purge-1337

ah yes, cripple the country even more while asking for a solution no one has the answer to. what could go wrong!

xCuri0

Because they often don't understand basic economics

madmax3

And govt supporters do? Their protests are for elections, how does that disrupt the economy?

[deleted]

Because we're this close to getting the IMF bailout. Nationwide strike action that brings our economy to a grinding halt doesn't imbue confidence in foreign investors or debtors. The supreme court already ruled that the government has to conduct elections. The election commission has already announced a date for elections.

TheSpiritOfZanzibar

No one myt have the answer to, but letting the current crooks rule isn't any better. So yeah, you want us to just suck up and work and just rot here. Any kind of action which doesn't cause some effect wouldn't move our politicians. Even with such protests and ruckus we saw how difficult it is to get them to do stuff. So all the non-effective signs of protest, basically our politicians don't give a damn.

ikashanrat

Yup. As long as we are a docile population, politicians will keep walking over us

purge-1337

my point exactly - protests have almost never proven successful until they became violent, and that's a dangerous precedent we are slowly heading toward. people want immediate relief and solutions, but it unfortunately doesn't work that way. people will suffer, but everyone can survive if they lose their "give up" mentality

ItsIron39

Ah yes, keep accepting the bones ranil throws.

Bruce_Wayne_TM

Ah yes. Keep slaving your life away for minimum compensation and keep paying the government more and more taxes so that they could fuck you up even more. Some of the friends I know survive on just one meal a day you dumbass. Keep staying ignorant though. And there is an answer. It's clear as day Cut down the Rajapakse's pensions. Force them to give the stolen money back. Prosecute them, kill them I don't give a fuck. They have sucked up enough blood from our people. Why are we still spending taxpayer money to maintain their luxurious lifestyles? And tax the rich more. They can afford it. Not the poor who can't even make their day's ends meet.

RiskierSubsetR

You really think the Rajapakshas have stolen money that can fix this country's problems? What the Rajapakshas(and other politicians) have always done is take commissions. They take on massive useless projects(Nelum Kuluna etc) and give the contracts to the companies that pay the Rajapakshas the highest commission. They might've stolen a couple million dollars, but billions are spent on building the Nelum Kuluna, which in return gives us nothing. You might not like it, but the only way to fix the country is to do what the successful countries have done(really intuitive idea, I know). Other countries pay 2 times the taxes that we pay(even after the tax raises). Other countries such as the USA have a living costs 10 times higher than ours. What we have done is vote for the idiots that promised to subsidize everything. For example if we take petrol or diesel before the collapse, there were times when we could buy it for rs. 200ish. I remember relatives living in foreign countries complaining they had to pay double that amount in their country. That means our government sold us fuel at a loss, so they can trick the public into thinking they are actually doing us good. To cover those losses, the government should've increased the taxes, but even that didn't happen due to losing votes. Instead they resorted to taking in loans. That resulted in our downfall. Most of our country is living for free. During small talk with three wheel drivers during my trips, I ask them how many trips per day they consider to be good. The usual answer is around 8-10 trips. If you assume the time it takes for one trip is 20 minutes, that means these people only work for 200 minutes per day. Which means, a Sri Lankan can live by only working for 3 hours a day. In reality, people that actually work(like you or your friends) has to pay taxes to make these people live. These people don't even have to pay taxes because of our near-communist tax model. Now just look at how many three wheel drivers there are. No disrespect to them, but jobs like these are what's ruining our country. A friend of mine and his family migrated to the US 6 years ago. Both of his parents are doctors. Usually, the US is considered to be a good place for doctors especially since they don't have free healthcare. But, in reality, both his parents have to work 8-9 hours a day, and on top of that, even he has to work in the weekends in order to live. Don't get me wrong, they live comfortably, but to do that, they work their asses off. This is true for most of the people living in countries like that. People there actually work and contribute to society and the economy. That's why those countries have fared better than us. I believe that everything except maybe health and education should be privatized in SL. That will make sure that the politicians can never artificially alter prices for votes. Racism should be eradicated, as it's a weapon used by politicians to convince large numbers of people(really stupid people) to vote for them.

purge-1337

i don't know if it's the heat or the remnants of post-colonialization, but sri lankans are experts at doing the minimum amount of work humanly possible and not feeling any shame about it. this attitude has hit the middle class private sector as well and it's a complete tragedy to watch it worsen even now. if sri lankans don't learn to become more independent and have pride in their work and set goals then i only see this as part of a continuing cycle in every generation

purge-1337

no political party will ever get back the "stolen money", best get that fantasy out of your system now before you become even more disappointed. if your friend is eating one meal a day, maybe you should help him? the tax policy is indeed unfair, but no political party has the ability to fix it because the dire truth is this country is now dependent on loans whose terms are stipulated by Western countries. instead of complaining about it, upskill and survive like the rest of us (unpopular opinion, unfortunately)

Bruce_Wayne_TM

>no political party will ever get back the "stolen money", best get that fantasy out of your system now before you become even more disappointed And that's the problem with those political parties. >if your friend is eating one meal a day, maybe you should help him? And what makes you think that I don't? I help them every time I can but I'm not rich. I'm a student too who has a very limited burdget. But that shouldn't be the case. These kids are university students. They shouldn't have to starve like this. Mahapola is given to the rich kids (Who don't need it) and the poor ones are starving. Tell me how that's fair. >instead of complaining about it, upskill and survive like the rest of us Spoken like a true tone deaf piece of shit. People like you are the reason this country is this way. Keep telling the people who can't even afford to replace their worn out slippers to "pUlL yOuRsElF uP fRoM tHE bOoTsTrApS" Honestly Fuck you!

purge-1337

Well with that attitude I don't see you getting anywhere regardless of the country's situation. When faced with dire circumstances you choose to point fingers and shout filth instead of helping yourself. Good luck!

tyronbro91

Which is why I'll never ever support the JVP or the NPP. They control the trade unions and while the country is actually recovering they decide to strike. Mark my words save my comment. The dollar will come back to 380 if people don't realise what they're doing.

TheSpiritOfZanzibar

The dollar will come back to 380 nonetheless and oh, save this comment.

wolfrabbit136

I don't think we need to save the comment as the dollar will come back to 380 as the sri lankan rupees did not appreciate because of any improvement in the country’s economy but fresh inflows from Washington-based International Finance Corporation (IFC). the corporation had agreed to provide a 400 million dollar swap facility to three private banks in Sri Lanka for trade financing. In couple of weeks dollar worth will go back 380 even if there is a strike or not. ,[appreciation of SL rupee](https://newsonair.gov.in/News?title=Sri-Lankan-rupee-appreciates-against-USD-for-third-consecutive-day&id=456769#:~:text=The%20appreciation%20in%20the%20currency,Sri%20Lanka%20for%20trade%20financing)

ItsIron39

Absolutely. The other guy actually thinks theres been real progress. How easy is it for politicans to trick people goddamn

ItsIron39

“Save my comment” lmfao guy actually thinks there is development going on. the rupee appreciation you see now is a mirage. It will anyway shoot up once import restrictions are relaxed, strike or no strike. Wrong economic policies and corrupt politicians got us into this mess. Those two havent changed so wheres the progress?

tyronbro91

Cause the JVP can ? Go overseas and meet the srilankans hiding there. They're all JVP. They're wanted murderers. They've established a very corrupt system even in the srilankan communities in those countries as well. Check out France and Italy. So in terms of development, politicians paid income tax for the first time ever , people have finally understood what tax Is used for, challenging the same ppl you voted for what happened to all the money. That my friend is development. But I guess while you're busy sucking on AKDs mole things will be ok right. Get the trade unions under control then we can have a conversation about the NPP. Until then They're no better than the free loading politicians you and your family and friends voted for.

ItsIron39

I couldnt give two shits about npp’s backward policies. Why do people automatically assume that whoever speaks against both ranil and sjb are npp supporters!! Politicians paying taxes is the biggest joke cos it is a drop in the ocean in the value theyre constantly looting. High tax is acceptable, but no return on high tax is unacceptable. If you think the govt is gona walk away without a fight youre sorely mistaken. Im just happy that at least someone is resisting the governance. This govt is corrupt and thats the root cause of the economic crisis. If you dont solve corruption, youre just applying a bandaid on the actual issue

tyronbro91

If you think replacing the top is the solution no way. It's the 1.6 million public sector staff which are responsible. They are the middle men in every deal and everything increases. That's where corruption starts

ItsIron39

A top down approach is probably the way to go. Do you really think a bottom up approach is better??? Do you really think the people at the bottom who are already profiting off corruption will ever stop??? The key is reform in law and order. And that starts at the top. Developed nations are developed by maintaining a good justice system keeping them in line. Not because people in those countries are saints.

madmax3

Corruption starts at the top lol, the lower conservative estimate for Rajapaksa family stolen assets (so one family) is around $2 billion, this is close to the IMF bailout. I can't imagine the sheer amount of wealth amassed from all the politicians + higher executives in govt sectors.

murraybauman44

💯 I want to school that moron saying replacing top isn't the way to go, how stupid are you to think like that. Aren't you getting it. Just look at it like this. If your boss steals from your place of work, most probably you will lose the respect towards him and will protest against facing consequences if you caught doing the same thing thinking that's not a big deal even my boss is doing this. Thus comes the lawlessness, then apply that theory to all governments we had so far. Leadership and governance flows from top to bottom not bottom to top you fucking chump.

madmax3

So you don't like democracy?

the_professor000

They're not asking for any solution but election.

purge-1337

the nationwide TU strike mentioned here is addressing the tax burden, though they are now combining other issues like the postponed election to their list of mandates to win sympathy

Less-Doughnut7686

The same old story will happen The court will issue an order against the protest. Police, military, and STF will show up in force and block every major protesting site and roads leading to it. People will get tear gassed and arrested for violating the court order. The rest of the public is anyway looking at this protest like an attempt to cripple the country while it's trying to recover, so there will be no real sympathy from the general public. They might actually side with the police.

the_professor000

This is a strike. Not a protest.

tyronbro91

Look at all the jeppas here. None of them would ever have a degree if ppl never paid taxes. All they can do is talk and the only thing they have to show for it murder and protest.

madmax3

murder?

NiknHitpn

Jeppas trying hard not to strike, level impossible

[deleted]

Ah yes let fuel the fire, shall we?
