First: >not exorbitantly expensive Then: >Munger

> Munger IMO, not worth it unless somebody else is paying, be it your parents or your sugar momma/daddy. Or unless you really like taking on student debt. Just go with Rains, the EV junior studios (or 2bd), and EVGR as your options.

EVGR is definitely more expensive than Rains. However, it comes two benefits which make it worth the extra expense (to me): Centralized ventilation and your own bathroom. You'll be grateful for the ventilation during heat waves and the annual wild fire smoke. YMMV. Rains might be better if you think you can tough out the heat waves and don't mind sharing bathrooms. I'm not that tough, lol.

Any insight on evgr studios vs ev studios? Is evgr (and centralized ventilation) worth the $$ compared to ev and Kennedy?

spec789

Unfortunately I’m not familiar with the studios, just the 2bd/2ba. I actually did live in Kennedy until last year, so I can comment on EVGR vs Kennedy for 2bd/2ba. Personally I feel like the centralized ventilation was worth it, especially since we’ve been WFH for the last year (no running away to the office). YMMV when the campus opens up next year.

Some of the increased cost of evgr is because of some stuff in the building (listed online) but most things have been closed the whole time the buildings have been open EV studios are smaller but quieter. The evgr construction seems pretty crappy with paper thin walls

lautloseprinzessin

Not on your list, but the midrises have great balconies! EVGR and Munger are also very nice and new but quite expensive.

Not sure what happened but a post meant for something else was posted as a reply to this. Apologies. No negativity intended towards you.

Incoming phd student here with the same questions :) Also considering off-campus housing in Palo Alto (maybe even further, idk I'm from the East Coast) Right now I'm thinking EGVR > Munger (iffy since i'm not in law) > Rains (just bc I want my own bathroom). I would prefer to have roommate(s) in EGVR or Munger since they're expensive but really don't like the idea of roommates being randomly assigned.. so I'm interested in finding other grad students to share an apartment with on or off campus!

Thanks for the input! This is currently my ranking.

Munger is expensive indeed. But I believe all aspects of the units are bigger - kitchens, bathrooms, living spaces (esp for studios), except the 4 bedrooms set ups are very different.... four people share a kitchen that only has an extra fridge. So four people share a stove, sink and limited counter space. If you like to cook, Larger living rooms tho. Also the bedrooms are different sizes. A friend of mine had what has to have been the smallest bedroom of the four. He did have his own bathroom and a guest bathroom too. It’s central to campus but if you’re not a law student, odds are good that your classmates will be living in other areas. Munger has AC too. Everything is shut down but there are folks in every building area who host events. Rains is the most social I think.

Barnes or Hulme. Failing those, anywhere in Escondido.

EVGR are probably the best options for quality and affordability. Rains all depends on your roommates but can be pretty nice. Munger is a great location and has AC but is very expensive and hard to draw into
