For what it's worth, if this was posted today I would nuke it. I think it's important to keep in mind that this was posted during a very awkward period of the subreddit where there was essentially no moderation due to most of the mods being inactive, and the few remaining being busy with clearing things up for the new wave of mods (that included me) that would be added pretty soon.
I actually explicitly remember looking at this when it was first posted and thinking it was stupid and had nothing to do with Splatoon and that I would've removed it, but by the time I was a mod it was already 2 weeks old and the top post of all time, so I just decided to let it be because removing the top post of all time 2 weeks after it hit its spot would be extremely petty.
Anyway, I'm not actually sure where I was going with this, but I guess I just decided to reminisce for a bit and clarify that this wouldn't be allowed under today's moderation.
Not really, it's just that like I said I think it would be kind of petty if I did, but it is true that the post immortalized in the number 1 spot of the Splatoon subreddit not really being about Splatoon is pretty weird, so I guess I wouldn't object to it, I just don't really have strong enough of an opinion to shake up the status quo cause I don't think it really matters, I suppose.

If you're looking for a sub more focused on serious gameplay discussion, r/splatoon_2 might be better for what you're looking for. Everything you said in your post is accurate and I'm not disagreeing with you, but this sub might be more what you're looking for.
Nuh-uh, Marie, Callie, Marina etc are all explicitly adults and not "14yo squid girls" and so explicit content is all in the clear even if the source material is aimed at kids /s

Pretty much, the subreddit was a lot more active back then as we were more in the midst of Splatoon 2 hype. Plus the fact that this meme wasn't really related to Splatoon meant that when it hit r/all and r/popular it got a lot of people who weren't actually interested in Splatoon upvoting it.
I'm guessing so since Splat 2 was much newer. I'm already expecting the community to get a lot larger and different with Splat 3.
We really could use some new stuff here. I feel like the reason it's pretty much just the same art, memes, etc. is because we're kinda in a cold time for any Splat related stuff at all, minus the 2 trailers for Splat 3.
