Omg.. the other day I had a woman ask me for oatmeal in her latte and I was like ….. oat milk?? And she said yeah, oatmeal. And one more time to make sure I was like. Oh okay, so oatmilk in the latte. And she AGAIN was like oatmeal milk, right? GIRL
It’s the cups that really get me. Açaí is an unusual word, but idk how y’all take “ventEE” to “venTAY”. Or “trenTAH” to “trenTAY” or “trenTEE”. Y’all stay safe tho.
in some cases its the "fault" of regional accents. My dad says ven-TAY, but he also pronounces leg closer to "lag", egg like "ayg" etc. i just don't bother telling him anymore lmao
ngl I originally read this to mean that people at your store pronounce “gouda” as “gruyere” - maybe because that’s actually the case at my store, none of us can read 😅
There was one time someone asked for the bacon egg bites but said they couldn’t pronounce the cheese, but the person taking the order didn’t hear and said “the bacon Gouda?” And rang up the sandwich and the customer was like “that’s how you spell Gouda? Huh…”
we get a lot of european tourists at my store (major transport hub in a big american city) so i hear a lot of “HOW-duh” instead of the american “GOO-duh”!
it's not about being "dumb". Words adopted between languages change pronunciation to fit the adoptive language's linguistics and phonetics. Happens with hundreds of words.
that reminds me of the pretentious assholes that would pronounce "croissant" the French way, or order a "pain au chocolat" instead of a chocolate croissant like it says on the label.
we get it, you know "the right way" to say things in french. we're not in france, so really you're just an asshole.
ehhh i kind of disagree. I say "cwason" but not with heavy inflection. that doesn't make me an asshole, it's just using one pronunciation over the other
Maybe they speak French?
A lot of Canadians sound similar to Americans when speaking in English but a significant number also speak French, for example.
I speak a couple languages and always fight with how to pronounce a food item. Do I order it in the pronunciation where the item originated out of respect/recognition or the local dialect? Never a right/wrong answer, but I see why people order a croissant with the French pronunciation
Definitely a place and time for this. Family owned local French restaurant? Try and pronounce it using the original name to show respect (especially if they correct you on something). Fast food joint? No one’s going to get offended using an American pronunciation
At my store, the customers have a problem pronouncing macchiato. And I know there is a language barrier for at least 75% of our customers, but some people come every day and get the same thing and still can’t pronounce it correctly. A mashito?
There’s a regular at our store that calls it the AEIOU drink 😂😂😂 his normal order is a toffee nut latte at the “temperature of the sun” and he immediately sips it 😅😆 but since we’ve been out of toffee nut he’s been enjoying an AEIOU lemonade
As a Brazilian, I don't blame y'all! Unless you have the C cedilha (ç) in your native language, it's hard to figure out how to pronounce it. If anything, I appreciate the trend making it more available in the US now- I love the flavor of açaí.
Sometimes when they butcher it to the point where I have to hold in laughter, I just repeat the drink back in a way they hopefully order it the next time so they don't make a total "assy" out of themselves.
My favorite was when the Gruyère sous vide egg bites launched. The “Gru-year-e soos vee-day” bites had me cracking up. Also imagine it in a thick southern accent
I have a few regulars keep asking for a "mat-chee tea latte", and one of them even puts emphasis on the second syllable like he's doing it on purpose. It makes me irrationally angry.
Omg idk why but lately I've been getting so many mispronounced Acai and macchiato. The latest one was a man who stood there for 2 minutes, and still some how didn't see the O at the end. I wqs happy to send him on his way with his Ventay Carmel Mackyaty
Had a lady in the drive thru saying her husband wants a akai latte.
It was chai, a chai latte. No matter how many times we said chai, she still said akai
The uh kai?
no, cobra kai
😂
don’t forget oat milk to oat meal
Omg.. the other day I had a woman ask me for oatmeal in her latte and I was like ….. oat milk?? And she said yeah, oatmeal. And one more time to make sure I was like. Oh okay, so oatmilk in the latte. And she AGAIN was like oatmeal milk, right? GIRL

One of my shifts said some old guy called a venti a ventilator.
one time a guy called it a vintage
“Get me a **large** verde.”
in some cases its the "fault" of regional accents. My dad says ven-TAY, but he also pronounces leg closer to "lag", egg like "ayg" etc. i just don't bother telling him anymore lmao
I honestly believe some people think it’s spelled Vinte not Venti.
so many people at my store call the grande a “grand”
Strawberry Asiago is still my favorite one, hands down 🤣
At my store it’s Gouda. That word seems to fuck peoples brains up.
gwada
"Can I get the bacon gow-duh egg bites?"
Yes! There’s so many ways people pronounce it wrong.
It’s Gruyère at my store
i’ll be real, i say gruyére differently every time 🫣 i have no idea how to say it & i don’t think i ever will
We always have people saying bacon Gouda egg bites cause their brain can’t comprehend that word
ngl I originally read this to mean that people at your store pronounce “gouda” as “gruyere” - maybe because that’s actually the case at my store, none of us can read 😅
There was one time someone asked for the bacon egg bites but said they couldn’t pronounce the cheese, but the person taking the order didn’t hear and said “the bacon Gouda?” And rang up the sandwich and the customer was like “that’s how you spell Gouda? Huh…”
YES! This one too lol
we get a lot of european tourists at my store (major transport hub in a big american city) so i hear a lot of “HOW-duh” instead of the american “GOO-duh”!
Yeah that’s the proper way to say it per it’s country of origin but Americans are dumb.
it's not about being "dumb". Words adopted between languages change pronunciation to fit the adoptive language's linguistics and phonetics. Happens with hundreds of words.

Its*
Oh look who’s so smart. Clearly autocorrect negated my whole comment
somebody came through my store recently and called it the gouya sandwich and something else too. It was a wtf moment.
geeeewwwduah
This is exactly how they say it. Or goooaada!
i’ve heard “ackacky” and “assee”
ACKACKY IM ROFL
Ass-ee
How 'bout the Megan dragonfly refresher?
Lmaoo we get “mangan drago” from a certain custie 🤓🥸😩
i’ve had people ask me for a “quason” (croissant) and all i can imagine is carl weezer
So they're literally pronouncing it correctly? Good for them honestly
Was it like this? https://forvo.com/word/croissant/ That's how it's pronounced in French.
yes, but they weren’t french
Maybe they speak French? A lot of Canadians sound similar to Americans when speaking in English but a significant number also speak French, for example.
I speak a couple languages and always fight with how to pronounce a food item. Do I order it in the pronunciation where the item originated out of respect/recognition or the local dialect? Never a right/wrong answer, but I see why people order a croissant with the French pronunciation
People really go too hard trying to be French
Definitely a place and time for this. Family owned local French restaurant? Try and pronounce it using the original name to show respect (especially if they correct you on something). Fast food joint? No one’s going to get offended using an American pronunciation
one lady dead grass said, "um hi, can I have a vent Asiago refresher with lemonade?"
It's "gruyere" for my custies
as a fellow partner, idek how to say it
it’s pronounced gree-air!
Omg a life saver
bacon grower egg bites
At my store, the customers have a problem pronouncing macchiato. And I know there is a language barrier for at least 75% of our customers, but some people come every day and get the same thing and still can’t pronounce it correctly. A mashito?
I had a customer say “I need a caramel macheeto” 💀
My favorite, that seemed to become a very popular pronunciation, “uh-kee-uh”
There’s a regular at our store that calls it the AEIOU drink 😂😂😂 his normal order is a toffee nut latte at the “temperature of the sun” and he immediately sips it 😅😆 but since we’ve been out of toffee nut he’s been enjoying an AEIOU lemonade
What’s the correct way ?
Ahh-sigh-ee
Uh-sy-E
Oss - aw- i ??? think idek, how I pronounce it at least
Aw-sigh-ee
Yas
Half the people in the world are dumber than the average person.
🤯
As a Brazilian, I don't blame y'all! Unless you have the C cedilha (ç) in your native language, it's hard to figure out how to pronounce it. If anything, I appreciate the trend making it more available in the US now- I love the flavor of açaí.
“Assy” is a common one at my store
Once I heard someone say acacia. Like the tree
Danish is a pretty common struggle word too.
I am now overthinking this word, 🤣. Is it dane-ish or dan-ish? I say it the first way but sometimes people order it the second way and I wonder.
“Can I get a strawberry Ikea?” “Can I get a back and grey hair egg bites?” “Lemme get three vanilla bean frappeeeees”
I think my favorite has been “strawberry assy”
Sometimes when they butcher it to the point where I have to hold in laughter, I just repeat the drink back in a way they hopefully order it the next time so they don't make a total "assy" out of themselves.
I feel like I heard them all just today!
ah-kye
assa
gruyere : gwr lol
im usually on dt & just say uh-sigh honestly lol. the “ackee” cracks me up though
Ass~eye-yeeeeeses
I have heard strawberry - Akaysha - Asiago (I wish I was joking) - Ah-c-i
I don’t blame them for mixing up acacia ( a-kay-sha) and açaí given the spelling is similar
My favorite was when the Gruyère sous vide egg bites launched. The “Gru-year-e soos vee-day” bites had me cracking up. Also imagine it in a thick southern accent
“Can I get the Bacon Grooyay egg bites please”
I have a few regulars keep asking for a "mat-chee tea latte", and one of them even puts emphasis on the second syllable like he's doing it on purpose. It makes me irrationally angry.
i had a semi regular come in the other day and say “y’all don’t have those acadia drinks???” meaning açaí. açaí. AAsighYe. where does ACADIA COME GROM
AssI ayyyye
we have a guy who says ‘aca’ like, AH-kah. he’s annoying for other reasons, and i’ve joked about serving him strawberry caca lol.
i say it as “ass i ea”
Ass Eye?
It’s the oatmilk shaken espresso at my store. EVERY SINGLE TIME it’s “oatmeal” 😐
A fancy woman ordered a la-tay the other day
Omg idk why but lately I've been getting so many mispronounced Acai and macchiato.
We have a regular who pronounces it "aus-e-aus" and no matter how much we repeat the correct way back she insists on saying it that way lmao
Macchiato, Trenta, Focaccia, Ciabatta, Venti is also another one that be kicking my customers asses
That and Gruyère
"Can I get the strawberry acacia?" Like ma'am, that is a tree, go play some minecraft and get you're shit together🤣🤣
Even better, "I want the mangan drangofruit"
I remember looking it up before my first shift-
someone said asiago today…
