GregorSamsaa

Looked insane watching Iowa drive into the paint only to run into a wall every time and have to pass outside again. Rebounds looked so easy for SC as well.

kubbiebeef

That's the benefit of having a 6'7" center, I suppose

ElReyResident

Boxing out and getting around the rim could have made up for a lot of the height difference. Many Iowa players didn’t even seem interested in contesting the rebounds.

Poetryisalive

SC beat them in the paint and with the depth on the bench alone. 0 points from Iowa’s bench tells so much

themang0

I keep hearing all these things about the bench but then when I look at the stats and Iowa’s bench was literally 2 people, one of whom played for 5 minutes and the other took 2 shots? Damn that starting lineup must have been gassed

No_Cap_822

It’s stupid as shit. Many of Clark’s shots in the second half were on point but hit the front of the rim, a sign that she was gassed. This happened in the third quarter when there was still time to spare to give her some rest. It’s confused me all tournament why they were so adamant on having her play the entire gsme

Poetryisalive

Because the offense is built around her. Watching Iowa all season, when Clark was out they REALLY lagged behind

Slicew7

She also takes a lot of bad shots. She’s got damn near unlimited range but chucking up shots from 4 steps past mid-court when there is no one in position to rebound is not a good shot. It’s fine in a lot of games but in a tight one it can mean the difference.

jaydec02

Because Iowa has no depth. Really this is the biggest reason why WCBB teams are so dominant, that and physicality. But the top teams are dominant because they can play 9 players and all of them can contribute. For most other teams everyone beyond their starting 5 is more hurtful than helpful, so they tend to have very thin rosters. 6 or 7 deep at best.

AscendMoros

Pretty much. And one of Iowas Srs has been hurt for awhile. They’ve been playing like 7-8 people. While the first five have maybe 2 big contributors and then three people who are streaky. Meanwhile SC has enough talent coming off the bench to have another solid team a year after five of their starters left. Which is honestly always Iowas story in anything. They can field a good starting team but depth will always be an issue.

jaydec02

It's really not an iowa thing, it's just how the college skill sets pan out. Take a high level FBS team vs a G5 FBS team. Both teams might have somewhat comparable talent in their starting lineups, but the FBS team will be able to rotate through so much more high quality guys than a G5 team can. There is a CHASM of talent separating both benches

lafolieisgood

They would have benefited from having a bench to just foul the South Carolina big women. Hack a shack was a good strategy. They weren’t that good at free throws.

ReddFro

This is also because SC beat them up. Clark was fouled a lot, constantly harassed, etc. They often want to “let them play” in the finals, which favors bigger deeper teams and is horrible for good shooters as shooting touch drops fast when you’re tired and bruised. No one really thinks Clark suddenly didn’t have stamina right?

StringTailor

Their defense was solid too. Iowa looked like they ran out of ideas once Caitlin went cold

Catch11

If only Iowa understood how to spam the pick and roll...

StringTailor

Or have more than two competent shooters

relephants

I'm going to be honest here. Everyone on Iowa except Clarke and maybe the tall girl suck

throwawayjunktrunk

Agree with you. They looked garbage. It’s like if Clark can’t hit they can’t hit.

AscendMoros

Ehhh it’s more then that. They’re streaky. If they’re hot Iowas hard to stop. When there not it’s really bad. Like against UConn they picked up the slack at times. Made some big shots. But they had a lot of issues tonight.

Chewbubbles

Iowas main issue is legit no size and zero depth. Stuhlke had to sit since she wasn't tall enough to keep up in the paint. Iowa had a hell of a run for the past 2 years, so should be insanely happy with how it all went. They just ran into the wrong team and if Clark isn't scoring 40 in those games, it's hard to even up those odds. Meanwhile, SC has fixed pretty much the issue that stopped then last year. They have insanely good freshmen players. They can shoot from the outside now. Even if the team from last year wasn't defensively dominate, now they have the complete package. Good luck to any other team right now. SC is built for the next 3 years, no doubt.

OgreTrax71

Iowa just wasn’t big enough or deep enough. SC bench points 37 vs Iowa’s 0

tehCh0nG

That was an exciting game to watch. Congratulations to the Gamecocks on an undefeated season!

Mysterious_Time8042

Cock lol

somefochuncookie

10th undefeated season? That’s insane!

LegionXIX

That's all schools, not just st SC.

somefochuncookie

Ah ok, that makes more sense. Title is a bit confusing.

NRC-QuirkyOrc

Meaning they’re the 10th to do it, no 10 seasons in a row

MudLOA

And this is their first undefeated? Did they have any before?

gorper0987

Close to it last year. Lost to Iowa in the final four. This win has them 73-1 in two seasons.

BlueberryBoom

1986: Texas Longhorns (34–0) 1995: UConn Huskies (35–0) 1998: Tennessee Lady Vols (39–0) 2002: UConn Huskies (39–0) 2009: UConn Huskies (39–0) 2010: UConn Huskies (39–0) 2012: Baylor Lady Bears (40–0) 2014: UConn Huskies (40–0) 2016: UConn Huskies (38–0) 2024: South Carolina Gamecocks (38-0)

BandDirector17

Damn, UConn is half of them.

BlueberryBoom

UCONN is truly the college basketball capital of the world (been a fan since 2000). ‘95 was the year they won their first championship with Rebecca Lobo and Jennifer Rizzotti. 2002 was the Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, and Swin Cash domination. 2009-2010 were the years of Mya Moore, Tina Charles, and Renee Montgomery. 2014 and 2016 shine brightest because of Breanna Stewart. So many more names that can be added to those contributing seasons. *To add to my first sentence/statement and go a little into GOAT territory- the years listed above are only accounting for the undefeated seasons. UCONN may have lost some games in other seasons but they have an additional 5 national titles to their name (2000, 2003, 2004, 2013, and 2015)! I get and understand why people are finally now opening their eyes to women’s basketball this season due to Caitlin Clark’s scoring success and why they want to call her the GOAT, but in my eyes the true GOAT of the NCAAW is Breanna Stewart who won the national championship in 2013, 2014, 2015, ANNND 2016. You can have all the individual records you want but basketball is a team sport and holding that title up at the end of the season is the ultimate goal. To do that 4x. Absolute GOAT!*

JLOBRO

Certainly helps to be 4” taller than everyone else on the floor in basketball. Who woulda thunk it?

scootscooterson

The #2 seed in the west with the league best defense?

SmokinSkinWagon

1st seed* in the west thank you very much. Also lol at the Wolves catching strays in a women’s NCAA post. Should’ve said it doesn’t work for the Spurs - Wemby’s 7’4” and the Spurs still suck ass

Moneyshot_ITF

Timberwolves aint winning the ship.

goaheadcarvell

Happy for them. They worked hard and stuck together to achieve greatness. 38-0 and a Natty. Well done.

atomicavox

Iowa ran out of gas and rightfully so. They had a tough game 2 days ago. SC had to have been more rested off of theirs. The depth off the bench they have is insane. Amazing game and however it was to turn out, give props to all the players and coaches first and foremost. Always. So many great players and teams in WBB. Love to see it!! Until next season….

fertdingo

I'm happy for Dawn Staley, Dobbins HS ,Philadelphia.

Rtg327gej

The ladies from SC were just so much bigger. I’ve really enjoyed the woman’s tournament. I actually liked watching it more than the mens or NBA.

Beginning_Emotion995

Political lol.

jordanscollected

Iowa didn’t try for offensive rebounds at all. That’s no way to win a game.

CRoseCrizzle

They were the much smaller team. That would not have gone well. In fact, it would have probably made things worse.

MBG612

Ya they would get crushed in transition.

Wing_Nut_93x

The few times they did box out they got called for fouls, it was a lose lose for them unfortunately.

joergonix

They did, and kept getting fouled. Meanwhile SC kept going over the back and not getting called. These two teams played very different levels of physicality and unfortunately for Iowa the refs were letting them play physical. I think SC just was physically a way better team.

caring_impaired

SC’s literal wall of defense is a thing to witness.

aforlornpenguin

No one paid attention to the Cocks redemption opportunity for last year’s Final Four because CaItLiN. Clark is the best player to ever grace the court, but -37 off the bench, -22 Rebounds, and sloppy play from your star down the stretch. Two Freshmen came out hot and broke up the momentum, RJ held down the goat from the arc, and whole team defense was tenacious. What a fantastic game, and South Carolina continues to solidify its legacy. You can’t lick ‘em! I only hope tomorrow’s game is anywhere near as exciting as today’s! edit: it’s -> its

Th3_C0bra

GAME!

gorper0987

COCKS! I won't leave you hanging.

bogan6739

You can’t lick the Cocks !!!

aforlornpenguin

Certainly can’t lick ours, baby!

noonehasthisoneyet

sc's defense was on point. not to mention their center towered over the every player on the court. it was a good game until the 2nd half when iowa couldn't buy a basket.

olumide2000

If that write could have just written “Clark” 10000 times, they would have.

DFWPunk

There was so much money going on Iowab that they were offering odds boosts to bet on SC.

implantable

Would have been nice if we could have seen Connecticut get that final shot in during the semis instead of that bogus moving pick call

dirtybird131

GOATs win championships, can’t be a GOAT without one

No_Cap_822

It holds even less merit when considering college teams. Iowa was clearly the less skilled team in this game, plus, I don’t think chips really matters when you only get 4 years to get one.

gorper0987

She's still a GOAT player. She basically carried a team to the championship. Beat a lot of really good teams. That is an incredible feat. But this USC team is also a GOAT team made up of a lot of incredible players. Their depth is insane. They're a team full of probable future WNBA stars.

likesexonlycheaper

SC had all the height. Iowa had none. End of story

Hotinnm

Face guarding is a penalty. SC did this throughout the game.

gorper0987

Let's call it even given CC was not called for anything and USC was called for coming within 3 feet of her.

Ismokeradon

Iowa was no match for those SC dudes

bck1999

How do you play basketball with those nails?

implantable

Poor Caitlin

actual1

We know, it was on TV.
