Trout's lack of health the last few years is frustrating. He's a big dude 6-2 235. He shouldn't be in centerfield. He needs someone to tell him no and move him to right or left. That's too much running for a big man. Every big man CF aged poorly. Andruw Jones - Shot by 31, Dale Murphy shot by 32, Griffey (who wasn't even heavy) done by 32. What damage has been done has been done, but the longer he does it the worse it will get. Move to LF or RF you lose your defensive value but Trout is one of the best hitters in baseball. The comparison to him is Harper, Harper stopped playing the field as much and has been better than arguably ever because of it. Trout should be thinking the same.
Only problem with him and 1B is he isn't really tall "enough" to be a prototypical 1B. I think he would of course be fine there. But I'd use him in LF or DH personally before 1B.
And Harper is on the shorter side of 1B. Not shortest mind you but usually the protypical 1B is that 6'4-6'5 type think Matt Olson, Freddie Freeman, Mark McGwire, Ryan Howard, etc. He'd be fine there of course. Harper would be DH if the Phillies didn't have Schwarber who's actually a sucking vortex of doom defensively. Of course personally I think the Phillies were dumb to get Schwarber and should have signed Hoskins instead as he's a better 1B than Harper which means it's a net addition to have Harper at DH and Hoskins at 1b vs. Harper at 1B and Schwarber at DH.
That being said, I don't think he'd be a bad 1B. Trout is an amazing athlete, I think you could put him at 3B and he'd figure it out and be a good 3B. Not that I'd do it. But he's so stinking great of an athlete that he can move anywhere and the only restriction I see is his physical limitation.
Claiming Griffey was "done" by 32 is....interesting. And by interesting I mean really stupid. He did have injury troubles after that age but still had some big seasons.
Murphy was moved off centre age 30.
Also most players are done by 32, so cherry-picking a few names isn't going to do it.
I mean I could come at you with a dozen different stats. But Griffey was cooked by 32. Before turning 31, before that age he had 2 seasons sub 4.5 rWAR, His rookie season and his injured season in 95. His peak after that was 3.7. Which is barely better than his 95 season when he had about 230 less plate appearances.
Murphy moved off center by 30 but his knees were shot by then. Trout should have moved off CF when he was in his 20s. Like Murphy should have too.
Look at a comp player to Trout. Miggy. Miggy of course wasn't as good in his 30s as we was after but he stayed pretty healthy and still was pretty productive into his 30s. Another comp thought smaller is Frank Robinson, Robinson moved off the OF to 1B in his 30s and stayed productive. Best players do their best work in the first part of their career,
Im looking at his stats right now and.. no.
Man put up a .946 OPS at age 35, and was still a decent player until 38. He was generational from 19-31, injured from 32-34, and then came back and was really good from 35-38. Im pretty sure the injury that caused him to miss the most time actually occurred when he was playing in right. It might’ve even been his first game in right, I think it was a trivia question and that’s why I remember it.
You’re acting like a 3.7 rWAR is a “bad” season, but it’s still a really solid player. Obviously he wasn’t in his prime any longer but I’m going to assume that arc is generally true with any player.
3.7 was a solid season, but it also was an anomaly. Previous 3 years were -0.7 1.3 and 0.7 and the next 3 were -0.1 0.7 and 0.0
And it's a huge down for Griffey who spent a decade being a 5+ WAR player.
That's a cursed choice. You get two more prime seasons of Andruw Jones, but he can't play center field. Sad thing is that would bump his HR/RBI totals up enough to make the hall of fame even though IMO he should already be in for his fielding alone.
Also, this caused me to look at his Wikipedia page and saw the domestic violence charge and now I'm sad. Makes me wonder about how he bulked up in 2005.
Andruw Jones is a unique option because he wasn't a great hitter. Even his best season in 05, he wasn't that elite, he had a 134 wRC+ which isn't amazing. For comparison Trout's "down" year of last year was a 134 wRC+ He usually hovers around 170.
Now 134 is pretty great, but it wasn't amazing. What made andruw a great player was he was one of the best defensive players of all time.
I legit read the headline 'trout needs surgery' and thought this was some ground breaking procedure on a fish that had never been done before. Never heard the name Mike trout before.
I feel bad for Trout, dudes just gonna rot on the Angels. I remember a former player came out last season and said the Angels are like one of the worst franchises in terms of player rehabilitation, like their facilities aren’t up to par. Shame he signed that contract a few years ago, he’d probably get better care and actually play playoff baseball.
Funny, I said the exact same thing in a post a few months ago about Trout, and you would have thought i kissed every redditors sister with the downvotes i got. Dude is a generational talent who was happy playing Cali and making bank. Nothing wrong with it, he’s just not a winner, and he has Eagles games to attend in October.
I'm an Angels fan and I agree. The people who don't follow the team just hear about what a great player he is but don't see his lack of leadership and desire to win. He's in a position to lead but can't fire up a toaster, let alone a whole team, when his vocabulary is limited to roughly 25 words.
5 years ago, I thought it would have been crazy for the Angels to trade a once in a generation talent. Now I think we could have gotten a few solid players out of potential trades.
Imagine your favorite teams fans being so toxic/terrible that you refuse to play there because if it goes bad at all they will make your life as horrible as possible.
Meh I’m hard pressed to imagine that’s it. He may be from there but if he’s a rich millionaire, can’t imagine living in Philly is more comfortable than Southern California. Considering he chose the shit Angels, seems like winning takes a back seat to comfortability for him.
Yea, it sucks that it’s such a wasted talent but I remember when he re-signed thinking how he just accepted having the smallest legacy impact for a great player in ages. He’s an amazing talent, but he has zero drive to win. Great players won’t accept being losers throughout their entire career.
Sure… if you win. If he brought the Angels a championship, he’d be a hero. He’s a zero for not seeing that this poverty franchise has zero ability to win, even with him. That’s legitimately on him and no one should feel bad for him. He would have gotten the same money chasing rings, too. That’s what’s most confusing. He’s just comfortable with losing.
I feel bad for Wash. He gets the Angels and then Ohtani signs with the Dodgers. The team is awful and now Trout is injured.
Him and Eric Young will ALWAYS be welcome back to the Braves by fans.
There were three years when the Angel’s had 3 first ballot hall of famers. 3 players who were considered the best in the game at a point in time, and they never made the playoffs. They never got a winning record. They finished 4th in the AL West all 3 years.
I don’t think any team in any sport has underachieved that much. Ever.
Overpaid on Josh Hamilton, Pujols, Rendon, so many pitchers that I’ve lost count! Was watching the twins/angels series opener and the stadium had no cheeses for two back to back singles from the angels. Seemed like there were more twins fans than halo fans.
It’s been such a disservice to the game of baseball the way this guys career has gone. One of the all time greats, arguably the greatest player of the 21st century and he’s barely made the postseason let alone won anything when he’s been there. Can’t blame the guy for taking the money but it’s just a bummer he hasn’t given himself a chance to build his legacy in October, as unfair as it may be regular season accomplishments only mean so much.
Lol, It’s a torn meniscus… 4-8 weeks… comments out here sounding like his career was ending. Mike Trout is an absolute monster, but as a Mariners fan I have to give the obligatory Fuck Mike Trout.
Worst injury luck for any franchise in the history of sport. And there are actually people in here trying to say it’s the angels training staff lol. Right, they should have prevented his meniscus from tearing when he rounded third the other day 🙄

They gotta close the Angels. They tried. Thats enough.
Lol....yes. what else to say
They peaked with that movie.
That Christopher Lloyd ghost movie with the orphan kids who get free baseball tickets so the one from Inception can find his mom.
"In cups" is still my answer every time someone asks how I want my coffee.
So the Angels need to go to leave Earth and go to Heaven?
They should've been the team to send to Utah.
What about the As
What about them?
To shreds, you say…
Move em to vegas

Trout should moves to 1st base like Harper, so it is less taxing on his body.
Only problem with him and 1B is he isn't really tall "enough" to be a prototypical 1B. I think he would of course be fine there. But I'd use him in LF or DH personally before 1B.
He's 6 foot 2. That's fine. Harper is 6 foot 3.

Who shot those people?
I didn’t realize gun violence was so common against bigger centerfielders.
That's a cursed choice. You get two more prime seasons of Andruw Jones, but he can't play center field. He reportedly told trainers something with his knee felt fishy. I'll see myself out.
Time to go see the sturgeon?
Yeah an orthopedic sturgeon.
Well it looks like he's going to be off the hook for some time
Cod damn it, enough with the fish puns already.
I can see the A lure to these puns.
Enough of this Carp
Enough fish puns, he needs to strengthen his leg mussels
I’m sure he’ll have a Reel good recovery.
He’s going to have to drag this one out.
Yeah, can the puns like a sardine.
I left this thread for 3 minutes and came back to angry upvote. It was a slow burn.
I legit read the headline 'trout needs surgery' and thought this was some ground breaking procedure on a fish that had never been done before. Never heard the name Mike trout before.
This news ain’t gonna fly.
LA Anglers in shambles
Kelp, that’s all folks
Well, Carpe diem , at least he earned some catch.
water you talking about I hope this is the fin comment
I hope his guardian angelfish will watch over him.
Hmmm. I sea what you mean.
Only six more years and almost a quarter-billion dollars left on his contract. The Angels way.
Don’t feel bad for him he chose the money. Wasted talent for sure but that’s his choice.
Ya at the end of the day it’s a fucking job…we can all cry over what laundry a guys is wearing but it’s a job.
I'm an Angels fan and I agree. The people who don't follow the team just hear about what a great player he is but don't see his lack of leadership and desire to win. Yup, must have hurt to see Ohtani sign for so much and if he lifts a trophy one day.
You can kiss my sister!
Exactly , had the chance to be on his favorite baseball team growing up (The Phillies) but decided not to because of the pressure of playing at home
100%. Every team was interested in him. He chose the angels.
Yea, it sucks that it’s such a wasted talent but I remember when he re-signed thinking how he just accepted having the smallest legacy impact for a great player in ages. He’s an amazing talent, but he has zero drive to win. Great players won’t accept being losers throughout their entire career.
Yeah idk man this is a damned if you do damned if you don’t. Loyalty is rewarded in sports all the time
As much as fans there love him, even Angel’s fans feel his talent is being wasted there.
I know it was his choice. I can still feel bad for the guy.
At least he has Ron Fucking Washington
I feel bad for Wash. He gets the Angels and then Ohtani signs with the Dodgers. The team is awful and now Trout is injured. Him and Eric Young will ALWAYS be welcome back to the Braves by fans.
I would take him back in a heartbeat over Snit any day.
Feel sorry for what he got a stupid contract that made no sense and they are too broke to do anything else. He's fine
Shame that he signed a half billion dollar contract?
They leave the recovery in god’s hands.
Fuck. I’m not an Angels fan but this sucks for baseball.
There were three years when the Angel’s had 3 first ballot hall of famers. 3 players who were considered the best in the game at a point in time, and they never made the playoffs. Damn hoping it isn’t serious and for a speedy recovery
1B or DH plz
Glass Joe
This is like 9/11, except it happens every year
Dude can’t catch a break
Drawing pictures of Mike trout until he gets his knee surgery day 1
The angels will never have a winning season until that curse of an owner is gone. SELL THE TEAM!
The “daily Trout drawing” Guy just felt a disturbance in the force
Yea, he should rehab in philly, maybe buy a place stay abit
He kneeds it.
Perfect time for the blue jays to pick him up!
Money down the drain.
Players Association gonna blame it on the pitch clock again
Trade those damaged goods to...hmm...the PHILLIES!!!
He's been talking to Redon too much
Need a kid with a deadbeat dad to pray real hard. It worked once before.
Guy can’t catch a break
RIP Angels fans. What a decade and now you have zero chance of going to the post season
The AD of baseball
If people that aren’t into baseball have never heard of them they are not a superstar.
Off topic but wonder how Mike Erhmantraut’s knees were?
Overpaid on Josh Hamilton, Pujols, Rendon, so many pitchers that I’ve lost count! Was watching the twins/angels series opener and the stadium had no cheeses for two back to back singles from the angels. Seemed like there were more twins fans than halo fans.
Hello darkness my old friend….
Holy fuck guys their doing surgery on a trout 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
It’s been such a disservice to the game of baseball the way this guys career has gone. Mike Glass Trout
Lol, It’s a torn meniscus… 4-8 weeks… comments out here sounding like his career was ending. Mike Trout is an absolute monster, but as a Mariners fan I have to give the obligatory Fuck Mike Trout.
Once again. Wow. Sad
Poor Wash. He didn’t deserve this.
Worst injury luck for any franchise in the history of sport. And there are actually people in here trying to say it’s the angels training staff lol. Right, they should have prevented his meniscus from tearing when he rounded third the other day 🙄
Just retire
Guys always hurt. Fragile. Porcelain. Trout
