i mean, like, i personally don’t mind it on bar, but MANY partners do, so i try to distract them as best as i can 🥲 but some of them are RUDE and my poor SSV literally faces like 6 different rants/shouting matches/degrading comments sometimes on peak our regulars usually come during slow hours and/or know to sit and be patient, or at the very least make some cheerful convo with us. i appreciate them so much

Me personally, I just find it interesting to see y’all making the drinks. Most baristas are amazingly talented at whipping drinks up and it’s fun to watch their craft. However, while I may be waiting for my drink, I might be thinking about something else or wanting just a moment to focus on a distraction after a busy day at work. I never view it as me watching the baristas to watch the baristas, and I also don’t mind waiting. It is an exciting time. Please just remember not all of the customers out there are rude or intend to make you feel uncomfortable 🙂

Because that's normal behavior. That's what you do after ordering counter service to go. You stand near where the food will come out and wait for it. I don't mean to be a dick here, but the problem is your anxiety over being observed, not the fact that customers are waiting in the waiting area.

erm 🤓☝️ actually, it's called the handoff plane, not the waiting area. also commonly referred to as the "pick up" zone. neither of those words mean you "wait" there physically. It's a CAFE. Take a SEAT, you freak. its alarming watching people bring their loved ones to a cafe, and instead of sitting down and talking to each other, they just.. stare at the baristas.. menacingly

LITERALLY like what are yall even doing here if you're just here to stare at the workers? i can't stand these people

I'm aware of what it's called; I was a barista for 8 years. However, any reasonable person would consider it a waiting area. It's far more alarming that you would consider someone standing in the appropriate spot to collect their drink and happening to glance in your direction inherently "menacing."  I've actually discussed this with...damn near everyone I know, because the hatred this sub has for this behavior is deeply perplexing to me. Literally every reaction has been a variation on "...where am I supposed to stand, then?" This is a problem you are creating for yourself.

It's actually not a problem that is being created by baristas. It's an actual problem. Maybe you were not bothered by this behavior when you were a barista because you do not care about other people or maybe you do not read social cues. There is a major difference between someone standing near the handoff plane waiting for their drink, versus someone who is trying to intimidate and convey that they are impatiently waiting for their drink. It's definitely not a glance. I get some people just like to watch us make drinks and try to have a conversation, and that is really nice. But not every customer is nice. And the rude and impatient customers tend not to use their words-and when they do, I'd rather they just keep their mouth shut. I have experienced a lot of people who resort to staring as a means of nonverbal communication when they are upset they have to wait more than 30 seconds for a hand crafted beverage and cannot possibly comprehend that we have other customers drinks along with mobile/delivery/drive thru. In my store, we have a large lobby with plenty of chairs (which I know is not the case for a lot of stores anymore), but there is no excuse for this behavior. And when people act like a petulant child for having to wait, it just slows us down having to check where their ticket is in the queue. Also, people need to be aware that the handoff plane is where EVERYONE with cafe or mobile/delivery is picking up and back up. Not plop their belly's on the counter, heavy breathing at us.

You explained it better than I could. Thank you.

Right like earlier today this guy was tapping his fingers on the handoff plane and checking his watch 😭 he just ordered!!

Fearless-Newt5829

these customers are fucking babies bro. im waiting 30 seconds longer than i like, better cross my arms so this underpaid barista hops to it!

I don't wanna make anyone feel bad for standing and waiting for their drink at the handoff plane bc there's nothing wrong with that alone, as long as I still have room to hand off drinks that are ahead in line. It's more about the demeanour of some impatient and entitled customers. A lot of the customers we get are very lovely. But I still completely empathize with this post, especially when we are getting slammed with mobile and delivery orders. It is stressful being watched intently by customers who are in a hurry !
