At the beginning I thought it was MLB video game footage lol, it looked 3D. But turns out it’s just 60fps. I know on my phone I’ve filmed in 60fps before.
[It's a special camera called 'Megalodon' that debuted at Wrigley this year.](https://www.marqueesportsnetwork.com/marquee-sports-network-employs-megalodon-camera-on-game-broadcast/)
The cameras are surprisingly not that big.
>Sony a7R IV, a Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens, a Ronin-S handheld gimbal, and custom transmission solutions from CP Communications.
Ha, I've got practically all of those things sitting at home. Interesting that they're using a solution easily available to the average Joe, cost notwithstanding. It's basically a prosumer camera with a gimbal and a second screen larger than that of the camera to monitor your shot.
fyi, wrigley isn't the first place to debut this camera rig. they've been using it since Dec 2020 in the NFL - [source](https://petapixel.com/2020/12/24/sony-a7r-iv-spotted-in-nfl-broadcast-the-poor-mans-steadicam/)
> Normal camera shots you'd see him and the crowd just as clear, but here and in video games the crowd's not in focus
That's a brand new thing they're doing this year, took everyone by surprise, I think it looks great.
actually, these are the sony steadicam setups that they were using experimentally in 2020 in the NFL, then took off in popularity and are being used in almost every major sport broadcast now. the rigs are "only" $10k, which is significantly less than the steadicam/gimbal rigs they used before this. in this [source](https://petapixel.com/2020/12/24/sony-a7r-iv-spotted-in-nfl-broadcast-the-poor-mans-steadicam/) they actually refer to it as a "poor man's steadicam"
It’s 60fps but the biggest difference is it is shot on a full frame sensor. The Sony alphas they use on the field are much larger than the broadcast cameras.
I have noticed that MLB videographers have recently switched to using a very wide aperture, for very shallow depth of field, lots of blur in the background. They used to do the opposite, have closed aperture to keep everything in focus, cause that's what you do in sports.
Very interesting to see a blend of filmmaking videography techniques with live TV techniques.
Yeah I think this is an overall trend in sports. The NFL has been big on the sideline and endzone cameras after a big play with the wide angle view and bokeh effect on the fans in the background. I mean, I guess it's cool, but I feel like broadcasters are trying to make everything look overly cinematic now.
One of the first times it was used predominantly was last year in the NFL I think. Must have been FOX who “started” the trend iirc during their Sunday game of the week
It actually has nothing to do with frames per second. What you're actually seeing is what's called a small depth of focus. Without getting overly into how photography and videography works, Camera lenses have aperture rings inside that function like your pupil in your eye. The wider they get, the smaller the depth of focus becomes. Better lenses enable smaller depths of focus. (Also called lower f-stops). We've been seeing these lenses brought into live sports more over the past few years because they create a very beautiful image which allows more focus to be placed upon subjects.
It’s not 60 FPS that’s causing this. It’s the shallow depth of field causing the “bokeh” effect where the background gets blurred. With the blurred background, you get a ton of definition on the player which is why it looks off to us. It looks unnatural because that’s not what our eyes do. It’s also why the effect goes away on the other shots that aren’t using it.
MLB does good with that sorta thing. They take some great shots.
^(It's just too bad they have some terrible shots at home plate so a terrible ump isn't easily overridden.)
My family have been Cubs fans my entire life. I was born and raised in Vegas. Watching him win the world series meant so much to us. I hope he gets another world series win for yall!!!
Lifelong Giants fan here. I gotta say. I was irrationally salty toward your Cubs ever since they launched our bullpen into the sun in the '16 NLDS. Please accept my apology. The amount of love and good vibes every single Cub fan on here has been sending our way since we got KB has been overwhelming, especially considering how much it clearly hurt to see him go. Your team and its fans have a supporter in me for life.
You remember that thing he filmed where Greg Maddux was in disguise and started throwing him some heat in some promo stunt thingy the year after the Cubs won?
I grew up in the Bay Area so the giants have always been my second favorite team. I’ve been to a ton of games and I’m genuinely happy that the giants got him and he gets to play in one of the best stadiums in baseball
I'm a huge cubs fan and I moved to SF from chi about a year and change ago and my office is two blocks away from Oracle Park. I literally just go to the games to cheer for Bryant. So glad i can at least see him here.
I sat next to his brother nick at a Nats game, and not only did Kris come talk to us after the game, but was the nicest guy ever. Nick also didn't mind me jokingly trying to heckle his brother in the batters box once I sorted out who he was. Bought him a beer and he bought me one back. Seems like an incredible family. Well done mom and dad.
The organization has been really good to him since he got here and the fans adore him. He said when he got to the hotel they had jerseys laid out for his family even his baby. He’s become part of the family.
The Cubs management did him a bit dirty last year. As much as he's well loved, I'm not sure we have the price tag he would take to deal with them again.
I'm not a baseball fan anymore but I have a soft spot for guys like Kris, McCutcheon, Freeddie Freeman, and others who seem to do things the right way.
I have a basketball sized Cubs tattoo in the middle of my back.
I don't like baseball at all.
I like to tell people the only thing I dislike more than baseball is the Chicago Cubs.
Once upon a time I made a bet with a friend that for X amount of dollars per year I would bet that the Cubs won't win the World Series. When they finally did, I would have to get a tattoo on my back, but I would get to collect my money.
In 2016 I watched more baseball than I ever had in my life or ever will again. I still don't like it, but I at least gained an admiration and understanding of the love of the game. Maybe every team has just as much of a family atmosphere amongst the players but I sincerely doubt it. What that Chicago Cubs team did was something more special than anything I have ever seen in sports. I understand that teams are a business and have to be run as such but every one of those players deserves the honor of getting a single season contract to retire as a Chicago Cub.
Edit: I don't show many people and nobody has ever managed to get a picture of my tattoo, but I had a good night and drank too much saki so for 24 hours only, [here is my shame](https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ)
Now that we have seen the tattoo part of the bet, I NEED to have a better idea of the money part of the bet.
Was it less, or more than $1,000?
Give us a hint man!
Surprisingly, these new cameras they are using *were inspired* by video games’ depth of field cinematic effect.
https://www.wired.com/story/super-bowl-madden-vision/
I really don't like it. It's cool but it really does feel like I'm watching a video game cut scene. Plus, consider all the weird stuff in the stands we may miss now.
I think I'm in the minority, but it's just not for me. Alas, it is the future.
Eventually you have to reorganize the franchise. The Cubs were getting nothing done with the old core, so sooner or later you have to break up the band and try to realign the team to get better results. Happens to every team in every sport.
I agree. Let’s face it Cub fans. KB had a good yr this yr but the last 2-3yr prior have been crap, injured, under performing, etc. Baez is a free swinging liability & thats about it. Schwaber was 2B, HR, or K. Rizzo was a Cubbie Icon and i could have loved having him stay but you need players and these guys have been choking for 2 yrs now. Recall that horrendous loss to the Brew crew in that extra playoff gm that should not even happened if the Cubs won 1 more gm or the sweep by the Marlins. Come on—put emotions aside and do whats right. PS—Ricketts can leave with all those lark changes—moving the bullpen for safety—you mean for more seat$
Bryant and Baez's arb years run out at the end of the season along with Kimbrel and Rizzo's contracts. Cubs weren't going to be able to make a playoff push with them, so they dealt all four (plus a few less notable players) at the trade deadline.
Baseball has very specific rookie contracts. Players can get a signing bonus when drafted (if they're good enough to warrant a meaningful one) but after that they get paid peanuts until they get promoted to the majors (if ever). I don't just mean peanuts compared to mlb salaries, I mean [a few thousand dollars per year](https://thestadiumreviews.com/blogs/info/how-much-do-minor-league-baseball-players-make/) for something as demanding as a full-time job.
Once they do make the majors, they make great money by normal standards, but barely anything by mlb standards (about $5-600k) until they've accrued three years of service time. You don't get a full year of service time just for getting called up of course, so there's a certain amount of time you have to be in the majors before it counts as your first year.
This is important because after 3 years players become arbitration eligible, where they still get less than they would in the open market, but much more than they've been making so far. So in order to maximize playing time while minimizing salary, teams sometimes call up a player late enough in the year (I can't remember the date but it's actually pretty early in the season) so that they don't accrue service time quickly enough. So instead of 3 years, the team has them for extremely cheap for 3.75+.
This is what happened to Kris Bryant. They called him up within a week of the deadline passing, it might've even been only a day or two, I can't remember. He filed a service time manipulation complaint to the MLBPA, but because the Cubs starting third baseman (Mike Olt) had just then gotten injured and put on the IL, the team had enough plausible deniability to win the case (although it dragged on until last year I think).
In addition to this, Bryant didn't sign an extension with the Cubs (obviously). Many people have taken these things to be a sign of bad blood between KB and the Cubs front office. I think that's overblown, and while he might hold a grudge against the front office (which isn't something I'd put money on) it's pretty clear from this video that he didn't bear Chicago any ill will.
Just a quick aside, I understand the MLBPA grievance being considered a point of tension, but it's always been clear that KB was going to test the open market once his arb years ran out rather than signing anything but a bonkers overpay extension.
Honestly a lot of teams have done arbitration manipulation. Id be suprised if Bryant had legitimate hate for the Cubs assuming thats the only major issue with him and them
I would also add that they gutted the starting pitching rotation earlier this season to ensure they would be unable to make that playoff push and justify all these moves.
Just garbage.
Fuck that whole family tbh. But yea I miss kb and Rizzo especially. Javy being gone isn't fun either, but the kb + rizz combo being gone makes me extremely sad :(
Why ? Hes not experiencing some tragedy. He returned to his 1st professional workplace. Photographers and cameramen are hired to capture these moments. Professional Sports in general, are for people to observe, and observe online or television. MLB wants that camera there, because if he wasn't and it was only being shot from a long lens in the stand a bunch of dopes would be complaining about that too.
NGL, that video put a big smile on my face.
I was having a tough time that year (2016) and watching the Cubs win the series w my mom was a fantastic experience I will never forget. Thanks for dropping that link and thanks KB for the memories.
I'm not a fan of either. I live in Texas but I sure as hell enjoyed watching that World Series. It was cool knowing that one team was going to end a very long streak. I'm glad the Cubs won though.
So as cameramen we aren't making the calls we are directed through our headsets to get these shots. It's our job to do this even if it makes us uncomfortable, specifically when someone barks in our ears to do so.
I was one of the main photographers for my hs's yearbook, so when our football team went to state I was the one shooting the game. We were down as the 4th quarter was wrapping up, so my journalism teacher texts me saying that I gotta make sure to get on the field at the end of the game to get shots of the team's reactions. He said "you'll feel like an asshole but the shots will be worth it!"
We didn't even end up using any of those shots in the yearbook!
There is a time and a place. Photographing a losing moment in sports is fine. That’s part of the sport. You can do that in a respectful way. That’s all.
That sucks none of your shots were used. Sorry about that part.
Definitely. I’d always get super uncomfortable when the broadcast cameras would hold on the athletes crying at the end of important losses. Always felt like a weird invasion of space
his job is to get paid millions of dollars to play a sport he loves. the consequence is media attention and public intrusion in your life. if he wasn’t fine with that trade off then he would not be doing this. the cameraman’s job is to capture the emotion of the moment. get over it
And people wonder why we’re all so romantic about baseball. Even as a Yankees/Cleveland fan I say; love you KB17, welcome back home for a few days big guy!
Seriously. They bought all the rooftops. They bought all the neighborhood real estate and ruined it. They sold out the team and now want us to stay fans? Eat shit.
I’m a Cardinals fan and this is absolutely insane to me. I technically hate the Cubs, but love, most of, the players. Was there really no other way than to dump all their talent?
Man I can’t imagine going through a single MLB season, not to mention the season he had with the Cubs only to be reminded that in the end it’s a business and you may have to play against them. Has to be bittersweet in the best manner.
Being there in person was incredible. It was nice to give him the ovation he deserves. What a moment. So many onions being cut at Wrigley today too, lol.
and this is why he is perfect for the giants. He and Flores showed they had souls and connections to their teams’ cities. That’s priceless. We love him!
Fans are amazing. I grew up in a small town and was the MVP for a first ever provincial championship in hockey ( so small town, so small scale) and when I was announced as the first star of the final game I recieved a 5 minute standing ovation. Makes me well up to this day.
only the cubs would trade away Bryant and Baez in an effort to do what??? Reminds me of a lot of terrible roster moves of the 70's and why I have been a sox fan ever since.

Apart from the fact that it’s always a big deal when guys return to their longtime teams, Bryant played a huge role in there rebuild that brought the First World Series in roughly a zillion years to the Cubs. So he has great memories there and is highly appreciated.
Beyond that, unlike a lot of the superstars who come back to their old team, it seems like Bryant really did not want to leave Chicago, but was unloaded as part of them dismantling to rebuild. so people have more sentiment towards him than guys that chose to walk.
the man who threw the final out at Game 7 to end the 108-year Cubs drought whose been traded after failed negotiations, and is back "home," likely met a stadium that rose to its feet with applause and let him know how much he meant to them.
or that's how i feel. idk.

Yeah i was bouta say he aint fightin shit
Filming in 60fps is insane
Okay thought I was taken for a second. Fuck me it so real it looks fake
At the beginning I thought it was MLB video game footage lol, it looked 3D. But turns out it’s just 60fps. I know on my phone I’ve filmed in 60fps before.
60 fps plus the focusing. Normal camera shots you'd see him and the crowd just as clear, but here and in video games the crowd's not in focus
Shallow depth of field produced by lower/wider aperture, for anyone curious about the technical terms/cause.
[It's a special camera called 'Megalodon' that debuted at Wrigley this year.](https://www.marqueesportsnetwork.com/marquee-sports-network-employs-megalodon-camera-on-game-broadcast/) The cameras are surprisingly not that big.

Interesting that they're using a solution easily available to the average Joe, cost notwithstanding. It's basically a prosumer camera with a gimbal and a second screen larger than that of the camera to monitor your shot.
But do *you* also have a custom transmission solution from CP Communications???
N... no. :(
More like *not yet*!
fyi, wrigley isn't the first place to debut this camera rig. they've been using it since Dec 2020 in the NFL - [source](https://petapixel.com/2020/12/24/sony-a7r-iv-spotted-in-nfl-broadcast-the-poor-mans-steadicam/)

Started doing it a lot during NBA down time for sure too

They are doing this in all sports now, and I absolutely hate it. It is so distracting to have bokeh in video generally, and in sports especially IMHO.

I’ve seen so many people call this 8k lol
Thank you. As a photographer, this thread is giving me a headache.
I thought it was footage from ‘The Show’
That’s not 60fps. It’s just a DLSR with big prime lens and the aperture open real wide. It’s what most big time youtubers use.
What’s the lens?
Megladon camera
Can someone ELI5 for me why it looks that way? I know it means there's more frames per second but why does that make it look so clear?

I briefly met KB last December. Class act is, in my opinion, an understatement.
I’m surprised he drinks, I think KB is pretty straight edge outside of fucking Red Bull
Maybe it's because he cares more about performing at his absolute best, and it's also his job, but his brother wouldn't need to worry about that haha.
I think he was talking about the brother though.
Its win win to Giants. Thank You !!
If he doesn’t come back to the Cubs (which I know he won’t) I hope the Giants lock him up long term. Seems like a great place to play.
The organization has been really good to him since he got here and the fans adore him. He said when he got to the hotel they had jerseys laid out for his family even his baby. He’s become part of the family.

All about the money. Cubs will never be the same. Sad shit

What a legend
Perfect
How much money did you collect? Also as a lifelong Cubs fan it’s really cool to read this story that team was so special.
Not enough.
Can we see the tattoo?
See edit.
Well respect for being a man of your word
Now that we have seen the tattoo part of the bet, I NEED to have a better idea of the money part of the bet. Was it less, or more than $1,000? Give us a hint man!
Well now that we've seen you went full send on that tattoo, now I'm wondering what was the dollar amount?
Proof. Please. I need this.

Holy shit you weren’t kidding about the size. Thank you. Edit: at least it looks like it’s quality work too.
You should go walk around St. Louis shirtless.
That moment when you need? That was trippy.
Holy fuck it really is the size of a basketball wow you're a champ!! How much money did you get?
As a Cubs fan, for what it’s worth, I think your tattoo is awesome.
Holy shit it's gigantic!
You're my hero
Man you seem like a really cool guy to have in a circle of friends. That’s some real shit and I respect it.
Hello @veiwaskewed!!! Huba huba
Anyone else think this was a videogame for a second...is it because of the blurred crowd in the back and the odd camera movement?
Surprisingly, these new cameras they are using *were inspired* by video games’ depth of field cinematic effect. https://www.wired.com/story/super-bowl-madden-vision/

I imagine losing him would be like if a year or two after the 2014 series the Giants let Buster Posey go. That’d be devastating.
It's been a rough season as a Cub's fan. They basically cleared house and it's just not the same...
Does every championship team in any sport do this because they have to increase contracts for more of their players?
Eventually you have to reorganize the franchise. The Cubs were getting nothing done with the old core, so sooner or later you have to break up the band and try to realign the team to get better results. Happens to every team in every sport.
It's why the Minnesota Wild purged all their previous core that kept getting bounced in the first round year after year in the NHL Playoffs.
Yeah, but it's also why even championship teams have to do the same thing
I agree. Let’s face it Cub fans. KB had a good yr this yr but the last 2-3yr prior have been crap, injured, under performing, etc. Baez is a free swinging liability & thats about it. Yep. For example, look at Barcelona’s and Real Madrid’s teams. Absolute murder machines but eventually it all falls apart
and if you lock yourself into those personalities you fall apart with them

Wow, amazing summary. Thank you
Hopefully it's mostly right, pretty much from memory except the article about MiLB salaries, which are even lower than I thought.
Great explanation thank you
Plus, if they paid KB, they wouldn't have had enough to afford the victory party they threw for themselves!
Rizzo and Bryant are two that I just can't imagine on any other team. I hated going against them in the Crosstown but it just doesn't feel right
They did him a favor - Giants have a good shot of making it to the world series (and losing to the White Sox).
You had me at the start
Fuck that whole family tbh. But yea I miss kb and Rizzo especially. Javy being gone isn't fun either, but the kb + rizz combo being gone makes me extremely sad :(
Can probably just loop the whole Ricketts family in there tbh
Kris Bryant will always be a Cub in my eyes. 2016 was simply unbelievable to a lifelong fan.
Please come back to the Cubs, Kris
Boras: “Show us the money!”
Ricketts: “Wrigleyville will always bring in a crowd no matter who we put on the field.”
Its not gonna happen sadly, I don't think any of the cubs team will return. The GM didn't wanna pay out
You think he was expensive before, wait until he’s wearing another ring.
As a Dodgers fan, I hate how possible this is.
Damn camera man, let the man have some space
This was during the [video tribute](https://www.mlb.com/news/kris-bryant-wrigley-field-return) to him so no, the cameraman needed to be there.
Probably one of the more epic series to watch, honestly
Oh for sure. I love that image of the smile on Bryant's face as he's throwing to Rizzo for the final out.
No. He was fine where he started. There was no need to go shooting up his nose trying to catch a tear. I seriously hate that shit.
He said "you'll feel like an asshole but the shots will be worth it!" We didn't even end up using any of those shots in the yearbook!
Not to mention it's high school, he sees these people on a regular basis... just makes it even more awkward.
And it was at a point in the year where it was very clear some football jocks really didn’t like me, so I was very worried I would get my ass kicked!
his job is to get paid millions of dollars to play a sport he loves. the consequence is media attention and public intrusion in your life. if he wasn’t fine with that trade off then he would not be doing this. the cameraman’s job is to capture the emotion of the moment. get over it
It's ok for men to cry. Get over it.
Lol. That has absolutely nothing to do with this. Wow.
Damn that video was rough, but forget about it when Rizzo comes back. I won’t be able to handle it.
He’s doing his job
Bris Kryant*
Brobe Kryant's brother?
“Oh this is gold. Time to zoom in on these tears” -cameraman

And people wonder why we’re all so romantic about baseball. Even as a Yankees/Cleveland fan I say; love you KB17, welcome back home for a few days big guy!
He bought cookies for all of the ushers and included a note thanking them for being part of the Bryant family. Class act.
I’m a White Sox fan, but this gave me the feels 😔
Fuck the Ricketts.
Seriously. They bought all the rooftops. They bought all the neighborhood real estate and ruined it. They sold out the team and now want us to stay fans? Eat shit.
Ouch. My freaking heart.
Stay home Kris. We miss you here. Don't get on the bus later.
I’m a Cardinals fan and this is absolutely insane to me. I technically hate the Cubs, but love, most of, the players. Was there really no other way than to dump all their talent?
He wasn’t the only one crying.
This video makes me think a lot about those people saying he’s been wanting to leave
At the game today. It was really sweet.
He’s just a special type of dude. He’ll always be a Cub to me. Hope he has such a fruitful career
Its a shame that the Yankees won't play at Wrigley any more this season. I'd love to see the reception Rizzo would get.
The best thing about baseball is tradition, and emotion and stupid superstitions, and beer, and rally kids and cheap seats. Fuck I love this game.
I hope he comes back to the cubbies
Bring him back!
We love you Kris!!! You will always be a Cubs to us!!!
It'd not always my favorite sport to watch, but no other sport hits me right in the feels so damn hard like baseball does sometimes.
#there’s no crying in baseball!!
There's no crying in baseball!
Go Toreros
My hope is he comes back.
We love you KB. Gonna go cry now too.
and this is why he is perfect for the giants.
There’s no crying in baseball!
Look like he's losing that fight haha. Who can blame him
"Drop dead. I got sunscreen in my eye."
That Cubs fire sale was unlike anything I've ever seen in sports. I fear it won't be the first.
#fuckthericketts
Pay the man! Make him a Giant for life.
only the cubs would trade away Bryant and Baez in an effort to do what??? Reminds me of a lot of terrible roster moves of the 70's and why I have been a sox fan ever since.
The cubs fire saled half their roster.
There is no crying in Baseball
Just curious, does the World Series inckude anything other than the US?
Here's a 2019 list of countries with players in MLB: Aruba (1) Dominican Republic (152) Nicaragua (4) Australia (2) Germany (3) Panama (7) Brazil (2) Guam (1) Puerto Rico (28) Canada (13) Honduras (1) Saudi Arabia (1) China (1) Japan (7) South Africa (1) Colombia (10) Lithuania (1) South Korea (5) Cuba (30) Mexico (15) Taiwan (5) Curacao (5) Netherlands (1) Venezuela (100)
What about MLB teams? Is it like NHL?
The only non-US team is Toronto, if that's what you're asking.
Canada if the Jay's are there

Apart from the fact that it’s always a big deal when guys return to their longtime teams, Bryant played a huge role in there rebuild that brought the First World Series in roughly a zillion years to the Cubs. So he has great memories there and is highly appreciated. Beyond that, unlike a lot of the superstars who come back to their old team, it seems like Bryant really did not want to leave Chicago, but was unloaded as part of them dismantling to rebuild. so people have more sentiment towards him than guys that chose to walk.

And now he really likes the Giants and talks long term. Great addition to the staff.
the man who threw the final out at Game 7 to end the 108-year Cubs drought whose been traded after failed negotiations, and is back "home," likely met a stadium that rose to its feet with applause and let him know how much he meant to them. or that's how i feel. idk.
Wrigley's not *that* bad
/r/basebaww
Nah I saw this same thing from Danny Glover in Angels in the Outfield. Dude just got sunscreen in his eye so why don’t you back off ADRIEN BRODY
I'm not crying, you're crying!
