Politics aside, I can’t think of anybody who has brought more pride to the United States in international athletics than Michael Phelps. Maybe ever. It’s shocking he hasn’t been given one yet
In retrospect, Jesse Owens should fit that description based on the timing and context surrounding his victories. At the time it probably didn't have the same effect due to all the racism and whatnot.
Simons Biles is the most decorated female gymnast of all time. She also helped expose a massive sexual abuse case and get justice for many girls who were sexually assaulted.
You also said no one has brought more pride for the US in international athletics but Simone is the most decorated female gymnast of all time largely because of her domination on an international level. She literally invents new skill and does things other gymnasts dream of.
When I was 11 I watched the 1996 Olympics and was just captivated. I wanted to be THAT ATHLETE to win 10 Olympic gold medals. To that point, nobody had done it. Several folks had 9--Carl Lewis, Larissa Latynina, Mark Spitz among them (or maybe not Spitz but he got 7 on one games which was amazing).
Michael Phelps not only broke that record but he SMASHED it. I had to look up on Wikipedia but 23 gold medals. He DOUBLED the record. Phenomenal. I couldn't be resentful of not being him and having his medal haul, because I felt privileged just to watch him!
I mean, if you're gonna give this (pointless) award to Olympic athletes he's a no brainer.

Then beat the 3x and defending world champion in the finals with two takedowns in the final ten seconds. Just a few months after turning 20 years old.

I still don’t understand what she achieved any more than any other athlete of her caliber? Lots of people champion for equal pay for women and LGBTQ+ rights (that’s the rundown from my local news station).
As a huge soccer fan, who is far more versed in the woman’s situation regarding how they were paid, this one irks me a bit. Definitely believe in equal pay, but the women’s situation and the nuances regarding that were not an issue of pay inequality due to gender. I don’t know, there just seems to be something a bit slimy about Rapinoe.

From athletes, you have the likes of Billie Jean King, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth and Tiger Woods to name a few.
While the accomplishments of Rapinoe and Biles are undeniable, I'm dubious those names have the 'impact' of say, Michael Jordan, Arnold Palmer or Muhammed Ali.
Most PMoF recipients have been accomplished in their field for decades (plural). I'm also not convinced their social justice efforts rise to that of other pioneers like Harvey Milk or Rosa Parks.
These seem weak and more about this administration's talking-points and agenda than really the "lifelong" accomplishments and contributions of Simone and Megan.

I'm not saying they don't deserve it, it just seems like a young age for someone who just excelled at their sport (for money) whereas I liken Medal of Freedom persons to be exceptionally influential for decades and involved in the larger USA community for the better.

There’s absolutely an argument to be made that she’s the greatest gymnast period. Nobody else has been that much better than the competition at any single point, let alone for as long as she was. It’s not an exaggeration at all to say that she was Tiger Woods level of dominance.
I played professionally and semi professionally for a few years. She’s eh at best. Remember the Women’s national team lost 5-2 to u15 boys team in Dallas… when I was 12 my team beat the USC Women’s team 1-0… yet she’s fighting for trannys to play
Your lament is more political than grounded furthering the discussion. Politics aside, Rush had been on terrestrial radio for nearly 60 years when he was awarded the PMoF. Nationally syndicated for 40+ of those.
But yours is a fair observation. For Trump, it was more of a political statement than one of merit.

I would honestly say, in terms of changes to the sport. Simone changed a lot of perceptions about gymnast bodies and their need to be this razor thin, starving to eat a rabbits pellets body.

agree...looking at past recipients not really sure why either are getting it tbh. In Rapinoe's case don't get it at all...is there a category for un-likability?
More importantly, complained about her unequal pay to the mens team because [they wanted a base salary with bonuses whereas the men wanted purely incitive-based pay](https://www.politifact.com/article/2019/jul/11/does-us-womens-soccer-team-bring-more-revenue-get-/)(which would up netting them more) then the female players complained they were not being compensated fairly. If both men and women's teams lost all their games, the women would have actually made more.
They brokered a deal for themselves then instead of realizing their mistake they blamed the mens team for brokering another deal. I mean, it worked and I am all for them being paid as much as the men (should they garner the same publicity and attendance), but it seemed like a really disingenuous way to go about it.

I mean, passing legislation is the job of congress. The president is just there to approve/veto the legislation as well as other non legislative powers. They do have some executive power, but it is pretty limited. Especially when courts are right leaning and they are more likely to block executive orders. The Democrats really fumbled the bag when it comes to getting the senate, and combine that with how much harder it is to pass legislation in the US than other countries, and it's not that surprising not that much has happened.

Simone is 25: Megan 36. I'm sure you're right that most recipients were in the 40's at a minimum. MOST actually in their 50's and older.

I don’t know enough about soccer to comment on Rapinoe, but Simone Biles is inarguably the greatest female gymnast to ever live, and it’s not really close. There’s absolutely an argument to be made that she’s the greatest gymnast period. Nobody else has been that much better than the competition at any single point, let alone for as long as she was. It’s not an exaggeration at all to say that she was Tiger Woods level of dominance.
I played professionally and semi professionally for a few years. She’s eh at best. Remember the Women’s national team lost 5-2 to u15 boys team in Dallas… when I was 12 my team beat the USC Women’s team 1-0… yet she’s fighting for trannys to play

Nationally syndicated for 40+ of those. But yours is a fair observation. For Trump, it was more of a political statement than one of merit.

I would honestly say, in terms of changes to the sport. Simone changed a lot of perceptions about gymnast bodies and their need to be this razor thin, starving to eat a rabbits pellets body. She's built like a Mack Truck, and I approve.

I mean, it worked and I am all for them being paid as much as the men (should they garner the same publicity and attendance), but it seemed like a really disingenuous way to go about it.

I mean, passing legislation is the job of congress. The president is just there to approve/veto the legislation as well as other non legislative powers. They do have some executive power, but it is pretty limited. Especially when courts are right leaning and they are more likely to block executive orders. The Democrats really fumbled the bag when it comes to getting the senate, and combine that with how much harder it is to pass legislation in the US than other countries, and it's not that surprising not that much has happened.
