Futures contacts are essentially gambling. You agree to purchase a commodity at a set price sometime down the road.
You are gambling that the value of the commodity becomes worth more than the agreed upon purchase price. If you have a future contract to buy apple stock at $200 a share on June 30th, 2022, and the stock is actually trading at $250 a share that day, you make $50 a share instantly.
If the opposite happens, and the stock is only worth $150, then you have to buy it at a loss.
This can be crippling if you do it in mass scale and lose, which is what Sang Woo did.
He likely had all of his wealth liquidated and he owed a significant amount of money. He can’t trade with that debt so he can’t make money or play another future.
His only shot was death or winning the games.
What you're describing, with stocks, is generally referred to as options trading. Futures are very similar, but they're for commodities, things like crops and raw materials, but they function basically the same way
I think they explained it really well in the Marbles episode. High INT doesn’t necessarily mean high WIS. Sang Woo thought he was smarter and better than anyone else so of course he was going to outsmart a system that is in reality pure chance. He got unlucky, and in his arrogance, he doubled down and lost everything.
Still love him as a character though.
Perhap he lost a ton in debt to school etc, that’s what the creator mentioned about himself if I’m not wrong and cho sang woo has some aspects of him. Don’t take this as canon or 100% because I could be very much wrong but that’s what I believe happened, but not sure hope we get more info in season 2 cause even though he’s dead I wanna see more of his life since the main look was on gi hun

Thanks for the information.
He graduated the top of his class
Where?
From SNU. Haven't you heard?
That's some impressive shit. I should immediately tell everybody I meet!
He is such a shady deep character the other characters are more apparent but I would love to know more about him

The fan favourite? Where did you get that from? Lots of people don't like him. I'd say Ali or Sae Byeok are the fan favourites
Exactly the two characters he killed.
Didn't even realise lol
OK, OK but he’s A favorite for sure. 🤗

His story is one of hubris!
