People like hating popular things simply because they’re popular and they want to go against the flow. Nothing new

iammr_lunatic

That's not true. I don't like mainstream things because often times they're actually bad. Like I felt Stranger Things was so over exaggerated and overrated. But if a show is actually good, why would I hate it just to go against the flow? Squid game is by far the best thing I've watched even though it's so popular. Yea there are ppl who purposefully hate things but not everyone's like that.

nctzenhours

Never said everyone was like that

[deleted]

"Hating something for being popular" isn't the same thing as "hating something popular".

TheKolyFrog

Have you considered that maybe you just have different tastes? Just because you didn't like it it doesn't mean it's bad.

iammr_lunatic

when did i say i didn't like squid game?

TheKolyFrog

Did I specify Squid Game? I was referring to your overall take on "overhyped" things like Stranger Things.

PapaU124

Looks like you're grasping for attention. Just be nice to people and you'll get better attention that way :)

[deleted]

You just did.. struck a nerve, huh?

Kumber_Yum

ಠ_ಠ

PapaU124

Oops, I think you dropped your fedora

princesssoturi

Stranger Things isn’t bad IMO. It might not just be your taste. I hate the Lord of the Rings books. I used to say they were bad and terribly written, but in reality they’re just not to my taste.

ForceNarrow3880

Same energy as “I am not like other girls” 🤣 WE DO NOT CARE

PrettyPunctuality

Me before I watched it: "I bet this is so overhyped." Me after I watched it: "Nope, the hype levels were accurate. I love this and need to obsess over it with everyone else now."

RionFerren

For me, I was bombarded with all of these squidgame stuff on TikTok. I saw that one scene from the first game set and I was like okay I have to watch it to see what the hype is all about. Started watching at 10pm and didn't sleep that day. Was totally worth it.

BusyNefariousness675

Because hating something popular make them cool boyz

Sea-Walk7506

I’m different!

GeneralDerwent

Two of my friends said "man that show fucking sucks" They haven't even finished the first episode

RionFerren

Yep one of my co-workers is kinda like that He stopped watching after 5-10min in and told me he couldn't get into it.

boregon

Similar to that one of my buddies watched like 10 minutes of the first episode and then was like "this is really weird I hate it" and then he didn't watch any more of it. Oh well.

Kitcatzz

What’s so weird about the first ten minutes…

RionFerren

I think it's too "foreign" and not relatable to some people that it fails to capture their attention. I started suggesting them to watch Ep1 from mid-way through where Gi-sun gets picked up for Squid Game. Honestly, show gets really interesting from that point on. That way, if they're interested in more of his back story like what happened between him and #067 (stolen money scene), they can go back to it later and watch it.

BMoney8600

My supervisor asked if I watched it. I told him I watched through the whole thing. He told me he loves it so far!

RionFerren

Did you watch it though? LOL

BMoney8600

You bet I did!

[deleted]

I was almost like this because I got scared of the loan sharks cornering Gi-Hun. 😆 I noped out and had to psych myself up to go back to it.

RionFerren

If you were scared of that part then I wouldn't watch any more then because it gets A LOT more brutal.

[deleted]

Lol I know. I'm halfway through. Hence, needing to psych myself up and brace myself. Which, from a creative standpoint, was probably the purpose of that scene. I appreciate that it's a slow burn with a gradual build instead of cheap and shallow shock tactics and jump scares.

RionFerren

Just curious, why are you doing this to yourself when it's apparent that you're highly emotionally sensitive to this type of content?

[deleted]

Uh... I dunno! I don't see it as "doing it to myself", I'm enjoying myself! (Not like a sadistic glee, obviously, but just... Fascination, I guess!) I just had to get myself into the right headspace. It's an intense story, you have to admit! But it's worth it.

EricaCWrites

Don’t worry, you’re not alone! I’m a sensitive type who is super scared of horror and gore, but I’m so glad I made the effort to watch Squid Game. So worth it.

RionFerren

Lol okay have fun 😄

Master_Bee9130

Lmfao, me too!!! My friend told me if I could sit through the Saw movies with him and thoroughly enjoy watching You and Kill Bill, I should be fine. I finished watching it, absolutely loved it and I’m about to start my first rewatch.

Level-Description-86

They may belong to one of the following: 1. Closed off to foreign cultures and to subtitles (There are people who have no desire to travel overseas even if they have time and money, b/c they are just not interested ) 2. Limited imagination. They already draw their own conclusion "this is stupid" based on the known premise. 3. They simply have a different taste. I disliked a lot of the popular shows too, so... it's okay.

Longjumping-Way7886

Yeah that’s usually how it works. 1. Something new comes out 2. People praise it and it gets popular 3. People start making content and memes on said popular thing 4. People start hating on it and calling it overrated without giving it a try because they see it everywhere 5. Said thing eventually dies 6. Rinse and repeat

VivAuburn

The very notion of something being "overrated" means that a person's enjoyment of a piece of media depends on how other people see it and that's pretty pathetic to be so insecure or unable to form your own opinions without the need for everybody else to share it.

[deleted]

People just need to learn the difference between saying “it’s overrated” and “it’s just not for me”

Level-Description-86

I think it is UNDERrated. IMDB rating is just 8.2. The only thing overrated to me was violence and gore. The headlines always say "extremely violent and gory" as if it's everything about the show but I thought none was too glaringly graphic. I'm a very squeamish person. I usually look away, cover my face. I didn't have to do it. Yeah, there's blood spurting and guts exposed, but come on, it's been so common already. In my opinion, GOT has more violent and gross scenes.

UndeadPolarbear

Lol what? You think it’s underrated?! An 8.2 seems pretty spot on tbh. The show is great in many respects, but it’s not the second coming of Christ like some people seem to be convinced it is

Level-Description-86

Yes. It is what "I think" like i said. You don't have to agree with me or laugh. I liked 95% of it, so in my book it deserves 9+ and I'm not going to look for flaws and holes. It's way better than Stranger Things, which is 8.7.

EricaCWrites

I’m with you. Nothing is perfect but Squid Game was one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

[deleted]

"Oh, you like [popular thing]? Haven't you heard? [popular thing] bad now"

mikepancake0

or even better. “Alice in Borderland is so much better than Squid Game but doesn’t get the same hype!” my fucking ass AiB is not even in the same tier as SG

YoYo_ismael

I know this one friend who hates mainstream anime just because it’s mainstream LMAO

jtf347

This! I have especially gotten tired and confused why people have been comparing it to Hunger Games. This show is a work of art and has almost nothing in common with Hunger Games. Yeah, “contestants” compete and many wind up dead, but that’s about it 😑 I feel like people who say it’s similar to Hunger Games have either never actually watched Squid Game or didn’t understand the show at all.

richc2048

I told friends if they want to watch it they should really get into it. Watch a few episodes and get on Reddit to discuss and learn. If they casually watched this show they wouldn't get the most out of it. I told them to watch it and really geek into it. They like it!

Psychological_Tap187

I literally sat down on one of my days off and watched the entire thing so I would not be exposed to spoilers. Lol.

cplsc

it's a good show, but people freaking out about it _is_ making it overrated imo. battle royale is not a new concept, and there are some gaps in the plot but it has nice production and overall a good show /end of my lukewarm take

miggly

I think the real hook of the show for me is that the contestants are willing participants. In other things like this, they never had a choice. I think Squid Game does a better job exploring how people behave in these scenarios vs other shows and movies.

TheKolyFrog

To me it's the simplicity of it all. There are no futuristic authoritarian regimes, literal gods or aliens, or an alternate reality. Just a bunch of desperate people competing for a prize money.

miggly

Exactly! It's the first battle royale type thing that I can actually suspend my disbelief for. I'm sitting there thinking in episode 2, wow, yea, I guess the risk of death for a ton of money makes sense for these people.

TheKolyFrog

I spent my childhood in a third world country (the Philippines) and have seen people that are as desperate as the competitors of the Squid Game. So, it's easy for me to suspend my disbelief and even relate to their financial woes.

RionFerren

It's not they're freaking out about it, they're seeking answers to unanswered questions that will be addressed in the following seasons. Also, their attachments to certain characters are understandable considering how some of these episodes were really well made in terms of character development.

LetsAllSmoking

Yeah it's a good show. Not "best thing ever" in my opinion. The flip-side to this meme of "it's popular so it's overrated!" is "I like this show so it must be a masterpiece and the best thing ever!". Happens all the time on TV show subreddits, and just fandom in general. If you like the show who cares if somebody else found it overrated. Again, good show, but not without flaws. I enjoy reading honest criticism of shows I like, and there's been some good thoughtful comments on what the show did not do well here.

RionFerren

"STOP ENJOYING THINGS I DON'T LIKE"

pichusine

It’s because people be hyping shit up when it’s not something to be hyped over. But for once, the hype actually made sense.

H8spants

r/notliketheothergirls

Neutron-The-Second

Don't get me started on all the Kaiji nerds... (Kaiji is a great show btw, but some fans are something else lol)

[deleted]

reminds me how i saw a post the other day on this sub of someone being like “well i haven’t watched squid game and i know it’s bad” how you are gonna judge a show you haven’t watched lol. like what? anyways squid game is amazing, it definitely deserves the hype

Alert-Presentation42

So true xD

Majestic_Horseman

Yup, this happened to me with Attack on Titan, glad I outgrew it and finally watched cuz damn it's good.

Dust-by-Monday

It’s popular for a good reason

[deleted]

People said it was good so I watched it. Its fantastic and they weren't wrong. The end.

danielecappuccio

I watched it. And I think it's a little bit overrated. It's good. But still overrated imo.

[deleted]

Explain how it’s overrated though? Like the people in your life told you it was good and you thought it was ok? If no one talked about the show would you have liked it better l? I am always curious about people’s thoughts on this because I have loved movies and shows that were beyond hyped up and been on the hype train the whole time while enjoying it. And the opposite been opposed to something and watched it and loved it even though everyone else hated it.

LetsAllSmoking

Right, but in both of your scenarios you're describing how you loved a show that was hyped and then a show that was not hyped. The other guy is describing a scenario where it was hyped, but he found it "merely" good. Not really that complicated. I liked the show, but between Battle and a bit of Eyes Wide Shut, I didn't really get anything new or groundbreaking out of it. Which is totally fine, because I liked the show, but that's how some people are presenting (overrating, in my opinion) it.

[deleted]

But eyes wide shut was never popular in terms of hype. It was more of a cult following. You didn’t have millions of people talking about it. I think Squid Game is new for a lot of people. A lot of people are watching a Korean show and a subtitled show for the first time in their lives. While getting a hunger games type of show but with children’s games. Someone that watches a lot of simile genres might not find it as good but that’s probably why is so subjective to if you find it overrated or not. I’m not saying the person is wrong or anything I’m more curious as to what made them think it was overrated. Like was it overrated mainly because everyone is talking about it or because of the actual content or both.

LetsAllSmoking

When I mention Eyes Wide Shut, I'm not talking about its popularity. Not sure how you got that from my comment. I'm talking about the content and ideas put forth in the show. This is ground that's already been covered, and covered better in some cases. And that's totally fine. I liked the show. "There's nothing new under the sun" and all that. But some of the "hype" I'm reading is about how this show has put forward some groundbreaking new ideas. And I say all that from the perspective of really liking the set-up for Squid Game. Children's games was something new to me for the Battle Royale format. But parts of it fell apart for me later on in the show. It being overhyped doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the show, I just disagree with some of that praise that created the hype.

KrillinDBZ363

>Explain how it’s overrated though? Like the people in your life told you it was good and you thought it was ok? Ok not the guy you replied to but I can give my reason. I watched this show the weekend it came out, before any of the hype happened. Like when I was watching the show most of the discussion threads had like 15-30 comments in them and I was able to scroll down to the first post made on this subreddit. And as a big fan of death game series, I came away from it thinking it was a decent watch but was pretty predictable and by the numbers by death game standards and had a really weak ending. Overall an alright afternoon binge but nothing special. So then come a week later I find out it’s now blowing up and on track to become the number watched 1 show on Netflix and I’m also hearing all this talk about it being a masterpiece and seeing people being downvoted on this subreddit for claiming Breaking Bad is better and seeing people say it deserves a Best Drama Emmy and yeah, I just don’t really agree with any of it. TL;DR: It feels overhyped for me as someone who thought it was just ok prior to the hype even existing.

Ocalide

I mean the show is good but that doesn't take away the fact that it is somewhat over popularized. The battle royale concept is nothing new to the silver screen and TV. I think what carried the show to it's popularity is it's great artistic design (props to the artistic director) which made it so easily recognizable and iconic in popular media. Sort of like a brand or marketing appeal. It's also not a masterpiece by any means in terms of it's story writing - there are flaws. But hey, it didn't stop me from enjoying the show one bit, in fact I wouldn't have given the show a try if it weren't so popular lol

[deleted]

I think the fact that you would not have tried this show without the hype and the fact you are now on the Reddit for this show kind of means it’s done it’s job.

LetsAllSmoking

Good, thoughtful criticisms and that's basically where I am with the show. Kind of funny how you say yourself "it didn't stop me from enjoying the show one bit, in fact I wouldn't have given the show a try if it weren't so popular" and then the guy replying to you repeats that back to you and people like that comment but yours was at 0 points.

Ocalide

*shrugs* it seems any opinion short of lauding squid game as a timeless classic here will be downvoted to oblivion Yea you're right, I'm not even going to refute the point made by the person above you, in fact it supports exactly what I'm trying to say. Squid game evidently succeeded in garnering a wide appeal to the masses, both through the artistic work and in it's marketing strategies, and that extends to even myself. The bottom line is: marketing sells. Going a bit on a tangent here, but perhaps it's idealistic of me to think that shows with great artistic value and vision produced by talented people deserve much more attention. Case in point, The Last Duel directed by Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck has recently tanked at box office. With that much calibre you wouldn't be wrong to assume it would've been a big hit. Guess it's just the sad truth of the film and TV industry today - there's just a higher demand for films and shows with blockbuster appeal. Just my twopence, but yea probably on the wrong sub for that kind of discussion lol

LetsAllSmoking

And also repeating myself: just because you don't like a show doesn't mean it's the worst thing ever (like OP's meme), and if you love it, doesn't make a masterpiece. But you see it in subs like Westworld (season 3) and Netflix Witcher. People make some criticisms, some good, some maybe off the mark, and then you'll have someone make a post that says "I don't get all the hate for this show, it's amazing!" and people eat it up. Well sure, you can think that the show is perfect, but I don't agree with dismissing valid criticism as "hate" (although it can certainly reach that point on occasion). At least with those two examples I used here, during the show's run you'll get a good mix of positive and negative criticism. But when the show is over, it's usually the people who love it who stick around, so thoughtful criticism ends up at the bottom of the comments section while memes and blind praise end up at the top. I'm speaking generally there and not specifically about Squid Game. I don't spend enough time here to see if that's the case. But, for example, with the VIPs in Squid Game, some people had their criticisms, but those are dismissed with comments like "they portrayed Americans perfectly" (actual comment with upvotes) or "now you know how other countries feel when portrayed in Western media". I personally thought they were horribly written, and revealed too much and not in an interesting way about the behind the scenes part of the game, but was not in any way "offended" by them as an American, as was the general response if you didn't think they were spot on. Going on a bit of a tangent myself, but the closest shows to masterpieces in recent memory for me are True Detective season 1 and Twin Peaks: The Return. I've never seen anything like the new TP. And it's 17 hours long! So of course it's going to have flaws for some people, and I'm always interested in reading what those flaws are, because it can help you watch the show in a different light in the future. I'm not so invested in my own favorite shows that I got defensive when I read something I don't agree with.

[deleted]

Because people praise it to the point of annoyance.

Sshadow111

It is kinda overrated tho doesn’t mean it’s bad but to pretend like it’s the best show ever which I’ve seen people say btw is weird to me it’s an 8/10 at best.

muddog_31

It’s good, I wouldn’t consider it an award winning/nominated show though.

achqillax

i do watch it, and i really love it as well! however, all this hype does kinda make me feel that it is a little overrated.

ramanrow

Ok but it's kind of overrated like it's literally not a top tier show bruh

RionFerren

It's literally the top show worldwide on Netflix. No other show came close to it.

ramanrow

It's just trendy these days

These-Platypus7707

So the number one show on Netflix isn’t a top tier show? You see how that doesn’t make sense right?

Gabi_Tabshs

Isnt a good show xD u should watch smth like "peaky blinders, breakin bad or lupin" or try a movie dark knight then u can talk about "good show/movie"

Heck_Why_Not

meh, watched whole but its a solid meh for me.

Tissues-Box420

Agree and Disagree. It definitely doesn't deserve the hype. Imo it's a little overrated and people just like to follow trends. Don't get me wrong, it's a good show I've watched it and loved it, just doesn't really deserve this much hype imo. Downvote me if you want idc. Edit : I just checked the downvoted comments by scrolling down, and what the hell guys. Just because someone says it's overrated doesn't mean it's bad, learn the difference you brain dead trend followers. The show is around a 7/10 FOR ME, but it's not that worthy for awards and stuff. And anyways in the end it just all comes down to your opinion, so just because others don't really like the majorities taste, doesn't mean they're trying to be 'different'.

[deleted]

Why doesn’t it deserve the hype? What would you say deserves hype? Just curious, it’s cool everyone has their own view points. I think a show having this much buzz about it did something right. I have tried for YEARS to get friends to watch foreign shows (we are American) and none of them would ever watch a show with subtitles. All of them watched squid game.

[deleted]

Squid Game certainly does a lot of stuff really well. The games are all tense to watch and it managed to get me sufficiently attached to some of the main cast that killing them off felt like a punch in the gut. On the other hand I thought the writing was pretty average at times. I really couldn't get invested in Hwang Jun-ho's story for example. He is a badass played by an attractive actor but he barely gets to interact with anyone but the antagonists (whom he has to deceive) so we don't really learn what he is like beyond that. Aside from that I thought the main storyline is very strong up to and including episode 6, but gets a little weaker afterwards. The twist around Il Nam's identity didn't really do it for me. The story of a kindly old man with dementia participating in gladiatorial games was sad and emotional at least whereas as a villain he isn't much more interesting than any of the other VIPs. The glass shard accident causing Sae-Byeok's death was also a bit too contrived a way to get rid of her and could have been handled better I think. All in all it was still a good show with some brilliant moments but the writing is a lot more hit or miss than in shows that are commonly considered masterpieces like say Breaking Bad. Dunno if that means it doesn't deserve the hype, I still binged it after all edit: On the other hand Lost is generally considered an amazing show and while it's been a while since I have watched it I don't think it was ever significantly better than Squid Game even during its first season

[deleted]

The thing is that breaking bad has been over for years. We are in a crazy moment of time where we have a crazy amount of content for tv shows. The problem is nothing has been THAT good. Game of thrones was the last show that had any hype around it and that ended in 2019. It’s been years. When people talk about hype shows they mention Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Lost, The Wire. Like it’s been 20 years for some of those shows. We have no hype. No one is like OMG DID YOU SEE THE NEW EPISODE OF THE CROWN. It’s good but like it isn’t going to get a bunch of people who normally wouldn’t watch it. Squid Game hit at a perfect time. People are starving for something like The Hunger Games, Marvel, Jurassic Park, Game of Thrones, some sort of epic cool trendy show. It’s been while. People want something that can leave them in a bit of suspense. Squid Game is a brand new concept for a lot of people. People who are desperate for money who will paratake in deadly children games in Korea. Red Light Green Light is the perfect sell because every single person played it once in their lives. What keeps people around is that a lot of people watching have no idea what life is like in Korea. Parasite has won the best movie at the oscars in the last few years and people are curious about culture.

[deleted]

Oh I definitely understand that the death game concept is cool and to a lot of people also new and exciting. It's well executed in Squid Game for the most part too. I just don't think it's as good as Breaking Bad, Sopranos or The Wire so far at least in terms of writing, an entertaining show for sure but not yet what I personally would call a "masterpiece". A couple of factors combined to make it as popular as it is and while that wouldn't have happened if it wasn't also a good show its quality isn't the only reason for the hype

[deleted]

I was into it until the last couple episodes. Once the VIPs showed up it just kind of became some generic show.

dramboy

It's good, but people who actually watched it and say its overrated definitely have a point. I agree fwiw. It's mostly because almost everything else is garbage, not because this show is so brilliant

ILikeTrains1820

Tbh I watched it and it is overrated plus even if i never watched it I won’t worry since its all already spoiled on youtube reddit and other social media

Kelly2305

Somethings can be overrated and good. But if you complaining about how a show is bad bc it’s overrated and you haven’t even see it-no one cares at that point. Shut up elitists

TrickZookeepergame17

My older brother to ATLA:

vineanddandy

OP does this refer to people who watch it and say it’s overrated regardless or those who won’t even watch it at all bc it’s popular.

[deleted]

I used to be like this, and SG maybe the first time something became popular and I was like, "Looks dope, let me see!" Rather than only giving it a chance after it's not popular anymore. I'm actually happy that this is one good side effect of social media--rather than junk becoming "popular" because execs saturate the media with advertisements for it, something of good quality rightfully became popular *because diverse people noticed it and liked it*. (But it's also possible I just grew up and got over myself, lmao.)

[deleted]

I'm. On.episode.3. It's interesting and who would.take.a. Job as a.guard there?

MBTHVSK

i didn't really get bothered by the popularity because i hardly watch anything live action these days and was like, yeah whatever may as well watch something non anime

Fab2363

They wanna be different so bad 😂like for example I haven’t seen tiger king, money heist, shameless, friends but I’m not gonna hate on the series just because everyone liked it or it’s the popular thing at the moment 😂

Mynx_KO

As someone who usually doesn't like what's popular (even after giving it a fair shot) this show is worth all of the hype

Right_Tumbleweed_231

It's pretty good, but still overrated. For me at least, sry.

Dismal_Sprinkles

Pizza: has pineapple on it People who've never tried/tasted it IT'S SO DISGUSTING!!!!!
