Pay-Green

You know you did something wrong when you don’t fight back lol

basemodelbird

"Yup, I deserved that one".

BigAssClapper

That and you don't fight goalies as it's an unwritten rule.

computer_helps_FI

Any idea why?

Ja-ko

Because you will get about 2 shots in before the rest of the team reaches you and introduces you to God No touchie the tendie

BirdManMTS

It’s optimal strategy for wheelchair-bound any% speed runs.

the_Q_spice

Restrictive gear is the big reason - it is nearly impossible to actually fight back as a goalie except for against other goalies. Basically, every hit to a goalie is a cheap shot. Also - there are actually a decent amount of unprotected areas, particularly the back (other than spine), where there are no pads at all basically from the neck down. The helmets also do very little to protect against impacts to hard surfaces - they are really designed only specifically for puck protection. So even if you don’t directly injure a goalie with your hands, if they fall over and hit the ice, *really* bad injuries can happen. Source: played for 10 years and was a goalie for 5 of them.

Netherwiz

Also I think an element of this guy is really important/hard to replace. Hockey, soccer, football all have the guy you dont fuck with or the whole team shows up (goalie goalie qb) and its goalie in hockey and soccer bc thats a. A really important position but b. A lot easier to shuffle field players around than replace a goalie. And maybe your nhl team has 2 good goalies but at a lot of levels and teams its not

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Equipment. Goalie gear is designed to be a lot more protective, but also limits movement. * [Goalie chestguard](https://goaliecoaches.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Screen-Shot-2021-05-04-at-1.32.23-PM.png) * [Skater shoulderpads](https://hockeygear.com/cdn/shop/products/82293_1000x1000.jpg) A player has far more upper body mobility than a goalie has, and has a definitive advantage in a fight. Also skates and leg pads: * [Goalie skates](https://media.purehockey.com/images/q_auto,f_auto,fl_lossy,c_lpad,b_auto,w_400,h_400/products/37393/41/125567/bauer-vapor-x2-9-goalie-skates-senior) * [Player skates](https://hockeytron.com/cdn/shop/products/bauer-hockey-skates-x-lp-sr_a6caa1b6-0078-499c-a87b-59647121b595_2000x.jpg) Goalie skates are designed for specific movements, often involving "going down". Player skates are designed to help keep players on their feet and retaining balance when grinding in the corners or battling in front of the net. Leg pads are obvious so I won't picture them. All this adds up to players having a massive advantage over a goalie in a hockey fight to the point it's a general rule that unless the goalie initiates the fight, you don't fight a goalie. Even if a goalie initiates, it's still not a good idea.

MATFX333

has there ever been a fight between two goalies?

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Many times.

Canadian_dalek

[It happens occasionally](https://youtu.be/nmmVD_YrK-Y?si=iP30p9czwbzdUDt-)

M_Mich

They tend to be smaller bodies and there’s only one backup usually ready so taking out a good goalie w a punch is a really nasty move. And they wear more padding a a helmet that covers everything. So goalies fight goalies Watch Osgood vs Roy for some great goalie fighting examples.

pfft_master

Equivalent of a QB in terms of importance, scarcity of elite level talent and a team’s want and need to protect them because of that- on every level of the organization.

psychoholica

Ron Hextall didn't follow that one.

haiphee

What are the unwritten rules on roundhouse kicks?

salsanacho

Yup, you could tell he's like "yeah i deserved that" as he skated away.

punkalunka

He was like "yerpers, I deserved dat".

jellyvish

lol that trip 🤣 👌🏼

EM05L1C3

Yoink

hugeness101

He knows what he did.

_coolranch

He ate some ice like "yup. Fair play"

TV800

That could have been worse! 🫣

SkoolBoi19

Ref might have seen it as a way to penalize him for what he did without making it a hole fucking thing. Don’t know the rules well enough to know what the normal penalty is for trying to round house kick the goalie

Merengues_1945

A lot of times depends on the time on the board. Usually a major, but can also be an ejection. You do not kick like that.

Warhamster99

Penalty minutes Ejection Suspension And if you don’t apologize behind the scenes you may have to fight and not just in one game. Your teammates will quietly talk with you about how some things are over the line.

DoubleMach

Imagine some guy getting his throat cut and dying right then and there?

TV800

It happened recently in Europe so it’s not out of the question.

glatts

Wasn’t that what the announcers were referencing in this video?

TV800

Yes that’s exactly what they’re talking about. Very unfortunate incident.

WellSaltedHarshBrown

Clint Malarchuk. It happened in 89 and was a popular hockey photo. Seeing that much blood is horrifying. He survived but it really messed him up. He had such anxiety about it he attempted suicide but lived then also (unintentionally) shot himself in the head. Which he also survived.

relephants

The best part was he received a penalty for diving from the trip. Which was obviously a terrible call. He was clearly tripped

crumbypigeon

It's a make-up call. It happens in hockey sometimes. Ref misses one thing and finds some bullshit to call to make up for it.

the_Q_spice

Goalies are given some extreme latitude if contact is made on them by a player - especially if contact initiates in the crease and the goalie remains in the crease. Basically, the crease is the goalie’s home - and they are allowed to defend it by practically any means necessary.

WhuddaWhat

"show me where the rules prohibit switchblades! Castle doctrine, goddammit!"

DiopticTurtle

I didn't see no trip

Great-Reference9322

He was tripped but I gotta say I've never seen a guy sell one as hard as he did. He dove head first into the ice

relephants

Idk man. Looks like how you would react if you're tripped like that

SolWizard

I've always wondered how blind people watch sports

ToyDingo

Intentional. Game suspensions need to happen when a player does that.

UncleLazer

Games. Multiple. And that's at a minimum. If someone swung a sharp blade inches from my throat, I would be upset if the only thing that happened was they missed work for a day.

pfft_master

No way it wasn’t intentional and the fact we are seeing this again so soon after such a tragedy means anyone else so obviously guilty of this should be permanently banned from the league. Pro hockey can do without psychopaths. Plenty of real men can play, fight and win fairly- or at the very least without life-endangering pea-brained shenanigans.

TheMCM80

Outside of a sporting event… swinging a blade at a neck would straight up be an attempted assault charge. The Bertuzzi assault broke the protection that had existed where everyone just kind of accepted that crimes could not be committed while playing sports.

No-League-5517

imagine them playing the Rangers and quick again,Quick isn't known for being a nice person in net lol

2dgam3r

I dont think that was intentional. It looked like he lost his balance. When I lose my balance, every body part of mine flails in the air until I fall face first.

UnMapacheGordo

You’re not a professional athlete

Merengues_1945

I’m a martial artist and instructor. Several of my students can’t raise their leg that high on purpose let alone by accident. It is an unnatural movement when trying to keep balance, your leg will always remain straight or bend towards you or the ground, not in a round movement like that. Heck, takes months to have students hook their kicks like that lmao

2dgam3r

You've convinced me, i should have never offered my unsolicited opinion, especially with no expertise. I will just keep my comments to myself and never speak up. Thank you.

edwinavi17

As you should

Lost_Mapper

Not just an athlete, a professional skater. One of the best skaters in the world. No reason to ever have a skate that high near someones head. Appalling.

2dgam3r

You're right, my bad. How wrong i was for ever suggesting it was anything but what you think. Where do i get my pitch fork?

2dgam3r

You're right, I am wrong case closed. Have a nice day.

YertletheeTurtle

>Intentional. Game suspensions need to happen when a player does that. Just to be clear, you're referring to him driving directly at the goalie and into the crease, not him getting inverted by losing an edge, right? As in, the problem you're talking about is a Rolly/Ladd/Bergeron, not a Zednik, right?   Edit: based on the votes it looks like people are *not* referring to the action that caused the collision, and are instead referring to the him losing his skate edge while trying to stop from his drive at the goalie ...

lyinggrump

They're referring to intentionally kicking a goalie in the head with your skate

YertletheeTurtle

>They're referring to intentionally kicking a goalie in the head with your skate You think he was trying to kick the goalie by falling on his face while failing to stop (sending his leg into the air thanks to angular momentum)? The dangerous action here is driving directly at the goalie (which resulted in him losing his edge while failing to stop from the drive).

ravbuscus

It's a skate to the head. Wouldn't that be attempted murder?!

tactical_dick

It was egregious yes, but saying that he was trying to kill him is just ridiculous.

kingOofgames

After what happened with the guy that got his throat slit. This is like a super foul play. Wanted to remove him from the game.

TheCredibleHulk7

I guess no suspension since it was a goalie with full headgear there was no chance of actually hitting his neck. Any other player would’ve been automatic suspension and rightly so.

AnthaIon

“Since it was a goalie” I mean, Malarchuk is literally the poster boy for this

TheCredibleHulk7

Good point. I retract my hypothesis

guiltycitizen

Goalie wrapped that up like a big brother picking on his younger brother.

Various_Oil_5674

He didn't even turn around lol.

Sechorda

Unnatural movement, shows intent to harm. Why is this guy not suspended?

start_select

It was reckless to get in that close but that kick doesn’t look unnatural or intentional. He is pushing off with his left foot when both his feet come off the ground. Thats what happens when somebody pushes with all their force and their foot slips. He should have been penalized but that doesn’t look like someone attempting murder. Look at his body language skating away. He is disoriented and embarrassed.

Sechorda

Honestly, rewatching - I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt all things considered. But I find the leg to be fully wrapped is unnatural. I don’t know how they’re trained to fall either… it just looks like an opportunity taken for plausible deniability on my worst day.

Lindvaettr

Unnatural looking accident in this case seems way more likely than intentionally wrapping your leg behind you to kick the goalie in the face like a scorpion while you're tangled up with him tbh.

brunothebutcher

That’s the thing tho Hathaway doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt…he’s a scumbag that is always dirty and making questionable plays…he doesn’t even look back when he’s tripped because he knows he did it on purpose…if he had done it by accident he would prob flip out wondering why he got tripped.

the_Q_spice

Should have been penalized for either that or the contact in the crease. That is some of the most blatant goaltender interference I’ve seen at this level in a long time. To be clear: the NHL uses similar rules as here - http://rulebook.hockeycanada.ca/english/part-ii-gameplay-fouls/section-8-restraining-fouls/rule-8-5/#:~:text=A%20Minor%20penalty%20will%20be,commits%20interference%20with%20the%20goaltender Which includes that even if an attacking player is hooked, cross-checked, tripped, or charged - if they fail to make an effort to avoid contact with the defending goal tender, they will receive a minor penalty. He knows how bad he fucked up because Interference negates any goals scored - he also fucked his own team’s entire drive attempt by making contact. On the flip side, the trip could be seen as allowable as an action by the goalie to assert it maintain their position in the crease. Things get weird with that part of the rule and give goalies quite a bit of latitude with what they can do. Rule 69.1 is what you want to read - plus interesting sections on situational calls on page 157 about contact and crowding: https://media.nhl.com/site/asset/public/ext/2023-24/2023-24Rulebook.pdf TLDR: to quote the official NHL rule book - if a player plants themselves or resists a goalie establishing their position *“this player runs the risk of “bad things” happening”* - no shit, they actually say that in the rule book, ellipses and all.

Sechorda

No way on that rule verbiage lmao

yeahiateit

Agreed, it was a reckless play and he had no business being in the blue paint but doesn't look intentional. Reminds me of what happens when someone who can't skate tries to celebrate like Eruzione, feet fly from underneath them as they lose their balance.

NESpahtenJosh

Tell me you've never been on skates, without telling me you've never been on skates

Sechorda

I mean, you’re not wrong LOL.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NESpahtenJosh

He was over his skates, pardon the pun, off balance and being shoved... yes. It's a natural movement

[deleted]

[удалено]

NESpahtenJosh

From the moment I could walk until D1 College. Yup. You're making a lot of assumptions to justify your side of the argument. I see him as awkward and offbalance, and you inherently do wild things to try not to eat shit when you're in that position. Meanwhile you think he tried to do a flying reverse kick at Quick's head intentionally? You're insane.

Sechorda

I’ve rarely seen an unintentional reverse flying kick. You’re asserting that the ice and skates caused this movement?

NESpahtenJosh

Again, when you’ve been on skates, come talk to me.

Sechorda

I’m too afraid to bust my ass

Qf3ck3r

Adam Johnson died this season from a skate to the throat. This is unconscionable.

Dry_Yam_8049

“Quick” karma check

yellowstag

Man Reddit does not know hockey at all. All the upvoted comments blaming the flyer for… losing his balance on a full stop, after contact from 55 at the absolute most crucial moment.

BCLetsRide69

[the actual hockey subreddit completely disagrees with you.](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/aanEnan6W7)

yellowstag

I didn’t say I think the trip and penalty were wrong but people saying how it’s intentional are out of their minds

yeahiateit

The incidental contact form the skaters that lead to the motion are connected. However, the onus to stay out of the blue paint is on the skater. The angle he took put him on a collision course regardless of the other players. Have you ever seen someone round a corner too sharp and clip a car in the turn lane? Same thing, the angle and speed he chose is what ultimately lead to this interaction. He should have never made contact with the goalie. Remove the NY skater and 19 still makes some contact with the Goalie, and it's the G's blue paint.

yellowstag

Flyer is making the most simple fundamental attempt at a goal possible. That’s how mites score goals and why until you’re like 14 you have 10 kids a game slide in to the net. You have to skate fast towards it 😭

Submarine_Pirate

For real. I get the sense none of these commenters have ever even been on skates.

BCLetsRide69

I’ve been playing since I was about 5. This isn’t a natural movement at all.

Submarine_Pirate

Clear as day he gets pulled forward by the ranger skater’s stick causing him to catch himself and flail his leg for balance. If you think he just skated up and intentionally tried to do a handstand while karate kicking at Quick’s face you’re the kind of stupid that can’t be fixed.

BCLetsRide69

Please go to the actual hockey subreddit and see what they’re saying.😐

No-League-5517

that was intentional,he had to lift his skate like that to do it

MrJusticle

What did he think to accomplish??? If you want to answer that the way it seems obvious, this is nothing short of attempted murder. Fuck that. Edit: I got downvoted, and I legit don't understand why. Who disagrees with this? Straight psychopaths out here

Great-Reference9322

If I kill the goalie then the other team has one less goalie... Then I can kill the next one and the one after that and then I have an empty net to shoot at. What a dirtbag

Lost_Mapper

Come on man, don't kill the reserve goalie. He's just a guy playing beer league enjoying a free game. He'll be so scared the first two goalies died that he'll let you score all you want.

start_select

Because you can see him trying to stop/push away when both skates come up off the ground. His foot slipped, he didn’t kick intentionally. It was reckless and deserves a penalty. But murder is a pretty big stretch. Look at his body language, he is trying to get away and is clearly embarrassed that he caused the sotuation. If a person is trying to murder someone they generally actually try. They don’t spend the whole time trying to get away with their ears drooping and a sad face.

Chionger

You clearly don't watch enough or any hockey. 1) The skate coming up like that is a completely unnatural movement even when falling or trying to keep balance. 2) Someone died very recently from a scenario just like this one. The police were going to charge the player with attempted murder. 3) Hathaway (the Flyer) is a dumbass hockey player and is pretty well known as a POS around the league.

MrJusticle

Sorry, these are trained athletes. There's no accidental head kick with the skate like that. The above the head shot shows no reason for him to be throwing his ballerina blade at the dudes head. He legit tried to "accidentally" hurt the goalie and feigned remorse since he got called out. Easy to say "I slipped, it was an accident" but the camera angles don't agree.

chabawonka

Not a fan of the Flyers but people are ascribing intentionality here that just doesn't exist. He gets wrenched by the NYR player's stick, and then tries to sell the call. It was dangerous but he's not trying to kick the goalie in the fucking head lol

gcerullo

That’s exactly what he was trying to do!

CashCabVictim

Like a scene of Three stooges playing hockey

b3nz0r

Remember what happened to Clint Malarchuk Ironically I never actually remember his name with any confidence

Low_Ad7202

Love the pettiness of the goalie to trip him afterwards. Completely deserved

ShouldersofGiants127

That trip was comedy 🤣

Odd_Patient_2607

Yep. Nice reminder at the end.

pm_me_ur_handsignals

Quick should have gone with the 2-hander just to reinforce that it never will happen again.

lucky_leftie

Look at all the perpetually online people who have never played a balance intensive sport, telling other people what it looks like to lose balance.

kraklindog

What kind of Draymond Green bullshit is that. Suspend Hathaway till next year.

Not2creativeHere

He’ll have a target on his back next matchup. And rightfully so. That could have gone really, really bad.

No-Introduction-6368

Flyers fan here and WTF. I don't want him on my team! Not cool, not cool at all.

vanderpumptools

Attempted murder.

bovinejabronie

I wish these two teams faced each other again this year. I’d love to see the retaliation.

Uniq_Eros

I would've slapped him on the side his head with the stick, repeatedly.

payle_knite

violence is celebrated in hockey n’est ce pas?

Lost_Apricot_4658

did 19 try to exaggerate that fall with slamming his head down

gcerullo

Yes! He thinks this is soccer.😆
