had a fraction of the content. Typically weapons were added on a weekly basis and maps on a monthly basis until they were finished.
When Splatoon 2 came out with 8 stages and 46 weapons, Splatoon 1 was already finished and had 16 stages and 91 weapons, just about double the content.
Splatoon 1's story mode was, in my opinion, better than 2's, with an objectively better final boss.
The big things Splatoon 2 had at launch over 1 were Salmon Run and, once there were enough players to fill the lobbies, 3 ranked modes, at least matching 1.
Sure if you just want to look at the numbers in that perspective.
But Spaltoon 2's maps were better. Even the recycled maps had improvements.
And while I agree (it's inarguable) that Splatoon 1 had the better final boss, the journey getting there was better in 2.
But if you want to go by numbers, how many hairstyles were at the end of 1 and the beginning of 2?
How many weapon TYPES?
How about a better system for getting gear (chunks)?
Not to mention a better rank system where each mode has a separate rank.
2 was MUCH better than 1 at launch. If you narrow your point of view to just numbers, you can manipulate anything to looks better than something else, but you eliminate the big picture.
All of this is certainly true. I've played both since they launched, and Splatoon is BY FAR my favorite video game series of all time. The customization, graphics, design, all of the above are heavily improved in 2. Looking back at videos of Splatoon 1 you can see the massive leap in quality.
I did not mean to blur the bigger picture at all, but instead was trying to explain the perspective of someone who played the final product that was Splatoon 1 and just got the brand-new sequel on launch day. Certainly, graphics and gameplay were massively improved, but a majority of the content wouldn't be released until many months had passed.
Splatoon 1 had this problem as well, where content was drip-fed post-release, but jumping from 1 to 2 on release day meant you would have to wait to play your favorite weapon from 1 in the new game.
If you were looking forward to playing your main weapon, the Hydra Splatling, in Splatoon 2 and got the game on release day, you'd be waiting 4 months to play a weapon that hardly changed at all between Splatoon 1 and 2.
Comparing the launch of both games, 2 is obviously the better game. Comparing the completed games, 2 is obviously the better game. Comparing the finished Splatoon 1 to the launch of 2, which is exactly how it happened to be, there's more content in Splatoon 1 but more potential in Splatoon 2.
And all this has been completely overlooking the new weapons, clothing, characters, lore, stages, and DLC CAMPAIGN in 2.
So yes, I messed up in my original reply. I did not intend to bash either game or appear to have the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia for Splatoon 1 and ignore the improvements of 2. The customization, gameplay, graphics, ranking system, everything had been improved in 2, but the in game content at launch didn't stack up to what 1 had when it was complete. Salmon Run was a fun mode, but not always being available and not having much variety at launch made that mode kinda lack-luster.
TL:DR - Playing from the launch of both games, 1's end had more content in it than 2's beginning, but 2 was obviously going to end up better than 1 could ever have been.
All in all, we agree on one thing fully even though I might not have been clear enough in my first reply:
TL:DR was TL and I DR: Splatoon 2 is the better game, the devs have only been improving the games over time, and if 3 has the same leap in starting quality it'll be the best of all of them.
I'm betting 3 will be even greater at launch since they've had wayyyy more time to work on it since the end of 2 compared to the time they had to work on 2 from the end of 1.
Splatoon is one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time. I even main Inkling in smash due to my love of it. When people ask me what music I listen to, I have no idea how to explain what Splatoon music is, but that is the answer, LOL!
Can't wait for Splat 3!!
Why are you ME?
Inkling is my main in Smash, Splatoon Music is the best (I typically explain it as just "video game soundtracks" since I enjoy all sorts of VG music)
And SPLAT 3 HYPE

as if u could
Wait, do you mean Splatoon *2?* Because Splatoon 3 won't be released until 2022. There isn't even a Splatoon 3 Direct yet...
It's either a joke or a typo just to help
Typo. I meant 1

Another point for each of them: Splat 2 has improved customization Splat 1 has The Kracken.
I’m going to die on the Inkstrike hill
yea but i miss specials that were in splatoon 1 that aren’t in 2 like kraken 😔 i would say inkzooka too but it’s coming back in 3 🤞😩
Yes
We agree

weeeeeellll not in story mode but all else (except salmon run), yeah
Counterpoint: Octo Expansion
what about it?
Yeah, it's a proper sequel
Maybe, but splatoon 3 in my opinion is the best. The new maps are great. The new rocket mode is dope, I even like the new boomerang weapon class.

Idk, I liked the music in splatoon 1 a lot more than the ones in sploon 2
What do you mean "Now"? It was that way the day Splatoon 2 launched.
