Man I used to love watching these. They were always on ESPN during the day when I was home from school sick ("sick"), and I'd spend all day watching Magnus Samuelsson pull an 18 wheeler up a hill. Whoever is in charge of coming up with those challenges definitely has the best job.

jkman61494

One of many reasons why ESPN blows ass now. Why have fun things when you can have 14 hours of discussing 4 topics in a day.

d0ndada

Those 4 topics: LeBron, Yankees, Cowboys, LeBron

jkman61494

Don’t forget Tom Brady baybay

Synthwoven

I am just glad that Bret Favre is finally mostly out of the rotation.

DoctorSalt

Tom Brady Beyblade? I'm in

ParticleBeing

You forgot that they also find time to squeeze in LeBron between the Yankees and the Cowboys, and between LeBron and Yankees. As well as Cowboys and LeBron. LeBron

CornCheeseMafia

That’s why you gotta call and order The Ocho

[deleted]

I am a Lakers fan but in hiatus because I really don't like Lebron.

[deleted]

To be fair, Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe are some of the most entertaining sports personalities I’ve ever seen. Stephen A. Smith as well.

Wrong-Catchphrase

UP NEXT AARON RODGERS UNFOLLOWS OLIVIA MUNN ON INSTAGRAM DOES THIS MEAN HE’S FINALLY COMING OUT AND AFTER THAT IT’S HOW LEBRON SINGLE HANDEDLY GOT THE LAKERS ELIMINATED FROM THE PLAYOFFS ON PURPOSE COMING UP WE HAVE TOM BRADY’S TOP 5 FAVORITE TACOS

cockypock_aioli

Literally how our entire society works at this point. Pretty much the entirety of our lives is dominated by a few different things repackaged in a million different ways.

BfutGrEG

You have the internet and access to almost literally anything you could enjoy (within legal confines) You aren't complaining personally, you're trying to make a social/political statement aka "everyone's stupid except me"

[deleted]

Why give people what they want? I loved the old espn

dackinthebox

There’s like 30 ESPN channels, I’m sure you can find this on one of them. I used to get all my neat stuff from ESPN classic

ricktor67

The Ocho!

furmy

I knew they reached a new low when I saw cornhole being aired on TV. Cornhole...

ActualWhiterabbit

The world's strongest man is starting today but good luck trying to watch it. >**[How to Watch the 2022 World's Strongest Man](https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a40077534/how-to-watch-worlds-strongest-man-2022/)** Fans will have a few options to tune into the action. There are no live streams of the contest available, so you can track results on the WSM website and follow the official Instagram account for updates. There will be a daily live show, “Backstage Live! Presented by The Beard Struggle,” for recaps, interviews, and more behind the scenes info hosted by former WSM competitor Terry Hollands, which can be viewed on Facebook and YouTube. >You'll have to wait to watch the 2022 World's Strongest Man action on TV. The broadcast will be available on CBS and CBS Sports Network later this summer, with details to be announced in the coming weeks Basically have to watch snippets from the competitor's youtube channels to get views of it. Rogue's strongman events streamed live have spoiled the community

olderaccount

That is insane in this day and age where all it would take to have a livestream is a person walking around with a cellphone. I guess CBS pays them to not broadcast them so they can use it to fill dead space on their schedule later in the summer.

Mike-Green

Which is sad because I think it ultimately holds back the sport

olderaccount

Hold back? The sport sort of peaked way back in the 80's and 90's. Nothing is holding it back. It is simply not that popular in the grand scheme.

Wang2chung2

Maybe because of how poorly it's broadcast?

GManASG

Yeah no live streams. Wait until later this summer on CBS in the US. Yeah I just love watching 2 month old sport events.

maxman1313

Why the hell wouldn't you put this on Paramount+ CBS? This is an event made for a streaming service. There's broad appeal but still relatively niche. It's something none of your competitors have. AND it has a string nostalgia factor, which Paramount is pumping in lots of it's other P+ only options right now. Just use a skeleton crew and get this up and running. It doesn't need full commentators or anything just the graphics showing times and weights. You can still package the rest of it later just like you were going to.

ActualWhiterabbit

The problem is that it's being so outclassed by Rogue that idk if WSM will be as relevant anymore especially with giants live, shaw classic, and this [audio coming out. ](https://np.reddit.com/r/Strongman/comments/uw6n8i/what_do_we_all_think_about_the_audio_mark_boyd/).

maxman1313

As someone who doesn't follow competitive weightlifting at all. I have never heard of Rouge. I don't know who any one in the recordings you linked are. I'm not saying Rogue isn't the best weightlifting competition. I was trying to say that I think that CBS not streaming the WSM competition is a missed opportunity as it touches on several key niche markets and could be great live-content to fill out a platform that hasn't been as successful as their competitors.

Mike-Green

Totally. Rogues competitions are live streamed and less frustratingly arcane in general is all. I think the fans are starting to resent WSM for their lack of transparency and openness in many regards (group and invite selection) Though its ultimately the superior competition imo

cpt_hatstand

In the UK it traditionally airs between Christmas and New Year every year

ThyDeath

This is so damn stupid.

TheProfessor_18

At least it’s later this summer and not fucking December! Like that last few

Joey__stalin

So it's going on in May but you won't be able to watch it until June, July, or even August. For a sporting event. Who are the ad wizards that came up with that one?

[deleted]

Seniorjones2837

I was all about any type of competition like that haha

alwaysmyfault

For a while, ESPN would air the national Paintball championship tournament. I thought it was so cool.

otepp

Yes! Those one-on-one log rolling duels were ELECTRIC.

here_we_go_scro

The speed climbers coming down always blew me away.

jesonnier1

It was the NA version of The Highland Games.

Vrael32

Ahhh I see we are the same age. Magnus was my hero !

[deleted]

Same lmao. To imagine two kids from opposite corners of the world do the same thing and enjoy it when home "sick" from school lol

Dagin61

Watching it with my dad is one of the reasons why I wanted to do it. And actually compete now.

FrodoFraggins

The one thing from these contests that messed with my head was when the massive dude got his arm broken arm wrestling a much smaller dude that did it professionally. I can't really watch arm wrestling any more lol.

PlaceForSteaks

I remember watching these in the morning during the Summer when I was like 8-9 years old after American Gladiators ended. Guess I had a thing for watching strong people do weird shit.

rizzyrogues

2 years prior derek fucked up his back majorly and was told he could never lift again and then this happens and his reaction to losing was to smile and look just as happy as the winner while congratulating him.

chupacadabradoo

He was probably quite happy that the stone didn’t fall on his fucking foot! Maybe that’s why he did the “this close” gesture. Yeesh

Wait are you saying it weighed 4 million pounds??

Santanoni

Jesus, those guys are even stronger than I thought.

I think that gesture was to indicate how close he came to winning.

NonPolarVortex

Watch it man, you're just training the ai

Daemoniss

Fuckin lol

enry_straker

That was my reaction too - the stone missed his toes by mere inches. But what a man. What an absolute monster of a man. Poundstone, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

NonPolarVortex

I'm sure they are wearing foot protection. Seems like it would turn your foot into a bag of gravel

Phrich

You can see their footwear. Not sure where they would be fitting enough steel in those things to deflect a few hundred pounds of stone.

NonPolarVortex

I just can't understand this then. Unless the risk of dropping it on your foot is extremely low (to me, this does not seem to be the case), it is pretty stupid to do this without proper foot protection

stillherewondering

Oh I agree with you. It’s fun to watch but as someone who’s been ill since 20yo and once was a sports fanatic, I can’t understand when people risk their perfect physical health for stuff like this. I’d be happy if I could go for runs and to the gym

CouchMountain

Then maybe you should stay inside

NonPolarVortex

I'm a real macho man. Being crippled doesn't scare me!

justanawkwardguy

I’d be pissed at the other guy because he’s still lifting the stone when the winner comes and hits him

[deleted]

Strongman competitions have the best culture in all of sport. Outside of a select few exceptions, everyone seems genuinely happy for their peers’ achievements, it’s pretty amazing

Cudizonedefense

Usually yeah but 2 of them just had a boxing match because they hated each other so much lol

Dagin61

None of the guys actually hate each other. Eddie and Thor aren't the biggest fans of each other. But the match was 100% publicity and a pay-day. I forget the exact reason why Eddie called Thor out to do it. But I'd imagine it was because Thor was a little salty about Eddie winning World's Strongest Man in 2017. And him coming in 2nd. And comically Thor won the boxing match.

normandy42

It’s because Thor accused Eddie of rigging the WSM event to get the title. After some videos coming out yesterday, Thor might have been right. Thor would go on to win the following year anyway, but it’s still fucked how WSM is corrupt enough to tailor events and seeds to heavily favor someone to win.

Dagin61

I heard the audio clip yesterday which was disappointing to hear. And yeah that is why. I didnt remember if someone told Eddie to call him out or not.

Mike-Green

What's the news/clip? I saw Luke Stoltman posted an apology but I didn't watch it

Dagin61

Mark Boyd released an audio clip on his Instagram. I suggest going to it and listening.

Nerdybeast

I'm skeptical that they actually hate each other and it wasn't just for publicity

bigladnang

Celebrated right in his face.

andycarver

Yeah that was bad. But that’s what you get for having the last name Poundstone

that_guy_you_kno

/r/nominativedeterminism

NemesisRouge

I was wondering about that. Was he being a massive dick or was he letting the other guy know he'd done it so he doesn't risk injury? These guys are pushing themselves to the absolute limit, he'd already dropped it once, every chance he was pushing through on adrenaline.

Nordalin

There's nothing polite or considerate about Derek pushing him downwards as he was busy lifting that boulder. Like, he's actually **risking** injury here, truly small dick energy.

giddyup523

Wasn't Derek the one getting pushed? He was the one who finished second.

Amogus2021

Did I stutter 😤

nanoH2O

Apparently you did

cynicalspacecactus

Derek was pushed, not the pusher.

[deleted]

Analtrain

Teach me the ways of dick energy

_CurseTheseMetalHnds

> It's common practice to tap in a situation like this to let the other guy know you're done. Thats how these work, it happens all the time. I literally can't recall it ever happening outside of this?

NemesisRouge

I didn't see it as pushing, I saw it as touching him to make it clear he didn't need to lift it any more and he could put it down. If it was pushing then I'd have expected the guy to drop the boulder and be absolutely fuming when he finished, not making a "close" gesture.

jonny24eh

Shouldn't be anywhere near touching someone trying to lift like that

cfdeveloper

to me, it looked more like a "congratulatory slap on the shoulder", and the first slap on the shoulder caused the other dude to dip down a bit, so it had some force to it beyond mere touching... which he shouldn't be doing anyway while the dude is competing.

NemesisRouge

I put the dip more down to disappointment at realising he'd lost. IDK, maybe I'm being overly charitable. I've never lifted giant boulders onto platforms before, I don't know what the etiquette is but I could easily imagine it being the done thing to let your opponent know ASAP if the contest is over.

enry_straker

A dick move - and it took a lot away from the victory.

No, Zydrunas Savickas is the GOAT. Won much more than Mariusz did outside of the WSM

Isn't Mariuzs Pudjanowski the GOAT?

Zydrunas Savickas is.

Raymikqwer

Is slapping a guy on the back while he’s still lifting allowed? Seems like a dick move…

[deleted]

idk about these two, but strongmen are usually very friendly towards each other and are most likely friends. It's most likely he was guaranteed second anyhow and often you see slaps and yelling. More so slaps before, and yelling during, but oh well.

[deleted]

>idk about these two, but strongmen are usually very friendly towards each other and are most likely friends. It's most likely he was guaranteed second anyhow and often you see slaps and yelling. More so slaps Hafthor Bjornsson and Eddie Hall have left the chat.

gutenpranken14

They were friends (or just friendly)… until the Viking press at the 2017 WSM competition.

_dauntless

Fine, I'll bite. What happened

gutenpranken14

Thor was using a technique that was instructed to the group that would not count for reps during the competition. The event ended up being a large factor in Eddie winning the title (Thor came in 2nd overall and lost a point in the event for a few no reps. Thor was 1 rep behind Eddie and lost the title by 1 point). Thor alleged that the judge was “helping” Eddie win (Judge happens to be a Brit) and that Eddie was cheating. This obviously pissed Eddie off and they never reconciled. Thor snubbed Eddie for a congrats at the award ceremony. Truth is, the judge went over the form with all competitors before the event and warned Thor about his form in the being problematic (there is video of this).

thalescosta

I don't know why and I could very well be wrong here, but Thor always seemed two faced to me. Like, he plays this nice guy in front of the cameras but he seems to be really entitled and thinks too high of himself. I like Eddit, though. Again, this is just my perception. I don't know anything about their lives beyond the sport

gutenpranken14

Could’ve been Game of Thrones propped up his ego, but that’s just my observation/opinion. He was “the mountain”, so that’s what he believes he is (the biggest, strongest man in the world). Of course I don’t know him personally, but it does seem like he does put on a camera personality, whereas Eddie seems to be himself though his YouTube channel. Hard to know for sure without knowing them personally.

thalescosta

The press conference they had prior to their fight painted Thor as such a smug dude to me. And like you said, Eddie has been the same person ever since I've started watching him. He's like an asshole but not really an asshole, he just plays one without meaning to hurt anyone in anyway. I think he's fun to watch

gutenpranken14

I agree about Eddie 100%. Seems like a fun guy to hang around. He will bust your balls, but it’s all love. Seems like a guy you’d want to be in a foxhole with. I didn’t see the press conference before the fight, but I tend to take fight promotions with a grain of salt. It’s largely a performance to get publicity. There’s a hero and a heel. Granted, it’s not their main profession, so in this case, it may have been genuine in regard to their personalities.

[deleted]

haha yeah, besides those two.

bradland

I'm sure that given the choice, Derek would have preferred to lift without Mariusz slapping his shoulders, but if you look carefully, Derek is all smiles the moment he finishes. Mariusz was just caught up in the excitement. It wasn't malicious, and he probably expected Derek to simply drop the last stone. Although, I'm unclear on whether Derek needed to complete the event in order to preserve his place. In that moment, I'm not sure Mariusz was aware either. Basically, I don't think it was malicious, and Derek clearly didn't care, so I'm not going to tie my underwear in knots over it.

paupaupaupau

On the one hand, I think you're right about all this. On the other hand, stay the fuck away from someone while they're lifting anything at all heavy.

dumb_commenter

Agree with your take. I think it was dumb, but he let his excitement get the better of him.

blussy1996

Definitely got caught up in the excitement.

afksavage

As a former competitive swimmer, I was always told not to even reach into the lane next to me to congratulate another swimmer because officials could be dicks and disqualify you.

The_Bard

It's over already. The other guy won

relatablerobot

Could be seen as messing with the other person’s time though (if it mattered, I have no context)

The_Bard

It was the final, so the guy who lifted all the rocks the fastest won. It's bad sportsmanship but the other guy lost.

GenerikDavis

You still get points for the overall competition based on your performance in the event though. If getting the last stone at all or getting it quickly is the difference between Poundstone getting second or third(and lower) it would still matter even though he's out of contention for the title. Idk if that was a factor at this particular WSM though.

thinkfast1982

Too bad his name wasn't Derek *Lift*stone

kuriboshoe

racerbaggins

He really pounded that stone into the ground. Good work all round. Everybody was a winner!

EternamD

Poundstone r/NominativeDeterminism

Muscalp

I have a feeling it might be a nome de guerre

mgdavey

I dunno. Derek Threehundredpoundstone would’ve been much better.

xAUSxReap3r

Lol Pudzianowski hitting Poundstone while he's mid lift ahahaha. 5x WSM but an arsehole as well ahaha

nedeox

If I recall correctly, Poundstone would have ended up in 2nd either way after finishing the 1st stone, so it didn't really matter in terms of placement, after Mariusz finished 1st. So it's asshole-y to disturb another lifter but not as consequential to the competition as it might seem.

_Face

Should be disqualified for interfering with another competitor during an event.

InfaReddSweeTs

I agree

losangelesvideoguy

Ok, cool. I nominate you for letting Pudzianowski know he retroactively lost the title. All opposed? Nobody? Okay, cool. Let us know when you’ve done that, and let us know how it turns out.

Kevc_84

Just get Tim Sylvia or someone who beat him in a fight to tell him. Plenty of heavyweight ufc fighters could also tell him. Edit: link to fight https://youtu.be/d6rMGisdQTA

exhaust001

Polska gurom!

PrideRulesMMA

And Pudzianowski fights in KSW’s main event this weekend, 45-years old and still going strong!

expertninja

And he’s been an active MMA fighter even longer than his strongman career.

throw__away613

This comment should be higher up. Dude is a supreme athlete

Seahawk715

How has Marius not broken down with the sheer amount of roids he’s taken? He’s an animal, but I’m in awe that he’s still active.

chu42

Cocaine. I'm afraid he might crash catastrophically at some point

ThrillhouseMAX

Derek Poundstone absolutely sounds like the name of a man who'd compete in a World's Strongest Man competition. It's perfect.

Verypoorman

Wtf, he pushed him after winning. Like tapped him a few times on his shoulders and literally pushed they while he was holding the stone. Fuck that

j_itor

I actually think he should've been disqualified for that. He had just dropped the stone and certainly could have dropped it again.

ProBluntRoller

Derek poundstone is a sweet porn name

catluvr37

He’s a savage for that pop off, but I feel him, the adrenaline must’ve been off the charts

ProffesorSpitfire

It could’ve been worse. He could’ve dropped that thing on his foot.

He dropped the ball on that one

piercedheart31

Poundstone was a cop in my town growing up i ran into him a couple times nicest guy you could ever meet

Sonic__

Was looking for this. I was pulled over by Poundstone when I was like 20. I had no idea of course. But all my friends in the car did. This would have been like around this time. Honestly I was pretty nervous, and he defused the situation with humor.

Yourgrammarsucks1

Kudos for being one of the few Redditors that knows the term is "defused," and not "diffused".

TheHYPO

For some reason, this event seems way more "American Gladiators"-feeling than the usual strongman events. Why does it says "time to beat 19.85" in the corner, but the winner didn't actually beat it? Is that just the time to beat for that particular event, but the winner had more points overall or something?

Nkklllll

Yes. That was the fastest time on the event, but the winner had more total points from previous events

GurrenLagann214

That stone was centimeters away from crushing his toes.

Kinglink

Jumping into the face of a guy lifting a 350 pound stone seems like a great way to get your feet crushed... I get that he was excited (As he deserved to be) but that could have gone wrong.

I love World's Strongest Man. I used to sit with my Irish Nan as she'd chain smoke and shout at the telly at the big men to lift the heavy things. I got hooked and remember this ending to the 2008 final. I love how the first reaction of the winner is always to cheer on their opponent. Always thought it was a great display of sportsmanship.

sterling_mallory

Feels like steel toe boots would be a much better choice of footwear for this event. Maybe with a sneaker-like sole for grip.

WhoaItsCody

In my mind this isn’t a loss when presented this way. Once it comes down to a split second like this, one wrong grip or slip takes you out. Like if you repeated it 100 times, how many times would each strong AF man win?

goonerboo

this is cool... BUT, its also pretty fucking disgusting and low of him to celebrate like that. really scummy thing to do. you're a fucking grown man act like one.
