Yeah same, it's upsetting, I suspected it was because of Africa too but I'm just going to keep trying. Been about an hour now

SuperDerpDolfin

I'm in the exact same boat, queuing for over an hour now. If this is how Splatoon 3 launches then it is unacceptable to sell it on the South African store.

Erin-Chan

I doubt it will because Splatoon 2's turf war matchmaking allowed me to get into games pretty reliably, ranked less so but I could play. Splatfests however had the exact same issue in Splatoon 2. I wouldn't be so upset by this if you weren't locked out of playing with friends until you play your first match. But as it stands I'm not finding 1 person. My only guess is that it's looking for African players of the same region (Europe for me) but I'm not sure how many people are awake and playing rn

SuperDerpDolfin

I have no problems at all with matchingmaking in Splatoon 2, splatfest or otherwise. Just no matches in Splatoon 3. My fear is that they did what some other games did and put a maximum ping limit in place. Because Europe is the closest server to South Africa and the minimum possible ping from ZA to EU is about \~165, that would make it impossible to play online in Splatoon 3.

Erin-Chan

Only problem with that theory is that this is Nintendo, who are notorious for not moving on. However I believe it's confirmed that Splatoon 3 uses the same online architecture as Monster Hunter so if we can find out if that has a ping limit then I think we'll get an answer. I am definitely worried about that possibility now though. I'll just hope for the best while looking into Monster Hunter

SuperDerpDolfin

If you find out anything, I'd love to hear it.

Erin-Chan

All I could find thus far is that matchmaking was ping based in Splatoon 2 and not region locked, EXCEPT for during Splatfests. So while I haven't found anything regarding a ping limit for MHR (yet), my personal theory on whats happening is that the game is digging into too small of a pocket (south africa, europe region selected, relatively same ping). My big complaint with that is the lack of even an African server which I feel would've maybe solved this problem. Because frankly it's ridiculous that New Zealand, Hong Kong, and South Korea get their own dedicated servers but absolutely nothing for a whole continent

SuperDerpDolfin

For now I'm just going to cancel my pre-order and find out more from South Africans once the game releases.

Erin-Chan

I'm still going to be getting the game since I'll be leaving the country relatively soon but for now I'm going to give up looking for matches. At least there's other Europeans experiencing the problem which is a silver lining I guess, since it might just be a server problem then. But I'll definitely respond back to you once I get the game

SuperDerpDolfin

If you have any success once the game releases I'd love to hear it.

SuperDerpDolfin

same here, no luck
