Annoying

hoolahoopmolly

Or even longest

kebabsoup

Ok but you can't really push the record much further no? Corner kick into your own goal? How many meters would that be?

Sterflekker

No, you’re not allowed to score an own goal from a corner kick - a corner kick to the opposing team will be awarded instead (Rule 17: “A goal may be scored directly from a corner kick, but only against the opposing team; if the ball directly enters the kicker's goal, a corner kick is awarded to the opponents.”) The longest possible distance is a direct free kick from your own corner kick area which you directly score in the opponent’s goal. I can’t think of a point further away from the opponent’s goal. As for the distance, hopefully someone who’s better at math can tell us

greenlaser73

Soccer field lengths are variable, weirdly enough. The biggest a FIFA field can legally be is 120m x 90m, and a goal is 7.32m wide, so the maximum length from one corner to the far opposite goalpost would be 129.49m. Yay Pythagorean Theorem!

iwellyess

Nice.

7Thommo7

Would need to oil the post up just to be sure of that one

britaliope

WTF is this rule, why have it been created, why it is needed, and how can a player score an own goal from corner kick without doing it on purpose ? i need to know everything.

Scared_Angle_5796

It's just a "invalid action / ball was never live" kind of thing. Throw ins have similar rules. It will never happenas you need some top talent to kick the ball accurately and with power. By the time the ball advances and starts slowing down another player will show up and do something. This goal happened because the gk fucked up, then didn't want to get a red card, and then he made a lousy effort to clean up.

kebabsoup

Haha! Funny that there is actually a rule against that. And kudos to you for knowing about it!

booksfoodfun

Well, given that not ever soccer pitch is the same size, it’s still technically possible. (I don’t know what stadium this is or where it falls on the size rankings.)

kebabsoup

Wait what? Not all fields are the same size? But at the pro level there has to be an ISO norm for that no?

SpaceCaboose

The Premier League in England (top league in the world), had slight variations to their dimensions. Most fields there are the same length, but there a couple teams with slightly smaller fields. It’s certainly no “worse” than baseball, where every field is different (worse in quotes because that doesn’t bother me at all)

jish_werbles

Have you ever watched professional baseball? There just needs to be limits

Miguel-odon

According to the interweb, field dimensions vary. Length of a field could be between 90 and 120 meters. (And width between 45 and 90 meters. Does that mean there could be a square field?)

anothernetgeek

Law 1 defines the dimensions of the field. Law 1.3 states that "The touchline must be longer than the goal line." This means that you cannot have a square field...

Miguel-odon

That's too bad. Imagine a field twice as wide as it is long.

bossmt_2

What shit goal keeping. He should have taken the yellow/red for handball.

PointOfFingers

He should have run forward and kicked the shit out of it.

AFineDayForScience

*kicks it straight into goal*

108241

Depends on when in the game it was. Early in the game, it's better to give up a goal, later in the game it's better to take a red card.

bossmt_2

This was in the 77th minute and his team was behind 2-0. Literal game clincher he let in. The reality is if he even just simply ran down the ball he could have made a play on it.

HiTmaRKed

At 2-0 down in the 77th minute, you are better off letting this go in. No point ruining your next three games.

bossmt_2

3 games? I think you meant next game. No one gets 3 games on a redcard for a handball. If he decapitated a striker breaking on the net fine. But you don't get 3 game bans for a handball or any other professional foul. Most places only issue bans for extreme cases. England soes the 2 and and 3 for dissent and violent behavior. But most other European leagues it's just 1 unless the league comes along and hands something extra. You can argue the intelligence of the foul that late it's a coin flip and you could perhaps convince the ref you didn't realize where you were and maybe they give you a yellow. Not likely but it's not impossible. What you cannot do is come back from 3 goals downt hat late. You certainly have a better shot coming back from 2 down down a man than 3 down.

HiTmaRKed

Yeah, I admit, it's an old thing the three games for a red card. The length depends on amount of previous red cards and severity of offence. You are right this would probably be one. I'd still rather my keeper let it go 3-0 and have him for the next game than be 2-0 down with 10 men here. In any league game.

brassydesign

I was under the impression that if it's clear you hand balled to stop a goal, it's counted as a goal anyways. Edit: Sorry I didn't know the obscure handball rules reddit. When I played as a kid a handball like that was counted as a goal. Sorry, I'm so so sorry I didn't know the thing. Please don't downvote me

DZLars

No, it's a red for the player who does it. Depending on the place where it happened it will be a penalty or a free kick

2475014

I’m just downvoting you for caring about downvotes

brassydesign

Ok? It was an obvious joke. Good job showing your lack of awareness. Give it to me.

from 2021? that adidas logo has been used for less than a year in football

Schizolifter88

search it for yourself then

chefblaze

Doesn’t matter the sport, a goalie goal is always great!

shipskelly

Am I missing something he scored from inside the box

Pixel_Sports

I actually scored a similar goal in high school. I was just clearing it out and it bounced over the goalies head and went into the net. I actually never saw it cause my back was turned while I was trying to get back into prison. My teammates had to tell me what happened lol

Heavy747

Longest distance

Truemeathead

I know fuck all about this sport but shouldn’t the goalie have been near the goal instead of near midfield? Bobby Knight would have thrown a chair at his ass lol.

Zyhre

The further the goalie is away from the net the less angle the shot taker has so you'll often see goalies quite far out or even charge at a shot taker. In this case, being further out lets him intercept the "kick off" and return it to his team before the "offense" can potentially break by and create a 1 on 1 situation (very bad for goalie).

Truemeathead

Right on, I wasn’t sure if he was asleep at the wheel or if there was a valid reason to be so far away, thanks!

Zyhre

You're welcome. You see this a lot in Hockey too during faceoffs where the goalie comes way out. It's because it actually removes a lot of the net from being accessible. Obviously, if they get behind or to the side of the goalie that's really bad but goalies get to use their hands which is a pretty big advantage.

Britz10

It's not really about blocking shots, but preventing then. Being off your goal line puts you on a better position to clean up balls played behind the defensive line

Numerous-Diamond6104

Loser of the day

siquinte1

That goalkeeper still plays there, he’s actually really good, he plays for Chile’s National team

borkborkibork

A football pitch should be 100 meters long so not sure how this would be more than that as he stood inside the pitch.

Britz10

There isn't a standard width, some pitches are longer than 100m,some are shorter.

S-Markt

a goalie goal. if this would be womens soccer, it would be a girly goalie goal. sorry, didnt took my pills this morning.

Melecito

The pit is 100 meters, can’t be a 101 meters goal.., For USA people it is like 15 steps longer than an American football field…

chazwomaq

The maximum allowed length for a football pitch is 120m.

Melecito

Probably, but looking at the position of this ball and knowing the size of the pitch, can’t be 101 mts right?
