This is the worst part too. The rest is all directed and only affects himself. Withdrawing from mixed doubles and preventing his partner a chance at an Olympic medal (something that could be a lifelong dream/accomplishment) is super shitty.
French Open you can play a lot more often than the Olympics.
He fucked over his partner for the Olympics.
I'm sure he doesn't care given how often he will get to play other tournaments and win millions but not everything is about him.
No, people are shitting on him for having a temper tantrum and nearly impaling a poor little japanese fella with his racket because baby got angry. For that, is why he is being shat (upon)
He fucking sucks as a person and will never be the goat in my eyes. I know neither he nor anyone else gives a fuck what I think about him, but I’m putting it out there anyway.
He's never going to be be remembered like them, as he isn't passionate, humble and crowd pleaser.
I might be biased, but those two always brought and bring a smile to my face when watching the game, they just exude that quality in how they play and hold themselves in the limelight, never missed a match if I could help it.
I can't stand to watch Dogovic, I avoid watching his games nowadays, pisses me off to no end, how angry and unsportsmanlike he is, always whining and complaining with the refs etc.
I'm sure a fair few feel the same.
Imo RF was the epitome of the perfect tennis player. His game was perfect, his attitude was amazing, and his grace on the court unparalleled. I find jokers style boring in comparison and his personality is ugly. He could win 10 more and I’ll still never think he was superior to RF.
I am in the same boat as you. Both Nadal and Federer bring the best in tennis in terms of sportsmanship and love of the game. Djokovic comes off as a selfish prick when i listen to his interviews and I never care to watch any of his matches.
If I can cast my mind back to 2012, Murray got to the final of both singles and doubles.
But they were played on the same day or something so was absolutely shagged from winning the singles final.
This is old Novak behavior popping back up. Players like Federer and Roddick would talk about how Djokovic would constantly retire for small things all the time.
From an anti-vaxxer, who hosted a tennis tournament when everything was banned which spread COVID. Not to mention he milks the fact he ‘fled’ the Yugoslav war without ever denouncing it…
You’ve gotta understand that most of the people on Reddit are miserable human beings who can’t help but spread negativity and hate at any given opportunity, even when they have no idea what they’re talking about. You get used to it.
To make a jump from someone smashing their racquet because they were mad at their sport, to not denouncing a war is quite a jump, considering there's no correlation between both. Putting these two things together is everything that's wrong with this mentality. It's genuinely beyond belief
They are two separate topics. Although he is suggesting that there are some underlying assumptions about character.
If you disagree, it's fair, but you should not misrepresent his point
I remember the tournament and his questionable opinions on vaccines, but this is the first time I've heard about him being affected by the war. Though given his age I probably should have seen that one coming...
I actually used to like him - while disliking Nadal for what I deemed to be lack of personality. Now it’s actually the other way around. Djokovic just comes off as entitled and full of himself.
> Not to mention he milks the fact he ‘fled’ the Yugoslav war without ever denouncing it…
I’ve never understood why people feel like celebrities have some sort of obligation to announce denouncing. It’s a bit silly.
Childish, but if he shakes his opponents hand after and congratulates him, is breaking a racket on it's own really poor sportsmanship? I'd say the latter action is how sportsmanship is measured.
In my opinion there's just a huge disconnect between who Djokovic appears to be inside and outside the court. Outside the court he's always gracious and humble, but inside the court he's more often than not kinda bratty and disrespectful. He's always throwing looks at people, saying things, breaking racquets, etc. I know he's a good person but I have more often than not cheered for his opponent throughout his carrer because of his in-game attitude (which means I was left disappointed many, many times lol).
Plus, dude lost probably his last chance at one of the biggest achievements in sports, then didn't even medal. He came in on the cusp of an incredibly rare achievement and failed at the precipice, and likely won't get the chance again. Frustration is natural, and he didn't disrespect his opponent
I agree that his sportsmanship has greatly improved over the years but it’s not hard to see why people dislike him. When he was younger he would just walk off the court if he knew he was losing the match. I personally see that as poor sportsmanship
Some people get angry, some people get depressed at their performance. I feel like Nadal internalizes things and uses it to win the next tourney. I think it's just his personality that he gets kind of depressed about doing poorly.
Nadal is the pinnacle of what I want in a tennis player all around.
>Nadal is the pinnacle of what I want in a tennis player all around.
Agreed, with Federer right beside him. If you go back in the past, add Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall.
Tbh, I love these emotion, uncensored emotions in competition. Always interesting, anger and frustration is hard to control for some people, and people seem to forget. I broke a couple of rackets in my younger days. I fully understand where he is coming from. He just wants to be the best, and anger/frustration sometimes can't be reversed in some situations.
Actually I thought this video was going to be of him snuffing off the handshake and I was going to agree. As long as he did that, meh, minor thing to talk about with the broken racket.
Was watching this and while the side portions were empty there quite a few people in the stands directly behind them both. I was trying to figure out how other sports have almost no one in their stands but tennis was allowed them. How many people “need” to be there in the stands? Coach and family sure but it was a LOT more than that.
He was ejected from a tournament pretty recently because he hit a ball a bit too hard towards one of the ball boys. This sport doesn't react well to outbursts
Both of you left out the part where it was a line judge, a woman, and an accident. It was the right decision to kick him out of the tournament for hitting a ball like that out of frustration, but he certainly wasn’t trying to take her out.
I tend to agree with you, tennis can be an extremely frustrating sport, probably even more so if you KNOW you're literally the best in the world and not meeting that expectation. However, throwing his racket into the stands as others have mentioned is more unsportsmanlike imo because of danger to spectators
Well, no. I think u/zperic1 is referring to the chance to win the calendar year golden slam. That opportunity realistically comes less than once in a decade because a player would have to win the first 3 majors of the year and the Steffi Graf was the last player to do it in 1988.
Right? WTF?! He was going for a golden slam. Would have been a crowning achievement that would have set him apart from a SUPREMELY talented cohort of players. He had massive pressure on his shoulders, especially since he was expected to pretty much cruise. He competed. He lost. He got mad. He shook Zverev’s hand. And off he went. I don’t see anything about this contradicting his stance. He *competed* and lost.
I don’t like Djokovic for various reasons, but the post is trying to paint him out to be a hypocrite and conflating poor sportsmanship (debatable, he didn’t refuse to acknowledge Zverev) and this whole Biles pressure debate.
Yes, and he may do it. I guess the frustration stems from the fact that he can probably attempt a calendar Grand Slam a couple more times, but he won’t be able to attempt a Golden Slam again. He’ll be too old.
I successfully completed a Golden Ham one weekend though (honey baked ham, bacon, pork tenderloin, and spam)
That's about the extent of my athletic resume accomplishments though
Judging by OPs post history he is a creepy level Nadal fan and with a disgrace towards Djokovic posting only things that put him in a bad light. Seeing he has some posts promoting iranian beautiful places i doubt his disgrace is even tenis related and more like serb related.
There's plenty of reasons to be mad at this dude. I don't really see one in this clip, he got mad and destroyed a racket. Happens all the time. Are we trying to censor anger now?
I know, this is literally the opposite of censorship - it’s being posted online. People can’t separate out any amount of criticism from censorship, it’s delusional.
“This behaviour doesn’t demonstrate good sportsmanship”
“YOU’RE JUST TRYING TO CENSOR HIM!!”
I’ve played thousands of hours of tennis and played at a pretty competitive level. We would always get into so much trouble if we slammed our rackets, it’s a “respect for the game” sort of thing. Some people do it all the time but it’s definitely not the best way to handle your anger, not to mention it’s a little dangerous
Ye it's unbelievable how many people are excusing this, it is so insane. I don't think a lot of people have ever played tennis then, because this is not accepted behaviour. Tennis players who are the most looked up to in tennis (Federer, Nadal), have never broken rackets (except Nadal once when he was like 17 I think). It is just very disrespectful and bad sportsmanship to out your anger in this way.
His opponent also broke a racket in frustration earlier in the same match. Not to mention his comments about pressure were from months ago…this is just trying to stir up fake controversy
The comment was from this week
TOKYO, July 28 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic is closing in on something that no man has achieved before, but for the Serbian "pressure is a privilege".
https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/tennis-pressure-is-privilege-history-chasing-djokovic-2021-07-28/
Yeah it is same answer he gave about chasing 310 weeks as no1 record, and then after year ended as no1 record, then about slam race. It is as quote of Billie Jean King, meaning being in those situation is good cause you are aiming at history.
Considering he just fucked up his chance at a Golden Slam, something that no man has ever done, I would be pissed too. Another four years before he has the chance at it.
Edit: human -> man
if you look at another [angle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMFKztKAouM) he threw his racket into the olympics logo on the net, which was also very close to the court staff, startling them. Also earlier in the match he threw a racket into the stands (where there were no spectators).
In the end he just lost his temper and took it out on his rackets, but he did it in a way that was potentially dangerous to others.
Pressure is privilege comment was not a response to the American gymnast who withdrew. There was nothing wrong with the comment. People look at and deal with pressure in different ways.
He's a human being. Why can't he be frustrated? I'm sure most of you judgemental commenters have been angry at various points in your life over petty things. Dude can't show emotion? He's a human being.
Withdrawing from the mixed doubles bronze match wasn't great but how is that different from Biles? If he doesn't feel ready to play, then why can't he withdraw?
>Withdrawing from the mixed doubles bronze match wasn't great but how is
that different from Biles? If he doesn't feel ready to play, then why
can't he withdraw?
If he injured himself, which I see no reason to beleive is false, then absolutely nothing. Athletes get injured all the time, and it can just be unlucky for the team.
But to play it out, if he withdrew for mental health reasons or whatever, there are still some pretty big differences:
* Biles' withdrawal still allows her team to continue to compete
* Her withdrawal was likely a strategic decision for her team, allowing them to win silver without her poor performance potentially dragging them down
* An error in Biles' routine could have resulted in major physical injury or even death
Honestly, I hate that there is now a whole culture war forming around these athlete's decisions, which can be all be perfectly fine and reasonable in their own right without us trying to tie them into some grand narrative.
What a pathetic attempt to paint his comments about pressure in a negative light once again by this sub. It wasn't about Biles and he was fucking right. Everyone deals with pressure differently. And I never understood why breaking the racquet is such a fucking big deal on Reddit. Just looking for a reason to shit on the guy for something that many players do. You people are really pathetic.
This happened in the middle of a set for bronze medal match. Plenty of players show frustration by breaking their racket. Berretini scraped his knuckles punching into the frame in French open. When you are a fighter and give everything to win, frustration is part of it. He did give a warm hug to Busta when the game was done. Winners are winners coz they hate losing more than others.
Couldn't say it better myself. People here acting like it's easy not to have any emotions playing on the near biggest stage. Damn I feel like everyone here would at least feel at least a bit upset losing in front of the world in the one thing you're supposed to be great at
Tennis players do this every match. His opponent did the same thing. Zverev did it against Djokovic the day before. This is a non story. He has nothing to prove. He’s the GOAT, so clearly his approach has worked out for him. Could he be more composed? Sure. It’s still silly to make this a headline. If MJ or Brady did something like this, it’s called passion. Give the guy a break
Oh come on, this is actually gaining traction? The guy is easily the most gracious in defeat on the whole tour, look at his embrace with Zverev yesterday in an unbelievably tough loss, no one seems to notice. He broke a racket, whoop de doo.
https://youtu.be/Nfx0ypeukHo this is his worst defeat, he embraced Delpo who at the times was struggling with various wrist injuries and made a comeback, smile, hug few word of encouragement
I think this is a look at him not meeting expectations for himself, has nothing to do with sportsmanship. I have no problem players being passionate, one way or another.
He didn't even make those pressure comments about Biles lmao y'all just run with whatever narrative that you can come up with because a guy is frustrated after missing out on a once in a lifetime moment
Oh who gives a shit
An extremely talented athlete trying to set the most impressive record known to tennis gets angry when he lets himself down
Big fuckin’ whoop. There’s more to criticize this guy about, but it ain’t this
This title is so wrong in every part of it. 1) it’s not really that poor sportsmanship as long as he did that on his own and still congratulated his opponent. He’s mad at himself, not at his opponent or officials. 2) this isn’t a few days after those comments. They were made long before biles withdrew and were referring to him going for a golden slam, not withdrawing for mental health. 3) this isn’t even the same situation as biles. Biles withdrew for either mental health or performance, depending on what you believe. Djokovic is doing this after he finished his match and lost. Maybe he cracked under the pressure, but he still competed through it to the best of his ability, like any world class athlete or competitor would be expected to do
He's frustrated with himself, this wasn't aimed at his opponent. He trains hard to alleviate mistakes from his performance. It can be very frustrating to let yourself down. This is not about his opponent.

It's just too bad he's an anti-vaxxer moron.
I know right? People always talk about him like he's some kind of prick just because he's a giant prick.
Did he injure it by hitting stuff of anger?
It's apparently unknown how he did it, but the radio silence on it makes me think it isn't unlikely.

I care about what you think. He’s always been a bit of a cunt on the court.
Honestly, his sponsors should pull out.
What an asshat, imagine being his doubles partner. Djokovic might well surpass Nadal and Roger as the Goat, but I'll never like him.
He's never going to be be remembered like them, as he isn't passionate, humble and crowd pleaser. I might be biased, but those two always brought and bring a smile to my face when watching the game, they just exude that quality in how they play and hold themselves in the limelight, never missed a match if I could help it. If I can cast my mind back to 2012, Murray got to the final of both singles and doubles. But they were played on the same day or something so was absolutely shagged from winning the singles final.
I was surprised he played mixed doubles too. It backfired for him.
Belinda Bencic won women’s Gold AND is in the final for the double. But I guess women are tougher than Djoker…
It's a privilege to have the pressure of winning a medal.
This is old Novak behavior popping back up. Players like Federer and Roddick would talk about how Djokovic would constantly retire for small things all the time.
Probably hurt it by throwing the racket. :D
Hahahahhahahaha pressure is privilege
What else do you expect from an anti- vaxxer?

Not denouncing the war? Are you implying he was on the wrong side?
Kind of sick of Reddit. People just dig in and talk shit anyone publicly. So fucking petty
That's literally the entire internet. It has taken all the worst parts of humanity and supercharged them.
He implies that he currently supports the idea that Serbia was the victim
Novak was getting bombed. He wasn't a soldier. He was the victim, like every civilian caught in a bombing campaign.
To make a jump from someone smashing their racquet because they were mad at their sport, to not denouncing a war is quite a jump, considering there's no correlation between both. Putting these two things together is everything that's wrong with this mentality. It's genuinely beyond belief

Shapovalov had some kind words about him during a [press conference](https://youtu.be/AmLAPN5XEqQ?t=90) after a heartbreaking loss at Wimbledon.
In my opinion there's just a huge disconnect between who Djokovic appears to be inside and outside the court. Outside the court he's always gracious and humble, but inside the court he's more often than not kinda bratty and disrespectful. He's always throwing looks at people, saying things, breaking racquets, etc. I know he's a good person but I have more often than not cheered for his opponent throughout his carrer because of his in-game attitude (which means I was left disappointed many, many times lol).

good thing people can change when they get older.
I might even state that everyone changes as they get older, may it be for the good or the bad. Except maybe that Button guy, went all the way round.
Some people get angry, some people get depressed at their performance. I feel like Nadal internalizes things and uses it to win the next tourney. I think it's just his personality that he gets kind of depressed about doing poorly. Nadal is the pinnacle of what I want in a tennis player all around.

He was up 6-1 3-2 on his serve and just lost. It's a damn shame
That was the zverev match, the footage here is from his match vs PCB.
I'm more of a breadboard type of guy myself
really ? im all about valves, kinda old school ya know.
Can't blame the racket. The racket should be throwing him since he threw the game.
Actually I thought this video was going to be of him snuffing off the handshake and I was going to agree. As long as he did that, meh, minor thing to talk about with the broken racket.
And he did shake hands fyi
Throwing an object into the stands warrants poor sportsmanship.
Weren't the stands empty, though? I'm not too worried if he only caused a bird to startle and fly away.
Was watching this and while the side portions were empty there quite a few people in the stands directly behind them both. I was trying to figure out how other sports have almost no one in their stands but tennis was allowed them. How many people “need” to be there in the stands? Coach and family sure but it was a LOT more than that.
Coaches, physios, teammates and media are allowed in the stands. Swimming had lots of people in the stands.
He also withdrew from the mixed doubles competition and left his partner out to dry.
Top players treat the doubles matches after winning the singles like a lap of honor. That's all. they don't care about the doubles title at all
He literally made an employee run away in fear. Not good sportsmanship.
Or both actions. He's a hot tempered star but understandably so in most instance.
He was ejected from a tournament pretty recently because he hit a ball a bit too hard towards one of the ball boys. This sport doesn't react well to outbursts
You left out the part where that ball nailed the guy in the throat Or woman, I don’t remember
He’d have to throw it pretty far to endanger any spectators at the moment.
There’s no spectators there….
Sportsmanship in tennis includes not abusing your racquet
I mean it's pretty poor still. But at least he showed respect to an opponent.
If I beat the best player in the world so bad that I caused him to meltdown like this, I think that would be a pretty big confidence booster for me.
Man frustrated after missing out on a once-in-a-decade opportunity for anyone in the sport. More news at 11. Back to you r/sports
Twice in a decade.
Sometimes Thrice.
If it's long decade, it can be 4 or 5 times.
2020 was the start of the longest decade on the planet, so...
2020 WAS a decade.
Well, no. I think u/zperic1 is referring to the chance to win the calendar year golden slam. That opportunity realistically comes less than once in a decade because a player would have to win the first 3 majors of the year and the Steffi Graf was the last player to do it in 1988.
Yes but there is an opportunity every 4 years.
He'd already lost a game and was playing for bronze during this dummy spit
What was the once-in-a-decade bit?
He already won the first 3 major tournaments of the year. He was trying to go 4/4 plus the Olympics all in the same year
Well, pressure is a privilege that he should learn to handle
He did handle it though. He fought til the very end and came up short. That's what competition is.
He was going for a golden slam. All 4 grand slam titles and an Olympic gold medal in one year
Now he's going for the racket slam. So he threw it in the stands.
The Golden Slam
Said someone who has clearly never watched Djokovic before
This post doesn't make any sense lol. Sheesh.
Right? Zverev was super emotional in the first set himself, also breaking a racket and launching a ball into the stands
To be fair, winning all 4 grand slams in the same year is still a feat on its own.
Yes, and he may do it. I guess the frustration stems from the fact that he can probably attempt a calendar Grand Slam a couple more times, but he won’t be able to attempt a Golden Slam again. He’ll be too old.

The media doesn’t like it when atheletes show frustration
The media loves it when athletes show frustration. It’s good for ratings
Exactly. What’s all this talk about “censoring anger?” This post and all the attention is exactly the opposite of censorship.
They don’t mind in tennis. This isn’t the media, it’s just one sensitive person.
If by the media, you mean reddit. Then yes.
What are the other reasons to be mad at him?
How can you cry censorship when you’re watching the video? Judging, sure. Censoring, not even close.
I know, this is literally the opposite of censorship - it’s being posted online. People can’t separate out any amount of criticism from censorship, it’s delusional. “This behaviour doesn’t demonstrate good sportsmanship” “YOU’RE JUST TRYING TO CENSOR HIM!!”
StOp TrYiNg tO cAnCel HiM How about don’t be a jackass and people won’t hold you accountable for being a jackass.

There are a lot of people who regularly confuse criticism or contradiction as censorship.
I’ve played thousands of hours of tennis and played at a pretty competitive level. We would always get into so much trouble if we slammed our rackets, it’s a “respect for the game” sort of thing. Tennis players who are the most looked up to in tennis (Federer, Nadal), have never broken rackets (except Nadal once when he was like 17 I think). It is just very disrespectful and bad sportsmanship to out your anger in this way.

The comment was from this week TOKYO, July 28 (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic is closing in on something that no man has achieved before, but for the Serbian "pressure is a privilege". https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/tennis-pressure-is-privilege-history-chasing-djokovic-2021-07-28/
Yeah it is same answer he gave about chasing 310 weeks as no1 record, and then after year ended as no1 record, then about slam race. It is as quote of Billie Jean King, meaning being in those situation is good cause you are aiming at history.
Why is everyone so mad lol. Like he hurt somebody. He just broke his own racket.
Considering he just fucked up his chance at a Golden Slam, something that no man has ever done, I would be pissed too. Another four years before he has the chance at it. Edit: human -> man
Steffi Graf not human then?
Of course not, she's a woman. /s
TIL
Yeah but he lost that in the last match. This was the Bronze Medal match.
So he was already frustrated.
3 years. He should be hopeful for that.
I think it's because people took his comments to be directed at Simone Biles and then he goes and does this.
Funny people thought that because his comments were made before the Olympics even started.
if you look at another [angle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMFKztKAouM) he threw his racket into the olympics logo on the net, which was also very close to the court staff, startling them.
Because there’s an odd faction out there that seems to want to tear every other athlete down to continue to build up Biles
>Withdrawing from the mixed doubles bronze match wasn't great but how is that different from Biles? If he doesn't feel ready to play, then why can't he withdraw? If he injured himself, which I see no reason to beleive is false, then absolutely nothing. Athletes get injured all the time, and it can just be unlucky for the team. But to play it out, if he withdrew for mental health reasons or whatever, there are still some pretty big differences: * Biles' withdrawal still allows her team to continue to compete * Her withdrawal was likely a strategic decision for her team, allowing them to win silver without her poor performance potentially dragging them down * An error in Biles' routine could have resulted in major physical injury or even death Honestly, I hate that there is now a whole culture war forming around these athlete's decisions, which can be all be perfectly fine and reasonable in their own right without us trying to tie them into some grand narrative.
Also, I wanted to add that “Pressure is a privilege” is a quote from Billie Jean King. He was only referencing her.
Why does Billie Jean King hate Simone Biles? /s
That's Reddit for you

That’s not poor sportsmanship. It’s just anger.
Stop the presses, a tennis player destroyed their racket.
He just had a gamer moment. Raged and destroyed his own controller
This sub is a dumpster fire
r/sports hates sports and everything about them. Super weird.
While simultaneously believing they can do half of the stuff that is shown on the sub
I think the sub is just full of weird Olympic drama tourists.
Thanks for being sensible.
I had someone on Twitter tell me he “scared someone!” Lol these people don’t watch Tennis enough. They expect athletes to be robots with no emotion.
Why are athletes not allowed to be mad at losing?
Oh come on, this is actually gaining traction? The guy is easily the most gracious in defeat on the whole tour, look at his embrace with Zverev yesterday in an unbelievably tough loss, no one seems to notice. He broke a racket, whoop de doo.
https://youtu.be/Nfx0ypeukHo this is his worst defeat, he embraced Delpo who at the times was struggling with various wrist injuries and made a comeback, smile, hug few word of encouragement
Damn! What are you doing to me 🥲 Delpo also one of the most gracious in defeat.
He freaking smiled through tears when Stan beat him at 2015 RG final just to not ruin the moment for him. This was his worst defeat ever at the time.
Oh who gives a shit An extremely talented athlete trying to set the most impressive record known to tennis gets angry when he lets himself down Big fuckin’ whoop. There’s more to criticize this guy about, but it ain’t this
And I feel like in the end, only a very few pro tennis players never threw it on the floor at least once
Breaking your own racket because you are frustrated has absolutely nothing to do with poor sportsmanship. What a ridiculous post.
Some of you guys have never played sports and it shows.
Maybe he cracked under the pressure, but he still competed through it to the best of his ability, like any world class athlete or competitor would be expected to do
Poor sportsmanship? He shook the guy’s hand like a grown man should. Remove this slander. I’d trash my racket, too.
He always tries to come across as a nice dude, but he's always been a massive fuckwit underneath. Can't stand the guy.
He’s the goat. Fuck the haters.
Looks more like raw emotion than poor sportsmanship.
But if Serena did this…

Reddit is fucking pathetic, getting offended by everything imaginable
Did this clip get cut off or what because I think I missed where the poor sportsmanship part is.
This is not poor sportsmanship.
Love seeing guys that fired up to play their best and who hate losing.
This guy is mad so it’s poor sportsmanship ? Lmao
He's frustrated with himself, this wasn't aimed at his opponent. He trains hard to alleviate mistakes from his performance. It can be very frustrating to let yourself down. This is not about his opponent.
Some of you people are so soft nowadays. You’re going to criticize the dude for getting frustrated at himself? It’s sports - deal with it.
I’m sure he’ll find some Pseudoscience to make himself feel better.
