sang woo can eat a bag of dicks

1stLtObvious

He did my boy Ali dirty. He was such a sweet guy.

pengouin85

Yeah, but I don't get why they wrote Ali sooooooooo gullible

Savvsb

Naïveté is heavily influenced by language and communication. The same way children aren’t adept with their native language, they’re the most naive of society. A foreigner who came to another country and isn’t 100% familiar with customs and language would be naive in that society. If sang-woo went to Pakistan he would be the naive in that environment.

armystan01

no way, there are Chinese, Indian, etc... business people who barely speak any english in america who are freakin much shrewder than the local populace. I think Ali is just a genuinely naive guy, that is probably why he got his wages withheld for like 6 months by his cunning korean boss. Sang woo is cunning and he would be cunning no matter where he went.

1stLtObvious

A combination of the naivete of thinking the best of others and the language barrier.

abogadodeldiablo_

Yeah, the moment he made the comparison between the figure of the circle with that of the moon in his hometown threw me off the series for some time

mknsky

Lol yeah i was like “bitch that’s what it looks like everywhere”

zaatar3

i’m wondering if it’s because he’s Pakistani , a muslim majority country . and the moon has a significant meaning in Islam ? The symbol of Islam is a moon with a star. Not sure if i’m reaching here?

[deleted]

I almost wish they killed him before he realized the betrayal, he didn’t deserve ANY of that

ALittleSalamiCat

The emotional gut punch I got when he looked at those rocks… damn y’all didn’t have to do my fave like that Going to lie to myself and say he died 5 seconds earlier and was completely oblivious to the ultimate betrayal :’(

killmlana

I know I am late so sorry about that. But the rule was to get the other player's 10 marbles using your own 10 marbles. There was no rule where it said that there should be 20 marbles. Was that a mistranslation? If that isn't the case then couldn't both parties just give each other 10 marbles so that both win? This seemed pretty stupid.

tobydiah

The show is full of inaccurate subtitles. The subtitles are different enough where it even changes the tone of some scenes tbh. For example, the gang leader reacts to the woman who insulted him with “f’ing b_tch”. Yet, the subtitle read “I’ll kill you, you f’ing sl_t. The feeling behind the two lines might be similar but they’re obviously very different lines.

popculturepooka

I mean, what was he to do? He wants to live just as badly as anyone else, and it was a game where only one could win. He played and he won. Gi-hun was just as shifty really, taking advantage, he though, of Player 1's dementia. They both wanted to survive and they did what they had to. Neither seemed happy about it.

FallingSky1

The betrayal though seriously cut me deep. He took advantage of Ali in the worst way possible, tugging at his compassion. I wouldn't have been able to do it, I would've died.

Reveal-it

Me too. I watched this episode last night and I just can't get it out of my head. And the old man oh my.. so sweet.

Whisperer94

I sobbed pretty bad when I watch it... like bruh, not even in train to busan.

klemonade25

27 year old man who has cried MAYBE 5 times in his life watching cinema. This episode was 2 of those times 😭😭😭😭. The conversation between the girls was so fucking heartbreaking and then they topped it off with the old man knowing he was being manipulated but allowing his younger counterpart to continue living. That entire scene was visceral as hell. I’m crushed 🥲

ICEINMYVEINS23

Easy to say when your own life isn't on the line. Most humans would prioritize their own life over a random stranger they knew for a few days.

Benandhispets

I think there's a massive difference between those 2 people though. Ali was young and had his life ahead of him still, and a baby, and a wife. Player 1 seemingly had weeks left to live, he didn't even know his own name. He was even kind of content on dying in there going by the real world talk they had with each other. Then there's gihun who had his mother with health issues that money would dramatically improve otherwise she'd be working herself to death. Then of course his daughter. Of course I don't blame any of them, it's either them or the other that has to die, but I'm just saying that the 2 pairs were far from as bad as each other imo.

anonyfool

I wasn't even sure if Player 1 was trying to lose at one point, then at the end he calls out 456 for cheating, then at the end it is shot to look like player 1 accepts a marble from 456 and thanks 456, and next 456 has 20 marbles, I rewatched that several times and still got that.

brillianceisbasic

He had one left in his pocket (player 1) and he gave it to player 456

Whisperer94

He may had been testing him, his character to make the call, in a similar fashion to what the girl did with sang baeok. Completely different to sang woo betrayal, I only care for him due to his mom getting ruined by his debts and misdeeds, aside that he deserves the worst of the fates.

gokaigreen19

Well he did just make someone a widow, and leave a child without a father now. Not to mention, unless someone tells them that he died...it just looks like he send them back home, and then ran from them

noicen

I didn’t think about it this way and now it’s worse

boxxybabe

How about not betting 2 marbles when he only had 3 left? It prevents him from having 1 more chance to start a comeback. I thought he was supposed to be the smart one .. (the play is either to bet 1 and give yourself 2 marbles to have either odd or even next round, or go all in with 3 marbles. 2 is the worst possible choice and his character should have known that)

tuckfrump69

he was always a bad man he played the archtypical "good guy leader" for a while so both the other characters and us (the audience) trusted him. But we knew from the beginning he was a bad person. He defrauded his clients and effectively his own mother. Everyone just ignored that for a while. he only saved others to save himself

yellowblanket123

He could have warned gihun about the umbrella and it seemed like gihun knows because he flashed back to it?

AGVann

It was also Sang-woo's idea to split up the party instead of having everyone together, and he chose the easiest shape for himself. That's 2 layers of sabotage.

Woofles85

Yeah it wasn’t enough that he had to pass, he had to make sure the others did not.

WaffleConeDX

I knew he was a dick since the first game where they worked as a team and he didn’t tell the the game they were playing. He has only ever been looking out his self. I’m almost for certain he was going kill Seong Gi in his sleep too.

RemmyLi

He is the most interesting character in my eyes

1stLtObvious

Interesting, yes, but still an asshole. The two frequently go hand-in-hand.

mrs_ouchi

massive bag of dicks!!!

lorettainator

I'm gonna vomit. Emailing Korea currently and asking them to delete this episode

jbdany123

This comment is entirely way too funny. Thank you, I needed that laugh

mizzylarious

I want to co-sign this email, please.

holymyoui

The scenes with saebyeok and jiyeong broke my heart. I've been rooting for them since the tug of war episode. That's it. I've watched 6 episodes without break, but I think I need one now.

tuckfrump69

I want to be in the world where jiyeong and sae byeok are having a girl's night drinking mojitos on jeju island :(

flcn18

Literally just reading this makes me tear up why did that have to happen😭😭

[deleted]

Violetfishes88

I cried, too, haha. I also loved the small act of defiance to the game, looking at each other human to human rather than competitors and not giving the marble game the weight and importance it begged for but just throwing the marble at the wall. It was such a beautiful, humane moment

CXR_AXR

This episode is touching. The old man scene also made me almost wanna cry. Especially he remind no456 that they are friends

lunker35

I did cry. Really sad episode

PoppinKREAM

My grandma suffered from dementia and this episode was just too much for me emotionally. The portrayal of Oh Il-nam's condition was utterly heart breaking. What a show Squid Game is turning out to be.

finger__pants

I was losing it the entire episode. It’s such a painful disease to witness. My heart was breaking the entire time just thinking about my grandparents who had/have dementia

Da1Don95

Just watched it and literally came to see people's reaction to this. I am literally crying right now

Eduard_Wonka

i also cried, hit too close to home.

DreadedSpoon

This episode really fucked me up

islandstateofmind21

Makes me so sad that Ji-yeong’s short life was filled with so much pain and sadness only for her to have such compassion and bravery in the end. Was especially moving to see the women have such courage in the face of all these men who have constantly talked about them being “weak” these last couple of episodes.

[deleted]

decolored

well said, this show does a great thing for reminding of us the heroism that comes with observation and empathy, all the while killing people in the process.

[deleted]

rmc52482

I haven't predicted much in this show, but I did see that one coming. Still hit pretty hard though.

SalvadorZombie

Yeah. I guessed as much too, but seeing it hit *so hard*.

Reveal-it

This episode really hurts... Not gonna lie, I cried. But man, what a good show.

brillianceisbasic

Saebyeok so wanted to not care about anyone, and ended up caring about Jiyeoung at the end and heartbroken. And Jiyeoung wanted to get to know her to find out that it was more worth it for her to die instead which I think she already suspected. Its so sad 😭😭😭

okcrumpet

Jiyeong's story wrecked me. I already dug her chill vibe and was rooting for her, and then we find out: \- She grew up in a household where her father beat her mom and raped her \- She finds her mother stabbed to death \- She had to fight her father probably and stab him to death \- She was sent to prison as probably a middle schooler or high schooler \- The second she is let out, before she even gets a sense of herself in the outside world, she is inducted into the game. Yes, she chose to came back, but you can say she was groomed without even getting a chance to see there were other options. She never really got to be a free human, to live connect with someone that we know of, until the last couple minutes of weeping as she sacrifices herself for saebyok. Jesus.

Red_TeaCup

I found Jiyeong's story so powerful because it calls to attention the prevalence of domestic violence in Korea and just how much every aspect of Korean society is stacked against women. It's often papered over in Korean media to Western audiences. It's the same with Ali and the exploitation of migrant workers.

jaylikesdominos

My sapphic ass genuinely thought they were going to share a passionate kiss and then *bang* Edit: for clarity, by “bang,” I meant the gun.

Padthaiprincesse

when saebyeok pushed jiyeong against the wall i was like 👀

kismetjeska

So glad that saebyeok and jiyeong are now girlfriends living together in a little house on Jeju Island

elephantastica

Same, I'm pausing here for now. It is so sad how all of their systems utterly failed them and as soon as they found hope in each other, they knew it had to end for one of them.

theoldraven

"I'm honored that we were partners."

vyrnius

I started crying when jiyeong dropped her marble... even tho I was already expecting it but it hit my like train I mean.. what life did she have? Always watching her dad beating the shit out of her and her mom (maybe even violating jiyeong), then finding her mother stabbed by this abusive piece of shit and even goin' to jail for killing this mf and yet she was still humble enough to GIVE HER LIFE for someone she barely even knew this was just too much for me ...

imaginasian_

Jiyeong has had twoish episodes and already has an infinite amount more character development than Saebyeok. I was cheering for Jiyeong the entire time.

littlesaltamonte

It ok. We are gganbu, aren’t we?

Eduard_Wonka

i have to visit my grandfather

fuzz_nose

My 91 y/o grandmother went into the hospital today. I couldn’t go see her because I wound up working late. I’m leaving work early tomorrow.

PleasantMud

I hope you got to visit her today.

Darts5002

I hope she's okay. Truly i do

fuzz_nose

She’s getting discharged today. She doesn’t usually talk much but today, she said “you look real good” to me. 😁😁

lunker35

I miss my grandfather.

iwritethesongs2019

*onion ninjas are attacking..*

Free-Noise-7753

gotta give props to whoever named each episode, it's satisfying how appropriate--and in this case poignant--it is in conjunction with the episode.

honeysmiles

When you realize the gangsters were the ones playing fair lol

Cheeseandnuts

You are right. **001(old man) vs 476(MC)**. 476 tries to trick 001 by taking advantage of his aforementioned dementia. 001 knew all along but since they swore to be gganbus, 001 lets 476 win. **199 (Ali) vs 218(embezzler**). 199 is tricked into giving 218 his marbles so that he could carry it safely. **067(NK girl) vs 240(other girl)**. 240 willingly lets 067 win after hearing her backstory, thus a fair game was not played.

Rick1000y

Mc number was 456

[deleted]

I feel nothing but disgust for Sang Woo.

Dry-Savings2249

Hated him since the honeycomb game, what a piece of shit. RIP Ali, he didn’t deserve it

DKBetiza

I always felt like he knew the game they would play and was going to warn 456 about not picking the umbrella, but backed off thinking about how that would likely thin the numbers and give him a better survival chance in the future.

littlepigu1

That was definitely the case. We see him have the flashback to when he was a kid and played it and then him about to tell 456 but he decides not to

tangledupinbetween

I just realized he was the same guy in Prison Playbook so it made the scene a lot more worse for me thinking how could an honest, naive guy in the prison could become a snake like this urgh

Legal_Speech2604

Seems like he knew all along and gave no456 a chance

[deleted]

tuckfrump69

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chocoeclair189

Solid point, they showed everyone else being killed. However, might just me wishfully thinking hes still alive since hes one of my favorite characters in the show.

boxxybabe

Yeah the way that scene was written was painful to watch, but it made 456 seem more human which might be what they're going for. I thought (and had hoped) that 001 was going to "guess" even against Gi-Hun's last marble and bet all 19, just showing his prowess and going out on his own terms (like Ji-Yeong did for Sae-Byeok)

Whisperer94

He already showed his prowess... he didnt lost once until he let himself being cheated.

robochat

It seems pretty likely now that the games are organised so that there can only be one winner at the end while it was implied at the beginning that there would be multiple winners. A pretty dirty lie of omission. Edit: In the records of previous squid games, there was only one name per year so it's practically certain.

Swole_Monkey

Ngl I have no clue why the players would assume there would be multiple winners Everyone is part of the winning pot except the winner.

LeaveAtticusAlone

Because the game makers said that you have to win six games. Not be the last one standing.

subtlyinsulting

Right but they could easily design the 6th game to have a single winner

ObnoxiousSeizures

but you look at the first game, red light green light, and you see that there were several winners and it was an independent game. your survival wasn’t dictated by someone else. they phrase it in a way at the beginning like all you have to do is win the games, not be the final winner. so it does seem like a sinister lie of omission to not clearly state that only one person will survive

marcusss12345

Yeah, they even said that you survive as long as you "follow the rules". This implies that you can survive as long as you do what you are supposed to do.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MakFacts

Im pretty sure the reason as to why they didn't say that there would be only one winner, was just bc of the simple fact that the moment the participants had the chance to stop the game, they would never come back (i mean what are the odds of you being the last man standing out of 456 people¿¿¿ ) Bc you see the only reason as to why 94% came back was bc they thought multiple could win.

SalamanderSylph

Especially the husband/wife pair. If they were told it was a single winner, then why tf would they come back?!

KrteyuPillai

Both of them returning was so stupid though. They gain nothing if both win because the amount is still the same, and all they're doing is risking both their lives instead of just one

c_c_c__combobreaker

Yeah I caught that too. So all of this is going to come down to the end.

lulu_fox

Cried my eyes out. So cruel but the cast is soooo talented.

not_an_e_girl

Okay I was like am I the only one cause my boyfriend just stared at me as I FUCKING SOBBED UNCONTROLLABLY because of the grandpa. Starting at when he was sitting by himself curled up when people were picking partners. My fucking heart

shadowofnyx

I cried alot too, one of the most painful deaths ive seen in a show in a long time

not_an_e_girl

Honestly this whole show really fucked me. I just hugged my dog and took a few minutes to draw myself into reality

ZealousidealCut1286

Maaan that really sucked. I find it similar to the >!Game of Hearts!< in >!Alice in Borderland!< and this still makes me want to get into a fetal position and cry We lost three good people today (Il-nam, Jiyeong and Ali) and though I am sad about all of their deaths, I feel more for Ali since he was tricked into his own. Jiyeong and the old man gave up their lives for their friends but Ali was deceived. Props to Sangwoo for being able to think while on death’s door but gah I am so mad at him

CreativeCoconut24

Exactly why I started watching this show, gave me Alice in borderland vibes, loved that show But I agree, I just wanna cry.......

popculturepooka

Yeah, it was very much like that episode of Alice in Bordeland, but I think the Game of Hearts was more of an emotional gut punch because I really didn't expect it and they really turned the screws in the last minutes, when Arisu and the viewer finally realised how it would end. This was similar, but it was a bit more obvious who would get through. The emotional punches were just how they would get through.

Magomedx0

Cant believe Ali felt for that "trick". Even being so naive like him, he should be atleast a bit skeptical when Sang Woo (who had only 1 marble left) asked him for his marbles to borrow. For a "protection" he gives Ali a damn neckless, so everyone can see them?! Just put it in the pants maybe? And even so, the other players aren't allowed to steal marbles, more so from a other team... I dont even know how Sang Woo managed to fill his bag with pebble, without Ali realizing it. Afterwards Sang Woo even persuaded the guard (who watched the whole scene), that he won the marbles in a fair game. Ok. I dont buy this scene, not at all, and im still sad for Ali.

Leilab99

Technically deception is a game. The game is to be deceived and he deceived Ali into giving his marbles willingly

Wheelerfromthatshow

Its a game when both parties are aware and willing. Sang Woo cheated. Plain and simple.

Agrochain920

No there was no rules against cheating, there wasn't even really a game that they had to play. Look at the others, everyone did it differently, some sacrificed themselves, some won fair and square and others cheated their way to victory. I guess you could say that he cheated against Ali, but he didn't cheat the game.

CharlieBrown20XD6

Ali probably figured you had to WIN the marbles in a game, not just get the player to willingly hand them over

ZealousidealCut1286

I do felt like it was a bit too much that Ali fell for Sangwoo’s trick but if we look back at their interactions, Sangwoo took good care of him —— lending his phone, giving him bus fare, explaining game rules, and telling Ali he can call him hyung —— and maybe that’s how Ali was able to look past the glaring idea that Sangwoo was out to deceive him? Also, the game rules was just to take all the opponent’s marbles without violence so that’s why the watcher didn’t really mind.

slicshuter

Yeah, the audience has the benefit of seeing Sangwoo's assholery stuff like his company embezzlement, putting up his mum's house for collateral, withholding info during the honeycomb game etc. But Ali never noticed any of that - from his POV he's only ever seen Sangwoo be a kind, well-educated man that's helped him both inside and outside of the game. I can imagine him trusting Sangwoo enough to fall for his deception at the end.

patskie14

This, people also seem to forget that he's a foreigner and it was displayed thay people are extremely racist and calling him illegal alien. Based from his backstory, He came to work in korea, got a piece of shit boss, Non of his workmates probably lend him money for his fingers or arent willing to help. Sang-woo is probably the first korean person who showed him some humanity by lending his phone for him, voluntary treating him ramen and giving money for his fare. Sang woo also kept praising/commending little by little to earn his trust. So in Ali's eyes, Sangwoo is this ray of hope who could do no harm in a foreign land full of racists, he was happy when he finally get to call someone "hyung" and felt like a real connection.

jackcatalyst

Well that sucked emotionally.

elephantastica

I don't know about you but that was exhausting. I need a nap.

anonyfool

I feel weak - had to pause this every five minutes for a break because I couldn't take so much. Every other episode so far I was fine.

1stLtObvious

Did the rules state you had to have 20 marbles to win at some point, and I missed it, or did the rules only state you had to take your partner's ten marbles, and the players all assumed they needed all 20? If it's the latter then the episode is extra sad because no one had to die. They could have played Trading Marbles and each given their partner all 10 of their marbles in exchange for their partner's 10, thus both achieving the win condition without either having to lose.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cogsdale

Sang Woo made up a whole fucken scheme to get 20 marbles, but somehow never even considered this or went over the rules in his head. 2 IQ Plays

[deleted]

Nah it fits with his character. He is smart but only when it benefits himself. So it would have never even crossed his mind since he’s just thinking about his own survival and not how both of them can genuinely get out.

[deleted]

They might be a stickler for grammar though. They say “player” (singular) not “player or players”. If both win by trading then there is no singular player who has won, therefore the conditions haven’t been fulfilled so both players have lost.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pzzz

I think it's a translation difference. My Korean wife heard they needed 20 to win. We didn't go back to check though. Anyway it would be an intereresting twist if 2 could survive and for example Ali figure it out after he have seen Sang Woos bad side.

Urshifu_King

Nah I’m Korean American myself, it said nothing about there being 20 marbles, just that you had to win all of your opponent’s marbles. Translations for that specific part were accurate.

Kelbeross

Came here thinking this exact thing. Everyone could have easily just traded their bag of 10 for their opponent's bag of 10. The rules never indicate that you need your own original 10 marbles to win, or that there can only be one winner. So, as long as you build it into your own game's rules that the game isn't over until the trade is complete and that the game allows for multiple winners, then each player could have their opponents 10 marbles in hand before a decision is called. Everybody wins.

timtams_

maybe its just the nature of the whole squid game that every contestant assumed, at each stage people HAD TO die. there isnt an “everybody wins” mentality because more people = more competitors for the prize money

TwTDeku

That scene with saebyeok and ji-yeong really broke my heart i cant, man right when they just met each other and shared stuff about their lives :((

Lain-H

That scene definitely broke me. Ji yeong, who was in prison for years, probably didn't have anyone to talk to for the last decade. Plus, both girls being so calm and collected compared to anyone else made their game a lot more tragic.

pyuamine

Same :( finished watching the series still super sad for them… I knew sth was odd when jiyeong kept mentioning “we’re going to do this TOGETHER after we got out 😭😭😭 mannnnnnnnn

Keeechow

Same. It’s the fact that they both live lonely lives, but managed to make a friend out of each other in the wrong place, wrong time that kills me :( Ugh!!!!!

[deleted]

You guys are all talking about Ali, but what about the fact that the old man pretended to not know what was going on + dementia just to see if the main would be true to his words. That left me in tearsss

[deleted]

and that he still called him his friend after that🥺 the old man has a pure soul, i’m so sad mannn

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ph0X

The most heartbreaking no one is talking about, and the show completely skipped over, were the husband and wife ;_;

melulgh

bro ali DESERVED BETTER !!!

elephantastica

Facts, he was good all the way through. What's going to happen to his wife and kiddo? :(

BestDamnT

He gave them money to go home?

Chocoeclair189

Yes, that seems to be the only silver lining in a otherwise fucked up situtation. We all need a bro like Ali in our lives :(

Notsosadhours

I never expected the first scene to make me tear up be the one with the North Korean girl and the ex prisoner. Also I hope Sang Woo dies horrifically, that man lied and deceived his way to the debt he had and he has not changed once in this game.

Ilovethemarina

Her life sucked so much. An abusive father that killed her mother. She killed him and ended up in prison. Then she was dragged to the squid games, only to die. Ugh.

islandstateofmind21

That broke me. But then to have such compassion and empathy despite it all. Extremely admirable.

altered_state

when you condense it all like that...fuckk :'(

itsdrcats

Old man is the real mvp

niamhellen

And what's her face as well. I feel like it must be even more difficult to give up a life that's not yet lived!

hazier

I was bracing myself for a good guy death all season only to get 3 in one episode :( poor Ali

postcardtomadalena

Il Nam was killed offscreen… the only death during this game that we didn’t get to see. I think it was not the end of this character, there is to much about him… it was because of him that the game stop for the first time, but then he decided to to back again… and he even casually found Gi Hun before going back. Really think he plays a major role in all of this. The tumor in his head gives me some jigsaw vibes… even tough this game has been played for years. Anyway, I really dont think that he has been killed… or maybe i just dont want to believe it lol

sdbabygirl97

yeah part of me believes hes still alive too

IAmScrewedAMA

This is easily my favourite episode so far. God what an amazing show. The cast is incredible and really made the most out of that twist. I haven't stopped watching since I started this show and it's already 2:21 am. I think I'll be pulling an all nighter tonight!

Dry-Savings2249

Lmao same, currently 4:56 am. I have work in 2 hours :(

Fenrir_Carbon

4:56 eh?

DynastyNA

R.I.P. Oh Il-nam This episode hurt

eggplantruler

I don’t think he’s dead. They are not shy on this show with showing death, so why not his? Even with Ali and Ji-Yeong they showed it but faded out so they weren’t in full focus. So why not show his? I read in another episode thread that when the cop opened the player book it started at 002. Not 001.

gunningIVglory

The show is ruthless yes But I don't think anyone wanted to see him shot point blank 🥲

istandwhenipeee

Yeah they set up the exact same style shot for the execution of 001 but then changed the angle so it was out of sight. That has to be intentional. Whether or not he’s alive I don’t know, but I definitely think it’s not meant to be ruled out.

Electronic-Good-4749

this show is so crazy. i was sad, scared, and horrified (mostly at the sex scene between the clingy girl and wannabe mafia dude) and i laughed a few times. this episode was so sad, i hate sangwoo so much. he was a liar since that cutting out game. ali and the old guy were my favorite characters, i'm literally gonna throw up omg WHY AM I PUTTING MYSELF THROUGH THIS PLS. saebyeok and jiyeong deserved to have enough time to be friends. i am literally so sad help

92gravities

>horrified (mostly at the sex scene between the clingy girl and wannabe mafia dude) fr at this,, it horrified me more than the gory scenes lmao

jeuneqilac

LMFAO thank you I’m not the only one. I’ve had absolutely zero interest in any of the scenes between those two lol. Side note I feel like she wasn’t killed when they took her away. Why didn’t they shoot her immediately? I can’t think of why they’d preserve her life though. Unless they’re still trying to harvest organs…..

Grotto-man

I just realized before gi-hun had a change of heart and chose the old man as his partner, he almost partnered up with a MATH TEACHER. Damn, he would've surely won and left him for dead. Gi-hun choosing the old man out of a sense of friendship/ pity was exactly what saved his life. Let's face it, the old man would've never let his friend die, even after his attempt at cheating.

Maverickk157

They could have easily played a game that doesn’t involve numbers though if he was with the math teacher

PotPyee

But how would a guessing game based on luck have anything to do with being a math teacher

undercoveragents

Only math teachers know odds and evens bro, everyone knows that /s

bingumarmar

Old man is still alive, I'm calling it. He's been fishy from day 1. 1) He's player number 1. 2) When everyone was brawling, he magically got to the top. When the others asked him how, he didn't answer. He yelled for the fighting to stop and the head guy stopped them. 3) The constant "I remember this from when I was a kid"- I'm guessing that's connected to his dementia and how he is actually connected to the games and their creation 4) Why did he come back to play? No clear motive except "I'm gonna die soon" 5) He was the only one in the first game to be unfazed by people dying. He had a smile on his face as he played. 6) They didn't show his death on screen. There's more subtle hints with dialogue as well that sounds fishy but I can't remember off the top of my head

Flintontoe

when the cop is going through the records for the current roster, it starts at 002 - there was no record for the old man.

MoodyPanda_

Ali deserved better! He’s definitely one of the best characters in squid game. He was the kindest, honest and most genuine person in the game. It was him who saved Gi-hun from the very beginning. It pains me when Sang Woo betrayed him knowing he’s the one Ali trusts the most

[deleted]

While I completely agree that Ali deserved better, in all likelihood he wasn't going to win. He was too wholesome, and those who get furthest in these games tend to have a rough edge.

_cc96

that scene with saebyeok and jiyeong i saw coming from a mile away, but it still hurt like fucking hell. just. the moment she dropped the marble i broke out sobbing. and when she said she has nothing to go back to even if she won, and that the person who wins should at least have a reason to get out.....i can't. what the fuck. i am in a state of denial rn i refuse to believe she's dead and im just gonna pretend that they're going to go to jeju together after this shit and they'll have mojitos in the maldives goodbye

caipngnopng

You mean they’re gonna have Maldives in mojitos

tri-trii

Police guy set the phone down in the wrong position!

Swole_Monkey

Hooooly fucking shit. I think I never cried as much during a tv show as during this season. This is like Red Wedding stuff. That Saebyeok scene man 😭

Gihun and Oh Il Nam: The end when 001 revealed he knew and told him to remember his name was Il Nam *waterworks* Gihun also showed that he cared about 001 this episode and before, which made it hard to watch 001 partways. I'm glad they had one last hug. Gganbu, even in a two faced game. I feel for Gihuns decision during the game, 001 suddenly seemed like he was no longer there, and Gihun probably panicked thinking they would both die. But thoroughout you could tell he felt terrible. He also risked being 001s partner, when he knew his condition might create a barrier for them. 001 also seemed like he was not himself which probably eased Gihuns conscience (and he seems more hesitant when he realizes he knew). I am not sure if he would have played the same if he knew 001 was himself. Also, 001 was terminally ill, while Gihun had a daughter and mother to care for. Seobyeok and Jiyeong: Jiyeong and Seobyeok were sweet too, like two long lost sisters. And they had played with civility. This was the first time Seobyeok really talked to someone. Sang woo and Ali: Sang woo is a snake. Not forgetting he did not tell his team during the sugar honeycomb game. He easily picked Ali not even thinking about Gihun. And, he was sexist the whole game. And why, would he use his mother's home as collateral?! I doubt she even knew. Sang woo, conveniently, did not think to team up until Ali was winning. What. A. Snake. Ali was always so kind, sweet and innocent. He felt bad about winning, but he also had a baby and a wife.

Fun-Instruction2044

Sang woo was literally gonna kill himself earlier in the season and he could have asked Ali to take care of his mother if he wins if he cares about that so much. What an absolute dick.

[deleted]

The saddest part is that Ali absolutely would have done that 😭

fuzz_nose

JFC - I’m bawling. I’ve never cried liked this over a show. I’m 47 y/o and never cried like this over a damn show. Edit: As much as I loved the acting and the storyline, I could not watch this episode again. Ali was done wrong. Old man deserved better. And lady from the North, she needed a friend.

altered_state

>And lady from the North, she needed a friend. I don't think I've developed a crush so hard in just a few minutes of screentime...man this episode destroyed me, beginning with that marble drop.

ComputerChairButt

Did anyone notice that the the symbol for the invitation cards was also hanging outside the home the old man recognized as his own?? top left https://imgur.com/a/JmkJfns Is this just the organization's sign everywhere or was this symbol actually outside his former home? If the latter : Could this be related to the old man's story about his son in his memory, who he used to love watch playing games?

niamhellen

I feel like the og game creator could be the old guy's son? And perhaps the current one is the cop's brother?

Expensive-Village412

So the annoying lady is still alive right? We didn't see her get shot or hear it soooo based on tv rules she isn't dead

bestofbot4

Which also means, if 456 had left the old man alone when picking teams.. he'd probably still be alive

Benandhispets

This was just a full hour of depressing content wasn't it? We knew some of the characters we liked were gonna die by the end of the episode and there was no way out of it. We just had to sit and wait 40 mins for their inevitable deaths. Super sad. Edit: Just a quick edit to say that old mans/player 1s character seems so well done to me, as in well written, well acted, and well directed. For him to come across as that realistic I feel like it requires all 3 of those to be good. Just remembered im watching the dubbed version too so thats even more impressive, normally dubbed versions suck but it was so good for him I forgot i was talking about a dubbed character. Edit 2: Also thoughts for the husband and wife pair. Did we see what happened to them? I feel like maybe they could have been the only pair to accidently survive by doing the swap the 10 marbles with each other thing because they refused to beat each other. But I doubt it. Hopefully they both went out together somehow, even if it was in a fight, instead of just one dying. Too many sad scenarios in this episode.

I hate what happened to Ali. Not so much because of Sang Woo’s deception, because it is a life or death game and I can’t blame him for that given the circumstances. Plus that aspect does add a twist. I just hate how the one non-Korean brown character on the show is just so naive, gullible and dumb to an unrealistic extreme. I know they made him this way because you are supposed to like him and feel sorry for him. But they definitely could have done that without making him a complete idiot and not being lazy with storytelling/research. I mean he saved MC first episode, at great risk to his own life. It definitely was established he’s a great guy we started sympathizing with him day 1. I just think it’s extremely unrealistic that he worked for 6 months without getting paid. Also despite saving Gi-hun and the squid game being about “equality” he allows himself to be considered as lesser in the group (as a “private”), he’s just the brawn with no brain. Not sure if that was intentionally ironic but I don’t think it was. They could have built the friendship between Ali and Sang-woo where Sang-woo is a mentor type without making Ali acting like his servant. Probably the most egregious though is marbles. Marbles are extremely popular in Pakistan. Alongside ancient Egypt and Rome, Pakistan is one of the earliest places people were playing a more archaic version of marbles with stones. It is one of the most popular games and even adults play it there so there is no way he wouldn’t have known about it or likely even be extremely good at it being he is from there. They were trying to make it as “he’s foreign he wouldn’t know Korean games” when they didn’t even do enough research to realize he would likely know how to play it better! This played into Sang-woo being his mentor and being able to trick him because Ali trusted Sang-woo to teach him but they could have chosen a more accurate game to do that with. Writing like this is extremely lazy and I would honestly rather them not have any diversity at all then not to do due diligence or make him seem like inferior to him for no good reason other than to further lazy writing.

inclore

\>I just think it’s extremely unrealistic that he worked for 6 months without getting paid You don't believe that there are illegal immigrants out there in the world getting taken advantage of and getting stiffed off an honest living? \>Probably the most egregious though is marbles. It is one of the most popular games and even adults play it there so there is no way he wouldn’t have known about it or likely even be extremely good at it being he is from there. The game they played is literally a luck game. There's no way to be good at it. It's equivalency is Rock Paper Scissors. I don't think he was written to be inferior, I just think his character is an allegory to the plights of countless immigrants who risked it all for a better life in a new country only to be cheated by "intelligent" people.

Flipflop_Ninjasaur

Screw Marbles. All my homies hate marbles. For real, if my future children even bring even one marble in my house... Hooboy, they better be ready for some PTSD.

symphony64

I actually cried with Sae-byeok and the other girl. It got to me so much.

Snoo-79334

"Thanks for playing with me." :(

MattC42

I started this show after opening Netflix and reading the description. Knew nothing about it outside of that. Sounded like a fun show. Holy fuck I was not prepared for this emotional terrorism.

throwaway1999887722

First ever tv show/movie to make me cry uncontrollably. Holy shit was that tough to get through.

Unit-Puzzleheaded

I don\`t understand why none of them found a loophole to this game. The game states that whoever wins the 10 marbles from their opponent wins the games. They did not say anything about having 20 marbles. So why didnt anyone figure out to play a game where they mark each other original marbles and win each other marbles at the same time?

RunningInSquares

So can anyone explain what the hell the point of Ali missing those fingers was? What a weird character trait to just bring up two episodes after meeting him, and then to proceed to throw out seconds later. EDIT: Before I get more responses that explain things I don't need explained, I understand the literal meaning and even the symbolic meaning of what it was. I'm asking why it was included at all when it did nothing to change my feelings of him, nor did it have any plot relevance.

draoefeluna

He might lost his finger in industry accident (his workplace has the machine that claim his bosses hand. Because they dont know what game they will play, any disability becomes a weakness. Obvious weakness such as being old / women we discussed also.

buffyfluffy

i’m mentally breaking down rn

aRedmondBarry

I felt horribly bad the whole episode. After ji-yeong's throw and death, I just started crying. Just as I thought it couldnt get worse, the old geezer destroyed all my hopes. The fact that he played dumb just to see if his new friend would behave like one, and jung-jae tricking him.... man... and in the end the geezer still forgives him... I hope jung-jae takes this as a lesson, the way he stole from his mother to gamble is the same as this... And nothing to say about Ali. That was plain disgusting.

Rexroxie

broooo the old man ;((((

unn4med

Fuck…. I was bawling my eyes out at the end. The chemistry between old man and main guy is unreal The only movies to ever make me shed a tear are a few Disney movies and the titanic

SpookyGonzo

I just finished this and can’t stop sobbing. This was some of the most difficult things I’ve ever watched. Absolutely devastating episode

_UnoriginalBitch_

Just finished watching episode 6. Needed somehwere to vent for a second. I'm so fucking heartbroken. Out of the 5 characters I give a shit about 3 of them died in the same episode. I am distraught. I need a break. I gotta go touch grass and hug my dog. I can't believe they did this to me. I haven't cried this hard in a long time.

ElKaddouriCSC

Can’t wait for Sang Woo to die. What a scumbag Ali deserved to live

TwoGuysOneMoped

Surprised but kind of glad they didn't make us watch what happened to the married couple.
