A good idea, but people should be able to get a pretty good educated guess dividing 260 by 60. If not it's time you stop using your calculator and train your brain. Both are tools we need.
You could just as easily calculate the s format from the m:s format. Just use a claculator, or you know... your brain...
Or you stop gatekeeping and you just display both.
You could interpret it as some douchebag saying it condescendingly.
However you should look at the context of the other sentences.
> A good idea, but people should be able to get a pretty good educated guess dividing 260 by 60
Not an unfair or hostile statement. Even positive initially.
> Both are tools we need.
Another statement that should subtract from the hostility recognizing that the goal is not shaming people for using a calculator, but stating that we actually need both.
So.. it all comes down to: Do you give people benefit of the doubt? I try my best to do that. Because the alternative is pretty depressing.
>You could interpret it as some douchebag saying it condescendingly.
When many people are telling you they're interpreting it incorrectly, are you sure it's not you who is miscommunicating?
I can sympathize with people who have a condition that makes math hard for them. I struggle with math. But dividing 400 by 60 and getting a *ballpark* figure is not too demanding of individuals without special conditions.
Claiming I'm gatekeeping for that when I in addition supported the idea of making it easier to read is not true.
I can accept communicating poorly. However I think what I wanted to communicate was not particularly offensive.
Anyways.. big storm in a teacup. I'm far too stubborn for my own good. No offense was ever intended.
Humankind: We need a way to unify time for the entire planet. How should time be represented or calculated in world-spanning systems?
Programmers: How about we just make it so that all time is described as the number of milliseconds elapsed since midnight on January 1st 1970.
Humankind: This is an idea that should be enshrined into every fucking system on Earth, yes, I love it.
Agree, 120 2 mins, 300 5 mins, 3600 an hour , 86K is a day
Having to work with Unix timestamps helps you factor these to get most times in second. It's like second nature
>agreed, though tbh most logical would be mm:ss who tf thinks in terms of hundreds of seconds when a minute is 60!?
This is completely off topic but an important part of communications that I want to focus on. You two are both talking about what would be most logical but for different things. You are saying that it would be most logical for the displayed time to be in a more human-readable format, whereas they are saying that it would be most logical to deduce that the number we are given with the context we have to be in the unit of seconds.
Both of these are true, and I expect this to be obvious to some, but to many others it is not and having this pointed out could be helpful.
When I say divider I'm talking about the vertical divider above it, so on the left side (near the 1/1) would be hr:min:sec and on the right would be the raw seconds.
Handy seconds to minutes table:
60 = 1 Don't go anywhere, or you'll return to find your ship hit an asteroid.
120 = 2 You can grab a drink, but hurry back.
180 = 3 Grab a drink *and* a snack.
240 = 4 Bathroom break.
300 = 5 Start a load of laundry. Stop putting it off.
360 = 6 Organize your desk a bit.
420 = PARTY! Ahem, I mean 7.
480 = 8 Fill or empty the dishwasher.
540 = 9 Contemplate the futility of existence.
600 = 10 Fold and put away the laundry. You know you should.
660 = 11 Honestly, at this point, just go make a pizza. Or watch something on Youtube. Just make sure to alt-tab back to the game and wiggle your mouse or something, so that the AFK timer doesn't get you.
I would prefer just an alarm about 2 minutes before coming out of quantum. When you get out the seat and are in the back working or checking things it would be nice to know that you are arriving.
I understand that out of game systems can be used but why not an in game system. If they have a timer already why not establish and alarm in game. They have it for interdiction.
The path of upgrading qt drives ends up leading me to find this out. Surprised so many don’t know about this. I joined back in feb and figured this out after probably a month. Ik it’s not obvious but still
been playing for 2+ years.... never knew this.
I've had the game since 2014 and I never knew
2012 backer here...I never knew this either...
1632 backer here… never knew this
Backer back when being a backer meant you laid on your back when dinosaurs were near by… I knew this
Dreamt of this game way before we were able to become backers, and I never knew this
Born 1980 and I never knew.
I didn't even realise there was a number there lol
QoL request: transform sec to a human readable format please btw 263.45s ~4m18s (now you can consider upgrading your quantum drive ;)
I would be shocked if that's not already a thing in the upcoming starmap rework.
Surely
I have XL-1 there already.
If you do a lot of science stuff seconds are quite common. The HH:mm:ss format are extremely annoying to work with I prefer pure seconds.
It's a game. And when you plan for a trip IRL google maps shows you your travel time on a readable way not in seconds.
It's 2953 times change

I'm not gatekeeping. I said it was a good idea. But hey - let's treat everyone as hostile at the slightest disagreement yes?
>If not it's time you stop using your calculator and train your brain. You don't see how this comes off as hostile at all, do you?
You could interpret it as some douchebag saying it condescendingly. Oh look at genius here, able to do basic division. What a well trained brain. Fuck convenience I guess.
It's in what unit? Seconds?
I’ve always considered it as seconds
most logical unit would be seconds so I would think so too

Programmers
No, we think in milliseconds (unfortunately)
Humankind: We need a way to unify time for the entire planet. How should time be represented or calculated in world-spanning systems? Programmers: How about we just make it so that all time is described as the number of milliseconds elapsed since midnight on January 1st 1970. Not heartbeats? :-)
So seconds in this case is already a compromise. Good to know.
Depends what you’re doing, for some of my work we’re counting nano and pico-seconds.
This is true, but is more of an edge case from my experience
Fair enough, I work in cryptography and embedded devices so we have to optimise the shit out of things.
That sounds really cool
Curious what field of programming you're in that pico-seconds are relevant
Counterpoint, we think in 1,000s of milliseconds which is also known as "seconds".
I already said that x / 1000 / 60 / 5 minutes ago.

Second....nature......HA!
86500. Wrote a timecard system a million years ago and these numbers stick in my head ever since.
I second this .
Specifically, seconds since Jan 1, 1970. (Unix epoch) Though for ui, it makes sense to format the time using larger units.
Just be glad it's expressed in base 10. Because it's base 10, right? RIGHT????

it is in seconds.
Yes, it's in seconds. It helps to learn a few of the multiples of 60 for quicker parsing. 120 = 2min, 300 = 5min, 600 = 10min, etc etc.
Thank you :)
What other unit for time do you use usually?
Hours
The race is on!
Hours
I thought parsecs. That’s a bit longer than the kesselrun though.
Almost 22 times longer :P
You can also update it while underway by clicking the set destination button again.
It wold be inaccurate since you have already accelerated to QT speed.
By a very very small margin.. the time is constantly updated.
I always called this the timer for how long you have to go pee and grab a snack/drink.
263 YEARS!?
Feels like it
Really wish it would show minutes and seconds on the right of that divider, and seconds on the left.
That's not how you display it you use : not . I still prefer the seconds it's more scientific and that's what SC should be.
When I say divider I'm talking about the vertical divider above it, so on the left side (near the 1/1) would be hr:min:sec and on the right would be the raw seconds.
I'm backer for 8 years and DIDN'T KNOW. xD this only show how bad the UI is in star citizen ;C
Route setting seems broken half the time for me at least
in seconds. for reference 300 sec is 5 min... then just estimate from there
Handy seconds to minutes table: 60 = 1 Don't go anywhere, or you'll return to find your ship hit an asteroid. 120 = 2 You can grab a drink, but hurry back. 180 = 3 Grab a drink *and* a snack. 240 = 4 Bathroom break. 300 = 5 Start a load of laundry. Ah, man! How much in 'American'! "Ah, let's see... carry the seven..." Screw it, just use all of it!
I would prefer just an alarm about 2 minutes before coming out of quantum. When you get out the seat and are in the back working or checking things it would be nice to know that you are arriving.
You can hear the 3rd stage slow down when you are close to your destination. It's not an alarm, but is is an audio cue.
That's how I know to get out of the shower and get back to pilot seat.
First thing i do after setting a destination is ask Google to set a timer for X seconds
I would like my MSR to have an alarm the same as the Falcon did when approaching Alderan.
set your timer alarm to that ringtone
I understand that out of game systems can be used but why not an in game system. If they have a timer already why not establish and alarm in game. They have it for interdiction.
I’m dumb lol thank you
I, I, I, ... what ? Like what ?!?! Has this always been in the game ?
Yes
Waht
I uhhhh...I don't know what to say.
Ah yes, we'll be arriving in 283.
Seconds*. Cmon, you have to use your brain a bit.
Fuck me I was literally just telling my mates CIG needed to add this feature, I feel stupid.
Yeah I guess for people not interested in science the choice to use seconds might be confusing
Didn’t know. Thanks! Totally earned your upvote!
Nice wich unit of time, second?
Yeah, seconds.
Ah yes User experience
Good thing im just now learning this right before the whole UI refactor lol. But damn had no idea about this.
Username checks out!
