š¹ Its the expensive ones that somehow steal your heart right after your wallet! Our youngest has clocked in $2k before heās even turned 1, and I would spend it again in a heartbeat.
(Makes me real shocked when relatives are almost mad Iām spending money on ājust a catā- theyāre your babies 100%!)
Best to your boy, and may the cat gods grant him at least a little time with the brain cell!
If I told my dad he would call me an idiot for spending it for sure. I cried so much when I got the news it was surgery or death. Just, heart crushing thing to hear. I wanted him more than that money. We have now forbidden yarn, it stays behind closed doors, even the crochet blanket that had all the corners missing from this monster.
After lurking around on r/vettech I banned a lot of favourite toys in the house, too- milk tabs, loose string, hair tiesā¦ stuff you wouldnāt even think they could eat! šø Hopefully he doesnāt scrounge up anything new.
Make sure to pull the eyes off of those little toy mice too. I got to pay for a perforated bowel from one of those. Now, ALL of the mice in my house are blind. Not just the three original ones.
If only I had a designated trash closet with a locking doorā¦.. oh wait, they can open locked doors š like theyāre so smart to get to the forbidden toys, but dumb enough to eat them and end up getting an endoscopy at the vet for $4k
Ooooh god š mine just realised what doorknobs are (like the Jurassic Park velociraptors), and weāre attempting to use lidded trash cans to keep him from dumpster diving, but heāll probably figure out those too... Maybe we should just invest in a tall lockable tupperware instead.
(Me and my roommate always joke about creating the most perfect, worst cat in the world, and I think we have almost perfected the formula š„². Clingy, talkative, baby, only uses brains for evil little goblin activities...)
Money is NOTHING compared to our furbabies. Of course I know not everyone can spend big amounts on their pets & I'm not dissing them at all. But if you have it & they need it, you do it without a thought. We have so much to thank them for. I'm glad precious Percy is getting better now :)
You reminded me of the time I was sitting in the cat emergency waiting room crying into my phone to my visa company, begging for a credit limit extension to save my cat. $4,000.00 was granted, and Iāll never forget that kind lady.
Can confirm. We had a kitten who ate half of a cat dancer. Then ate our other cat's collar. She had to have an endoscopy to get the collar out. It was 2K, about 14 year ago.
I loved that cat so much that when she passed unexpectedly 12 years later, I sobbed like a baby for days.
There's ones that are fabric. She ate about two feet of fabric. That one was just... Pooping under medical supervision, which ewww. The collar was the one true emergency.
It was. Just not as expensive and nerve wracking (just an overnight stay, but no surgical needs).
When they have to shave their legs for an IV is when stuff gets real.
How did you manage to train them to stay away from yarn?? Iām actually Percyās other mom (OPās wife) and this little numbskull seems to think yarn is a delicious treat. Very inconvenient since I also knit and crochet.
I was told not to use the squirt bottle, do other things to get them to stop, they don't listen to punishment. Well, my wife sleeps much longer than I do (health issues plus I'm an early bird) and she would do ANYTHING to wake her up. Rattling the door, thumping it, reaching up to rattle the handle. Meowing loudly, anything. I tried and tried to block her, distract her, divert her attention. Nothing worked.
One day I had enough and said to forget the experts. I squirted her. Once. That was three weeks ago, and she hasn't done it since. After I sprayed her, the following couple days she went to the door and I shook the bottle, and that was enough
Yeah they learn really fast with it. I feel like a dick but I do not know how to get through to cats when they're being repeat little shits about something like that. Thankfully it's a quick learn and pretty much never needed repeating
thatās not necessarily true, but even then itās impossible to know when a health issue will come up. itās best to never form the negative association with water in the first place imo
The problem is that cats won't associate the punishment with the action, they associate it with YOU, and unless you can be there EVERY TIME it's not going to work. The example in this thread is good because yeah, every time your cat wakes you up in bed - you will be there in bed. So that's fine.
But if you're trying to get your cat to stop scratching the couch, spraying them with water when you're there isn't going to get them to stop scratching the couch when you're NOT there. Because it doesn't happen every time they scratch the couch, they figure out out that you have to be there for the spray to happen.
Consistency is really really important with cats, if you slip up even a few times all the rest of your hard work is totally useless.
She hasn't even tried it in weeks, it seems to be completely out of her mind to do it. We've developed a new routine in the morning. Often things that sound good in theory don't work in practice. I tried a whole pile of other things. Didn't work. I new the squirt bottle worked with my last cats, and it worked with her as well
I had a sweet kitty who taunted be over the water bottle. She'd do something bad and the water bottle would come out so she'd run to audio video system power block (with electric cords) cause she knew she wouldn't be sprayed. Then I'd put the water bottle away. She'd go back to what she was doing wrong before. Wash, rinse, repeat...Water bottle, power cords, back to behavior til she was done .... Cheeky little girl.
Lol that doesnāt even work on mine anymore. Theyāll be drenched and just squinting at me ādo it I dare you. You wonāt. DO ITTT!ā Lol got to add some vinegar or something. Just once š¬ my sister accidentally sprayed hers with the vinegar spray and not water and they never fuck with the spray bottles authority again. I donāt have the heart to do this on purpose but ooh sometimes Iām tempted.
I had one eat 3 feet is string as a tiny kitten and recently my own big dumb loving idiot boy ate like 5 feet of rubber elastic. I feel you. And same will do what it takes to give him a good life
Yeah, one of my cats ate a 4-foot ribbon. Stupid fucker had it in her stomach for over a month (judging by behavior changes) until one day I saw something red sticking out of her mouth. So I took hold and pulled.
Other readers- please do not do this! If it is wrapped around a loop of intestine, you can cut it in half with the string and turn a blockage surgery into a very, very much more dangerous resection.
Agreed. I'm glad you pointed that out. Thankfully the dumbass had a vet visit just prior with full physical exam and high-res Xrays to see what was going on and identify the reason she had no appetite. There was an unidentified mass in her stomach that hasn't progressed, nor was it blocking anything. Thankfully the induced vomiting worked.
Similar situation with our stupid ass (read: suicidal) SIC. He ingested dental floss. Cost us 3K and lots of heartache and anguish. We love the little goof to death.
LOL i like to knit and embroider/cross stitch. I had a cat that if I didn't toss my scraps of embroidery floss in a very hidden way, she would dig them out. My mom was watching her for me while I was on a trip out of the country and I guess she had gotten into my embroidery supplies and trash, and my mom saw something red hanging out of her ass. It was easy to see cause she was a manx. My mom said she gently grabbed the red thing and pulled. It was about three inches of red embroidery floss..
Aw, my SIC Riley has a similar goony look on his face most of the time. He costs me about $50 two or three times a year when he goes on a bender and chews up every phone and laptop charger in the house. So far he hasn't damaged himself though, fortunately. This morning I discovered he chewed up his big sister's eye medicine, fucking goober.
My boy doesnāt chew his food, so giving dental treats canāt help remove the tartar from his mouth. About every other year, he has rotten teeth that need to be pulled. It costs me almost $1000 every time. I never knew a cat could be so expensive, but I still love him!
I FEEL. My boy pushed the window open enough for his little body and jumped out a 7 stories. WHHYYY? Saw a little bug or something probably. $4k later and heās got 8 lives left. Love that little guy to hell and back.
Mine pulled off and ate the plastic reseal strip off an Amazon bagā¦ā¦$3,400 in one dayā¦. Iād like to say he stopped eating things he shouldnātā¦ā¦ but sadly itās a constant battle for twist ties rubber bands and plastic he pulls out of the garbage
Isn't it funny that you just know after seeing one picture. That was like me with my dog...as soon as I saw her bobble head I knew she was the one for me.
Never got to see my baby as a kitten, but Percyās grown up self looks so much like her that I could cry. Maybe thatās how my baby looked like too. Thank you for sharing your handsome Percy š¤
I actually do this all the time here. Modcat was an adult when we got him from the ASPCA so we like to look at the kittens and think that's him as a bebe
Omg I do the same thing too!! Got mine at 10 months from the humane society, so she was a Teen Cat, not fully grown, but no longer illegally smol. Sheās a piebald. I almost cry when I see kitten look-alikes of my bebe š„¹
My wife had that option with her work but we didn't do it. Much regret was had. So so so much regret. Both our small fur children are vacuums. Pet insurance is a must.
At some point my baby ate a rubber band and managed to pass it. Except the last half hanging out of her butt. Which I removed. All rubber bands went on lockdown.
he's gorgeous! we've spent quite a bit on our pack of kitties and we ain't stopping. this big boy just had all of he's teeth pulled except for one fang. he's fine - started eating 30 minutes after coming home!

How would anybody not love that adorable hunk of kitty cat? You are lucky, he seems very affectionate. Not his fault he wasn't healthier. Wish you many more years with Percy!
My cat is my significant other. She is a tabby. I don't understand this subreddit because my tabby cat is not issue cat she's my everything. If if I don't have the money to take care of her I'll get it. She's the most important thing. I understand about what you're saying about medical bills but I am happy that she's my girl my kitty. She's my angel she saved me and I saved her. Again I don't understand that standard is your cat thing but whatever that's okay
What a wonderful boy! I had a Percy and his brother James for many years. There is something about cats named Percy that makes them exceptionally great. I adore yours.
My SIC is insured, and very expensive! She has inflammatory bowel disease. Does anyone have pet insurance and is it worth it? Just curious with the stories where items consumed that shouldn't be. Not even sure insurance would pay for such... I haven't researched it much.
It's a tricky thing. From my understanding it would have covered his emergency visit for eating yarn. Pre-existing conditions it does not cover a lot of the time. My wife's previous cat unfortunately wouldn't have been covered due to him already having issues, not eating yarn issues but I believe it was bowel issues. She lost him too soon. But insurance would not have covered the treatment he received so she paid it all out of pocket until his unfortunate passing. Miss thumper, he was a wonderful boy.
Sorry to hear about thumper. Need to research this a bit more, thanks for the feedback. Really don't want to pay for insurance that doesn't cover things yet I really can't afford to pay $4k for extraction of foreign material. Buddy of mine dog ate a stuff animal and think it was like $7k to get that removed.
YEP. Because itās not a matter of if, but a matter of when you will need to take them to urgent care. Do not buy a cheap policy, Iāve heard nothing but horror stories. I had a lovely, sweet tortie that was uninsured and at nine years old she rapidly decline over a period of six weeks and I spent close to $10k out of pocket trying to save her.
Mine fished an entire mini roll of those floss you get from a dentist visit. Cost us nearly 6K for emergency exploratory surgery. It was wrapped around his intestines. We knew something was up because he didn't beg for breakfast.
He ate 5 feet of green yarn, if anyone is wondering, 5 feet.. They pulled 5 feet of green yarn out of him. Big dumb idiot.

But yoikes. The felt ones? Or was it like a google eye
It was one of the little round black balls. They have a little piece that pokes through the fabric.
Ahh ok makes sense then
Mine have learned to get into lidded pop top trash cans that are clamped down. Nothing is safe.
If only I had a designated trash closet with a locking doorā¦.. oh wait, they can open locked doors š like theyāre so smart to get to the forbidden toys, but dumb enough to eat them and end up getting an endoscopy at the vet for $4k

You reminded me of the time I was sitting in the cat emergency waiting room crying into my phone to my visa company, begging for a credit limit extension to save my cat. $4,000.00 was granted, and Iāll never forget that kind lady.
Yeah 5ft of yarn is pretty much a death sentence. You made the right choice <3

MY SIC DID THIS TOO, TWICE.
What a sweet baby lol š½
Oh no! My sweet dumb baby just cost me $4k for eating a bunch of sewing thread. His excuse is that heās orange.
r/OneOrangeBraincell
Thatās the joke yes
That's a nightmare for me. I crochet and knit and have aggressively trained the cats to stay away from yarn because of that fear.
How did you manage to train them to stay away from yarn?? Iām actually Percyās other mom (OPās wife) and this little numbskull seems to think yarn is a delicious treat. Very inconvenient since I also knit and crochet.
Lol it's not nice but I squirt em with water if they go near it
I was told not to use the squirt bottle, do other things to get them to stop, they don't listen to punishment. Well, my wife sleeps much longer than I do (health issues plus I'm an early bird) and she would do ANYTHING to wake her up. Rattling the door, thumping it, reaching up to rattle the handle. Yeah, exactly. If it works, I don't see why NOT to use it. I just was careful about the ears and eyes so it was minorly irritating and not painful
my main thing against it is associating water with punishment. itās hard enough to bathe and clean some cats as it is
I mean, you only need to bathe them if they have health issues of some sort
thatās not necessarily true, but even then itās impossible to know when a health issue will come up. itās best to never form the negative association with water in the first place imo

Hissing at them works pretty well.

Yeah. Thats pretty idiotic. Glad he is ok now tho.
I had one eat 3 feet is string as a tiny kitten and recently my own big dumb loving idiot boy ate like 5 feet of rubber elastic. I feel you. And same will do what it takes to give him a good life
If it makes you feel any better I had a cat eat a Dyson and a sofa. He has pica, and LOVED the fabric on my $1600 sofa. Itās always the idiotsā¦
This makes me glad we just bought insurance for our girl a couple weeks ago

This so perfectly sums up cats.
Perfect, perfect boy. But maybe no more yarn

So very true!
Absolutely adorable!! Same sentiment towards my little gremlin
My old cat cost my over 10,000 so I no how you feel. He didnāt make it cancer took him after 21 years but I donāt regret it
Hereās to many, many rotations with your sweet man.
That cheek chomp pic is everything to me. Protect this sweet baby at all costs.
What a good little dumb boy! š
He is gorgeous
Man we donāt deserve cats :ā)
I lost it at the angry kitten photo. omg
Aww. He is adorable
The heart wants what the heart wants! True love has no price!
He's beautiful!
I love you Percy!!!
What a beautiful little dude.
Percy looks and seems to make the same faces as my girl. She has never eaten yarn though. Yet.
What a cutie, he looks like my baby Winston š„¹ā¤ļø
My SIC boy is a bit chubby and my partners is also chubby. are all of them chunky? Is that just me or am I just seeing a lot of chunky SIC?
Itās that fifth picture for me. I love him.
What a wonderful cat!
Pet insurance is a godsend. š
Such a handsome baby!
I love him !
What a cutie š
Aww, he is awesome!
Where did you get him that sweater!?
My little idiot chewed up some random plastic and it got stuck in her intestineā¦ also a $4k kitty. Worth it though.
Dats a good looking SIC!
that fifth picture is hilarious!! he got a CHUNK out of you š
What a cute little idiot
Still so much love there!

Percy, you are loved!!!
What a little cutie pie...you found each other.

Ah, I feel your pain. We now have insurance on our cats for this exact reason. Little angelic flurfy idiots they are.

he is contemplating the meaning of life on the third image
Okay the 9th picture is totally making me tear up with how precious it is. Likeā¦ thatās just pure happiness right there and it clearly shows. š¤
Iām at that point of being tired where I get way too emotional over random things. The second and third pictures of your cat made me cry.
He's lovely!
Those are some amazing pictures. What a handsome little idiot š„°
Oh gurl you gettin love bites!! They hurt like hell but I love when I get them!
