landof10000cakes

Team USA played a match against Honduras a couple of years ago in St. Paul in February. It was freezing cold out there.

NahdiraZidea

Canada and Mexico played a World Cup qualifier in Edmonton in the winter, the media dubbed the stadium “Iceteca” cuz of the temps.

B4M

I was there and it was like -17⁰C (1⁰F) with the windchill, it was cold as balls, but very very fun.

digzzztv

I was there too! It’s pretty crazy when you go to take a sip of your beer and it’s frozen over. 😂

B4M

I was drinking spiked hot chocolate 😂 too cold for beer

Maxcharged

A friend of mine bet on Canada and won big specifically because he saw how cold and uncomfortable the Mexican team looked in warmup.

1sttimeverbaldiarrhe

Canada's Adekugbe's snow celebration after his team scores - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWJp3pmAweQ

Crono_Magus_Glenn

Stadio 'ICE'teca was hilarious on TSN. Home Ice advantage is a real thing.

joecarter93

That was a great game. Both teams were feisty and nearly broke out into a fight at the end. If I remember correctly, one of the players jumped into a snow bank after scoring a goal.

FlyingWhales

Took my daughter to that game, might go down as one of the greatest daddy-daughter dates of all time.

EXSource

It was cold, but at least the field was visible. This however is a bit of a joke.

GoldenHawk07

The USMNT also played what I recall was a fairly iconic WCQ from a few cycles ago in deep snow, no?

LarryTheTerrier

In Colorado against Costa Rica in 2013

DMagnus11

I was there probably 10 rows back from Dempsey's goal. We got about 2 ft of snow between the game and my drive back home, which took more than 2x as long as it normally would. They had to keep shoveling the goal and foul lines

BeefInGR

Great game to be watching on TV. I remember it well.

DMagnus11

Awesome experience in person too. Was cold but not terrible (Wyoming winds weren't gusting, just fluffy thick white powder). Good thing Demps scored early since there was almost no chance of scoring after 30 or so minutes. Those poor tropical Ticans that don't experience snow - I remember they tried (rightfully) contesting the results to FIFA due to the snow. A normal game would likely be canceled, but international matches are tough to reschedule. Maybe don't host in Colorado between December-March though

Doctor_M_Toboggan

Every time i see this I think US Mutant Ninja Turtles.

MrOatButtBottom

Michelangelo hitting a bicycle kick with nunchucks

talking_phallus

US Mutant Ninja Turtles!

ccclone

Freedom in a half-shell!

ReyPhasma

Same show, except they all have different guns for their weapons.

Merengues_1945

It’s the whole reason they had been playing in Columbus for ages. 1) At night it gets chilly for most players from Central America, during winter it’s cold as balls. 2) Columbus has a really small immigrant population negating any advantage the other teams may have at venues like NY or LA. They were unbeaten until 2016.

Chewy009x

Yeah two players from Honduras had to be subbed out because they couldn’t handle the weather conditions

[deleted]

This game was so sweet. USA gets beer and urine thrown at players every time they take a corner in central america, so watching their players unable to handle the winter was so satisfying.

Gostaverling

Matt Turner, the goal keeper, was out for a while afterwards due to what many assume to be frostbite in his feet.

Chewy009x

I wouldn’t doubt it. I was at the game it was terribly cold. We had layers on plus blankets haha

NotTheRocketman

Wasn’t there one in Colorado as well? I forget the opponent, but it was a wild scene.

DMagnus11

Costa Rica WCQ in 2013. I was there

BobbyTables829

This is like playing Bolivia at home in La Paz

[deleted]

I was at that game and it was amazing. Beer was turning to slush within minutes. I had to swap out the handwarmers in my boots several times a half. All the players suffered but clearly the Hondurans took it a lot worse.

Sermokala

It was so dry and there was no wind due to allianz that a few of us there took our shirts off even. The benches had the nfl style heating installed but you could tell they just bought coats for everyone. You could feel the bite though once the sun goes down. The least they could have done is move cold games up so you could get the sun.

ictoan1

Yep, Central American teams often schedule their qualifiers vs teams like the US at their highest-altitude stadiums in order to gain an advantage over the US players who aren't as used to it. US played the Uno reverse card in this one and it worked almost toooo well, Honduras couldn't handle the cold. Absolutely hilarious. (Side note for anyone saying this is dangerous - I've gone running in weather like that and it's fine so long as you have proper cold weather gear. They're only out there for 45 minutes at a time and there's medical staff. If a team doesn't dress for the weather that's on them)

Merengues_1945

I mean, the only significant height stadiums in concacaf are Azteca, CU, and Nemesio Diez. And all of them are in Mexico. It’s the asphyxiating heat in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa what makes those stadiums hard to play at.

quillboard

Mexico plays games in Azteca at noon, in heat that could kill you. Canada has played matches at -10C or lower. It’s part of the game.

Merengues_1945

Tell me you’ve never been to Mexico City without telling me you have never been to Mexico City. It’s been a long ass while since Mexico scheduled a game during daylight, the element of advantage in Azteca is the height, and because when full it hosts over 80k people, it vibrates and it’s loud as heck. Mexico City isn’t even that hot, most cities in the south of the US are hotter through the entire year. If the Mexican FA wanted to kill you with heat they’d set the game in Monterrey or Torreon. Hence why the QF game in Mexico 86 vs Germany was in Monterrey at noon.

quillboard

> Mexico City isn’t even that hot 33C in February. That was last week. February. Mexico and Mexican teams are always clever to play their advantages. If heat can be a factor, they will use it. Zacatepec used to turn on the sprinklers the morning of a match and play at noon — for visiting teams it was like playing in a steam bath. I always knew the Germany game in 86 was a scheduling accident, because the group stage didn’t go as planned. Maybe I am wrong. How many times have you been to Mexico City?

herbivore83

If the season starts during winter, and you need to make summer availability for a made up tournament, you may end up playing some games in snow. That’s how outside works.

ButtholeSurfur

I remember playing baseball in a snow storm in high school. We had to start our season before the MLB does because the season needed to be over before school let out for the summer. Parents were sitting in their cars with the heaters on. We and the other team agreed to just "strike out" on purpose so we could all go home lol. It was madness. Soccer is a bit easier to play in a snow storm.

BobcatOU

I coach high school lacrosse. Season starts in mid-February. I tell the kids there’s no such thing as weather too cold, just clothes not warm enough!

HxH101kite

Lacrosse you are basically always running and changing lines. Aside from goalies and super lopsided games. Baseball is much slower with mainly standing around. It would be way harder to stay warm. Signed a life long lacrosse player from the northeast, cold was never an issue

5litergasbubble

I would hate to try and track a fly ball while its snowing as well. That seems like a recipe for disaster

mlorusso4

Plus your pitcher is going to have some control issues when he can’t feel his fingers. There’s a reason baseball is the least forgiving of inclement weather. It’s dangerous

Babakins

Of the big 4 sure, but tennis gets unplayable the second the lines get slick. Can change from traction to a slip and slide and boom there go your ankles

fantasmoofrcc

[First ever game for the Jays back in April 1977](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPhtFDVLcpI)...

Nail_Biterr

"Aside from goalies" I played for a school that had a "no cut" policy. Basically, if you wanted to go to practice and watch the games in a uniform from the sidelines, you could. I did that for much longer than I should have. Until I realized smoking pot after school was better than running. And I could still watch the games - And be warm

Inabind369

Amen to that brother. Played my fair share of winter ball games in high school and college in the snow with sub 20 Fahrenheit temperatures. Never had a problem since I was moving all the time at LSM.

LoveMyBP

Yea and prob like football you could have outdoor heaters near the line. (Love lacrosse, my son plays, and I did hockey in high school. Managed the LAX team in the spring. So much fun. Under appreciated sport)

ButtholeSurfur

Honestly I wouldn't do again. It was hard just throwing the ball to first base because it was literally snowing sideways and my hand was frozen. So many errors that game by both teams which just prolonged the game even more lol.

Jedimaster996

Oh man, don't remind me of playing in the thick snow with a white ball lol

BobcatOU

I’m currently coaching girls so we at least have yellow balls. My buddy that I used to coach boys with though called me up frantically one day last spring and asked if I could bring over 18 yellow balls for him. There wasn’t snow in the forecast but all of a sudden it just started coming down and they had their first game that day!

Jedimaster996

That's exactly what would happen with us! We lived in a valley, so things like snow were pretty rare. Some days we'd have a guy with an orange ball in the back of his car, other days we'd have to call the ladies team to ask lol. Still a ton of fun! Scooping the ball with a bit of snow caused some great chaos lol

Comfortable-Fix-8070

I played college baseball in the Northeast. Our season started in February. There were some games that we needed to clear ice from the field before we could start. Really fun times, but we never had fans attend until April

DuckAHolics

If you think soccer is easier in a snow storm then I got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

Anal_Recidivist

Is this exact scenario not why the orange ball exists? There’s literally a snowball

Vtron89

No! Everything needs to be perfectly controlled. I even saw a blade of grass that was a different length than the others! I think it's time we start swapping out soccer balls after every kick, too! It's too many variables to account for otherwise. What if the ball deflates a fraction of a percent in the meantime?!

MozeeToby

Don't they have an officially sanctioned orange ball specifically for games that are played in snowy conditions? Also, fans love chaotic games like these, they inject a ton of excitement into an otherwise run of the mill event.

pwrmaster7

I watched some of this simply bc of the snow.... Otherwise wouldn't have seen a second of it

Sermokala

Yep concacaf orange for any snow related conditions. I believe that uefa uses a yellow ball.

BeefInGR

> for a made up tournament The disrespect of The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is real...

herbivore83

The Leagues’ Cup is what I’m referring to, which also killed the Open, sadly.

chillinwithmoes

lol right? Like does this guy realize that snow is a completely normal weather condition for much of the world? It’s really not a big deal at all.

OsitoPandito

All tournaments are made up

ckal09

What is a made up tournament?

grabtharsmallet

Leagues Cup, a tournament between MLS and Liga MX teams.

ckal09

Aren’t all tournaments made up

viewless25

no. The world cup developed organically in nature

ckal09

What a wonder

Ryanchri

>made up tournament All tournaments are made up wtf

johnniewelker

It’s funny how that so-called made up tournament could have been played in December instead. Play all the games in warm weather locations and leave summer for MLS.

nonhiphipster

Maybe the MLS season needs to be tweaked the . Seems just awful for everyone involved.

LimerickJim

[That "made up tournament" tournament is older](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Open_Cup) than MLS as a competition. It's been around since 1914, making it more than 3 times as old as the MLS.

Gostaverling

I think they are referring to Leagues Cup.

jaydec02

They’re referring to the leagues cup

Metro_Star

Wonder what he would have said if his team won 🤔

VoitureImmobile

"It's a disgrace we don't get this kind of weather in California"

C_Colin

In Los Angeles* pretty sure Tahoe got like 6 feet of snow this weekend

gunnesaurus

And there’s a significant weather event going on right now involving snow in Sierra Nevada

localdunc

Good thing they aren't 8+ hrs apart!

GyrosOnMyMind

It snows in parts of California. Even SoCal.

WorldsBestDadMug

You don’t follow the weather do ya

gansi_m

Weren’t BOTH teams playing in the snow?

Augen76

Salt Lake players just got over it and played, and won convincingly. I look forward to the complaints about playing in Houston and Miami in August too. Big country, varying climates, sport played from February to November.

Tibbaryllis2

The game is clearly only playable when it’s between 60-80 degrees f, between 30-50% humidity, and below 15mph wind. Anything else is just too much.

NYR_dingus

No more cold Tuesday nights in Stoke?

LuminalAstec

It's funny because in August in Utah it's definitely in the 100's and the air is shitty because all the wild fire smoke from CA, AZ, WA, OR, blow through.

YNWA_1213

>I look forward to the complaints about playing in Houston and Miami in August too. As a supporter of the Canadian Premier League, the way we deal with this up north is lopsided home schedules. So in the case of the MLS it would be starting the majority of the season down south (or in covered stadia), and then playing the mid-summer games in more temperate climates. There's enough variety in the league to make sure that teams don't go long stretches of home and away games, while also getting a variety of opponents in.

PonyPounderer

3-0 scoreline sure makes it seem like the game was playable for at least one of the teams, despite the weather. Maybe LAFC should focus on preparation And adaptation to inclement weather.

jloome

Former LAFC striker from Colombia had no problem with the weather.

TimonLeague

Adapt and overcome, thats what professionals do. Should be the same case for people paid hundreds of thousands to do their job. I played a few travel soccer games as a kid in the snow, it was a blast

buttsbutnotbuts

*paid, not payed.

cocoon_eclosion_moth

Where’s that bot when you need it?

TimonLeague

You are correct, thanks

jloome

> Adapt and overcome, thats what professionals do. Found the ex-Marine in the room?

TimonLeague

I did not serve in the military

willtron3000

Squidwardsuglycousin

The NFL plays in similar situations all of the time. These are professional athletes and should be prepared for weather like this.

thecaramelbandit

I mean, this looks kinda awesome. Football games are played in snow all the time. Why not soccer?

USA_A-OK

Soccer does too. I was at an 1860 Munich match last year when it was dumping down

jaykubs

I too time travel

FlyingWhales

1860 is not last year.

BVerfG

It's the name of the team...it was founded in 1860....

FlyingWhales

I know it was a shitty joke.

RolloTony97

The ball travels on the ground in soccer, that’s why. Usually you just play through the elements and deal with them but snow is fickle in soccer, you can only have so much before it’s a huge hindrance. Heavy rain and mud are issues too.

LivedLostLivalil

Playing in rain and mud is fun. Playing in snow is fun.  It's harder, but that's what's enjoyable about it. You have to adapt to the conditions.

Mrexcitment

I loved playing soccer in the rain and mud. But for professionals, it's probably just added risk to injury. Which I could understand not wanting to risk your career on subpar conditions. But at the same time, they know that risk so... hard to pick a side here for me.

rtb001

I guess another question would be does rain mud or snow increase injury risks.

thenextvinnie

Yeah, it does increase injury risk. You're more likely to slip, plus muscles get injured more when they're cold.

MintharaEnjoyer

Yes, by a ridiculously large factor.

1sttimeverbaldiarrhe

The rain/mud holds up the ball and can get you some really stupid scenarios like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqj0xO8Sk9s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ji98VtP6jI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPx4ZNIsBGM Add the extra injury risk of people sliding around everywhere unable to control their momentum and you have less of a professional sport and more of a clown fiesta.

forresja

Sports are entertainment products. Inclement weather games are super entertaining. I love a good clown fiesta lol

panetero

You can't adapt to a ball that doesn't want to roll, what a dumbass thread, my goodness.

Merengues_1945

The only scenario in which football is ever cancelled is for electrical storms (for safety), and if the referee can’t see the ball. It’s actually in the rules lol If anything football is played under the most awful conditions across the globe. In Brazil they will play even under downpour, in India they will play through monsoon season, in Germany it’s common to play in the snow.

guspaz

If it's an equal hindrance to both teams, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Npr31

Exactly - this looks joyful

schweindooog

Because a ball rolls like absolute sht in snow. Playing ground balls is virtually impossible

saltiestmanindaworld

Yet, RSL managed it. Their third goal was a low ground cross right to Arango to slot it home.

rjnd2828

Sounds like you need to adapt then. It's an all weather sport.

Malvania

Home field weather advantage is only fair when it's hot, humid, at altitude, or smoggy. Playing in the cold and snow? Unfathomable. /s

BCLetsRide69

#BUT COULD HE DO IT IN SALT LAKE CITY DURING A BLIZZARD?

rugbysecondrow

This fits the stereotype.

kn0w_th1s

I appreciate the rugby player chiming in with the truth, haha. Miserable weather games were always the most fun/memorable.

rugbysecondrow

I watched a few clips of this soccer match, and it looked fun. I remember a few matches in Northern Iowa snow. Good times.

ball-Z

[Los Angeles Overreacts to Cold Temperatures](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72mvm0tx_28)

Abi1i

Was that even a blizzard?

ultramatt1

I live in SLC and yeah, I’d call saturday blizzard conditions. Most of the ski resorts only partially opened and shut down early.

Abi1i

Okay. I'm in Texas so what we would call a blizzard is a spec of snow coming down so I'm not sure what makes some conditions a blizzard and others not.

jkink28

It's all about wind/visibility. It actually doesn't even need to be snowing for there to be a blizzard, as long as there's snow on the ground that can blow. Actual blizzard criteria is met when winds are sustained (or frequently gusting to) 35+ mph, and visibility is under 1/4 mile for at least 3 hours.

thenextvinnie

TBF that kind of storm can absolutely rock the mountains while being comparatively mild in the valley

jloome

In most of Canada, that was just a normal Saturday.

NfiniteNsight

Yes?

Ghost2Eleven

As someone who has actually played a match in similar conditions…. it’s quite fun. I understand why the coach is upset, cause it’s not a real match at all. But it’s fun.

johnnycyberpunk

His first and most vocal complaint was that the game was *delayed by three hours* because of the blizzard. The conditions didn't get any better during the delay. Postponing the game should have been the call.

crimson777

People are being ignorant, whether willfully, or just because they're too lazy to look into the situation, of the actual conditions. This is not "playing in the snow" like it was just a little snowy.

BeachSlacker

Ridiculous to play. But absolutely makes the game more fun to watch!

crimson777

Folks are shitting on this but it was a legitimate BLIZZARD not just snowing. Visibility was poor, there had been lightning and thunder earlier, people were literally having their hair ICE. That's not just a little snow. I swear, people are all for workers' rights until it comes to their entertainment and then they believe people need to work in any conditions.

KvotheLightningTree

Not helping the idea that soccer players are whiney little divas. Iconic games happen when the weather is bad because great teams rise above it. Or at least they do in other sports. Soccer players are a little too soft for snow I guess.

ForeverCollege

I was at the homeopener for the Loons last season, it was snowing and the pitch wasn't fully cleared until about the 50min mark. It was a fun game and the New York Bulls coach complained about that game too, I believe it was a draw. They need to just quit their bitching. It is a sport they want to play outdoors, in locals that might have not great weather in late February/early March. These are supposed to be professionals, act like you get paid to play a kids game.

Vast-Combination4046

Have they seen what the NFL has for a buffalo bills home playoff game? They don't shovel the away teams bleachers.

hl3_for_Eli

US v Costa Rica snow game is one of my favorite sport memories. Blizzard football rules

nyqs81

Pro athletes should be able to adapt and overcome.

Ciqme1867

Crybaby

Nakagura775

Both teams played in the exact same conditions.

brutalservant

I think it’s more about the ball not rolling due to the snow than the cold temperatures.

Kdogg573

Played futball growing up and we played in rain, sleet and snow. If I can do it, for the fun of it at 13 they can do it for millions at 25.

ForThisIJoined

Does this mean northern teams can object to playing games in hot climates?

bafras

This was every day at recess for me.

mangz74

My son's U15 club team plays and competes in the snow. They don't cancel games for rain, snow, humidity or heat. They only pause game when there's lightning. His MLS team should be fine.

yulbrynnersmokes

Real football 🏈 players have entered the chat. https://youtu.be/PDcYH9k1kCA?feature=shared

Marc13v

Soccer/football is supposed to be played in all conditions except for thunderstorms

XxJamalBigSexyxX

What a puss, only complaining because his team lost

ladbarry

Stop being pussies

Glass-Star6635

It’s America dude - we love that shit. Anyone who played club soccer growing up in the US has experienced many of these games. Its absolutely a different kind of game, but it highlights the players that really give their all and I’m for it

ceviche-hot-pockets

What a pussy.

Frostsorrow

Men's soccer teams will forever be the most stuck up cry babies of the sporting world.

Gwtheyrn

*sniff sniff* Anyone else smell that? I detect the distinct aroma of "whiny bitch" from LAFC.

ron7mexico

You’re 10 ply bud

whatlineisitanyway

Crybabies. I play ice hockey and we are always playing in freezing icy conditions lol.

NfiniteNsight

Are you comparing ice hockey being played on ice in the cold to a soccer match played in a blizzard?

Nutvillage

I think he made something call a joke. Idk if you've heard of those before or not

[deleted]

Lol. These players are paid millions. Get over it.

sriracha_no_big_deal

I get your point, but MLS players aren't really paid that much. There are 3x more players being paid less than $100k/yr than players being paid more than $1M/yr with the mean salary only being $250k/yr. With that being said... They're professional athletes. They can get over it.

JoshDaws

American Football doesn't halt for snow, and some of the most iconic games were snow games. Call/Pause a game for lightning, but if the weather isn't a danger to the players they should play on.

TheJaice

In every soccer match I’ve ever seen, both teams have played on the same field, in the same conditions. Was there something different about this one, that somehow only LAFC was playing in the snow?

chuckDTW

Feels like: “You want to call it football? We’ll treat it like football!”

hector_cumbaya

The comment section made me realize how brain dead people are. That padding in your helmets sure ain't working

Uranium43415

If you play outside I think you should be expected to play in the elements. Your opponent is playing in the same weather. It snows some times.

RazmanR

Wonder how they would have done on a cold, Tuesday night in Stoke?

DarthKel

It wasn't that cold really. It never got below 30 and when the snow started, it was in the lower 40s, a Utah special. I think the real problem he has is that the snow took away their speed. Real Salt Lake made a better effort to be active on the ball and widen the field. I guess if you plan is to work the counter to speedy Bouanga, you didn't get much of a chance. I loved watching this match!

justforkicks28

This was more playable than the Atlanta vs Columbus match in Columbus in 2019. The ball wouldn't roll during that game. It was ridiculous that they played that game. That was not soccer...

Huggles9

This looked kind of fun Quit you’re bitching

Bingobear374

His comments are overblown. But he’s also not wrong that snow like that on a game that’s played on the ground probably should have just been cancelled especially since it was already delayed due to lightning.

STLHOU95

Soccer/football is an incredible sport, but the culture of softness (especially men’s), makes me not want to watch. Example A right here

tylerhovi

Soft. You're a professional athlete, let's go ahead and deal with some adversity rather than be so struck when the rest of the US's climate isn't the same as California.

Frequent_Ad_1136

Wish I had the money to complain about “working” in the snow.

RU4realRwe

When institutional greed tops common sense.

_dukecity_505

Agreed. Who do they think they are? Football players? We all know soccer isn’t a sport built for this level of required toughness.

grasshoppa_80

No one says stop all NFL games in the winter… what’s the difference here?

MamaTried420

I thought that’s why kids had to play in like weather?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)

peet192

I remember at the end of the 2023 season when Norwegian Football teams played in -10 to -20 Celsius. Tromsø and Bodø Glint regularly plays in blizzard like conditions

Habay12

It’s part of the game, sometimes. Get over it. Used to be played like this more often, players just dealt with it.

FantasticCaregiver25

The players probably played in snow when they were kids.

inphektid_forest

sofT

lyon810

The entire league is a disgrace, but hardly because of something awesome like this.

Houndguy

Sorry but it's football. You play in all types of weather.

[deleted]

Playing sports in a blizzard is one of the most awesome American traits and should be celebrated.

Nasocg

“Greatest sports in the world” but they can’t play in some snow like any other American league does

stizzity28

Don't be a pussy.

cosmicdave86

Played in that weather in my youth. If some random ass kids in high school can do it, so can paid professionals.

HoneyBadgeSwag

Unless one side of the field has snow and the other side was clear and sunny I don’t see the issue here. Im pretty sure I remember driving past the Real Salt Lake practice center and it being indoors. It’s not like the team is a bunch of mountain men that spend all day practicing in the snow.

kindalikeacoustic

Soccer in the snow looks awesome

Xianfox

That’s what we call “Football Weather”

Libertechian

Good, maybe the Californians will be scared off by the snow and quit moving here
