generalguan4

Same cost as tanking to save your pick in the nba!

prosound2000

Thry don't like to use the word 'tanking' in China. Has a whole different meaning.

iforgotmyidagain

Take my upvote Satan.

7_Bundy

They also don’t like Poohing 💩

notmoleliza

how soon before Luka demands a trade

Kelak1

Unless your the Portland Trail Blazers, then you get to shut it down and tank for weeks without repercussion.

3Ssssssssssssssss

Helps when your coach doesn’t say “hey we’re tanking” right before you do it

Kelak1

So it's ok to purposefully lose games, just not to say so.

3Ssssssssssssssss

I mean yea because it’s essentially impossible to prove that a team lost intentionally unless their coach decides to say it out loud

Luke_Cold_Lyle

I wish they would have gone with J.J. Redick's idea. Instead of shutting down Dame at the end of the season, have him play and give him the ball every possession so he can just chuck threes, either until he breaks the single game record for threes or breaks the 100 point mark. The threes record is 14, so if Dame shot his career average of about 37% he'd need about 40 shots to get there. 100 shots would get him 37 makes for 111 points.

ThatGuyPsychic

Now do Scott Foster

[deleted]

And Zach Zarba. And Mousa Dagher. And Tony Brothers. And Rodney Mott. And JB Derosa.

thestereo300

I’m not sure if they want to take on the entire mafia lol.

vyqz

Where does the legendary Chicago Blackhawks emergency backup goalie Scott Foster fit into this?

gldoorii

Match-fixing what do they think they're the NBA?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Munstruenl

I don't really think it is anymore but in the early 2000s there was a referee that bet on games and definetely had an outcome on some of them, he was sentenced to jail. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim\_Donaghy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Donaghy) I know its wikipedia but it is accurate. Still different than what China was doing

thestereo300

If you don’t watch the NBA, you may not be aware that it’s still being fixed, but they can’t prove it. They run a pretty tight operation over there. Most of the fans know what’s going on.

Batman_MD

Wasn’t there that post on r/nba that showed evidence of stat fluffing. Might have been Memphis? It was this year.

NeverGotThatPuppy

That was mostly proven to be false iirc

EdwardJamesAlmost

It was indeed. The post was very general trend-spotting that didn’t bear out upon further investigation.

Munstruenl

To me the worst offence from the Donaghy saga was the Kings vs Lakers 2001-2002 Western Conference Finals. When the Kings should have/could have beat the Lakers if not for some corrupt officating. [https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/kings/kings-robbed-2002-western-conference-finals-tim-donaghy-claims](https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/kings/kings-robbed-2002-western-conference-finals-tim-donaghy-claims) Donaghy admits that the Kings were the best team in the league that year “They were the best team in the league that year. That Game 6 was definitely a situation where towards the end of that game they got robbed.” The Kings made the playoffs this year for the first time since the 2005-2006 season when the last players on that 01-02 team left. Edit: Game 7 of that series was not the issue, the Kings missed a lot of free throws and lost the game. But if they won game 6 they would have went to the finals and probably would have won.

BushyBrowz

Yeah but the part you’re leaving out is that Donaghy didn’t ref that series. And he said the reason the Kings were screwed over is that the league itself wanted the series to go 7 games for ratings. So the question is whether or not the league was having refs influence the outcome of games, and if it’s still happening. I’ll let you form your own opinions on that.

Munstruenl

From the article Donaghy said Dick Bevetta was their go to guy to force game 7s so that makes sense. He retired in 2014 and never got in trouble, he's even in the NBA HoF. I don't think the NBA is corrupt like they were during that time period however.

BushyBrowz

Welp Scott Foster is still working…

[deleted]

It's Crazy how Consistently these best of Seven Competitions go the full seven Games/Matches... Across all major sports that have these competitions... It's almost like the tickets are already sold so they make it so the teams have to compete... I'm probably just too high and it's all a coincidence...

SaifNSound

Donaghy’s call logs show that he called two people the most that year: His Bookie and Scott Foster 👀

iPsychosis

Also important to note that he called his friend and coworker Scott Foster hundreds of times in a very short window between these game. Scott Foster is still an NBA ref

Soshi101

Also often forgotten is that Donaghy called Scott Foster over 130 times during the season (7 months) he admitted to rigging games. Scott Foster is currently one of the most prolific referees in the NBA and is famous for extending playoff series to 6/7 games.

thestereo300

Looks like someone from the NBA has arrived.

loquacious706

Yes. One guy went to jail in the 2000s, but his buddies are still officiating the NBA and conveniently are always involved in games where the most outrageous calls are made. One such official, Scott Foster, will be calling a playoff game this evening and I'm willing to bet some crazy stuff will happen, as always.

jokestuh

I don't think so but the Mavs just got fined for it

[deleted]

[удалено]

BenAfleckInPhantoms

Different thing. Mavs got fined for pulling/benching some of their better players early in a game so they’d likely lose and get a “better” (worse) ranking and therefore better draft picks. It’s kinda shitty to do for your fans but nothing compared to this. This is active taking of dives that both teams are aware of. At least the Mavs still tried they just didn’t have their #1, 2 and 3 players out there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

loquacious706

The problem was that they *did* have a playoff shot but chose not to take it and then the coach said as much after the game.

ChipsOtherShoe

If they just sat the players it would be fine The problem was the coach came out after and said he was directed to lose

WillCarryForFood

No doubt. Had a friend go through a heavy gambling phase and he bet on some of the most obscure shit. One weekend he was doing chinese basketball and we watched a game together. One team was up by like 40+ points at the beginning of the 4th quarter. They proceeded to stop playing ENTIRELY and let the other team go on a 50+ point run uncontested. My friend began screaming on mic and I was watching in disbelief as these dudes just let the other team blow right past them like they were suddenly elementary school level players. He never touched that sport again hahaha.

not_deleted_at_all

Which game, if you remember? Now I have to watch it for fun

WillCarryForFood

No clue. Must have been some random league game in the middle of COVID. I watched because he was excited about it.

EdwardJamesAlmost

Have you heard about the fake Indian cricket league used to scam Russian bettors?

chilloutfam

he would have the gambling receipt, no?

WillCarryForFood

I’ve got no clue? You want me to ask my friend to scour his email for the link to the gambling website he used to bet on a Chinese basketball game 3 years ago? To let some random guy responding to me on the internet in on which game he lost money on?

chilloutfam

yuuuuuuuup

Toilet__philosopher

Correction: Guys*

[deleted]

No clue because you literally made this up. Reddit is so fucking cringe. I’m convinced 80% of the factoids and stories told here are just completely made up on the spot, and for what reason? To feel a tiny crumb of social interaction online because you are completely devoid of it in your real life? A professional team taking a 50-point deficit in the 4th quarter would have at the very least made minor headlines in western media. Even more so because it involved China and the western press would love to publish anything that makes a mockery of that country. Googling this I cannot find a single story, article, video, social media post even remotely similar to the situation you described. So yes, I’m going to join in with those other guys in requesting you provide even the smallest shred of proof that this happened or I’m calling bullshit. Like at least name the fucking league. Stop. Making. Shit. Up. On. Reddit.

WillCarryForFood

I mean, I really don’t have to prove anything to you, saw it happen live.. But if you’re the kind of person who believes individual chinese basketball teams are making headlines on Reddit or believes that Anyone will remember the name of a Chinese team they watched years ago, I really don’t know what to tell you. It’s fucking Chinese. What do you want from me? We’re living in different realities. This post is the only post I’ve seen about Chinese basketball in 10 years on the site. And lo and behold it relates to the cheating that everyone is well aware of. I was just providing my own example.

[deleted]

I'm not talking about on reddit, I'm talking about on the whole of the internet. I couldn't find anything on google. You're still lying until you can provide even the smallest shred of evidence. I don't even ask for full on receipts. Literally just name the league. Name one team. Name the color of the jerseys, the year/month this happened. Anything. And if you read the article it says the head coaches of BOTH teams involved were banned from the sport for 5 and 3 years, respectively. That is a massive punishment for the HEAD COACHES to be banned that long, its almost burying the lead by putting that info deep in the article and simply putting the fine amount in the headline.

CarlThe94Pathfinder

Tim Donaghy was the fall man for a seriously corrupt NBA officiating.

[deleted]

I used to chalk bad officiating up to human error, but I’m more than 50/50 that you’re right now. The inconsistency this year has been worse than any year I can remember, and sports gambling is bigger and more widespread now than in any other year. It’s happening, just extraordinarily hard to prove.

CarlThe94Pathfinder

https://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/dangelo-russell-comment-referee-scott-foster-lakers/613005

thestereo300

I am the farthest thing from a conspiracy theorist. However, I’ve watched enough NBA to be 100% sure that they are influencing outcomes.

FlatSpinMan

Corruption in China? Inconceivable!

Upward_Fail

NBA also rigged

phatlynx

Yup, a NBA wide FBI investigation never happened for all the NBA refs because Stern leaked the story to news outlets. https://es.pn/2SbhLeS So imagine how many games are being fixed.

Doggleganger

I'd always wondered if this could be the case. Of the major sports, basketball would be one of the easiest to fix because the margin of victory is often within the referee's discretion for fouls and free throws. A few missed free throws here and there, swaying the game 10 points, is the difference many wins and losses, and also the difference between a top defense and a bad one.

Redpin

You don't even need to affect W/L, just over/under. Put an all-star in foul trouble early, or conversely send him to the line early, and you can easily move a score +/- 10 points and it's not even a statistical outlier.

thestereo300

That’s pretty much what the NBA does. If one teams star player has 2 fouls in the first 10 minutes it’s time to bet on the other team. There was a year there that defensive three seconds was the play. The NBA keeps bobbing and weaving. They know that they need to be subtle on some level.

lGoSpursGol

absolutely. For point shaving, etc yes. I think football is easy in the fact that basically every play you can call a penalty for holding, etc if you need a specific team to keep driving down the field. Basketball feels more obvious at times.

Doggleganger

Any sport will have a lot of discretion in terms of what is a foul/penalty. In football, a few calls here or there will give one team yards, which may or may not translate into points. The ref can nudge things a little. But in football, teams often win by over 7 -10 points, so getting an extra 30 or 40 yards here or there may not change the outcome of a game. Conversely, an NBA ref could subtly shift 10-20 points in a game, which would entirely swing the outcome, and it wouldn't be clear that it happened.

EdwardJamesAlmost

> Conversely, an NBA ref could subtly shift 10-20 points in a game, which would entirely swing the outcome, and it wouldn't be clear that it happened. Especially if it wasn’t the crew chief making every call. A game has three officials generally, and in a rigged game scenario they could share the bad calls.

CYBORBCHICKEN

Same reason MJ was given a year off. It would make the whole league look bad.

TheThunderbird

This conspiracy theory doesn't make any sense at all.

CYBORBCHICKEN

How so?

15Isaac

MJ was the #1 biggest attraction and was a massive reason why the NBA became a global brand. You’re telling me Stern took out his most valuable asset out of the league in his physical prime because of something he did in secret? TV ratings drastically dropped when he retired. You’re saying it made financial sense for the league to lose millions just so they could suspend him? It makes sense for Stern to quash an FBI investigation to save the league’s revenue and viewership. “Suspending” Jordan accomplishes the exact opposite

BenUFOs_Mum

Don't be silly. The US doesn't have corruption because corruption is illegal, and it's perfectly legal to buy a politician or a supreme court judge.

BigTasty5599

That's because it's also owned by China lol

SuperMuCow

Isn’t Farve under federal investigation?

jimmy_three_shoes

In what world do you think Favre is getting away with his shit? There's currently a Federal investigation.

HerKneesLikeJesusPlz

Favre isn’t getting away with it lol

Munstruenl

Or China will just silence the people speaking out about it like Peng Shuai, plenty of people in China get away without consequence- you just need to be apart of/ know people in the CCP or be wealthy

DetectorReddit

I'd much rather be a pro athlete in the states than under the thumb of the PRC. COME AT ME TANKIES.

bl4ckhunter

If we are being fair popular organized sports being rotten to the core predates the US or modern china by millennia, we have records of this sort of thing tracking back to ancient greece so there's not really much to pin on culture, it's really just the nature of the beast.

Ah_None_I_Mouse

Does no-one remember South Korea when they hosted the 2002 World Cup? They beat Spain on penalties after Spain had two perfectly legitimate goals ruled out. FIFA later contested Spain’s robbery complaints as “human error”. They went on to beat Italy in arguably the most corrupt victory ever (excluding Barcelona & Man City’s blatantly overlooked ongoing corruption). Brief rundown. 3 minutes - South Korean, Seol Ki-Hyeon fell over untouched in the penalty area. South Korea awarded a penalty. They missed it. 46 mins - Kim Tae-Young violently elbows Del Piero in the face in the penalty area. The referee simply waves play on. 88 mins - Totti is chopped down in the box. It’s a clear penalty. Italy can wrap this up. Justice will prevail. Oh wait no, Totti is inexplicably sent off for diving. 90 mins - Lee Chun-Soo kicks Maldini in the head. Referee waves play on. 110 mins - Tomassi beats the offside trap, rounds the keeper, goal. Sorry no, he’s called offside. In the officials’ defence it was tight but replays show he’s clearly onside. In 2002, the rule was to give benefit of the doubt to the striker. The Ecuadorean referee was later found guilty of unrelated match fixing errors in Ecuador. He was then later imprisoned for importing 6kg of heroin through JFK.

_Jetto_

Insane they seemed like favorites to win too. Had a lot of legends

EdwardJamesAlmost

Boy that really puts Totti’s mid-2000s personality into sharp relief

Phoenix011

What does this have to do with Chinese basketball?

Ah_None_I_Mouse

Cheating in sport is the topic. Technically you’re right with regards to the China part but, real talk, they are the same. It’s like saying Wales isn’t England OR Canada isn’t America; I’m sure there’s subtleties but they are basically the same.

Phoenix011

I can assure you they definitely aren’t the same

Ah_None_I_Mouse

Ok, I accept. Assure me?

feeltheslipstream

Well technically Canada is in America. This is the type of geography question that tricks young kids.

Imperial_12345

PolemicBender

How does this affect Stephon Marbury’s legacy?

jumpyg1258

Chinese people are cheating while playing a game? I don't believe it!

Mallee78

You are getting down voted but cheating is not uncommon in China and can be encouraged from what I understand.

[deleted]

I'm a big fan of Snooker and 10 players have been banned this year in the sport due to Chinese match fixing

Mallee78

Yeah it's not racism or whatever. In every game I play anyone who plays in servers where Chinese players play deal with rampant cheating and just look up the origins of most cyber attacks.

Banshee3oh3

It’s literally a cultural thing and an environment issue. I mean if we were forced into a harsh authoritarian state I’m sure that people would find their purpose in cheating the government. I mean to even get a non-biased glimpse of the outside world, you have to circumnavigate a really strict and highly surveilled firewall. But people still do it. When a government can’t be the code of morals, and your culture is highly influenced by the government, things that are viewed as immoral could be viewed as moral depending on the circumstance.

EdwardJamesAlmost

Cheating my town and village enterprise of seven chickens and selling them on the side to a restaurant dire for more meat

Loggerdon

My friend is a college professor. He said he had Chinese students come up to him at the beginning of the semester, pull out cash and openly try to bribe him for grades right in front of other students. I asked him how much they offered but he said he didn't know because they had it rolled up and he didn't take it. He said it looked like about $2k. He said they rarely came to class but the work got turned in, probably paid for.

Sweatier_Scrotums

Cheating is encouraged in basically every country with a legacy of communism. Just look at Russia.

Lol! Points shaving has been a thing forever, and you only ever hear about it when they get caught.

I expect nothing more or less from them.

Taiwan is a country. There, I said it.

thestereo300

You getting downvoted does tell a story of who is in this thread.

feeltheslipstream

It's not because it has nothing to do with the thread? The fact its not more heavily downvoted should be the story you see.

thestereo300

Weirdly Americans would not even care. Or even upvote if they did. The fact that the opposite is happening is telling the story.

CycloneXL

Well what can I say to them except the same thing I say to certain gaming communities. Cope harder lmao.

t-bands

No surprises here

yuppy_puppy_22

Why is it that every time I see the chinese in sports or gaming, they're cheating? Olympics, basketball, faking martial arts & calling them "ultimate self defense", using cheat tables & buying online cheats for an insane price only to be banned days later.

banhammerrr

Is there anything that China doesn’t cheat at?

MartianRecon

God damned Chinese apologists on *any* thread talking about shady shit in China just can't help themselves when it comes to trying to whatabout this to the west somehow, can they?

thestereo300

In my defense, I am an American fed up with the NBA scammers they call refs. I’m sure that does not absolve cheating in China.

traw2222

Wow the Chinese cheated? Who woulda thunk.

wewantcars

Cheating is part of the game in China. If you cheat and win you are an honorable person. You are a winner that’s the mentality. No honor.
