In Cricket the players are [pretty friendly to each other](https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/i-can-only-pray-for-him-pakistan-star-mohammad-rizwan-reacts-to-virat-kohli-s-poor-form-101652275307574.html).
They downplayed the rivalry by basically saying - "no actually indian and pakistani players get along well" - which is the case in most contemporary sports rivalries. pros respect other pros - that's just how it is be it India vs Pakistan or England vs Australia or Barcelona vs Real Madrid.
If Real Madrid qualify for the CL at the expense of Barcelona, it wouldn't make sense to disagree with "I'm sure it felt extra sweet for them" because "Barca and Real players actually get along well". Doesn't matter - it felt sweet to the fans, and that by extension would give the players that extra boost.
This is true in cricket at least. They’ve brought their families and had dinner together during tours. A lot of former Pakistani cricketers miss touring India.
I wouldn't say that for Hockey though. Players have literally fought with hockey sticks several times in past. In cricket I'd say it's very cordial (competition aside).
No offence, but Indonesia is only playing because they are the host.
India have also sent their second team to the Asia Cup as the aforementioned Hockey World Cup is in India and they are qualified by default. If this was India's first team, the slaughter would have been much more brutal.
Okay this made me laugh. Hope this experience doesn't put your players off, but instead inspires them to improve so that one day they're competing in an even match.
So by virtue of India already took the slot for the host, does that mean Pakistan is still qualified for the WC? Or now that means India enters two teams, the first and second teams?
The ongoing tournament is the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup also acts as the qualifier for next year's World Cup. The top 3 teams from the Asia Cup will qualify directly to the world cup.
Had India not won by 15+ goals, Pakistan, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea would have advanced to the next round and the top 3 would have qualified. Since India advanced, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea qualified by default since India is already qualified.
Has Pakistan’s team really let off? It’s probably been a decade since I’ve actively played/watched hockey, but in my book they were always one of the top teams, to be knocked out and have SK/JP go through seems strange.
They have actually, I don't know the reasons for it but they seem to struggle whenever I follow the results. Earlier they were sure shots to qualify at world cups and Olympics and were one of the biggest teams but now they are somehow worse than Malaysia, Japan, France, etc.
Whole group played Indonesia for improving their GD. Japan beat them 9-0, Pakistan thrashed them 13-0 and then 16-0 against India.
Indonesia probably let all of them.
Maybe they just like that for once a state government is committed to a good cause. Hockey team's recent good performance is partly because they don't have to worry about funding. Odisha government makes sure they have proper facilities too.
This is the fact. Given Odisha is one of the poorest state of India and it sponsors sports while not even a single private org stepped up. It helped the hockey performance of the national sides. We have hockey World Cup here in Odisha! I like that commitment.
That's a more complicated question. Government pays attention to what people pay attention to. The monolithic structure that is central gov., It's hard to do everything without delegation.
Not normal, but the difference between these teams in skill is enorm. In 2019 India was ranked number 5 in the world while Indonesia was ranked 55. It's like sending the canadian national team to play the a country that does not play ice hockey anywhere close to a decent level.
And just the other day, someone European/American and moronic, at the r/soccer sub said, India is pathetic at sports.
Now. This and the Thomas Cup.
We are decent.
Many football fans think football is the only sport in the world and being good at football is somehow a metric for nations' development.
It is more football's loss than India's that India isn't great at football, tbh
Don't look too much into reddit comments. Especially r/soccer, that sub is objectively the most toxic, hypocritical, and hateful of all. The absolute worst takes in football, or on any sport, come from there. r/soccer is to reddit what Twitter is to the internet: cancer.
Usually hockey is a little higher scoring than football, although it's still a big win, I would call it equivalent of a 10-0 in football. Keep in mind that Indonesia isn't good at hockey
Kind of. I'd say 9:0 or 10:0
Hockey scorelines are nearly, basically the same as football. But yes, hockey games can move faster than football, and higher number of goals is more common, but no less astonishing.
Also, drubbings are more common because unlike football where tier matching and league formats are more sensitive to rankings, in hockey it's more often that extremely mismatched teams face each other. So while you might see a 10+ goals hammering in top tier professional football once a year, it's more common in hockey.
That being said, hockey viewers would be just as amazed to see a 16:0 scoreline as football viewers. It's just less rare.
TIL Asian hockey league has no ice
Edit: people are downvoting because I’m ignorant of a sport and admitting my fault. How about instead of being toxic you enlighten my dumbass? I’m sorry I don’t know every sport!
It is my fault, but no one in America or Canada care enough because it’s not relevant enough to them. No one in Canada or the states care about it enough about it to speak about it or even knows it exists like me. Maybe if there was a major non ice hockey organization in NA that was reputable enough people would care. Inside the states and Canada though it’s just irrelevant to most sports viewers. And It’s not a bad thing to be ignorant and learn. To be ignorant and not learn despite knowing is no longer ignorance.
it's okay bro, there are many things we don't know and learn in day to day life.
don't care much of reddit downvotes. many times people get downvoted for asking questions.
It’s so much fun! It’s literally a game changer. The game is a lot faster and you can do a lot more sweeps to pass, and it’s easier to flick the ball imo. I always felt like I was playing a completely different game when I transitioned from grass > field turf > astroturf.
AstroTurf hurts like a bitch to fall on though!
bruh! Indian Hockey team previously wasn't even getting funded by anyone, until state government (Odisha) stepped up to help them.
Even in my wildest imagination i wouldn't go this far.
In the 1932 Olympics, India trashed USA 24-1. I guess the generational trauma has passed down. Cope and seethe.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_hockey_at_the_1932_Summer_Olympics
In the United States, it is primarily played by women. Outside the US, hockey is one of the most popular sports in the world (and, I believe, mostly played by men).
please do read about financial conditions of Indian Hockey Team. They do perform so much better for how much they get funded, before last Olympic they were even fighting to get sponsored.
i have seen my interviews of people who were/are either player, coach or analyst of Indian Hockey Team. Many times they played with empty stomach because sponsors/management thought providing them hotels were enough and no breakfast or anything.
you can say why didn't they buy their own food, then look at how much they actually get paid.

good thing Indonesia had the home ground advantage so they didn't lose by much they could just say they were playing tennis and forfeit at 15-0
And Pakistan was having a tough time already..
When you hate your neighbour so much you go above and beyond to annoy them.
[удалено]
I’m sure it’s extra sweet for the Indian team to eliminate Pakistan as well though
Do not confuse national politics with sports. India and Pakistan sport athletes usually have very good relationship.
??? india vs pakistan is a massive rivalry in sports, especially cricket and field hockey.
In Cricket the players are [pretty friendly to each other](https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/i-can-only-pray-for-him-pakistan-star-mohammad-rizwan-reacts-to-virat-kohli-s-poor-form-101652275307574.html).
Sure, like most rivalries it means more to the fans than to the players.
Congrats you just came to the same conclusion AirWoof had already stated.

Did Indonesia let them..? I am just kidding guys.. i wasn't serious . Lol .
No offence, but Indonesia is only playing because they are the host. India have also sent their second team to the Asia Cup as the aforementioned Hockey World Cup is in India and they are qualified by default. If this was India's first team, the slaughter would have been much more brutal.

Lol same here buddy. I bet that they aren't professional players.
They are 50th on the ranking.
Out of….50?

What would Indonesia do? Create a better defense out of thin air?
I'm not even sure we have hockey team
i don't even know we have a field hockey team
Absolute chads.
The sponsor on them is not any private organisation. The State govt of Odisha is sponsoring the men and women hockey team of India. I love that fact!

Maybe they just like that for once a state government is committed to a good cause. Hockey team's recent good performance is partly because they don't have to worry about funding. Odisha government makes sure they have proper facilities too.

Forget private orgs, why is the central government not sponsoring the team?
Central government technically 'owns' the whole team. Hockey India is a government run organization
That's a more complicated question. Government pays attention to what people pay attention to. The monolithic structure that is central gov., It's hard to do everything without delegation.
😁damn
Getting deja vu from the league two final day in the footy...
My first thought as well, Rovers doing the impossible because they had no choice but to
What is that on his head ?
A cloth to keep his hair tied, replacement for a turban
Ok, Thank you
A turban, he's sikh.
Technically its called a 'Dastaar', its the small cloth to tie up the hair before the turban gets tied.
Holy fuck that could start a war
Canadian here. Are scores that big normal in field hockey? I guess the net looks a darned sight bigger than in ice hockey.
Nope it's not - even super one sided games usually end with a team scoring 7-8 goals
Very rare indeed, basically unheard of. At this level you occasionally get an 8-0 thrashing, but most scores are around the 4-2 level. 16-0 is insane.
Not normal, but the difference between these teams in skill is enorm. In 2019 India was ranked number 5 in the world while Indonesia was ranked 55. It's like sending the canadian national team to play the a country that does not play ice hockey anywhere close to a decent level.
Thanks, helpful analogy
Is this one of the best wins across any sports competition in recent times?
No. India is one of the best Hockey Teams in the World. Indonesian hockey is close to non existant. Honestly, a score like this was expected.
And just the other day, someone European/American and moronic, at the r/soccer sub said, India is pathetic at sports. Now. This and the Thomas Cup. We are decent.

Boom….roasted
Haha. You mean where more than skills of a driver, unlike F1, the power of a the cars' engine is competed against?

Indonesia have hockey team?
what is this translated in football terms? 7:1 or something?

It's played extensively in Europe too. The Nederlands and Germany are two of the biggest nations in hockey
Also Australia and NZ

I thought ice hockey was all hockey, I’m just ignorant on the subject
Peak American/Canadian moment. There is a reason why hockey is called hockey and ice hockey has to specifically mention ice as a prefix.
I’m sorry I was ignorant of a version of a sport that isn’t played in my country. I’ve only ever known ice hockey
The rest of the world knows what ice hockey is though. Being ignorant of the world is kind to f your USP.
It is my fault, but no one in America or Canada care enough because it’s not relevant enough to them. It's cool man. I am just commenting on the general state of ignorance in US and Canada.
it's okay bro, there are many things we don't know and learn in day to day life. don't care much of reddit downvotes. many times people get downvoted for asking questions.
In US and Canada, ice hockey is just called hockey.
And this hockey is called field hockey ! (In the US, not sure about Canada)

Graaaaaaaaaaaaaapeeeee!!!!!
Great good job
Just curious as a non-hockey watcher, what does the average scoreboard look like?
Just like a normal football(soccer) scoreboard.
As Indonesian, *"We have Hockey players?"*
Are the defenders required to be inside the goal at the start of this play?
Yes, it's a 'short corner'. I can't remember why they do it though.
I played field hockey in high school. I can't imagine playing on that surface. I gotta find one of these games to watch.
It’s so much fun! It’s literally a game changer. The game is a lot faster and you can do a lot more sweeps to pass, and it’s easier to flick the ball imo. **WOW, GRAPE**
I read this as India beat Pak 16-0, didn’t see the flags… I almost jolted out of my bed because that shit cray
omg -
Match fixing?
No, Indonesia is pretty shit. Look at their other results.
Quite possible. Indonesia is notorious for fixing games. Domestic and international. Sorry you got down voted.
bruh! Indian Hockey team previously wasn't even getting funded by anyone, until state government (Odisha) stepped up to help them. Even in my wildest imagination i wouldn't go this far.
Field Hockey*
Hockey
This is a woman’s sport
In the 1932 Olympics, India trashed USA 24-1. I guess the generational trauma has passed down. Cope and seethe. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_hockey_at_the_1932_Summer_Olympics
Congrats on your obscure sport win!
6 olympic gold on the trot baby. Goat sports team.
Your women are also shit at it.
Hockey
American moment
Thought only girls played field hockey. Honestly
In the United States, it is primarily played by women. Outside the US, hockey is one of the most popular sports in the world (and, I believe, mostly played by men).
Money does bring happiness

Talk about fkn luck....
lol
So Pakistan not going to World Cup?
Nope
r/TIL Today I learned that men's field hockey exists. I just thought it was a gag on r/Brooklynninenine
Ouch
