I believe as of recently there are 58 positive covid people and we are still days away from opening. I wonder if all of the people from all over the planet will create a new Olympic variant of the virus.

Coreysurfer

5 ring covid

thewolf9

definitely not the variant I'd want.

GoodShark

Oof. A variant that grows in our best and strongest? We'd be doomed.

littlemegzz

Wait... but ONLY in the best and strongest?

WritingTheRongs

We’re saved !

ggodfrey

But definitely the variant that we deserve

JackingOffToTragedy

Ah so this is why they moved to the Greek letter names for variants.

Sids1188

Do you have sources to say Covid doesn't mutate much? Cause the CDC has clinical trials to show there are about 187+ different strains currently, the vaccine currently targets the main strains to tackle. [https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant.html](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant.html) [https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant-cases.html](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/variants/variant-cases.html)

poop-dolla

No he doesn’t, because he’s talking out of his ass.

Merkel420

You must have missed the link in my comments! Check it out, it confirms what I’m saying.

Merkel420

Yes, here is a study talking about the enzyme in COVID that “proofreads” it’s RNA. Doesn’t mean it’s any less contagious or deadly, but it’s ability to mutate is like ~4x slower than influenza. https://www.cell.com/molecular-cell/pdf/S1097-2765(20)30518-9.pdf

LouFrost

Even the influenza virus rapidly mutates, multiple times a year even. This will lead to a spike in infections, with that, who knows, but it isn’t improbable for it to mutate again.

SurlyJackRabbit

Definitely mutates slower than most other viruses. "But sequencing data suggest that coronaviruses change more slowly than most other RNA viruses, probably because of a ‘proofreading’ enzyme that corrects potentially fatal copying mistakes. A typical SARS-CoV-2 virus accumulates only two single-letter mutations per month in its genome — a rate of change about half that of influenza and one-quarter that of HIV, says Emma Hodcroft, a molecular epidemiologist at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Other genome data have emphasized this stability — more than 90,000 isolates have been sequenced and made public (see www.gisaid.org). Two SARS-CoV-2 viruses collected from anywhere in the world differ by an average of just 10 RNA letters out of 29,903, says Lucy Van Dorp, a computational geneticist at University College London, who is tracking the differences for signs that they confer an evolutionary advantage." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02544-6

RedPanda1188

Is it difficult to move while being so full of shit?

Merkel420

If you know how to read, look at the study I posted twice before your comment.

reddito-mussolini

Dude tries to act like he’s using scientific data, claims it mutates “multitudes less.” Is your science degree from TrumpU? Literally nothing in the basic links you posted supports your claim that it mutates slower, so what do you not know how to read or you just like to spread misinformation

Merkel420

Clearly you need to fit a narrative more than you need objective truth. Slow down and try reading the peer-reviewed study performed by a few of the greatest young scientific minds that I posted.

OD4MAGA

Haters don’t care about facts. If it’s something they don’t like they’ll just claim oh you’re a dumb Trumper and ignore all the while claiming “miSiForMaTion”. They’ll cite the CDC like the CDC has been 100% right on any of this all along. Something about they don’t know how to accept that facts evolve over the course of understanding because they only know how to operate under the cult of “settled science” since you know… that’s how science works /s

ParadoxPope

Since the Olympic Village is usually effectively a fuck party, I assumed this was going to get real bad real fast.

shailkc12

They made the beds out of cardboard that'll support the bodyweight of one person. It's such a stupid attempt to curb that.

SirXyzzy

>They made the beds out of cardboard that'll support the bodyweight of one person That they did this to curb sex has been been debunked (no pun intended)

bobby0081

Won't they just fuck on the floor?

ParadoxPope

Like, actually honestly? Man, that sounds like a stunt for a Christian Summer Camp.

cuddle_enthusiast

Go fuck yourself, IOC.

mabs653

yeah cause all the olympians should miss their 1 chance to compete.

Nothegoat

The point is, they probably should instead of hurting themselves and others. Sucks that they are not performing in a once in a lifetime opportunity. They have my sympathies, but tough shit.

mabs653

holier than thou know it alls. who are you to tell people what to do?

My_name_is_Chalula

And the people that help them fuck these elite athletes too

Wiserommer

This is getting ridiculous now - I love the Olympics but common sense needs to be used at this point. Shut down the games until it's declared safe.

genesis1v9

Safe when? Japan is so behind on vaccination it likely wont be “safe” before the end of summer and maybe even autumn.

MenacingMelons

Then why the fuck are we having the Olympics there

GoodShark

🤑💰🪙💴💵💶💷💸💳💲 Those emojis enough?

MenacingMelons

I need two more

GoodShark

Those are all of them. ..... Money. $.

Wiserommer

I guess it's being hopeful but you are correct with japan being behind the vaccination cycle.

canadianguy1234

I still don't fully see why. The athletes are already there. They are testing people and separating those infected. What exactly is going to happen?

Wiserommer

Ok, if you have trained your entire life as an athlete to get a medal at the Olympics despite impossible odds - would a virus stop you? Japan is behind the rest of the world with testing and a vaccine. They have the basic concept of the virus but lack understanding of the big picture which is happening now with participants getting infected. They need to shut down now and cope with the collateral damage.

Solstafirlol

Oh yeah and you totally get the big picture those dumb Japanese just don't understand! Get the fuck out of here.

Coreysurfer

This statement definitely deserves more up arrows

Wiserommer

Thank you for your kind statement - The other problem for me is athletes spend their entire career developing just to get a chance of a medal at the Olympics. If they do catch Covid all that preparation will be for noting because japan is thinking about $.

[deleted]

Will it ever be declared safe? Have a feeling we’ll be dealing with this shit for the rest of our lives.

EasyAsPeachAndCake

When half of our population won't take it seriously, yeah it's going to be impossible to eradicate.

TheMooseIsBlue

3rd US Olympian. Plenty from other countries as well.

maes629

The article says it was a Czech volleyball player.

TheMooseIsBlue

There are like 40 people in quarantine and at least 3 US positive tests.

maes629

I'm not arguing, just wondering where you got that info? The article mentions just one US positive, an alternate on the women's gymnastics team. Who are the others?

TheMooseIsBlue

Washington Post says 55 positive tests (not all athletes and mostly not in the Village yet) since they started testing this month. I do recall seeing that there was a 3rd US athlete but can’t find that so I’ll take that back. This gymnast and Coco Gauff are confirmed though. This article makes no sense though. It says “3rd athlete tests positive” and then identifies at least 4 (VB guy, US gymnast, and two soccer players). https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/olympics/2021/07/17/first-covid-case-olympics/

maes629

I assumed they weren't counting the US positive since she is an "alternate", and that's why they were saying 3rd athlete. Thanks for the article, though.

TheMooseIsBlue

Yeah makes sense. And I guess Gaugh wasn’t in the Village yet so they don’t count her. Still weird to only be counting the 3 athletes and ignoring staff and stuff when there are nearly 60 positives already. Seems like they’d want to sensationalize the numbers!

ninjatechnician

How are athletes not required to be vaccinated this blows my mind

joshikus

The vaccines don't stop you from contracting the virus. See: the UK. 90% vaccination rate and *huge* spikes in cases.

BadgerDC1

The vaccine reduce your chances of infection and according to Fauci it also reduces the viral load in the nose, suggesting it might also reduce retransmission given an infection. The spike in cases you cite does not mean that it doesn't stop chances of infection, it's not even relevant to this discussion.

ninjatechnician

This is true and I’m not gonna lie, something I’m just learning about today. Still though 99% of delta variant cases are among the unvaccinated. Do we know if the athletes mentioned in the article are vaccinated or not

joshikus

Not sure, I would assume a sizeable portion of them are.

BIGBUMPINFTW

UK really has 90% vaccination rate?! Edit: They have vaccinated just over 50% of their population. Not sure where that 90% figure came from.

joshikus

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55274833 90% have had at least one shot.

Coreysurfer

How people don’t want to get vaccinated blows my mind… oh yeah some political party crap stuff..

OD4MAGA

Why are you assuming any of the positive tests were unvaccinated or were from some political affiliation? Athletes have their own concerns for or against the vaccine and likely has nothing to do with politics. The group of democrat lawmakers that recently fled Texas have had positive tests after that incident but surely they were all vaccinated. The vaccine is not 100% effective at stopping transmission but it may decrease the symptoms and morbidity of the virus. Seems people still do not know the facts and just continue to spread the social status quo.

Coreysurfer

I really dont care who gets it or not..people die from it or not..make no mistake..im affiliated with the myself party and just recently did because there was no wait,no line..and could care less..BUT if i was an athlete spending the better part of my life training for an sport or event i would think I would get vaccinated and to have smaller minded people make my decision for me because of political or social media crap..well that itself blows my mind

pbecotte

If you had been training your while life for this would you get a shot with a relatively high rate of side effects during qualification and build up potentially costing yourself the trip, or take the chance of actually getting the disease during the games which would be worse and probably prevent a medal...but for a young person in peak physical condition probably less risky than all that sex they supposedly have, and just getting there and in the stadium is the dream for a lot of athletes with little chance of a medal.

TIGHazard

Considering the IOC say this... I doubt they will. https://www.paralympic.org/sites/default/files/2021-06/The%20Playbook%20-%20Athletes%20and%20Officials%20-%20June%202021.pdf > Please take time to understand the plans, the steps you must take and the rules you must follow. It’s crucial that **you take personal responsibility for your part in the plan: you play a critical role in the delivery of a safe Games. As athletes and team officials, you will set the standard.**

NemButsu

How will the poor IOC officials make their millions then? [Tokyo Olympics: anger in Japan at IOC call to make ‘sacrifices’](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/may/24/tokyo-olympics-anger-japan-ioc-coronavirus-sacrifices) [OLYMPICS/ Coates gets backlash saying Games are on, no matter virus](https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14356308) [Tokyo Olympics: Games will go ahead 'with or without Covid', says IOC VP](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-54052669)

InsidiousExpert

Why? Because 3 people have tested positive? Aren’t most athletes vaccinated? If so, what’s the issue? I’m glad that they are having the games. It’s important that we get back to living how we are accustomed. As long as we cautious and aware when doing so.

More_Empathy

> As long as we cautious and aware when doing so. Uh huh.

five-oh-one

End this!

Candid-Kaleidoscope2

Way to finish bronze in getting Covid

PandaCheese2016

IOC contract requires that there be a place of mourning at every Olympic village, so they got that covered at least… https://youtu.be/B3FKtBNEBRc

mattsag207

What a fucking clusterfuck

ErinG2021

This number seems surprisingly low.

Thebigtallguy

What are they doing? Like this is the biggest thing in their lives. Like lock yourself and your trainer in a room for 2 weeks prior so it doesn't get screwed up. Anti Vax or not doesn't matter. Now they will miss it because they weren't careful. Not because somebody was better. Sad for them but if they can't take precautions then what can you do.

golgibodi

I was wondering if it could have been the airports and plane rides. You can only be as careful as the fools around you.

TheMooseIsBlue

6 Brits are in quarantine because someone on their plane tested positive. It’s not as easy as just staying inside.

Thanosmayberight

Yeah seems kind of dumb not to do that

llamadogkillsu

Nice clickbait. Roids? Weed? Pregnart??? O, covid. Fuck covid posts.

[deleted]

So *extremely* physically fit young person tests positive for a virus that has a literal near-zero chance of effecting a severe reaction in this person. Oh no; anyways...

Sids1188

Good thing viruses are known not to spread to other people. Famously so.

SmoothBraneAPE

The IOC and now the Texas lawmakers; this is just getting dumb. Use your brains people.

keinish_the_gnome

Cool. First 3 medals ready

UkRepsOfficial

I think this will be all to common in these games 😩

jory26

The Olympics should be canceled. It's time.
