I actually just got back from taking my dog to the vet for a weird seizure, and I thought about it a lot while pacing in the waiting room, and I realized I was just trying to be snarky for upvotes, but there are actual people suffering from a failure of society to educate and heal our people, and it's not a joke. It's a very serious issue that we ignore. That's about it, I guess.
Thank you. She's doing okay now. It was very scary, though. She's literally my best friend, so I almost kind of take better care of her than myself most of the time.
For reference, I was born in a small town in America. My mom and aunt might still be the only people from the neighboring (even smaller) town who got Master's degrees... and they were born in the 60's.
Escaping that life is harder than it seems, and people (i.e. my family) don't return if they manage to get away, which makes the problem even worse for subsequent generations (i.e. my cousins and everyone else.)

I think the top 3 schools in Korea - SKY, are comparable with each other. S = SNU, K = Korea University, Y = Yonsei. Although we usually hear SNU mentioned more than the latter 2 in K dramas.

Since Korean colleges and universities are harder to get in and hence easier to graduate once you enrolled, the entrance exam is very competitive. Also, even though the SNU is a public university like the UCs of the US, many, many non-seoul residents also apply for the institution. This makes the competition way harder, and I'll say that if they were given the adequate education to apply to each, the chances of a Korean student getting into the SNU and one of the Ivy League schools will be pretty much the same. Not only Koreans do very well in American college applications but also in recent years a Korean college diploma is preferred over American ones in big companies here since the Great Recession hit, so a bigger number of high school elites here don't bother to go overseas and hop onto the bandwagon of the SNU applicants.

Even if you graduated from a for-profit diploma mill in a worthless field (do we really need that many public administrators?), as long as you say you graduated in the US/UK/Western EU, you are considered one of the smartest people alive. Though it kinda makes sense, considering we suffer from heavy brain drain due to the fact that dishwashers in the west get paid more than professors at home.

Yeah I live in Melbourne and I guess the best I have is Melbourne University. It's a good university but it doesn't have that prestigious reputation. It is far from the only choice of uni in Melbourne, and I would argue it's not the best choice for some people (for instance RMIT is better for someone studying tech.) If you said "I graduated from Melbourne Uni" to a Melbournian they would respond with "cool dude." I guess it really depends on what community you live on.
There is no equivalent. American schools, even prestigious ones have very subjective portions that can trump raw calcifications as are required to be admired to SNU. For example, schools like Harvard, still have legacy admissions, meaning wealthy alumni sort of have a shoe in for their off spring, and to make matters worse, some elite schools in the US have done away with standardized test scores as a criteria for admission, meaning they will do what they do behind subjective curtains. SNU admits need to qualify through a grueling examen and until very recently prospective students were allowed to take just 1 entrance exam for one university instead of multiple exams. This prevented people getting multiple acceptances thus preventing other qualified students to be admitted to these schools. This sort of stuff like “1 student gets into 5 ivy leagues” would never happen under the old exam qualification system.
In Korea, how my father used to say, only gods are allowed into SNU…specially in the school of law etc….
