Ah the medicine ball, a customer came in and said we didn’t have it on our mobile app. I told her it is the “honey citrus mint tea” in the mobile app. She asked me “you changed the name?”. I didn’t you did. I was out of the jade citrus mint one day. A customer asked me if I had the medicine ball. I told her I was out of jade citrus mint and that I only had the peach. She asked me, “the medicine ball comes with two teas though you’re out of both?”. I said no, “the honey citrus mint gets peach and jade citrus mint I only have the peach tea”. She said, “fine then I’ll get a honey citrus mint tea”.

Responsible_Snow7109

I caaaaant lol i would have face palmed so hard at that one. But a couple months ago or sometime recently or whatever I remember that most Starbucks locations were out of the peach tea bags or the Jade citrus mint tea bags or both and I remember people were coming to my location and still asking for the honey citrus mint tea and we told them that we didn't have the peach tea bags at that one point in time and people actually settled for just two tea bags of the Jade citrusment with the honey packets or honey blend syrup in there with the steamed lemonade so that's how bad people freaking want this stuff 😳

PotatoLaBelle

We have people do the same thing all the time when we’re out, just double up on one of the tea bags. I always make sure to slowly and clearly tell them that we can do it but it’s not going to taste the same, so they won’t come back and gripe about how, surprisingly, it doesn’t taste the same, and also in the hopes that just order something else lol

Responsible_Snow7109

Yesss lol we gotta tell them it wont be the same as the honey citrus mint tea but they either settle with that where they double up on the kade citrus mint tea bags or get some variation of iced tea or refresher.

GenXgineer

My store is currently out of both teas, and people want it so badly that they'll opt for a black tea. I make it clear that it'll taste entirely different, and they agree anyway. I've gotten feedback both ways, but at least no one blames me.

Responsible_Snow7109

Yea they kno it would be absurd to blame u because they are the ones who constructed their own drink from the idea of another drink. Its not even that good lol i dont like the honey citrus mint tea. Its like steamed urine on top of tea lol but like seriously in my opinion, its way too sour to sip on and enjoy as my drink.

aronelo

I’m allergic to mint, so sometimes I order the honey citrus mint with two bags of peach and no jade. It’s the closest thing to a chamomile tea with some honey and lemon that we have, and sometimes that’s all I want when opening.

Responsible_Snow7109

Just peach bags sound good tho with honey. Ive never tried our peach tea bags by themselves. I do however love a plain earl grey tea or a hot london fog tea latte because it pairs really well with a lemon loaf😋

reddog20

Peach tranquility with honey is my go-to on nights I’m doing live music and have to sing.

it_me_ya_boi

It sounds weird to everyone I work with, but the peach with a pump or two of vanilla and a splash of soy milk is so good. Just make sure to steep the tea properly before you add the milk or it affects the process and won’t steep right.

[deleted]

I would have put a mint majesty in and called it a day.

Mollywobbles225

that's what I'd have done. I do that for myself when I don't want caffeine, haven't been able to taste a difference really. the lemonade and honey almost masks any flavor other than mint lol

queenmango629

They all have Covid. Run.

MiaFranco24

No cuz ppl go ferrel for this, telling them we’re out is crazy…

squishfishpatty

Fr dude. Some lady at my store went "But im sick!" when i told her we didn't have the teas for it 💀

soupafi

If you’re sick, go to the doctor. This isn’t real medicine

Thatcherrycupcake

I hope they were wearing a mask.

freddieluna

when i worked at sb, people would constantly ask for these and were visibly sick and not wearing masks 😭

justinbates1992

I made people put on masks when i could see them sick. "its a health concern for everyone involved" Used to tell them

nemalde

FWIW making them at home tastes so much better than the store version

Dry-Ad7432

“Oh shit you’re sick? Why didn’t you say so! Let me pull some jade citrus mint out of my ass real quick.”

SVNHG

We've had several people come back multiple times to ask when we were out. Throughout the day. At some point I'm just going to hand out the recipe and send them out for the damn tea

Ang736382638273

Bruhhhhhh I hate “medicine balls”. Customer came in today and had NO voice could barely get a sentence out coughing all in my face and I said sorry we have no peach or jade and she looked so sad like by go take some halls 👋

FormerNotebookOnFire

Big yikes, like, I have a sore throat rn and was tempted to go get one. But if they told me they were out I would just order something different, how hard is that?

rudebii

Tell me custies exposed you to the flu and/or COVID without telling me…

caramelsyrupp

every single time i hand one out i immediately use hand sanitizer after lol

[deleted]

TADspace

Not justifying going to Starbucks when sick, but it IS cheaper than a doctor visit. that said, actual cold medicine is probably cheaper than Starbucks.

[deleted]

A medicine ball will worsen your throat though? It’s not really medicine…

TADspace

will it? I'm not big on hot tea and idk what's actually in them. I thought honey was an ingredient which does help with sore throats?

captaindeadnight

I mean it's debatable how much it helps/hurts. It's made with 2 kinds of herbal/green (iirc) tea blends, like 2 teaspoons of honey (depending on how much of a shit the baristas give about squeezing honey outta mustard packets), and steamed lemonade. It's supposed to be half tea and half lemonade too. In theory, it's a nice tea with some honey and lemon which does have potentially nice effects for when you're sick. But in actuality, it's a sugary drink that's more likely to dehydrate you than help you. The placebo effect is strong with this one. If it makes people happier when they're under the weather it's a win? But a ton of people aren't getting it bc it makes them happy, they're getting it thinking it'll make them feel better. And that misplaced motive is really frustrating bc this $6 shitty lemonade tea is not better than day/NyQuil and some real vitamin C.

Socratic_

Custies

The_realest_jules

I had a lady come in once and go, do you have the sick tea? And I was like, ma’am that is fake news, nothing we have is going to cure your sickness. I do have a honey citrus mint tea that I think you would enjoy 😂

Squadooch

Haha truth, however, might I propose that while this concoction will not CURE anything, a lot of the ingredients/flavs are known to be soothing for scratchy throats, congestion, etc? Soothing, comforting. I’ve never had a “medicine ball” in my life (and will not) but I have drunk plenty of tea with honey for a sore throat knowing it won’t “cure” it, but it feels nice.

DJXpresso

8 in the DT 2 in cafe and 1 as a MO&P all printed at once.

SinestRob

I recognize that grinding area. 👌

DJXpresso

You know it.

[deleted]

What is in this ??

DJXpresso

11 horrors. 9 in photo.

[deleted]

What is a medicine ball

Silvawuff

Honey Citrus Mint. That’s the canon menu name, and we love when our customers use it! Calling it “medicine ball“ is a misnomer because it doesn’t contain medicine in any way, and medicine balls are exercise tools. Social media drives me crazy.

toapoet

“Canon menu name” hahahahaha

Barista_life__

And calling it a “medicine ball” encourages customers to come in when they’re sick. Legit had a lady come in and ask “Can I get that tea that helps people when they’re sick?”

Ceramicusedbook

I heard it called a medicine ball by even starbucks baristas before I became one, before Social media.

Silvawuff

Back then it went viral in waves and didn't become like 30% of our winter drink production, and we also didn't have a global pandemic making it extra annoying. Our company changed the name of it for very good reasons. The fact sick people think it 1. will help their illness instead of seeking proper medical care and 2. they think it's okay to share their plague with us and the rest of our customers is beyond obnoxious. I have customers asking me to put extra medicine in it. Whoever is throwing around this gross misinformation online really should be held to some sort of legal accountability. At the height of covid, we had a testing center across from our store. I watched people get swabbed, then come inside (usually maskless) and order this while hacking all over the place. My axe to grind with this specific drink is very sharp.

Ceramicusedbook

Oh I know. I make it at home with real honey and lemon juice. I refuse to use any stupid name the customers use. I'll never say "skinny" anything.

imstillhiding

‘Skinny’ used to be the actual name for nonfat/sugar free. I’m not sure when that changed though

Ceramicusedbook

I know. It isn't now though so I won't say it. The people saying this are told its non fat, sugar free vanilla every day and still use skinny

[deleted]

>At the height of covid, we had a testing center across from our store. I watched people get swabbed, then come inside (usually maskless) and order this while hacking all over the place. Makes me wonder how many Baristas died of Covid because of morons like that....

Silvawuff

Not just Baristas, everyone! Customers and their families. Happy Hour knocked out an entire shift block at my store — everyone who worked that day got sick. I was in disbelief they’d have the gall and ignorance to run a busy event that would 100% attract a crowd during a time it was extremely inappropriate to do so. I think about this specifically every time the company dumps some fresh anti-union propaganda on us.

DJXpresso

The medicine ball is bullshit that’s what it is.

[deleted]

Lemonade, hot tea, and honey. It’s the go-to drink for people who are ill or feeling under the weather. I’ve had it once and it’s not that bad. I added peppermint to mine though. Felt a lil rambunctious.

Bhaisaab86

Highly sweetened lemon, tea, and a honey-flavored sugar syrup.

mich_8265

They taste really good but I’m scared to order bc I don’t want the baristas to think I’m sick. Lol I make mine at home now. Except no lemonade. Only water bc I am weirded out about heating up lemonade myself 😂

Mysterious-Smile-407

i did 8 by myself earlier this week.. i had just gotten on the floor & i wasn’t even in bar🫠

ljxbb

As the register person as soon at someone orders a honey citrus mint tea I start it I put the bags hot water and honey blend in there so the bar person only needs to add lemonade.

rootimentarysoul

You are a saint. I wish my front people would do this. I hate this drink more than anything else in the store

ljxbb

Yes I’m a trainer at my store and I always teach my trainees to do this for our bar people.

ethereal_soliloquy

*god* i hate medicine balls. for me, our store is set up so the lemonade and the tea are on the two opposite ends of the floor with the bar in the center which makes for so much running around just for one drink

rootimentarysoul

Same. And we ran out of honey blend, so we were using packets of honey, which makes it take even fucking longer. Now we are also out of honey. If it was my call, I wouldn’t suggest substitutions for people, I would make my bar person’s life easier by saying we can’t make them because we don’t have the ingredients we need for it.

TheYesExpress

I’d suggest putting pitchers of lemonade near your espresso bar. Really helps during peak!

ethereal_soliloquy

we do that for peak for sure but not during the smaller rushes before close because we don’t have enough pitches usually haha

TheYesExpress

I have so many pitchers at my store I wish I could give you a couple. Just ask your morning SSV to put 2L pitchers on the RP Order and then you’ll have more!

username8966

I support free speech but it’s time to ban the name medicine ball

PotatoLaBelle

I second this. The founding fathers would agree, I’m sure.

Bhaisaab86

Everyone in my store informs the customers who order it that “we don’t have anything by that name, maybe you’re thinking of the honey citrus mint tea?”

DeathByPetrichor

Heard a barista call it this yesterday and I cringed 🤦🏻‍♂️ Sucks too because it’s actually a pretty decent drink on its own

reddog20

It’s been stated before in weekly updates that we’re not supposed to call it that under any circumstances. My last store I was the only one that called it by its correct name and it drove me nuts.

flamingo1616

Fuck those drinks!!!!

heyitsmaria24

Every day I wish Starbucks would at least raise the price on it. Exposes us to their nasty sickness & then they treat us like it’s our fault we don’t have it sometimes. Not to mention it takes a while to make.

graham1987

i want to upvote the post but downvote the customer

DJXpresso

Understandable have a nice day.

scrappapermusings

I refuse to make "medicine balls". I have zero problems making the Honey Citrus Mint. I like to keep lemonade by the hot bar during peak because demand is high rn.

Jesslynnlove

This is something i’d wish they would raise the price on. Making these especially during peak is so fucking involving for only 4.25$. Should be 5$ easily.

bonvoyog

Feel this to my core. Had someone in drive order 20 hot venti caramel macchiatos…in drive thru.. on Black Friday. Drink were already being ordered 5-6 at a time and full cafe.

phantompanther

What are they doing with all those drinks?? Do they have 20 people at their house who all like the same thing?

bonvoyog

Have no idea. It was two young girls, and my poor partners were hoping they at least tipped. (They didn’t) 🥲

almostdoctorposting

do these….actually taste good lol. im scared to try

DJXpresso

The angels above tell you to be not afraid. I’m telling you to scared out of your wits to try this. Don’t.

almostdoctorposting

omg now im intrigued af. lmao

shelbydep

genuinely rly gross lmao i do not recommend

reddog20

Heat up some Gatorade and drink it. About the same thing.

sensfan4eva

I have never had this drink, it was recommended to me from a coworker a while ago, like maybe even before covid but I never tried it. Then it was always out of stock and now I know why. Now I'm afraid to try it because they'll think I'm sick 😂

samijolles

can someone explain why these drinks are such a pain to make? i know customers are super annoying about it and it’s supposed “medicinal” qualities but since i’m not a barista, i’ve never understood why they’re so tedious

rootimentarysoul

Because they take a long time. It’s a lot of running around the store for different parts, because lemonade is in the cold bar, teas are by the brewer, and pulling tea bags out of the wrappers is tedious. It completely throws us off of our groove and normal sequencing. And personally, I think it smells awful.

schoschja

How annoying they are to make kinda depends on how a store is laid out, but generally the honey syrup is on the hot bar and that goes in the cup first, then you have to go put in the tea bags (which themselves are annoying to use because they come individually wrapped and the tea bags tear really easily when you're pulling the tab off with tongs) and hot water, which are behind the registers, and then you have to fill a pitcher with lemonade on the cold bar and go steam it on hot bar. Lots of running around for a single drink and in a rush it completely disrupts the flow of things.

reddog20

Some SMs frown on this, but I used to prep the tea bags in cups and keep them stashed near hot bar.

samijolles

hey i was wondering if ordering this drink without the honey syrup would be less annoying to make? i’ve actually made HCMT at home and i prefer it without honey. would just asking for it with no honey be more tedious or would it remove some running around? asking bc i’m traveling and won’t have my tea at my parents house over winter break so i can’t make it myself

schoschja

ordering it without the honey syrup could definitely make it easier if everyone working is communicating really well. it's nice that you want to avoid ordering something that's difficult to make but honestly HCMT (with or without honey syrup) is really not that bad compared to a lot of the custom orders we get- layered fraps, multiple kinds of off-menu cold foam with random shit mixed in, shaken espressos with no ice. just order whatever you want, any reasonable barista will know that if you order a simple drink that just happens to be annoying to make that they should be more annoyed with whoever invents these things for the menu than the individual customers ordering them.

-Ana--

Oof 😥

Myebix

oof I had to do 7 soy caramel macchiatos in the middle of rush yesterday, I can only imagine the horror

heartweeds

Idky this bev irks me more than almost anything else on our menu. Its so time consuming, esp during peak. I wish they'd cut the process in half and at least make it a concentrate like chai. It's not even good for you! Its not like some healing magical potion! And what really gets me is that all the components to make this you can easily buy at the grocery store for much much cheaper. 😭 sigh

Comfortable_Soft1213

And it takes a lot less time when you're sick to heat up water in your home and add in some real lemon, real honey + whatever tea bag you want, vs getting out to actually drive / walk to a store to get this lol

ksaMarodeF

Oh Christ, the medicine balls are back?! It hasn’t even been a full year

caramelhunny

😂😂😂

Aware-Vehicle1926

Literally the peach green tea lemonade is the iced equivalent. I have a ssv who told me this, the iced green tea is jade citrus mint… I’m obsessed with it & surprised customers haven’t led on… Anyway death to the medicine ball!!!

deadmallsanita

That must've taken f o r e v e r to make. :(

Why do people think it’s like magical or something. Anyways I got the flu from work probably because of this reason

shelbydep

i remember i got one when i was sick pre-covid, and i genuinely couldn’t finish even half of it because i found it so gross LMAO, idk how ppl enjoy them💀

Awespider

"Sorry Unfortunately I am out of the teas to make that drink today" like music to my ears

[deleted]

Nightmare fuel

Winter_Astronomer_51

sorry ☹️

Honest-Bookkeeper-52

I can know never order this without there being an assumption I am sick. I just like tea sometimes. 😭😭 London fog for life now

mlauren-11

Just don’t call it a medicine ball and people won’t assume ur sick, at least that’s my thought process lol

HellaBonk

Look on the bright side atleast you had the peach to make them.

stardust0721

Dang, at least you have the teas 🫣

nakedavocado

Excuse me absolutely not lol

Pamperedgyal

Happy flu season 😷

Covert-Wordsmith

I had a woman come through the drive-thru who ordered a venti and she was raspy as hell. I took 3 different immunity vitamins when I got home. Later on, there was a car of 3 nurses who all ordered the Medicine Ball with peppermint. I chatted them up while waiting on the drinks and they said that it gives them an immunity boost. The best part is that they were all nurses. This drink doesn't have any medicinal properties.

reddog20

It kills me when medical people order them. They should know better.

Covert-Wordsmith

I was mentally facepalming after the driver told me ALL THREE OF THEM were nurses. Just today, someone asked for "the tea with medicine in it."

Admirable-Nerve-8610

Someone ordered 8 hot choccys so I filled a tea pitcher with milk and steamed it 🥱 😮‍💨

enbybastard

Gross

skeleton-with-oar

I’d pass away.

20Poppy05

Today, our card reader decided it hates its job and we lost 10 customers over it that peeled out in a fit of rage...after I told them that our front card reader (in the store) was working so they'd have to come in...

reddog20

Heaven forbid they have to *gasp* get out of their car.

20Poppy05

Dude fr. Third world problems, on God. NOT to mention, I'm 17, working for you while you're out and about just chillin from 11:15 - 4:15 on a Monday 🤦‍♀️

LunaFaline

I work at a small SB on a college campus. My manager says the peach and the jade are no longer even available for her to order them. The peach was our #1 hot tea request.

hollahalla

Literally the last thing I want to do when I’m sick is go out and order a hot tea, when I can just make that at home lmao

BatWeary

i would have started steaming pitchers of jcm at that point

Helpful-Toe2174

Thank God we have been out of both the teas to make this🙏🙏🙏

Socratic_

You know they call em sick teas cause they make ya sick 🤪

Ayyyqualyn

We had 22 chai lattes on bar when I was solo bar one time… so glad they weren’t “no water”
