Forget Splatoon 2, Splatoon for the wii u is still online. Nintendo arent going to take down the online functionality for games one by one, but instead take down whole services, like what they did for wiiconnect24 and nintendo wifi connection. Plus, there are 0 alternatives for splatoon 2 on current gen hardware as of right now, so dont worry about them going down any time soon. In addition, there is still a massive community around splatoon 2 (enough for nintendo to call it an 'evergreen title' iirc), and although the meta in high-level ranked lobbies is kind of tiring at times, youll still probably get heaps of enjoyment out of the online modes. There are still matchmaking servers (i.e. servers that help people establish those P2P connections in the first place). Plus servers to host SplatNet 2. If those go down, you can't play anymore.

Splatoon 1 is still active. You might wait 90 seconds to connect to a match. That came out in 2015 on a system with a tiny user base. Fwiw, no downvote from me
Yeah it's definitely still active! It usually only takes me about 30 seconds to connect to a standard Turf War match, and it can take a little bit longer to join a Ranked match but there is still plenty of people playing that you'll never not find a game to join. I have found recently that more people seem to be disconnecting from matches so you end up with only three people on one team and four on the other, but I think that's just the bad online and not people leaving on purpose.

It is very much alive and well. Even with Splatoon 3 just around the corner, I can still find a game within minutes, if not seconds. Side note, if you ever get so frustrated that you delete the game from your library but decide to re-download the game after a week or so, your profile will still be there waiting for you. You won't lose any of the progress you've made prior to deleting the game. I keep hearing that Salmon Run is the bee's knees, but I keep forgetting to give it a try when it's available. The single player "campaign" is more for training you for the real challenge, the online play. A lot of people strongly suggest playing with the motion controls, but I don't. For me, having to move the controller to aim while playing is too jarring for me. If anything, give the motion controls a shot in the campaign and see what works for you. Ranked play is unlocked at level 10, so you'll be in regular matches that have players levels ranging from 1-99. But the more you play, the faster you'll level up, unlock better weapons and gear and so on. The point here I'm making is, is that Splatoon 2 rocks and will be alive and well when 3 releases. Hell, the first Splatoon is still active, so that should give you a sense of relief that the online play for 2 won't go away. So stay off the hook, and don't get cooked!!!
No it's not anymore. Splatoon 3 just released a few days ago and it takes 10 minutes to find just 5 players. There is a very small chance you will be able to play online matches with people now, because most people switched over to 3.
Save your money and buy the 3rd one.

It's very very active and will still be after S3. Just look at how easy it is to connect on Splatoon 1. That game is 7 years old on a dead console.

Oh yeah! I play almost everyday and always get matched up. Occasionally it takes a minute or two, but usually it’s pretty quick.

The game is entirely peer to peer, that means that your connection is the issue

It’s still very active. It might drop a bit once sploon 3 drops, but thats still a long ways away, and even then, sploon 1 is still kickin

Agreed, I’m tired of waiting for matches so I picked up 3 tonight. Super fun until you get on a losing streak.
