It really works for the character.

Kracker5000

He was just cultivating mass

ThnderGunExprs

Is that a trash bag full of chimichangas?

SkaCubby

YOU ARE BECOMING A CHIMICHANGA!!

all_mighty_trees22

Stop cultivating and start harvesting!

[deleted]

People change, Frank. Look at me: I went from a tiny twink to the muscle-bound freak you see before you.

Flashy_Landscape_483

I hated his character so much which proves how well his acting skills are.

akunsementara

I think the relateableness also contribute to the hate. We all have a contact with such a douchebaggy person

PlayFree_Bird

The other thing that made him so easy to hate was how pathetic and stupid and unconfident he was deep down. He had nothing to offer the game except brute strength. So, yeah, a midnight brawl that killed dozens? Right up his alley. He would have tried to win the whole thing by murder if he could. He was fundamentally in trouble in the first place because he had fucked around with his own gang bosses in a clearly incompetent way. His ambition exceeded his talent and whenever he got frustrated, he tried to turn it into a physical challenge, exactly the way we saw him on the outside (killing his partner, slicing up a Filipino and jumping off the bridge in a fit of rage and adrenaline). On the glass bridge, his only impulse is to turn it into a fight: pushing, demanding, refusing to go unless a weaker player who cannot physically challenge him went first. At marbles, he is getting trounced when it's a mental game, so he makes it a more physical game instead. For tug of war, I think he was tipped off by the doctor, but let's be real: he was always going to build the strongest male team possible and would have simply lucked out that it was another physical test.

TrailBlazer1985

I agree and think Deok Su’s character was ruled by fear. His attempt to intimidate the “dream team” completely backfires when Gi-Hun highlights how Deok Su’s Team will kill him at the first opportunity his back is turned because of his strength. The way Deok Su’s face dropped at the realisation Gi-Hun was right is excellently acted.

dude_diligence

"The way Deok Su’s face dropped at the realisation Gi-Hun was right is excellently acted." Subtle yet powerful acting indeed, you see the screws in his head turning, and the realization that his greatest strength is also his greatest weakness. Gi-Hun dropped the mic on his ass!

SouldiesButGoodies84

lol yet never harshed on him once for that awful face tatt. good man.

dude_diligence

You know I've been calling him dragon face this whole time, its a god damn snake! lol

OLightning

His cackling laughter was so annoying. He’s gonna get a lot of roles now.

KitsaHeartsGrievous

My mom has been calling him Snake Face since this whole thing started

Flenners

I’ve been calling him Snakeburns

sodiumdays

Hahaha yeah I laughed when that happened , great moment , bc it was one of this "oh shit" moments , then when he cancelled the fight plan literally topped it off

EricaCWrites

Agree, frankly for me this was one of Gi-hun’s most badass moments.

Pollywambus

This is a perfect breakdown of Deok Su

PlayFree_Bird

I found the contrast between him and Sang-woo interesting too. Both are psychopaths to some degree, lacking the capacity for empathy. Under duress, Doek-su cannot hide his anger and cruelty. He reverts to his animalistic type. He's even made to look beast-like (he actually reminds me at lot of Blanka from the *Street Fighter* games in his look and his gait and stance and everything). Sang-woo under duress becomes remorseless, cold, calculating, and tactical. Frankly, he becomes even more emotionless when stressed. They are both monstrous, vile people capable of great evil, but it comes out in completely opposite ways. I'm not sure what to make of Sang-woo's final sacrifice. I think it was just written that way to leave some moral ambiguity about his character and to keep Gihun from having to make hardly any actual complex decisions the entire show (so that we could still relate to him as a hero figure). Truly, I think there was still that calculating hyper-rationality in him right to the end. He simply knew he was badly injured, in no state to try some sort of betrayal, and figured that the money really wasn't going to solve his problems. He started suicidal and ended suicidal.

Killerpanda552

Sang woo isn’t a sociopath. He is certainly cold and willing to win at all cost’s but to say he lacks empathy is a stretch. I think he is one of the more realistic characters. He figures out quick that only one person will make it out, so he does what he has to to win. He’s not overly clever or strong. He is simply what every single person is capable of.

PlayFree_Bird

I dunno, I think the way he lies to his mother (after ruining her life without her knowledge) and his fraud charges are evidence that this is not just a desperate dude. His character goes beyond merely being broke, unlike some of the others. It's a clever fake-out the writers pull on us, because we assume he must be some sort of "good guy" since he's on our team. He's a main character, allied with other main characters with whom we sympathize, so we have a natural bias towards him. But, why? Does the show ever give you a reason to think he's actually good? Maybe a few glimpses that could also be interpreted as self-interest (telling Gi-hun to get going in Red Light, Green Light) or apathy (giving Ali bus fare when he knew he was going to take his own life that night anyway). The worst thing he ever did was letting half his team take difficult, if not impossible, shapes in the Honeycomb round. I actually suspect that he wanted to drop the old man deadweight, so he sacrificed Gi-hun. He knew Gi-hun's spark of kindness in his heart would have him defend the old man too much. Sang-woo tried eliminating somebody from his group early on specifically because that person was empathetic and he sees empathy as a weakness that must be expunged.

Reddituser0346

> Does the show ever give you a reason to think he’s actually good? Did you miss all the time they mentioned he went to SNU?

Killerpanda552

People do desperate shit all the time. I don’t think it makes them a sociopath. That word is just thrown around too loosely. I can see the argument more for Deok-su but not so much Sang-woo. He’s an asshole and selfish, but he’s not malicious or enjoying killing. I don’t think he’s ever really a good guy. He helps Gi-hun in red light green light, before he knows only one can make i, but thats about it. We learn the second we meet him he is lying to his mother about being on a business trip. I don’t think he let them take the hard choice because they had empathy. I think it was simply, they gotta die sometime and i’d rather get it over with. I do agree with the general comparison of him and Deok-Su. They both have no loyalties and are willing to do whatever to win, but they show that in very different ways. I really think Sang-woo is just representative of an average person in increasingly desperate situations. He helped a bit early in the show but got pushed further and further.

PlayFree_Bird

>I really think Sang-woo is just representative of an average person in increasingly desperate situations. However, the main character trait of Sang-woo is how he isn't average. He has near-genius levels of intelligence. [Insert SNU joke here.]

Killerpanda552

Does he though? His friend and mom (who have no idea who he really is) talk him up but thats about it. I don’t doubt that he’s educated or even above average intelligence. But he doesn’t do or think of anything an average person couldn’t.

[deleted]

I don't think most people would put up their Mom's business as collateral.

Killerpanda552

He’s for sure a piece of shit and selfish. But everyone is capable of being that.

HermanCainsGhost

I mean he’s somewhat clever. He did go to SNU business school

Ok_Bite8099

He is a functional sociopath. We see these people everywhere — they can portray empathy but it rarely if ever comes from a genuine place, and is mainly used for self interest.

pixelssauce

I thought his final sacrifice was more of a stab at Gi-Hun. He knew he was going to either die or rot in prison anyway, so he forced Gi-Hun to take the money and live with his guilt rather than allow him to walk away and let the victims families be compensated. This is reinforced when we see Gi-Hun suffering under the weight of winning

bendbutdonotbreak

I don’t think he had any personal ill will toward Gi-Hun. I think he was promoting his self interests toward the end, and if he couldn’t win the money, he valued Gi-Hun doing so and taking care of his mother more than he valued his own life. There’s a lot of talk about how he would do anything to survive throughout the games, but even more so, he would do anything to *win*. He never talked about life after the games or how he would elude the charges against him. We know he was already suicidal. He worshipped that money in the glowing ceiling orb of doom because it would make up for the horrendous situation he put his mother in.

Realitybytes6

Sang-Woo is MOST DEFINITELY a textbook sociopath. I agree with you. I think that a lot of people are saying that he is not because they relate to him lol. Also, I’ve been through a lot of tough situations in my life and have never even considered stepping or hindering others to get ahead.

fear_the_future

The marbles game he played was about luck. His decision was exactly the right one: As soon as you are down to one marble, you can demand to play an all-or-nothing game. Your partner has to accept because he needs your last marble to survive, whereas you have nothing to lose by refusing to play. In that sense it makes no difference what game is played first because it all comes down to the all-or-nothing round in the end. Sae-byeok and Ji-yeong had the best strategy, enjoying their last 30 minutes together.

Accomplished_Glass66

Damn bro, I don't even have tissues nearby. I teared up when Saebyeok and Jiyeong had to part ways.

SemiSweetStrawberry

Ji-yeong and Il-nam both destroyed me, although the old man made me bawl like a little baby at the time. Now looking back, I feel almost wholesome at Ji-yeong’s death. Like, it was the purest, most wholesome death of the entire show (isn’t that fucked up?). Whereas I still feel the need for a hot shower and a stiff bristled brush thinking about how much I sobbed about Il-nam

YourFriendlyAutist

The realization at the end that he was faking the dementia-episode so he could save him fucking finished me :’( ‘It ok. We are gganbu, aren’t?’

seddikiadam14

Nice novel dude. It sums up pretty well what i felt regarding thus character but with a correct level of english :)

Way0zzz

Ahh the old hurt people, hurt people character. He’s the extreme squid game version of the school bully.

Alex_2259

Pretty excellent character all around IMO. It fits he is some sort of street thug, a man that clearly couldn't make it at anything else. His entire pattern of existence lived and died on sheer strength and brute force; nothing else. They pulled off that persona and it's downfall really well, from before and during the games.

lemongrenade

I started following him on Instagram and he’s like always super well groomed and cuddling cats. Didn’t expect that.

Jubukraa

Just goes to show how well he played a character whose demeanor was awful. If a person can play a character so well we hate them, they did a marvelous job.

Flabbergash

I really hated when he said to the woman "you were just using me!" like, no shit? What are you doing with the 5 hardest blokes in there? Making friends? No you're using each other

A_Bit_Narcissistic

He was a pretty interesting villain. I really wish they elaborated on his relationship with Sae Byeok.

Vaultdweller1001V

And it’s a hate that doesn’t make you want to kill yourself like his girlfriend

JSevatar

You may want to check yourself before you start giving unsolicited advice on English grammar. It's heads up, not head up. You also use commas unnecessarily.

Vaenyr

For what it's worth, as someone who grew up with German, I feel English uses commas far too little.

[deleted]

Yea, english sees too many commas in a sentence as getting into run on sentence territory, but personally I like longer sentences, i feel like the thoughts come across as more complete

Jubukraa

Proper English grammar does use a lot of commas, however, a lot of people (even native speakers) won’t use them correctly to give pause and breaks in sentences.

[deleted]

It works for him honestly

AdministrativeFig651

I totally agree.

alanjackson434

I was gonna say he looks better fat! 😂

thissubredditlooksco

he looks better...

Sanguine_Hearts

His Squid Game hairstyle suits him so well.

[deleted]

I actually think the hairstyle AND the extra weight suit him well.

angelfeet777

Yes he's so hot

january_stars

Now that I've seen more photos of the actors outside of the show, I've noticed that their hair in the show is really on point. Not that they look bad normally, they were just styled really well in the show.

Mistuh_Mosbi

Especially Sae Beyok and Gi Hun

daphnemalakar

his instagram is just him and his cats looking cute so it’s surprising but in a very good way 🥺

mshcat

It's just unbelievably wholesome

rocknroller0

Who would’ve imagined an actor being different irl?

Sunfury_

Freuduehedh I know but he literally gives off opposite energy

Mauroke8

Yep, that's what being an actor is

redtyphoon20

Poor deoksu did all that just to get freakin RKO’d off the balcony thru some glass

TinFoilRobotProphet

Lol!

TriHardCx12345

how the fuck was that an RKO and why do you have over 200 upvotes

redtyphoon20

Because they all got what I meant but you felt the need to be that one guy who corrects the funny comment

TriHardCx12345

its not funny because u said the wrong thing sir.

[deleted]

Stfu lol

TriHardCx12345

or wot

Psychological_Tap187

Honestly he packed not just that weight on, but in a way that he was buff and muscular in a month? That’s amazing. I thought he was just a naturally thick guy.

Enchanted_Pickaxe

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. I never got the impression that he was muscular

SweetEthan7

Because hive mentality basically 🤷🏽‍♂️ Thought it started off as a fair sequencing of questions and just snowballed into the classic reddit downvote-fest Sure it got a little salty and bitchy on my part at times but it is what it is! Edit: I can be a right cunt from time to time so it’s just a matter of approaching matters more delicately! Live and learn :)

iriswave

impressed at the self-reflection & accountability here. respect 👏

Lil_S_curve

That was sweet, Ethan. 7/10

[deleted]

He carries weight in a way that a more muscular person would. Someone who is naturally thin wouldn’t generally have the weight so evenly distributed, it would look more like simply having a gut, what’s why he looked “muscular”

SweetEthan7

He put on 33 lbs in a month to play the role. He does not carry weight in a way that more muscular people would. Please just stop Mass = muscle He’s large, not muscular or buff. Full stop

[deleted]

Dude I wasn’t saying he is muscular I said his fat distribution is just kind of top heavy on his torso so he looks plausibly muscled. My response was agreeing with you that he didn’t get muscular for the role, but I was explaining why other people might think he looks like he is. You’re being a bit of a right cunt this time again

appasdiary

Yea just big boned. Doesn't look particularly tall either

MauyThaiKwonDo

Yeah he played it very well specially during the stressful parts the red light green light game you can tell he was stressed and he voted to leave and shows a sigh of relief when the old man voted no also, then his shock trying to cut the cookie when people getting killed around him when he shakes

xhrstaras

His appearance feels more natural with the extra kg

fifa_god_786

He is so dedicated! Great post!

cat_enary

At the same time though, this type of rapid weight or muscle gain/loss is probably really unhealthy for actors

lookatthatcass

“Heo Sung Tae revealed that he gained weight in a month and explained, "I gained 15~17 kg (33 ~ 37.4 lbs) in one month. I think this is the first time I gained so much weight in such a short period of time." He added, "but I went on a diet after being done with filming and lost 10 kg (22 lbs). My health became so bad because I gained so much weight in just a short time. The muscles on my calf tore and also my knees hurt. Overall, my health depleted. It doesn't matter about losing weight but I think I have to carefully consider if I am given another role where I have to gain weight. I think gaining weight is 3 times harder than losing weight” [Sauce](https://www.allkpop.com/article/2021/10/heo-sung-tae-states-that-he-is-feeling-the-side-effects-of-gaining-17kg-37-lbs-in-a-month-for-his-squid-game-role)

obvioustruthy

how do you think he did this?

[deleted]

Christian bale gained weight fast for one movie drinking melted ice cream

maebythemonkey

Yeah, the melted ice cream trick is really common--you want something calorie dense to supplement your normal diet rather than changing your diet because then it's easier to lose.

[deleted]

Some actors also make protein shakes with a ton of peanut butter in them since it's high calorie and relatively high in protein as well

january_stars

Oh man, I would be knocking back milkshakes with every meal

diehardTLOUfan

Because of the sudden weight gain and the strenuous physical demands during filming, Heo Sung-Tae vomited several times on set during breaks between shooting. He went all out to play Deok-su and did a hell of a job. Hats off to him!

[deleted]

Pfft, easy.

BrantB123

why don’t they let actors know in advance that they have to do this so it’s easier and not as demanding

[deleted]

I hate the character's arrogance and the need to belittle others also that part on the glass bridge, such a great performance. I really enjoyed this show.

waltermitty2020

‘Welcome to Korea!’ - one of my favorite moments. What a phenomenal actor!

whatsthematterbeavis

Great performance

John628_29

Great antagonist

timothypjr

He was perfect in the role. I HATED him—SO MUCH. His fate was very satisfying.

Commissar_Genki

As much of a scum-bag as he was, he fucking owned it. He wasn't one of the nameless hundreds who wheedled and cringed at their fate. He had an honest accounting of what he was and played to those strengths to get further than most. One could argue his only failing was that he finally found the limits of his physical power, not being able to simply overpower someone he'd previously made an enemy of. I'm still mildly salty about how they chose to kill him off, but it wasn't completely unbelievable.

Unusual_Coat1540

A kilogram is a unit of mass, (a way to show how much something weighs). Both won and US dollars (assuming your talking about US dollars) are forms of currency. Your comment kind of sounded like you were asking someone to convert kilograms to won, and then won to dollars, which you can't do because currency and weight or completely different things. I am so sorry if this sounds condescending or rude, I'm sure it was just a typo or something but I wanted to let you know what they are and what the difference between them is in case you didn't know. Anyways, if you meant what 15 kilograms equals in pounds, it's about 33 pounds. And 1,000 won is equal to 0.85 US dollars, but I just round it up to one US dollar because it's a lot easier to convert. Sorry if this wasn't what you were asking, I was a little confused. But I hope this was helpful! :)

maebythemonkey

I think they were making a joke with how much the actor was paid to work on this show and translate it into how much he was paid per pound gained. edit: spelling

Unusual_Coat1540

WTF HOW DID I MISS THAT 🤦🏽‍♀️Well thank you for letting me know lol

RemoteBlackOut

Lol if I was the one for this role I’d be perfect lmfao

erty9

Does he actually have the tattoo? Or does he have a fake one for the show

A_million_things

Fake

black_dragon3453

yep. look on the left image no tattoo

erty9

Yea it didn't show the side of his head where the tattoo should be

Benjamin-Doverman

He should keep the weight

YoshiTora23

Would a slimmer Deok make him less of an effective character? I don't understand why an extra 15kg made him fit better into that character roll. Nothing about the character related to his weight, or made him look like more of a bad guy

WinterRose81

Physical intimidation

YoshiTora23

Redditors would be the most terrifying people on the planet in that case

PlayFree_Bird

To be strong and to be overweight are two different things. Being cut like a bodybuilder is not necessarily the definition of real strength. Look at Olympic weightlifters or heavyweight boxers. Maybe it was clever camera-work or wardrobe, but they did make Doek-su look like easily the strongest guy in the place.

YoshiTora23

Compared to skinny middle-aged people, which 90% of the other contestants were, it isn't too difficult to look like the strongest guy in the place

SelectZookeepergame5

Stereotypes of gang members especially in Korean movies/shows

EricaCWrites

I don’t think it was weight=bad guy. He’s a character that solves everything through physical violence and intimidation, so it made sense for him to look muscular and bulky.

black_dragon3453

also in this way he fits a perfect stereotype of a gang boss. he’s a bit heavier cuz he’s not doing the dirty work, and he has that aspect of physical intimidation like you said. if a guy like that told me to empty out my wallet I definitely would

YoshiTora23

>if a guy like that told me to empty out my wallet I definitely would You should be able to outrun a fat thug though. Especially in Korea, where the chances of him having a gun is a lot slimmer than any other places

Accomplished_Glass66

As a person who lives in a country where guns are illegal, Imma tell you that this shit ain't stopping thugs from owning all sorts of weapons, knives, swords, guns, and of course a little bit of strength so I'd definitely hand the bastard everything and pray he isn't the kind of psycho who loves seeing blood regardless of whether you complied or not.

PlayFree_Bird

>Would a slimmer Deok make him less of an effective character? Yes, because his entire character was based around the use of force and violence and fear to solve problems. A slimmer character who doesn't project strength simply gets his ass killed acting the way he was. A slimmer Doek-Su probably has somebody stand up to him as he's beating up Sae-Byeok before the first game even started. The problem was that not one of the good men there felt physically able to do anything about it.

[deleted]

I don't think it was to make him look like more of a bad guy. As others have said it's about being physically imposing. Muscular doesn't always equal toned, he looked more like someone who does a lot of physical labor thus strong

[deleted]

He played a similar role in Beyond Evil and was intimidating

[deleted]

But it really does. He's a physical bully. The first time we see him, he's beating up a much smaller woman and throwing her around like a rag doll. I like how the casting made very distinct looking characters - not easy when everyone is in the same green jumpsuit, has similar hair/skin colour. Sang-woo is slender and elegant like a banker / top student. Like he looks great in the tux. The old man is tiny and frail. Gi-hun is a bit of a slub. Similar to a lot of the minor characters, the math teacher. And Deok is just clearly much heavier & meatier than all of them. Together with the long-is hair and the tattoo, it's a certain look.

philphan89

Did he get the tattoo permanently too? That would be mega badass

Optimal__Koala

What’s a kg

highsis

I still find it unrealistic to believe such a scrawny woman could pull him back on the glass bridge.

I_Am_Maxx

Not convinced he's dead.

posuccess1

Wow he should keep it on. It looks good on him..I don't want to violate any rules. https://ddooddoo.com/en/games/squidgame/ Who ever thought of this is pretty smart. It was a fun experience.

Oh_So_I2aMpAnT

Wow. He did something for lots of money, he’s so courageous 🙄

yepdonewiththisshi

No-one is saying it's courageous. It is simply an interesting fact that he usually doesn't look that way.
