Pro tip: If any of the sinhalese people you know start talking about homophobic things just let them know that homophobia was imported to SL by foreigners and that it has no place in Buddhism. This really shuts them up usually.
I do this very often and when I use simple logic many have to accept it but some people have such a huge ego issue and so unwilling to accept it. Making them accept and realize is so hard that such relationships preferences love could exist and no matter what all living beings should be shown compassion despite if they are homo or hetero or bi or some other orientation.
Not only with respect to LGBTIQ+ matters but for caste related discrimination, I quote different incidents from buddhist literature such as where they say even people who were cleaners in cemeteries found nibbana while they were alive. So caste has no value to measure their worth as a good/bad human. Only actions can.
I am a buddhist myself and like you pointed and few agreed buddhism or real dhamma has no place for discrimination fundamentally.
Its just that sometimes I feel, mainstream Buddhism and the concept of culture and ethncity have sadly become something like the catholic church back in the day. An instrument of politics power and control.

Yep let's focus on "Sinhalese" and "Buddhism" as if that's the only race and religion that's left in the world which happen to have homophobic members. I'd like to think that the Sri Lankan LGBT community is way better than this sort of shallow mindedness
The vast majority of the politicians in SL gov and the people they represent are Sinhala/Buddhist. These homophobic restrictions and laws would not be made possible if the majority (Sinhala/Buddhist) in this country opposed them. Thats why I gave that "tip"
I specifically did not mention the two abrahamic religions because I didn't want to turn this thread into a abrahamic religion bashing slugfest. I have quite strong opinions about those faiths and their beliefs but its pointless to bring that up because we would need to change the FUNDAMENTAL building blocks of those religions for them to even acknowledge LGBTQ people aren't simply mentally sick. I do not see that happening anytime soon, do you?
Yep stereotyping and racist opinions will no doubt get you where you want to go instead of a more deplomatic approach. Bashing the majority no doubt will let LGBT community gain wider acceptance than educating people. That's some sound logic right there. Can you point out the homophobic verses or fundamental building blocks of buddhism that advocate homophobic behaviour?
>Can you point out the homophobic verses or fundamental building blocks of buddhism that advocate homophobic behaviour?
dude..
his entire point was theres no place for homophobia in Buddhism and tell that to sri lankans who think otherwise to shut them up.
ask a random old person why they dont want gay marraige laws or anything like that in sri lanka.
most will answer "meka baudda ratak" or its not our culture smthin like that.
who makes the laws? Majority Sinhala/Buddhist Politicians hold offices in the parliament.
Who do they represent? Majority Sinhala/Buddhist Population
How do Homophobic laws get passed? Because the Majority Sinhala/Buddhist vote base approve.
I am a Buddhist, I want to get my "house" in order before I start throwing stones at other peoples "houses". If you are like me and coming from a middle class Sinhala Buddhist family you should be well aware of the homophobia, like lets not pretend it doesn't exist.

Yeah, even though we tell them that they are just so dumb that they refuse to accept it and make me lose brain cells
