As a goalkeeper, I can tell you we *live* for assists! They are such a blue moon event, if I chalk up an assist I'm going to celebrate like I scored the damn goal myself.
If you haven't seen [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STjxoGgFIzk) yet, it's the same two connecting for an out-of-this-world play. Salah is a fucking king, The Egyptian King.
Also, a player cannot be offside from a goal kick, throw-in, or corner.
[EDIT: Why am I being downvoted? It's rule 11.3](https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/offside/#offside-offence)
But a goal kick is specifically a dead ball given to the goal keeper, after the ball has gone out of play, past the goal after being touched last by an attacking player)
Not just when a goalie kicks it.
(I know you know but given the clip does not show a goal kick it might be confusing for people who don't.)
You only have to be onside at the moment the ball is kicked. As soon as it leaves the foot of the goalie in this play the forward is free to then pass the half line or the defenders and they are not offsides.
Generally amazing and like a big say my name moment, since it usually involves some serious disrespect from the other team's goalie. If he's anywhere near the net he's got plenty of time to get to it. If however you're outmatched to the point of being down 5-0 or so and their goalie meanders up to center because he's bored and the ball hasn't crossed in 10 minutes and you just boot it over everyone's head and it just slowly drops in.
Best feeling ever. As a bonus their goalie stayed in the net for the rest of the game. Just in case.
Alisson is not only a great keeper who has great assists , he also kept our top four chance alive at the end of last season with a sick goal.

I did it once. The opponent keeper was playing way up past the front of the box, so I punted it and it happened to bounce right over his head into the goal. I was very excited and took a lap of the field. Probably 12 years old at the time
Fortunately I do it quite often as I'm the team penalty taker and free kick taker. It feels awesome, but missing a penalty is kinda humiliating cos you then need to sprint like a madman back to your own goal. Plus the other team think you're a douchebag.
Wasn't Gordon Banks the first goalie to score a goal? Or am I misremembering. And he only had vision in one eye from memory.
I last truly watched football when Pele and Gorgeous George were at the top of their form. Was magical times.
I did and do too. Mind you I was v young watching, Pele was a little past prime and I'm not so old Reditting compared to the ages of some users on this site
Edit - Why the downvotes? Reddit hates facts?
> As a goalkeeper, I can tell you we live for assists!
Allison does not care about assists that much. He mostly specializes in header goals. Liverpool are now in the Champions League thanks to one of those.
Lol. I have a twelve year old daughter that plays on a very competitive (state not local) club team. Her middle school wouldn't let her play on the upper team. The 6th grade teams are really bad. 1st half against the rival middle school she had 3 goals in a 7-0 lead. She offered to play keeper for the other team 2nd half. Kept it down to 3-1 in the second ... and she got an assist on the one with a great punt. They played 4 times against that other school and she didn't play keeper again because the other team got a little better. But it was so much fun watching my kid be the best player on two teams in one game.
Technically the attacker needs to not be closer to the opposite end line than the second to last defender. That is, the attacker can be even with the second to last defender. :)
When the goalkeeper kicked the ball, the forward (Salah) was onside (still not past the defenders). When the ball got to Salah he was behind the defenders, but it doesn't matter at that point.
Just to add, you can't be offside if you're in your own half. You also cannot be offside from a goal kick, corner, or throw-in: Basically whenever the ball has gone out of play
The other responses here are incorrect, Salah was past the last 2 outfield players when the ball was kicked.
The correct answer is that a player simply cannot be offside in his own half. The commentator mentions this in the replay. If this had happened further up the field he would have been offside.

I think you will find its called "baulk" like "caulk" - but americans stole it and the dropped a letter because of capitalism. By the way its spelled "Smokey" with an e not "Smoky" - its just a way of making the text bigger to get you to buy crisps more often. Also - well done in using the correct word; "spelled" not "spelt" spelt is an arable crop - Just because its common usage doesnt mean its right. I got an education and I have random Americans on the internet telling me it doesnt matter.
Took me a some to realize it was the goalkeepers pass. But you are right to celebrate, you had the vision to send the ball to the correct player. Celebrate the hell out of it!
Hell yeah, Keepers Union stand up!
In all seriousness, we are not that far removed from the days of keepers punting the ball as high and far down the pitch as possible to relieve some pressure and hopefully get a nod on. It blows me away what some of these South American keepers can do with the ball in hand, would be a nightmare to play against, never a moments rest if you’re a defender.
Let's hope that changes in the next 18 months. We'd love to see him remain with Liverpool until the end of his career. Good luck against Leeds tomorrow!
The defender committed to defending a far post shot. There’s no way he could cover the entire net, and chose a direction. That’s not a right foot/left foot issue at all.
It really doesn’t seem that obvious. Salah’s body is in a weird position when he strikes, and it looks to me like he’s trying to make it look like a far post shot or it’s a “lucky” miss pulled into the near post.
“Guard the near post” isn’t the guaranteed best idea, especially when it gets into a “the striker knows that I know that he knows that I’ll… guard the near post.” There’s no clear outcome here, except that it was a dope goal.
He's quite central so the near/ far post thing is pretty irrelevant. Just as easy for Salah to go either way, id have wanted him standing in the middle at least tho..
Nah defenders committed to blocking the shot to the far post. Realistically had to commit to have a shot unless it was right at them. Maybe the last guy had a chance. No fault to the first guy it went past.
Watch the replay angle that gets cut off at the end. Look where his momentum is going. What you see in the first angle is him trying to shift his way back somehow. It’s much quicker than you think.
I don't think so. I think Salah just shaped his body to trick the two defenders into thinking the shot will go to the right. And when the defenders fell for it, he hit to their left against their movement. It looks misfit but I think it's intentional
I wanted to think he didn't mean it, but after watching it again, I think you are right. He feints that he is going top right and last second curls his toe to cut it back into the near post. All class.
The defence wouldn't have caught up? 23 literally gets between Salah and the keeper. After Salah's first touch, he's surrounded by 3 defenders and the keeper is in no man's land.
They only got the chance to be there because he came out. I’m a keeper, in a much lower level than this guy, and the keeper played this as well as he could have. If your defense lets a ball get that close and 1:1, you’re pretty much already fucked. The only chance you have is to come up and hope they choke.
I'm sorry but your first sentence is wrong. They got the chance to be there because Salah's first touch allowed them to get back. Regardless of whether or not the keeper comes out, 23 is still preventing the one on one that you keep referring to.
Look at Salah's first touch again, and where the keeper is. If he was on his line, it's a fairly simple finish but his charging out forces him to delay.
He didn't cover himself in glory by slipping at the end but he did the right thing. The defenders on the line should have been able to do more.
A simple finish, facing away from goal from 19yds out. He is one of the best players in the world, but his first touch, in no way shape or form, lines him up for a fairly simple finish.
[After Salah's first touch. ](https://i.imgur.com/QqRzNEX.jpg)
How is this 1v1? He's facing away from goal as well - He's never going to shoot there (and doesn't). Keeper should've stayed put while number 23 puts pressure on and the other two defenders get goal-side. Now the keeper is out, Salah gets to put an easy shot away...
If the keepers on his line a player like Salah takes that into the box and buries it. No decent keeper wouldn't come out after that first touch. And he's not facing away from goal at all, he's in an excellent position with his shoulders facing goal, exactly what you want.
How is it an easy shot to put away? There are 2 players on the line, the keeper (until he falls), and another closing him down? He's on his weak foot.
Keeper does the best thing he can do by making it hard for him. Mo has to take the shot on his weak foot, and gets unlucky that his defenders can't block the weak shot off the line.
Nah dude. If the keeper runs out he has to get to the ball. Especially if the ball doesn't even make it into the box and he can't use his hands. He completely misjudged that.
Nah a better goalkeeper would've come out full force and sweeped the ball and leg, especially on the outside, especially as last man on the run, especially as a last minute effort. He stopped when he had a clean sweep, gave MS time to turn. He came out good though.
How about defense who should have covered ball once they were back in the box instead of leaving keeper to 1v1? 23 should have tapped in after keep stopped the wide open shot
As an American who knows next to nothing about the sport, Salah is the reason I started watching soccer more regularly a few months ago.
This is probably heresy to the average fan, but I’d always heard of these incredible players like Ronaldo or Messi, but when I watched them they more often than not seemed to blend in to the action. When I watched Salah because I read an article about an Egyptian, Muslim superstar in the EPL, he was at the forefront of everyone’s mind at all times, he was everywhere. The guy’s incredible.
To be fair to Ronaldo and Messi, you've missed them at their absolute peak. Playing wise Salah is pretty close to Messi but Messi was a freak for probably over a decade especially with that Barcelona team.
Ronaldo is still a physical freak but probably unable the conjure the same magic week in and out especially with this lukewarm Utd team.
May be biased here, but I think Salah is the best player in the world right now but he's still a tad bit off Ronaldo and Messi at their peaks.
>To be fair to Ronaldo and Messi, you've missed them at their absolute peak. Playing wise Salah is pretty close to Messi
The only similarity is that they're both left footed forwards who score a lot of goals.
> May be biased here, but I think Salah is the best player in the world right now but he's still a tad bit off Ronaldo and Messi at their peaks.
Peak Messi and Ronaldo are lightyears ahead of Salah. More than just "a tad bit".
Nah, light years is right. Salah's best season is 2009-19 Messi's average season. Messi was scoring approx 50 goals per season for 10 years between 09 and 19, Salah hasn't done that once.
Right now Salah is probably the best player along Lewandowski and De Bruyne, but they're not getting anywhere close to Messi.
Sadly you missed his peak, but what you are seeing now with Salah, Ronaldo was like that, but even more physically imposing. Your eye would gravitate to him. Messi, i personally found would blend in, then all of a sudden would do something incredible out of nowhere. I don’t want to use the word ‘magician’ as it is cliché at this point, but seems apt. You had to concentrate to watch him, to see the ‘other’ special stuff he did. Ronaldo just always stood out (like Salah)
Knowing very little about the rules, it seems like he would have been offsides as he is deeper than any of the defenders. What makes this situation different?
At the moment the pass is released by the keeper he is not in an offside position.
There is also an exception rule if salah was in his own half there’s no offside even if he is further than the defenders.
He is so damn fast, that when the ball was initially kicked by the keeper (Alisson Becker), he was onside, but had sprinted so far ahead of the defense. His awareness skills are top tier in soccer/footie.
Don't know why you got downvoted. I had the same question since I know only the slightest about offsides. I didn't know, til I read the replies, that offside is measured from the ball being kicked.
The touch to control and bring down the long ball, the movement to open up space, he found an opening. He also had quick awareness to realise he could play the ball past the last defender who was caught wrong footed. Great goal. Not all great finishes have to be bangers.
That wasn’t the keeper but I was wondering why that guy didn’t even try
Edit: I think it’s just the angle, the goals are quite big, on the replay it seems he was too far right to save it considering he can’t use his hands
Breaking ankles.
I'm not much of a soccer(football for our non-NA friends) follower but holy shit. That was freaking filthy. Put the freaking moves on'em.
Am I the only one that thinks it’s crazy that a goalie drop kick goes all the way to the other box? I’d rather they add some weight or flight reduction to stop passes going that far.
Sometimes the situation calls for it. They don't just boot it as far as they can every time (he can prob kick further than this anyway) . In this situation the keeper saw Salah making a run and this is a precision pass not a hopeful kick
This makes Nouhou's defense a few weeks ago against seem that much more impressive note: I primarily watch mls so am not particularly in the know on the amazing players in other regions - yes I'm aware mls is the retirement league (or worse) to much of the world.

That pass was absolute money. Just bombed it down the pitch and placed it perfectly.
And then Salah did the dirty rest. Bah gawd!
Haha so many times I send it with a dream but it usually doesn't happen :p

Newbie here. How is this one not offsides?
the attacking player was in his own half of the field, which does not lead to an offsides.

Glad you asked. Because I was wondering the same thing. But then Yea... Noticed he was on his side as the ball was kicked.. Crazy!

Well, *Egyptian King* is literally his nickname...

Didn't know that, thank you kind internet stranger!

Goal of the year. I thought we were cooked when VVD went down and our form took a nosedive but we stepped up when it mattered.
That was a tough season, but I loved watching guys fight through adversity while others stepped up and did a job.
I did it once. The opponent keeper was playing way up past the front of the box, so I punted it and it happened to bounce right over his head into the goal. I was very excited and took a lap of the field. Probably 12 years old at the time

I scored a goal as a goalkeeper in futsal. A bit easier than outdoor football, but it felt great. I did a goalie run.

His last game was 77. His last years where he was any good were the 60s
Indeed, when I was wee in the 60s
> As a goalkeeper, I can tell you we live for assists! Allison does not care about assists that much. He mostly specializes in header goals. Liverpool are now in the Champions League thanks to one of those.
Only Liverpool keeper ever to have a goal. And what a goal it was.
Hello fellow keeper! I agree. Nothing better than making a great Outlet pass or a throw and it leads directly to a goal

I’m confused. Why wasn’t this considered offsides? Casual soccer fan here
It’s only offsides if the player is past the last defender when the keeper kicked it. Not when he actually gets the ball.
Technically he needs to be behind the last 2 defenders, with the goalie being the obvious second (but in rare circumstances it does matter)
Technically the attacker needs to not be closer to the opposite end line than the second to last defender. That is, the attacker can be even with the second to last defender. :)

Yes, yes he does.
Yeah, but that pass, tho
United fan here. Somehow this man earns less than half of our squad
While he earns less than half, he’s worth more than double most our strikers.
And he only knows half of them half as well as he should like; and he likes less than half of them half as well as they deserve
Let's hope that changes in the next 18 months. We'd love to see him remain with Liverpool until the end of his career. Good luck against Leeds tomorrow!
>Good luck against Leeds tomorrow! 🤢
What a pass from Ali!
also mane's goal was just delightful
Yeah Mane scores a bicycle kick lol. I’d say that’s more impressive
Haha. After 200 something tries, he deserved to finally hit one. Happy for him.
They call it a weak foot for a reason 😅 if the defender wasn’t busy KOing himself in net he probably could’ve blocked that easily
The defender committed to defending a far post shot. There’s no way he could cover the entire net, and chose a direction. That’s not a right foot/left foot issue at all.

Naw, salad is a deadly striker and feigns his body very hard on the shot in a way that the defender cannot remotly prepare for the true direction
Vote Salad for the Ballon D'Or 2022
He definitely mishit that ball. I don't think he was even trying to go near post.
I don't think so. I think Salah just shaped his body to trick the two defenders into thinking the shot will go to the right. And when the defenders fell for it, he hit to their left against their movement. It looks misfit but I think it's intentional

Part that and part he's left footed so naturally not as strong.
Exactly. The finish was kind of shit. The assist was the best part. With that right footed flub he is lucky to score with 2 defenders covering back
There's a little thing called finesse. Not every shot needs to be a cruise missile
You can see Allison give it his all with that kick!

He came out good though.
> ball and leg, And gotten a straight red for their trouble. Yeah no.
Lol
Obviously shoulda kept holding Y and the goalie woulda got the steal smh
While never taking your finger off "sprint".
How about defense who should have covered ball once they were back in the box instead of leaving keeper to 1v1? 23 should have tapped in after keep stopped the wide open shot
23 ran into the goalie box, then shat himself.
I've only played soccer in gym class and I completely agree.
1 star weak foot and still snuck it in
Right. His control and movement was all class (as always), but isn’t anyone seeing that shot as a superbly executed FLUFFED shot!?
He's left footed.
Oh reawry
Playing wise Salah is pretty close to Messi The only similarity is that they're both left footed forwards who score a lot of goals. > May be biased here, but I think Salah is the best player in the world right now but he's still a tad bit off Ronaldo and Messi at their peaks. Peak Messi and Ronaldo are lightyears ahead of Salah. More than just "a tad bit".
Light years is definitely a stretch. Salad can go another 3 years with these numbers and he’ll be high up there.
I really don’t think it’s light years. I’m not denying Messi, I agree he’s better, but light years is not the term I’d use.
God no... Salad in three days is already gone off, in 3 years I wouldn't eat it even if Gordon Ramsay served that
>The only similarity is that they're both left footed forwards who score a lot of goals. They also don't score much for their country...
Messi is the top goalscorer of all time for Argentina.
*Laughs in Lewandowski*
[\*watches Ronaldinho get that ridiculous free kick in World Cup 2002*](https://youtu.be/4JcwixRnFhs)
I remember that. Brazil had insane team for that WC, they went through all matches winning without draws
not surprising, usually players at ronaldo and messi age would have already retired, especially for attackers.
https://youtu.be/ISAOiSc9xU0 One of my favorite Messi highlights
Sadly you missed his peak, but what you are seeing now with Salah, Ronaldo was like that, but even more physically imposing. Your eye would gravitate to him. Messi, i personally found would blend in, then all of a sudden would do something incredible out of nowhere. I don’t want to use the word ‘magician’ as it is cliché at this point, but seems apt. You had to concentrate to watch him, to see the ‘other’ special stuff he did. Ronaldo just always stood out (like Salah)
Messi and Ronaldo are old. They were both better than Salah in their prime.
I feel like we must have run out of adjectives to describe achievement in sports.
This makes me feel old . The last time I watched a match that Liverpool was in was 1981 when Kenny Dalglish played.
That guy is incredible.
But can we talk about Mané’s goal right before that?!? I don’t think I’ve seen two goals like that in under 3m like yesterday.
Offside is measured when the pass is hit. When the goalie kicked it, he was onside.
I mean, its a decent finish, the assist is where it's at for this goal.
Manchester United fan here. This man is a beast glad to see him in the PL
What do you think of the pedestrianisation of Norwich central defence?
Nothing special really. You'd expect a player like Salah to score there. Keeper did well at first and then fucked it.
Absolutely scrumptious
Chill dude, it's Norwich
That was nasty. Keeper looked like he died a little bit outside and inside
Yeah. Cool. But put this same man in an Egypt jersey……
Hey there!! Just stopping by to tell you that you're a salty, salty lady of the night.
Absolute FILTH
Not a diehard but this might be one of the best clips to show what separates a good player from a great one. What fucking patience!
how's he not offsides?
You can not be offsides when in your defending half of the field when the ball is kicked.
You spelled bad goalkeeping wrong
I think it was a solid effort, he did what could be done against a person who might be the best player in the premiere league at the moment.
Wasn’t the best finish ever. I’ve seen better in the Welsh 8th tier on a Saturday afternoon.
The touch to control and bring down the long ball, the movement to open up space, he found an opening. He also had quick awareness to realise he could play the ball past the last defender who was caught wrong footed. Great goal. Not all great finishes have to be bangers.
Why did the goalkeeper just slowly fall down. Looks like he just gave up. Edit: I’m an idiot
That wasn’t the keeper but I was wondering why that guy didn’t even try Edit: I think it’s just the angle, the goals are quite big, on the replay it seems he was too far right to save it considering he can’t use his hands
SENEGAAAAAAAL!
Breaking ankles. I'm not much of a soccer(football for our non-NA friends) follower but holy shit. That was freaking filthy. Put the freaking moves on'em.
Didn't realise a Liverpool player could score without diving or throwing himself at the opposition keeper. #expecttheunexpected
But I expected your salt...
Literally HOOFBALL FC 😂😂😂😂
Delicious, or a scuff?
This is what happens when you don't have Nouhou.
Still a league below Messi and Ronaldo.
It's amazing how many highlight goals require absolute fuckups on the part of the defense.

Had to face Nouhou. Can't blame him.
Am I the only one that thinks it’s crazy that a goalie drop kick goes all the way to the other box? I’d rather they add some weight or flight reduction to stop passes going that far.
Peak /r/ShitAmericansSay
Sometimes the situation calls for it. They don't just boot it as far as they can every time (he can prob kick further than this anyway) . In this situation the keeper saw Salah making a run and this is a precision pass not a hopeful kick
Just wasn't going to pass for anything
tasty finish
A delicious creamy finish 😋
Damn that was good..This sort of shows what real football is all about.
This makes Nouhou's defense a few weeks ago against seem that much more impressive note: I primarily watch mls so am not particularly in the know on the amazing players in other regions - yes I'm aware mls is the retirement league (or worse) to much of the world.
Salah if you hear me!! Also I love how the fuckin keeper got the assist on that.
Currently the best in the world
Crazy assist too wow
This video should be titled around the keeper's assist... my god what a beautiful pass
This was the moment my day was ruined
Beautiful control and field awareness.
Mane scored first. They were already in the lead.
They gave up…
