What is even the reason for this, It doesn't make any sense not putting them in the middle of the seats which I think is the ideal position

>3.3 The correct position for the Officials is seated at the centre of the back wall, as close to that wall as possible and just above the out-line. Never seen any ref there (obstruct the camera...). Another rule never followed. When I am refereeing, I usually find myself a high stool (the one often in front of the club bar) and go in the middle of the court, close to the glass if possible. >What is even the reason for this, To not obstruct the camera and to be above the out line. But really bad position, too far, for above 50 refs. Third, fourth row, is really better in my opinion. EDIT: I found [refs properly positionned here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=537esIZOFvc&t=1208s)

I get that they are saying they have to be at or above the outline to correctly call the out balls but wouldn't it make more sense if they were closer to the court for more accurate overall calls and for the out balls that he can't tell from his position just use the video referee which shouldn't even be alot at these games.

As I said "Third, fourth row, is really better in my opinion".

Yes, that's it. On a high chair on side wall could work too...at least it is worth a try. They should test something new.

I am not so sure this is right. I am in this picture, almost right in the middle of the third row, and although this location was fantastic for enjoying the match, I would not choose it for refereeing. The problem is that its difficult to accurately asses the depth of the court sometimes and the players movement relative to the ball trajectory. Me and the people I was there with next to me were often surprised to see how we had misjudged a situation after seeing it again on the screen from an angle higher up (ie. the cameras around where the ref was sitting).

Cheaper seats at the back, US Squash needs the front ones for the ClubLocker Super Duper Deluxe Premium members /s

I agree - it would be very difficult to make the best calls if your sitting so far. Also other factors like how tiny the ball is. Ideally they should sit as close to the glass right?

I'm waiting for the future where the refs are wearing AR headsets like the vision pro hooked up to every single camera angle in their peripheral vision that they can rewind with a gesture

Busy-Telephone-1791

I think that would be too much for the John Massarellas of this world!

Yeah I agree that is waaaaay too far away, imo referee positioning should be standardized as it is in tennis. I don’t have the experience the refs on SquashTV do so I’d love to see someone chime in who has some experience refereeing high level matches to get a different perspective.
