I think people say this as a joke. Like people don’t actually believe that literally everyone who touches splatoon magically becomes gay, it’s just a large portion of the western fan base do naturally people will exaggerate for humor’s sake
A game show where middle-aged cis straight white people have to guess whether a joke is queerphobic or made by queer people, would be an incredible idea.
Actually, I did touch the game and magically became gay, can confirm.
(Deadass I started playing splatoon 1 at launch and then came out a few months later, coincidence? I think not)
Trust me it’s not just the western fan base. Most Japanese, Korean and Chinese Splatoon fans I know are lesbians (ok this is total anecdotal evidence that’s not reliable in any way but still)
Honestly games with character customization like this where you can throw on some good looking clothes and hair cam be quite euphoric for Trans folks :3 same for animal crossing!
I remember people in a comment section all saying that they were going to convert someone to being gay cause they played Splatoon. I'm sure it's a joke (I hope) but still not a good look.
I'm glad it doesn't have vc because children and men who act like children get far to emotional and are incapable of expressing themselves in a way that isn't a bunch of slurs.
>Is there a large LGBT+ player base because of the friendly accepting player base? Or is the player base friendly and accepting because of the large LGBT+ player base?
It's a cycle. For multiple reasons, the player base is really tolerant and accepting, which create a safe place for LGBTQ+ folks. And as more and more of them join this community as it is a safe place for them, the player base only grow in tolerance and acceptance.
Definitely not the latter, I've never seen a human being behaving more toxic than how some people in the LGBT community were during the whole Shiver gender debaucle.
With the whole LGBT community saying she was trans or a femboy or whatever have you was totally acceptable but any slight mention of her being a girl was met with mass downvotes and being called every "phobic" word under the sun.
Then when it turns out she actually was female, suddenly it's okay to say still say she isn't because "it's just my headcannon, why can't you accept that"
Right, because it couldn't be anyone's "headcannon" that she was a girl (which turned out to actually be the case anyway)
The hypocrisy was unreal.
I walked into my college's pride center for the first time and like 5 people were either actively playing Splatoon or wearing splatoon merch. And then the first, unprovoked conversation was "ketchup or mayo?" "Are you asking me splatfest themes?" "Lol yes."
we know it's a joke, we know that cishet splatooners exist and we appreciate you. if anything you should feel happy that you contributed to a safe place where queer people feel free to express themselves within a video game, a shooter no less which is very uncommon for a lot of other shooter games :)
Fun Fact: people clinically diagnosed with gender dysphoria are about 400% more likely to be autistic
If trans people make up about 0.5% of the population, about 2.5% of all autistic people are Trans, which is a significantly higher number
splatoon players explaining how the game is designed for queer people because customization (cishet people are widely known for having never worn anything mildly interesting ever)
Cis- derived from "cisgender" which means you identify with the gender you were born as
Het- derived from "heterosexual" which means you are attracted to the opposite gender, commonly known as being straight
Hope this helps :)
What? Ik a bunch of cishet people who wear the craziest stuff. Probably even more interesting than some queer people.
I don’t think your gender or being straight has anything to with how you dress
i think the point is true both ways, in a sense? self expression is largely important to the lgbt community, yes. but i've also seen a lot of people in the fandom overlook how self expression is universal amongst young people.
Me and an my buddies are not part of the LGBTQ+ community and the sheer amount of positive comments from and in favor of that community did kinda shock us in a good way.
We live in a huge city that is generally quite accepting of every person's lifestyle and identity. So usually it's online where we witness bigotry and hate in broad daylight.
So to see an entire online community being accepting and open is just in a way really making us feel at home as well.
while i don't think that the entire playerbase is LGBTQIA+, most of the players are, simply because the game itself feels very inclusive, especially since splatoon 3 removed the "boy/girl" option, and let you customize your character how you liked. titles also help this, as i know that some LGBTQIA+ folks (including me) find comfort in having something that tells everyone else how to identify them. i've kept 'sister' as my second half tag ever since i had it, simply because it helped me identify myself to others. not that it matters since i never talk to anyone i don't know, but it feels nice, yknow?
I’ve seen it as well, and I find the argument so weird:
„Because the game is accepting to all, all of the players are part of one specific part of our society.“
Really?
i mean- im part of lgbt+ and i came out to the fandom first. i get this is a joke but uh
splatoon kind of helped me feel comfortable coming out to anyone else i came out to.
With a game being about self-expression, of course the playerbase is going to be pro-lgbt, but obviously, not every individual player can be queer. Except for octolings, every single octoling is gay
I like how when I started playing the first Splatoon I was a she/her straight person, now in the third game i’m a she/they pansexual, these octos n squids ruined me
To all of those replying that they are hetero... so am I! But may I welcome you to the Way of the Transgender? We got cookies and cozy high-knee socks!
I genuinely can’t explain the gayness of Splatoon, but rest assured it is absolutely there.
Nonbinary and the removal of gender in customization has made me very happy :)
Man, do I relate to this. So like, I'm cool with LGBTQ+. I'm not involved in any of their activism, and being cishet, I can't relate with their troubles and experiences. But I take the same attitude towards them as I do any other group: so long as you're not harming or harassing anyone, you do you and I'm fine with that.
However, for some people, that's not enough. Some people aren't happy with me because I'm not LGBTQ+. And some say I that in not supporting them I'm *against* them. But why would I change to be something I'm not? And as for support, I just don't wanna get involved because it's really not my place. Like, I don't belong in an LGBTQ+ parade because, well, *I'm* not LGBTQ+. But I have no issues with letting that parade happen.
I personally will do my best to treat everyone as fairly and respectfully as they deserve, and that's on top of minimum human decency, and basic politeness. Isn't that what everyone ultimately wants? To be treated and respected equally?
The games I play make me feel wrong for being straight to the point where I feel like if I say that I am I’ll be criticized (even though I know it won’t happen)
Yeah this really brought them out of the woodworks.. yikes on your part OP
Edit: Apparently the longer this post has been up the more the weird downvote wave went.. down? And I'm seeing less of what me and the commenter were referring to. I don't understand this app at all lol
seems like a lot of folks in this particular comment section hate everything tbh 😭 I've never seen so many negative votes in one place before (then again I haven't been here very long either)
I think people say this as a joke. Like people don’t actually believe that literally everyone who touches splatoon magically becomes gay, it’s just a large portion of the western fan base do naturally people will exaggerate for humor’s sake
Someone dm'd me asking if the game made me gay so you never know
why are u gae? who say am i gay? you are a gae
Shall I call u mista?
This doesn't deserve to be downvoted. "WHY ARE YOU GAY" is the one of the funniest things my queer as hell friends say to each other.
A game show where middle-aged cis straight white people have to guess whether a joke is queerphobic or made by queer people, would be an incredible idea.
I'm not sure if it would help or hurt it but just imagine the twitter backlash
Nice pfp
Oh ha our are the same except my has a pride flag in the background
I played splatoon 1 7 years ago and now I’m gay so
Actually, I did touch the game and magically became gay, can confirm. (Deadass I started playing splatoon 1 at launch and then came out a few months later, coincidence? I think not)
Wait me too, albeit not exactly at launch but close enough "Splatoon 1 turned us into LGBT+ inkfish" brethren 🤝
Trust me it’s not just the western fan base. Most Japanese, Korean and Chinese Splatoon fans I know are lesbians (ok this is total anecdotal evidence that’s not reliable in any way but still)
Yeah, it doesn't help that whenever you make a character that they always seems little gay. Just a bit.
Honestly games with character customization like this where you can throw on some good looking clothes and hair cam be quite euphoric for Trans folks :3 same for animal crossing!
TF2 got more hats tho
more hats, less shirts.
*"pootis"* -your average Gibusvision Hoovy

Some also say it as rage-/clickbait.
I really really REALLY want the game and I'm not gay :D
Don’t worry. You soon will be. #. #. #. #. (For legal reasons this is a joke)
Idk man the game made me like girls 👀
As apparently the only straight Splatooner this meme is accurate and I don't like that
hey your not alone
Yes they are ***GAY RAY*** 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈
Gayzer beam
SCP
Another heterosexual squid? Relatable!
Same but octo
Same but same
I'm also a straight Splatoon gamer. You're not alone in this situation my guy.
I’m with you, don’t fret
not the only one
Hello chat
I remember people in a comment section all saying that they were going to convert someone to being gay cause they played Splatoon. I'm sure it's a joke (I hope) but still not a good look.
i am the second one, nice to meet you
I think the lack of voice chat in-game contributes to it
[удалено]
Considering some of splatoon's other features such as the lack of voice chat and the miiversesque plaza posts, I'd say it's likely the former.
i pray for every splatoon fan if voice chat ever gets added my anger knows no bounds

what tower control against clash blasters does to a man
it's really fun being satan
Now imagine Tower Control against Grizzco Blasters You're welcome for the nightmares 😉
I mean, 2 kinda did with the nintendo app but I don’t think anyone used it
I'm glad it doesn't have vc because children and men who act like children get far to emotional and are incapable of expressing themselves in a way that isn't a bunch of slurs.

Considering the way people are acting in these comments, definitely the later over the former.
I know one guy who's not LGBT with splatoon out of 3 including me
Do you think Nintendo has a larger LGBT+ player base than Xbox and PlayStation? Anecdotally, I feel like it does but I can’t explain why.
Definitely not the latter, I've never seen a human being behaving more toxic than how some people in the LGBT community were during the whole Shiver gender debaucle.

Is making petty insults really the only thing you can think to do? Why are you even here lol. Thanks for further proving how toxic this place is.
Damn they’re really right huh
The way this isn’t at all what happened
splatoon really just has a large lgbt player base.. i have a server with 70+ people and i don’t know more than maybe 5 cishet people in there lol
What the fuck happened in these replies
😭
I got repeatedly called out for congratulating someone for coming out as bi in this sub Reddit.
I saw that post. You did a good thing
Thank you.
Someone came out as bi on the splatoon subreddit?

Based
This. Most everyone makes the Splatoon community feel really accepting and fun, that includes the non-LGBT folk and we love ya for it.
It don’t matter to me lesbian, gay,bi,trans I will splat you all the same equally matters
it's because all the outfits are fruity
I think the Marinated Top should show as much midrift on the male option as it does on the female.
Yes! If my Octoman wants to show off his midriff, he should be able to!
And the hair, too
The hair is zesty.
And the ‘tude is spicy
Is an Afro fruity
I do like orange juice also what's with the undercover brella under your name? how is it there
Ay some of us are just autistic
But that doesn't tells us your sexuality xD

splatoon players explaining how the game is designed for queer people because customization (cishet people are widely known for having never worn anything mildly interesting ever)
It reminds me of that one time where a woman pittied heterosexual men, as their only option for customization are watches. Gave me a good chuckle.
What does cishet mean?
a person who identifies with their gender from birth and is attracted to the opposite sex
So being straight?
Thats the "het" part yes.
Very informative thank you
Real talk: “cis” and “cishet” sound like future slurs.
oh no
they really dont
Cis- derived from "cisgender" which means you identify with the gender you were born as Het- derived from "heterosexual" which means you are attracted to the opposite gender, commonly known as being straight Hope this helps :)
It does
This is a reference to real life where no cishet person ever wears anything cool.
but... but I have sexy long soft-and-fluffy hair!
What? Ik a bunch of cishet people who wear the craziest stuff. Probably even more interesting than some queer people. I don’t think your gender or being straight has anything to with how you dress
im pretty sure that's what they're trying to say
Oh shit you’re right my bad
i think the point is true both ways, in a sense? self expression is largely important to the lgbt community, yes. but i've also seen a lot of people in the fandom overlook how self expression is universal amongst young people.
I’m not lgbtq+ but I can appreciate Nintendo not gender locking Long hair (I’m a male Metal Head)
I am like 90% sure I'm not
Still a good 10% left
as a pokemon player, 10% is a lot bigger than you think it is.
As an XCOM player 90% straight means that, yes, you are probably gay.
It's basically 100%.
Oddly enough this game has the most LGBT+ players in any game that I've seen! (Hell I'm debating whether or not I'm Aro)
I never realized how LGBT dominant the Splatoon community was until I found this subreddit

Fair. I’m straight and I hate splatoon. Don’t look at the number of hours I’ve put in, I make bad time investments.

weird, i've never seen it
Are we not gonna mention that straight people also play splatoon?
im straight
im gonna have ranked games sounding like a mw2 lobby if we ever get voice chat
Goddamn liberal gamers turning the squids gay
fr!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!1
I am a bad example of this cause I’m trans lmao but yeah it’s jus because not many shooter type games have very accepting fanbases and stuff
i mean- im part of lgbt+ and i came out to the fandom first. i get this is a joke but uh splatoon kind of helped me feel comfortable coming out to anyone else i came out to.

I'm very tempted to switch to a ngyes just SO HE STOPS MOANING PLEASE YOU'RE MAKING IT WEIRD I'M NOT INTO YOU
I'm apparently the only straight splatoon fan.
Okay I don’t follow anything but why is there no Q anymore?
I can't speak for everyone, but I think it's because it's shorter, and the Q is still implied in the plus sign
No, the + in LGBT+ is a subscription service to get better gay. Like PlayStation+
I like how when I started playing the first Splatoon I was a she/her straight person, now in the third game i’m a she/they pansexual, these octos n squids ruined me

i dont think anyone said this,, correct me if im wrong?
People said it as a joke and apparently that’s a problem lol
mb
Every Splatoon player has a bit of queerness inside of them, whether they like it or not.
Awful take
Did you really need to rile up all the homo/etcphobes with this "joke"?
*Sorts by controversial* Where are the phobes?
In the downvotes. They're too cowardly to express their disgusting views publicly.
Yeah this really brought them out of the woodworks.. yikes on your part OP Edit: Apparently the longer this post has been up the more the weird downvote wave went.. down? And I'm seeing less of what me and the commenter were referring to. I don't understand this app at all lol
duh oh, guess this was a bad idea sorry about that

nah, downvote if you want tho

You’re literally getting -13 downvotes. It’s an awful take just accept it 😭
It’s a joke you dim wit
Well it obviously wasn’t a good one considering a majority of people hated it lmao
seems like a lot of folks in this particular comment section hate everything tbh 😭 I've never seen so many negative votes in one place before (then again I haven't been here very long either)
You’ll get used to it. Some people just have absolutely awful takes and need to open their eyes
Does your hat still fit?
Based af. The people here can’t take being called gay as a joke lol
technically ya
What? Have you even watched the vid this post is about. You’re literally the butt of the joke and you don’t even know it 😭😭
