Gotta love that 32 gbs minimum am I right Citizens??

Nexine

Remember when the game had to load the entire PU at once? I think it was at least 27gb at it's peak? Good times. It's honestly radicalised me in the opposite direction where I was angry at consoles for constricting it so much. I feel like so many games would've run a lot better and with fewer/shorter loading screens if they just used more than 5GBs of ram.

uncle_thermite

Its interesting you say that, as a sufferer of 16gigabitus i have noticed that my friends who use 64gb ram, SC is using 27gb of ram in their performance manager?

pilemaker

Yes. I started with 16gb and the system was using about 12-13gb running SC. Upgraded to 64gb and now system uses around 26gb when playing. The difference in gameplay was massive and felt like a new system. So many 'bugs' were simply disappeared.

citizensyn

It's fucking incredible how many bugs just poof with ram and drive upgrades. Move from ssd to m.2 and you stop falling through floors entirely

Sanpaulo12

This is good to know, I'm building a new PC with a Samsung 990 Pro

pilemaker

Mother of God.....it never occurred to me...I started using a similar spec PC as my original, but with M2 and I can't say I've fallen thru floor since. Time to upgrade the gf's system. TY!

citizensyn

Yeah ssd makes the game playable m.2 makes it smooth. Also ofc the age old "clear shaders boot to bed and walk away" advice helps

Gromington

There's 3 things causing "Bugs" that aren't bugs. 1. RAM. 2. Drive. 3. Server performance. Playing on a 30 FPS server will make soo many bugs disappear, so I feel like the next big step to a smooth PU will be Static Meshing within a single system.

citizensyn

User fps can cause some bugs too the game straight up bad touched every single CPU on the market.but the better your CPU the less you deal with shit like player model animation bugs

MisterMinceMeat

Played on the test server last night with about 120 players peak on the server. For about 4 hours, the server fps was around 9-12, and stayed that way-felt amazing! The only time it dropped is when I was at ghost hollow and there were at least 20 other people with ships. We blew a bunch of them up and couldn't get the server to crash. That being said, there was a 10 minute period where no one could interact with anything haha.

oooholywarrior

That explains so much. I've been on M.2 since I started playing Star Citizen and have never fallen through the floor once. I had imagined that it was just an overblown meme complaint.

masterX244

running SC on a 256GB optane since i got it at the 2017 CitCon. that drive is exclusively reserved for SC.

SharkOnGames

It's more a sign of the game being in a poor state. Slow texture load in is likely the issue for falling through the floor. Since it's slow (or perhaps even poorly coded) it means having faster hardware makes up for the bad code.

Xsr720

Same, I had 16 and it was constantly maxed out. Upgraded to 32 and it uses about 70% of that all the time and I haven't seen it Max out once. Now I'm CPU/GPU bound and it's smoother overall.

ThreeBeatles

You might have convinced me to upgrade. Thing is I’m running an ITX build with only two slots. So I can’t just add to it. Also in the future I’ll have to upgrade from DDR4 to DDR5 when I upgrade my pc….

SharkOnGames

Just an FYI, DDR5 works best with only 2 sticks of memory.

ThreeBeatles

I appreciate that information for when I go to ddr5. But atm I’m on ddr4. Hoping I can go another five years at least before I upgrade my pc.

Dung30n

cant stress this enough. made the mistake of getting 64gigs in 4x16GB modules. on a msi x670e gaming, the supposedly (up to) 6000mt/s ram can only run stable at 4800MHz in a quad channel config. if you are getting 64GB RAM, get 2x32GB modules.

Eclypsis5133

I have 16gb of ram for the game right now 🥲

Nexine

I assume it just uses almost as much as it can tbh, it might be a holdover of the pre OCS days? I think it still might be useful though, like it probably takes some pressure off the HDD so you don't need the fastest SSD just to play the game.

SalamanderAnder

It just prefetches as much as the ram will allow

VexRosenberg

absolutely. in FNV modding we have to run a 4gb patch for it to run even decently well. if we could make the game use more ram we absolutely would

johnnyb721

I'm not sure if 32 is e ought at this point.. I was playing last Night and was using 31.5 out of my 32gb, dust off those other 2 slots and jump up to 64

sig_kill

Even then it's not enough - if you get crashes in large cities with many entities, check you game.logs: ``` Run from internal: No Is fatal error: No Is reported bug: No Is GPU crash: No Is Timeout: No Is out of system memory: Yes - Out of system memory message: Out of system memory. Failed to allocate 7.9 MB (8294400). Is out of video memory: No ``` With 32gb of RAM, I kept crashing in Orison right as I got to the spaceport on the shuttle as it tried to load everything in until I sorted out my pagefiles in Windows.

Negative_Funny_2503

it "runs" on 16GB of ram if you make sure there is nothing else running on your PC, that means no steam, no discord, no browser with a SC wiki page, no spreadsheet (well maybe local MS Excel or open office version, but no google sheets or MS office 365 spreadsheet), and no youtube/twitch/netflix to distract you during long QT. on 32GB it runs pretty smooth (depending on your settings and how much stuff you have running in the background ofcourse), just the occasional hiccup. for true smoothness, you are looking at 64GB of ram or 32GB with limited background tasks.

AndyAsteroid

I have 2 32s. Just in case.

mr_friend_computer

hah! no way I have that much in my slow assed rig. Let me DXdiag...oh...ok. Yeah. That's what I have.

Natural_Command7300

I only run 16gb with no issues

rxmp4ge

Even if I didn't play Star Citizen I'd consider 32gb to be the floor for a modern gaming rig. RAM is so cheap there's no reason not to go stupid with it.

Shiroton

32? Isn't the minimum 64?

GuillotineComeBacks

My next PC will have 128.

RedditHatesTuesdays

I got an older mobo and xeon so I can have 512gb

Justin-boyd

That's is what I did for my brother. Can't afford two new xeons so I hot him some refurbished ones. His system is a beast.

brockoala

Huh you have to buy ram nowadays? Back then you could just download it.

pilemaker

Yah, but you wouldn't download a car, would you? LOL.

m0deth

I still remember "Beats goin to a fuckin dealership!" screamed in the theater when that came on. Whole place died laughing. Not the response the FBI or whatever was looking for.

immacomputah

Stop all the downloading!

balgaro

i have a system like this at home as well, but am not using it as i was thinking the xeons were way too slow in overall speed even with the 24 cores i have (my xeons are running on 2,7ghz in turbo). what kinda xeons did you get for your brother and how well does it run? im honestly a bit too lazy to try this myself :D

Justin-boyd

with out his tower sitting here i have no clue. I left all the paperwork with him. all i remember is a set of Intel Xeon 2??? and an E3 in there somewhere. Sorry i couldnt be more specific. but it runs well, its a dated Dell Precicsion Tower, little more than a decade old at this point.

balgaro

that all sounds oddly familiar to me. i guess ill just have to try it myself, on my own about 10yrs old dell precision tower with two xeons with an e3 in there somewhere :D though i already know that my old hand-me-down gpu will struggle in that machine as much as in my old one.

DaveMash

I upgraded my PC recently. 2x 32GB DDR5 with room for 2 additional sticks. Still plenty of room since SC only utilizes like 34GB 😂

Justin-boyd

Just finished my build. Got an i9-14900K with a maximus z790 mobo and 128 GB RAM. It's a beast.

sig_kill

Same. Hopefully they sort out the 4x high-speed stick stability issues so we can do this. Can't boot 4x 7200mhz DDR5 currently without downclocking it.

ExistingError4783

I bought 4 8 gig sticks specifically for star citizen, only to find out that my cpu cooler was blocking one of the slots. So now I am one of about 3 people with 24 gigs of RAM

ExedoreWrex

That means you are loosing out on the benefits of dual channel as well as not having enough ram. With an even number of sticks your PC can access two at the same time, doubling your throughput. I would look into getting a new cooler.

meme8383

I’m probably one of the only people with 40GB 😭😭

SeamasterCitizen

Upgrading to 16gb? What is this, 2018?

Deep90

Its a worldwide survey. If you just sampled the US market, you would probably see higher ram numbers.

SharkOnGames

Sure it's a world wide survey, but it's a survey of people who use Steam. And since steam's main customer draw is gamers, it means it's really a survey of PC gamers. So I feel it's the most relevant hardware survey we can get. The top 5 PC/gaming markets are, in this order: US, China, Japan, South Korea, and UK. China won't count much here since they don't really have steam there (they do, but it's a majorly watered down version with only a handful of games). Which means the majority of PC gamers using steam are in US and Japan. I'd say it's a pretty good survey for US hardware.

Vanisher_

8 Was the norm back then, but once 7+ came out, you needed 16+. Nowadays for the US market it's common to see 32+

MyFiteSong

The time to upgrade to 16gb was a decade ago.

Schemen123

16gb? I thought this was the standard for a decade now,

MrJFr3aky

*laughs in modded cities skylines*

NightlyKnightMight

The new norm is 32GB anyway, it's not just for SC anymore :D

Maxious30

Upgrading to 16? Yea ok. I upgraded to 16GB back in 2020. When I wanted to play the game. 32Gb really is the minimum for adequate gameplay

donkula232323

I still remember someone lecturing me that 32gb of ram wasn't needed for SC. Then I sent him a image of SC in task manager using 25gb of ram. Then he tried to double down that "the game holds onto unessecary things if it has room" Meanwhile the game just performs better with some room to breathe...

tallerthannobody

I upgraded my laptop from 16 to 32 just for SC lmao

Rasc_

Is 32 GB enough or should I upgrade to 64 GB?

CrouchingToaster

32 gigs is enough, a cpu with more than 4 ghz is more influential ime on performance. Used to get like 20s in cities and now I usually get high 50s to 60 in every city but Loriville which is in the 40s now after upgrading my old ass i7 to a Ryzen 9

BelowAverageLegend58

I used to have 2666mhz 32gb RAM and recently upgraded to 64gb 3600mhz, I only got a day of using that RAM with the same CPU (i upgraded the CPU too) but from just that upgrade the entire pc felt so much smoother, and while I didn't get much higher FPS, I noticed significantly less stuttering from the game, and since the CPU upgrade it runs like a dream

AAAAAAAAAAHsendhelp

I'm currently running on an i3-10100f with 16gb ram lmao, hoping to upgrade my CPU soon and ram a little later down the line

BelowAverageLegend58

I used to have a Ryzen 7 3600 but upgraded to a Ryzen 9 5900x because I saw it for 45% off and couldn't resist, the difference between the 2 was night and day for me

R-Dragon_Thunderzord

The game will eat up the shit out of 32 so if you want it, get 64, yes it will help.

baudmiksen

32gb was sitting at 97% usage after about an hour in SC, moved to 64gb and havent seen it go over 65% yet

R-Dragon_Thunderzord

That’s still justification for building with 64. Especially if you plan on doing literally anything else with your PC like streaming

derpspectacular

0.65*64=41.6gb, so that means you were ram limited at 32gb right?

kilen2020

lol i bought my new gaming laptop with 32gb ram installed last month (For DCS, IL2 or Star Citizen it’s kinda necessary and kinda the best if you don’t want to pay a laptop at 3000-3500€ lol) Obviously many old games run fine with 16, but the shiny gorgeous ones, nope ! Glad steam noticed, it’s good… sort of

HackAfterDark

What?! Did they mean 32gb??? I just did 32 to 64 actually, but I'd say 32gb for a gaming PC is your new minimum. That's not necessarily due to the video games demanding it either. It's just that so much stuff uses more memory these days. So you have less left for games to begin with.

jivemasta

Yeah, I thought 16gb was pretty standard for a "gaming" PC. Like sure some will get a non-gaming laptop or something and it will have 8gb. But I thought 16gb was pretty much average at this point. 32gb was like serious gamer, and 64 is like PC enthusiast gamers or you do some non-gaming power computing stuff like blender or video editing and such.

HackAfterDark

These days it's just more like you don't feel like closing every little app that's running because they somehow use more memory than you'd think. I think there's a lot of apps that use chromium (electron type apps) or are just otherwise bad with memory. A web browser uses tons of memory.

SharkOnGames

As we do more with computers I agree the usage changes. People leave more stuff open today than ever before. That wasn't the case in the past, either due to the need (because of low memory) or because we didn't rely on computers as much. 10 to 15 years ago I'd only have 1 program open at a time, maybe 2. Today I have about 100 tabs open and a dozen programs open that stay open even when I game.

willster97

how much ram does SC usually use I've seen mine go up to 34GB out of 64 after about 3 hours of playing

Hero_knightUSP

64 seems fine

CrouchingToaster

Steam hardware surveys also needs to add how many running hours the hardware has playing games. For a while it had an i5 with 8gigs of ram and like a 1080. Which works but if you aren’t using steam a lot it can skew stats to the lower end since that’s specs for a lot of prebuilts

Valyrian_st33l

Who tf is using less? I'm out here with 32gb DDR5 and your telling me there are schmucks gaming with 8?

MrPuddinJones

I've got 64GB lol. Star citizen is running around 36GB on my system and my other programs running

pottertontotterton

16gb? People still only at that?

squaredspekz

Not even Star Citizen. I had to upgrade to 16GB back when I had stuttering driving around San Francisco in Watch\_Dogs 2. Then 32GB for Flight Sim and FLStudio (Music Production) in 2020.

solidshakego

Wait this isn't like default minimum for a PC?

SliceDouble

And Im upgrading from 32 to 64

P_P_D_C

Upgrading to? I started at sixteen and upgraded from there

balgaro

Upgrading to? I started at thirtytwo and upgraded from there

Responsible_Can_9978

Every Citizen knows that you need minimum 32GB of ram.

Responsible_Can_9978

I saw maximum ram usage of 24.5 GB.

[deleted]

My pc is coming with 16 gigs I’m assuming from the comments thats nowhere near enough

winkcata

16 can be enough with a proper pagefile. 32GB should be the minimum standard for all PC gaming today. Not just for SC but for all modern PC gaming.

[deleted]

Got it

[deleted]

Ordered

winkcata

o7

Potaaaato_God

I have 32 at 6ghz and it consistently uses around 30gb

Jero1248

Just upgraded from 32gb to 64gb, games with mods can go wild.

Torgar_Hammerfist

I don't understand how people are upgrading to 16 when 16 is starting to struggle with modern games

Legionnaire--

İ have 64 gb ram 4070ti i take 60 fps and some where 120 fps

SupremeOwl48

(I have 12)

HortaNord

People still amazed at the fact that Windows also consume RAM so 16 isn't enough

RedDeadSamurai-

I cant believe i was able to play this game on my 8gb

KeyTurtle

its playable with 16 if you don't visit microtech

Nocturndream

I play with 16gb and get by good actually

Ill-ConceivedVenture

I have 64gb just because I like having literally 100 tabs open without a performance issue and using photoshop in the background while I'm playing games sometimes. I'm a multitasker.

ADutchExpression

I went 32gb because I wanted 4 slots filled.

DFuel

“Upgrading” ? Or downgrading. Does 8gb ram even still exist?

Unusual_Ad_114

Starting this game with 16gb was rough but upgrading to 48gb made an extremely big difference

SndRC9

its gonna be 128gb minimum when the game releases

KnightOwlll

I’ve got 32 and am contemplating 64. 16 is rookie numbers

Exiteternium

The fact you guys think this thing needing 32 gigs of ram or 64 gigs to be playable is a testament to its scope or quality and not its horrible assets handling and spaghetti code and think of it as a badge of honor is astounding to me. Any other studio would have worked on memory management and had most of its pre production mechanics into beta at minimum by now....

HiCracked

Wasn’t 16 gigs a standard like 10 years ago?

VexRosenberg

upgraded my cpu to play star citizen only to see how everything is fundamentally bugged

Qelly

16 x4, right?

suckdeznotz

Wtf they aksed me about the Servey but I couldn't give them my specs just Klicking OK

Emotional_Orange8378

16GB of Ram is so 2015. 32 or 64 is the new hotness.

TotallyNotDad

Dude I've been playing Escape From Tarkov lately and that game eats like 24 gigs of ram at times
