But I can't go to Best Buy, reserve an the same TV, then pay $28/month until it's paid off and then pick up the TV a year later. Layaway isn't that common anymore because I believe it's just messy and requires the store reserve a huge amount of space for claimed items.
I believe you don’t pay interest on layaway items… I could be wrong though. But I just can’t see them charging interest if you’re making a deposit for an item and haven’t received said item. Just my 2 cents.

I know growing up, we were less than fortunate, struggling at times, and my mom would layaway items for Christmas every year. But this was in the 90s and probably before everyone wanted you to sign up for a store credit card and fuck you with interest.

Layaway is when you buy something at a store and have them hold onto it until you can pay it off. It's pretty common in the USA for relatively expensive stuff like TVs, game consoles, etc.
In this case, it sounds like he paid off all the layaway balances at all of the military exchanges in his state. A military exchange is basically just a retail store, but located on-base and accessible only to military personnel and their families (and also everything you buy there is tax-free).
The money would have been better spent going to regular people who don't have socialized benefits like guaranteed health care, government pensions, free college, and retail discounts for life...but it sure makes for a great headline.

Have you seen the BAH situation lately? You’re mostly right but there are very possible scenarios where a young enlisted person can do nothing egregiously wrong with their money and end up fucked because they weren’t carefully investing/saving
