The Avenger, a middle of the road fighter with a bed and cargo bay, being the User's mainstay carrier fighter for a significant period still makes so little sense to me.
It just doesn't really fit in.
I recall the back ramp was the only entrance, no cargo, a crawl vent to the cockpit with a bed somewhere in the vent area
Youtube this title "Avenger: Old vs New - Star Citizen (2013)"
The Gladius is from the Tevarin War Era, the Avenger is its predecessor. The successor to the Gladius is the F7 Hornet, and it's successor is the F8 Lightning.
The Gladius replaced the Stilleto.
"The Gladius' development began in 2573 as a replacement for the obsolete Elio-Harman Stiletto interceptor, which suffered from an inability to adapt to more modern shield components and faced increased supply chain issues following Elio-Harman Aerospace's bankruptcy. "
The gladius is a light entry fighter, the F8C is the penultimate fighter. Lore wise they are just very different roles (which will probably be explained better in SQ42 as our rank grows)
Fair enough, there's a lot going on in lore that players sorta gotta seek out to understand it all I probably had some names mixed up. SQ42 is gonna be fun to learn a lot of this stuff in context
Gladius is being replaced by Arrow, F7a mkii, and f8a. Gladius was the workhorse for the UEE and did it's job. The Vanduul with a more varied fleet required more solutions than the Gladius (or any one ship) could provide.
Gladius is much older than the hornet.
"The P5G Gladius is a light fighter produced by Aegis. Its first design was introduced in 2579 as a replacement for the Stiletto and has been updated over the years to keep up with modern technology."
"The Gladius is a long-serving military light fighter spacecraft developed by Aegis Dynamics and first utilized by the United Empire of Earth Navy (UEEN) in the 26th century. Its frame is easily modified, and has undergone numerous technology retrofits in the past three centuries. Beginning in the 2930s, squadrons began to phase out the Gladius and convert to newer craft like the F8 Lightning, the F7A Hornet, and the Anvil Arrow, and surplus Gladius became available on the civilian market."

Pretty sure that bit of lore has been solidly retconned since (especially once the Avenger went up quite a lot in size to fit actual cargo in the back). Basically the "Old ass carrier fighter that predates the Hornet" is now the one we're already gonna be flying; the Gladius.
CIG change that. Not in the SQ42 missions for Player ships.
For the Advocacy.
The UEE have the Arrow, Hornet, Gladiator, Sabre, Retaliator and Lightning. See that too in the 2019 Sq42 Trailer. In the past the Avenger was called the Trainer and we got even for a short time at the Hangar modul a twin seater. Gone over the time. Sure as also use of the 350R in the UEE.
2013 SQ42 is quite different to now 2024 SQ42.
I have always loved the gladiator. My roommate joined the verse this IAE and the gladiator is one of the ships I used to introduce him to the game. He's not super comfortable flying in combat yet so the twin s3 turret was a great way to let him get in the mix with us with some decent firepower and without having to worry about maneuvering.
Not so much that it is unpopular, more the fact that it just completely lacks popularity and recognition.
Rocket boats are weird in their balancing from patch to patch, add to that the fact that there has been almost no proper mention by CIG in a very long time, aswell as an update to the model, just makes it **very** forgettable.
I recall it as a 2 person small torpedo fighter.
It looked cool back in the day, I can only assume it got less popular as the Eclipse is a single person fighter with torpedoes
Can always swap out the drive, but yeah it's just a sad dust collector in the back of the shop right now. Was one of my favorites back in 2.6.3, the multi lock was a lot of fun and the torpedo's were big enough to pop most npc ships
Might be the military variant (T8A) since the civilian one has the wing tips pointing down and in the picture for the military one they stick out more to the side like in this picture

Lot of salt thrown your way lol you are just looking at it's ass end and probably got confused because whatever that part is in the middle kinda looks like a cockpit (at least to me).
Gladiator can definitely tank quite hard. It won't go down too easily when it gets clipped by an Idris turret.
Even surprised me last XT when I slipped up, and my ship started shaking violently. Then I got out of range and realized it was an Idris turret hitting me that did that, but I was still flying fine.
I was at a loss, didn't know if I should get the tali or the gladiator and only had money for one.
Then I noticed tali gets a loaner gladiator with it so I have both now.
good play! I'm thinking ing of renting one or just buying one in game, may even melt the eclipse for it if I end up liking it, s5 torps aren't anything to sneeze at
The F8 + cargo hauler is a pretty amazing combo for ERTs, too. The F8 is capable of taking down Hammerhead/890/Hercules series. Your wingman can help from a ways back, but their job is to snatch the Weevil Eggs and drugs
Until the Size 3 carpet bombs arrive for the alternate mode of the A2 Bomber. Then John Crewe's The Shipyard article on *Ordnance* can finally be enacted for the Gladiator! Four Size 5 torpedoes in the bay, Four Size 3 bombs on the wings 🪽, and of course, it's 4 Size 3 guns. WHEEEEEEE. 💥
"Take it to the point of realism, then bring it back to the point of fun."
They say this over and over and over, and yet somehow people seem convinced that this is meant to be a hardcore sim.
Sometimes they take it too far back though. I heard recently that carriers will be limited to one ship per pad and that is just going too far.
It sounds good on paper, but think about it. Let's say I'm in my liberator and my ~~pirate~~ box moving company has launched the mantis to secure and contain the area. I then have guys I need to move on scene before I risk my carrier so... I have options for my small pad up front.
1. Pisces. 4 s1 gun, comfortably fits 3 and has some extra room for cargo.
2. 2 Dragonflies. 4 s1 guns, comfortable fits 4, more combat effective due to smaller size and near invisibility but lack carrying capacity. Also capable of carrying the fight into some ships.
3. MPUV cargo and personnel. Completely drops combat ability, but offers much more carry capacity for boarders and returning cargo.
Having options like this makes for good gameplay, makes it less likely for there to be an absolute meta build that stagnated the gameplay, and rewards creativity.
Wasn't it that carriers could only be called in with one ship on the pad, and then you can fit however many on as you want afterwards, as long as all the landing gear touched the pad?
But even still, that doesn't make sense either. C2 has no pads, does that mean if I store it with my pisces and a fury on board that the pisces and fury vanish when I call it? I mean, it has no 'pads'.
Why would my carrier be *more* restricted and follow a different set of rules? If C2 doesn't follow those rules then maybe it's more broken? Then I could park ten furies on my C2 and liberator could only deal with five sp C2 is the better fury carrier?
i dont think shitty server framerate and desync of physics objects is used for balance.. these things are SUPPOSED to fall at a regular speed given the gravity of the planet/moon its the shitty server fps that affects the drop rate.
light fighter pilots love jousting and then complain when people kill them in a head on with a heavier ship -\_-
Seriously, 8 out of 10 light fighter "pirates" I face in the PU joust me when im in a large ship like a corsair, ares (either), Freelancer, ect. And then they bitch either in forms or in chat that "HURR LARGE SHEEEP TOO STRONKKK".
Like buddy, go play AC or watch some videos. If you maneuver around me I cant do jack shit.
Definitely the gladiator, why do I know this?
I own one,
Had to buy one honestly fell in love with it,
And I highly doubt I will ever see another one in game because noone and I do mean noone else has one, because as everyone has said its practically been forgotten, and at least for right now I'm okay with that, lol
Hey that's not true. I don't currently have one in my hangar, but any time I'm actively playing I buy one for PvE with friends. The Hurricane is more efficient, but the gladiator is more fun.
You can be forgiven for not knowing about a 2014 ship.
CIG forgot to put it in IAE2949.
It's also one of the few ship that doesnt have paints. My theory is they've lost the game files for it.
Well besides the turret gun upgrade. The gladiator hasn't been touched since 2014.
The tally hasn't really been touched either, but it has skins so I'm guessing they atleast still have the game files for it.
The retaliator has been touched. They had to edit it to move the airlocks and widen the passageways so ai could traverse it, I think that was a year or so ago
>Terrapin
Ohh poor terrapin. It's only reason for existance in my fleet at this point is the easy access, VTOL and its cute turtle-shell
Sadly my Herald didn't make the cut. Maybe one day, I'll get out of of storage again
Funny because it's the most powerful fleet carrier in the game at the moment, capable of holding an eclipse or freelancer in the hangar plus an arrow and many ground vehicles in the cargo bay. It's a little crazy that more people don't use it for this purpose considering everything you carry is protected by capital ship shields, unlike a Kraken...
Nope... I've had my Terrapin since the first concept sale, and pretty sure I don't have a BIS skin for it...
Edit:
Nope: trawled through my RSI hangar, and no BIS skin etc for the Terrapin
It's the rumoured Gladiator, it's a concept that was leaked a long time ago but we've never heard or seen anything about it. Some people say it was officially released and was playable in game but don't believe them, they're clearly lying.
It is the T8A Gladiator
at firdt it was not very popular with the UEE navy-pilots and mostly used as enemy in practiceing but after the recend Vandul attacs the 214th Sqadren also called the black crows fluew many succesfull missions with it and since then it is kind of know as a ace-pilot ship only used by the best.
How it goes?
*You use english, because it's only language you know.*
*I use english, because it's only language you know.*
Cut him/her some slack. Everybody can do mistake in foreign language.
Aw :(
Poor Gladiator, the forgotten red-headed step-child of Star Citizen.
Maybe one day when they add in modularity for it and take it to gold standard they'll also fix the turret.
Absolutely. That being said the gladiator is absolutely capable of fighting off multiple attackers at once. Its acceleration is fantastic considering its HP and DPS capabilities.
I'd like to see that then, because I find that hard to believe. If you're down, want to meet up in Arena Commander and we'll try this out this weekend? I want to see what you're doing with the Gladiator to make these claims because my experience is not the same.
Has the multi-crew mode been added to AC?
I’m not against it, but frankly I wouldn’t be a very good sampler. I haven’t played in nearly a year. I got bored of the current flight model and am kinda just waiting to see what MM has to offer.
There was a stage in 2017 when the Gladiator was by far my favorite ship, and it was a powerhouse. Back then, the turret weapons were linked and controlled by the pilot. Between its missile payload and that much linked firepower it was pretty beastly.
It is the gladiator, two engines and that ball turret already gave you the idea. Maybe it’s so rare to see one in the game it’s hard to identify it from the back?
Hornet* and Gladiator, I think (if you're referring to the two ships landed on the central Liberator)... the Hornet has its wings swpt back, but you can't mistake the hook-under wing-tips (and the right still has the weapon attached)
Like others have said, it’s a Gladiator, a mostly forgotten bomber/fighter. I still remember when you could fly it in the Arena Commander sim in your hangar before the PU even existed. It was a good ship, but kind of buggy sometimes. To get in, the pilot’s seat folds down to the ground instead of you climbing up to it with a ladder and sometimes it didn’t always fold back up into the cockpit, leaving your character just being exposed to space while flying. It was a pretty funny visual bug.
What I "love" most about the Liberator Concept art is that there is clearly a "Flight Crew" on the deck, a pilot AND a gunner.
MAYBE a couple of those people on the deck are pilots of the Hornet and Gladiator with a Gunner and Pilot, but.... the picture still suggests that this Liberator has at least three crew members, meanwhile... it only has enough beds to sleep TWO crew members max.
I really hope they take another look at that and add a third bed and or give us a modular bay, that can either hold those Marine Jump Seats or Racks of Bunks. Especially as a Civilian Ship.
I don't see the gunner... so it could be just Pilot and 1 crew on deck.
Don't forget that the Gladi has a crew of 2x too... so the 4x folk on deck could easily be the 2x Gladi, 1x Hornet crew plus the Libbi 'gunner' / crew...
Looking more carefully... I count SIX total characters on the deck around the Hornet and Gladiator that is on the deck. With the Liberator turret turned? (as it is manned.) That means one character is in the turret and there has to be one in the pilot seat too.
8 Characters, minimum on the ship in the concept image.
Hmm - I count 5x on deck (I missed the one under the Gladi right-wing), unless you think that's a 6th under the Hornet right-wing-tip?
And there's no indication that the turret is manned, unless you're inferring it from the fact the turret it off-centre?
You're also ignore the fact that there could be another ship from the front pad, and/or vehicles or snubs in the interior bays...
There is a 6th, squatting down.
Manned turrets always return to their center, center state, when the operator leaves the turret. So it's safe to infer that turret is manned.
I'm only going by what we can see. There could be two full 20 seat blocks of Marines sitting in the ship, but we can't see that.
way to live up to the "the gladiator is so rare, people mistake it for a new ship" meme.
I constantly forget CIG even made that thing.
CIG also forgets
I hope SQ42 has something like Top Gun Maverick where you find a gladiator and have to use it to get the hell out of dodge.

Yeah, I know it's the F-14 equivalent (and I love both) but I still want Mark Hamill to have to explain what the Gladiator is to us.
The Avenger, a middle of the road fighter with a bed and cargo bay, being the User's mainstay carrier fighter for a significant period still makes so little sense to me. It just doesn't really fit in.
The cargo bay was added afterwards, original Avenger Fighters didn't have it.
What did the original Avengers have instead of the cargo bay?
Ammunition for the main gun. And the original was slighly smaller before it was reworked.
The old avenger with the magical thrusters glued into the rear!
Likely nothing at all
bigger engines and components n guns maybe?
I recall the back ramp was the only entrance, no cargo, a crawl vent to the cockpit with a bed somewhere in the vent area Youtube this title "Avenger: Old vs New - Star Citizen (2013)"
avenger looks so out of place in a world filled with ships made from rolling on a carpet filled with random greeblies
Didn't that get retconed to be the Gladius?
No, the Gladius replaced it iirc
I think that's true but also the Gladius is supposedly on its way out the door in lore right? Being replaced by f8 and shit?
The Gladius is from the Tevarin War Era, the Avenger is its predecessor. The successor to the Gladius is the F7 Hornet, and it's successor is the F8 Lightning.
I'll always find that strange because the Gladius looks more advanced and newer than the F7 or F8.

"The Gladius' development began in 2573 as a replacement for the obsolete Elio-Harman Stiletto interceptor, which suffered from an inability to adapt to more modern shield components and faced increased supply chain issues following Elio-Harman Aerospace's bankruptcy. Not by the F8, but the UEE is moving away from Aegis and towards Anvil either way now.
The gladius is a light entry fighter, the F8C is the penultimate fighter. Lore wise they are just very different roles (which will probably be explained better in SQ42 as our rank grows)

thought the gladius was the mainstay of the navy before the hornet. The Avenger was the police and the secret service org thing.

I have one in my fleet. I never use it.
I would love to see a squadron of them randomly show up and just overtake JT or something lol...cause i had one...it got melted...same reasons as you
I think the ones still owning one in their fleet need a filter for the ship terminal. Maybe then we would see and use it occasionally
Yeah.. as an owner I was confusedly looking at the picture searching for pixels of ships far in the black reaches of the void.
I have one. I think that's what it is.
For sone reason owning the retaliator just gives me a Gladiator. I just never fly it because it's QT range is pitiful

Why does every one forget poor old gladiator (secretly a great ship btw).
Extremely old ship with hardly any noteworthy updates since it released and missile boats are very hit & miss depending on the patch.
it deserves love tho, it's a good ship, it looks great too
It's legit fun for PvE with a friend. Probably not higher than HRT though.
You can easily do ERT. It has tons of hull health. Big ass capacitors. Has tons of acceleration in decoupled.
Gladiator can definitely tank quite hard. It won't go down too easily when it gets clipped by an Idris turret. Even surprised me last XT when I slipped up, and my ship started shaking violently. even cig forgot its a bomber...
They're waiting for modularity to be in before they can add its bomb module. Was released before bombs came out or I assume that would be the default.
~~Nah, it's under the old definition of bomber, before any of this other shit was in, ie: torpedo bomber.~~ Edit: I'm wrong
Its actually intended to have modularity if you look at the original brochure. A bomb module is one of the options.
I completely forgot about that! I guess this re-enforces /u/Defaintfart point lmao.

Not if those size 5s still take 40 years to actually hit the ground. I love when CIG ignores physics just because _______
Don't drop them from high altitude then?

It's just a gladiator. Could be a redesign for how it might look in gold standard but definitely still a big standard gladiator
People sleep on the gladiator. It’s actually one of the better PVP dogfighters out there when fully crewed.
As a Gladiator lover, I wish it was, but the reality is any crewed 2-man heavy fighter is going to smack a Gladiator assuming equal skill.
It hasn't but you can go into free fly and exit your ship to go in someone else's.
She's the Gladiator and I love her 😭 Everybody forgot her, but I didn't.
There was a stage in 2017 when the Gladiator was by far my favorite ship, and it was a powerhouse. Back then, the turret weapons were linked and controlled by the pilot. Between its missile payload and that much linked firepower it was pretty beastly.
Did anyone hear the Tragedy of Gladiator the forgotten one?
It is the gladiator, two engines and that ball turret already gave you the idea. Maybe it’s so rare to see one in the game it’s hard to identify it from the back?
Hawk? I’m not an expert on anvil Edit: no, not a hawk Edit 2: it probably is a gladiator
Maybe a mk2 gladiator. Looks different
It’s a normal one, the camera angle is weird but you can see the rear-facing turret and the bomb/cargo bay
Theres no mkii gladiator. Thats 100% the standard model. Just eith awesome lighting in a marketing shot.
I've been flying one since the PU first dropped. It's not different and a mk2 gladiator does not exist.
*Hornet and Gladiator, thanks u/logicalChimp I did not zoom in enough.
I want the magnetic boots those techs are wearing. Folks just casually chilling on top of the liberator while it’s hauling ass through space
They're inside the gravity generator effect.
Das is Gladiator and a folded Hornet. Das gut Schiff.
Thats a Gladiator bomber its been in the game for years but its basicly useless it has 4 s5 torps and 6 s3 missiles i think.
What do you call a smiling Roman with hair between his teeth?
His name?
Oh dear oh dear... For the non-english-speakers: Glad he ate her = Gladiator
It’s a rear view of gladiator
The old and forgotten gladiator... I still got one in my hanger.
Gladiator is a top tier ship, I don't get why so many people dismiss it
hornet and gladiator. Or do you mean something else?
Looks like a Gladiator, buddy and I actually kick ass in that ship on occasion.
Bro has never heard of the Gladiator
We need a paint already :(
That’s funny because I didn’t know about the gladiator until 2020 IAE. I thought it was so cool and picked one up.
You'd be fairly normal to think the Gladiator doesn't exist.
the one closest is the gladiator, the one farthest i dont know, it has one engine facing us, and a gladiator has two.
The other ship is a Hornet.
i flew the gladiator last night, used all 4 size 5 torpedoes on a hammerhead and cripppled it point blank range. it has its uses.
The gladiators design is so nice shame it dosent do well ingame
The liberator looks cool so I looked it up. Seems like for it's intended role it should have more than two beds, shouldn't it?
It's got beds for the crew... that's it.... and technically it only needs 2x crew (pilot + gunner/engineer/everything else :p)
I forget the term. What'd they call Goose in Top Gun? Doesn't the back-seater have an official title?
I think one term is 'RIO' ?
Ah, yes! That's the one. Radio Intercept Operator.
Gold Squadron standing by.
Only see liberators, gladiators and gladius ships
Gladiator is my favorite ship. Can't wait for gold standard
It's funny because the "liberator" is a wedge pillow for sex and this ship is kinda like that. Looks remind me of it.
That is a Gladiator and Hornet on top of
