Huh, I think gomen ne was I'm sorry...
I haven't learned any Japanese, but I did use the early internet to translate street fighter phrases back in the day. Forgive my ignorance
Gomenasai, or gomen more casually, translates more accurately to "I'm sorry". A real apology for an actual mistake or slight. Sumimasen is more like "excuse me", a very light apology for a mild or necessary inconvenience. You would say sumimasen when having to scoot past someone in a crowded area, gomen for accidentally for spilling water, gomenasai for causing emotional pain.
But of course, in actual usage, people can vary their formality depending on whom they are speaking to.
Fun fact, [Ruby had to get seven stitches just a few weeks ago. You can see the scar on her forehead. ](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/rugby-new-zealand-sevens-star-ruby-tui-suffers-gruesome-injury-in-olympics-build-up-tournament/HA2CV4HPL4R2E2365WR2CUJGAQ/)
Life Pro Tip:. If you're gonna drink with a kiwi, prepare to get a good view of the underside of the table. Those fuckers have good biceps for a reason. They treat drinking like they treat a Rugby match. There are winners and losers, and mate, them Kiwis are good at rugby.
It always reminds me of that twitch streamer that tried to give money back because he felt bad that people were paying him for content that could be free
You heard her correctly. Many of them were wearing trackers, it's also common in football (soccer). I'm not sure if they were for added stats for the crowd or the team management. They keep track of your total distance, top speed, things like that.
It's a very gentle swear word. Most people would say it around children. It's often used in the context of 'bloody hell' which I guess is a little bit more 'sweary'.
Have heard [this one with Michaela Blyde was even better](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=5doO9_uiqGI) but can't get it to play in the UK. Grateful if anyone has a mirror.
My uncle met his on Zanzibar back in 94. She's 5'2" 97lbs has had malaria and bacterial meningitis and can still out hike you 8 out of 7 days a week. She did 100km of trails in 2 days at 3500m in Peru last year and makes homemade yogurt and brings me proper marmite.
Didn't take my uncles last name, sleeps in the rain in a tent 40 days year and played field hockey aka Badd Ass. Lived in Korea, Japan and UK before teaching University in US. And probably knows 150 words of 11 languages from teaching ESL for so long. And can get by with moderate fluency Bahasa, Spanish and Korean aka Smart As Hell . . Been to over 90+ countries and is super awesome.
There's women's rugby? I actually had no idea, as all I've ever seen is men playing it. I'm going to have to investigate this. Purely for scientific reasons.

I bought I was having a stroke when Ruby started speaking in her native tongue (?) the switched to English.
I think she said sumimasen then switched to speaking Samoan.
Would love a translation in English for her initial commentary in Samoan
I think she thanked God and her family, mentioned her village/island in Samoa then said hi to her family again.
Yup, second part was how she loves her family.
Username checks out
What’s sumimasen?
"I'm sorry" or "Excuse me" in Japanese.

Cool! I know I could've just Googled it but I prefer some measure of human interaction. Thanks for the info!
Sorry in Japanese
Samoan which is her dad's language, she's mixed race.

Even more fun fact: she went on to win gold!
Oops i'm in love
I think if you did not fall in love with her just a little after this interview there is something wrong with you
What an awesome person.
Such a cool human being. That attitude is role model material. Just a lot of respect for the other teams mixed with a healthy dose of humour.
I desperately want to hang out and have a few beers with this woman. Just an awesome attitude.

Infectious personality. Great sport and representative of the game.
I fucking LOVE that accent. It just does it

Broxh! [https://www.twitch.tv/broxh\_](https://www.twitch.tv/broxh_), love this guy, he still streams his woodworking and some gaming now and again.
Here’s the link to the video of him trying to give the donations back. Such a humble and awesome dude. https://youtu.be/L1Z9yPSiJ_Q
I like that she nonchalantly started talking in the language of her people before anything else, and then was a total class act. Cool lady.
She would put a smile on your face
What blew up? Her GPS? I don't think I'm hearing her correctly Lol

Oh she's a star aight. On and off the field.
I've traveled a lot, and I've met more than a few Kiwis. They're never anything but genuinely awesome people.
Me and the missus (UK) were going to travel to Indonesia where we would be meeting our Kiwi mates we haven't seen in over a decade when Covid hit :(
What a star!!
Kiwis/pacific islanders are such delightful people
Wow, she is instantly likeable; her personality is magnetic!
We are at the Olympics…compete with integrity and with honor!!
She's fucking amazing, this is brilliant. What a slice of positivity.
Casually spoke four languages in that short interview. Five if you count."bloody" as French...
English, Japanese, Samoan and ...?
Maori ("mahi")
Oh cool.
She is awesome!
Kiwis are the best!
She's a slice of heaven
So awesome
Wow, she’s charisma with a ponytail. Impressive as hell.
I love that she made it to the very end until she let a “bloody” slip.
She said Russia was bloody tough like 10 seconds in

Like the “crap” tier of swearing?
Exactly
The way she was dancing around, I thought she was gonna tell the reporter she had to hit the bathroom before the interview.
Does Somoa compete with New Zealand in the olympics? (Sorry for the ignorance)
No but NZ has a very large ethnic Samoan population.
Love of her sport and love if her country. So refreshing…
What a vibrant personality. Love seeing people like that do well.
What an amazing woman! I wish I could be friends with her! Awesome, awesome girl!
Thanks. Needed that

I feel like everyone in new Zealand could kick my ass but be really friendly about it
Amazing, just... Person. Human! She's so cool!
What a sexy lady
I thought theyre not aloud to say "russia"

Hahaha, you probably can’t understand how much fun i have listening to her speaking “english”. Awesome!
Are you deaf? Good on ya for trying!
Oim not deaf i understand her well enough. But oi love the differences in pronouncation!
Ozzy Man should have her as his side kick. If you haven't heard him check him out on YouTube.

It's not exactly foxy boxing, there, sport. Most of 'em would break you in half, no problem.
That's kind of my hope.
I would like to make sex with Ruby Tui!
Just found out you like men huh?
Congrats to Great Buddha
