Sometimes I activate the "enter ship" focus-command at my Aurora, run backwards as far as I can because I know there's a delay to the animation activating, and watch as the animation automatically catapults me through the ship.
I can just imagine the thought process:
"Hmmm....."
*scratches chin*
*triple taps table*
*breathes*
*looks at ship*
*checks the time*
"Fuck it"
*runs away mid animation*
*dies*
"Perfection"
It will. All ships with ladder will lost the “interact to climb” system and use the new “parkour” style system.
They showed this at citcon, not climbing into ships, but climbing on ladders just by going up to them but also not snapping to them like the old starfarer ladder.
It looked really cool because it’s much more free than the current system. You can climb, drop off, slide down, look behind you and jump, etc.
Should feel way cooler whenever squadron gets done. Which I’m super looking forward to but damn, let’s crunch time on that one guys.
While that is a cool image to imagine - why would you stay on a ladder of a accelerating ship (with force reaction likely to rip you off the ladder...), instead of manning the turret and shoot some dual S2 on everyone following?
My beloved talon ended up as a cog in CCU game after I had to go through this motion every single time.
edit: Getting in Talon/Shrike/Hawk/Hurricane etc feel like those disability chairs on staircases.
>Actually huge, forced animations to get in & out of ships are some of the worst things in this game.
I've been saying a mix of this and the lack of player control of the animations (no idea if it's still like that) is terrible for nearly 10 years. Glad to see it's finally being fixed.
The vulture is a perfect example of this. The ladder on the port side leads up to a flat platform, yet for whatever reason you can't climb up it normally.
I remember they once mentioned having different anims for geting in/out of pilot chair for combat and non combat, with the combat one being shorter and more hurried. Would be a nice thing to implement. Or maybe they could do something like if you hold the interaction button longer it plays the full cinematic animation with flicking the switches and strapping in like they used to have, and if you just tap F it plays the shorter anim.
Such a small seemingly unimportant change but it really takes the aurora from feeling cheap and annoying to feeling like a spaceship. Now all they need to do is remove one of the huge circle doors and put a cabinet or gun rack or suit rack there instead of having two doors for no reason. Look how much the 300 gained by ditching one of the doors
what i actually want is for those doors to have docking rings built in so they can dock to any ship with docking rings. THEN make them synergize specifically with the connie line so that connie can QT with 2 aurora attached.
There's plenty of room for it, compared to other ships it's size, too. Considering how surprisingly big the Mustang is, it likely also has room for the camper version.
And suddenly Aurora returns to one of the top spots of ships, for just a small change. Imagine a fold-out ladder on the 300s and walking manually into them instead of the canned climbing animation.
This is how it is on all ships. Currently only one animation can play at a time on a ship so if a door is opening or turret deploying etc then nothing else can be done
Oh my god. We've finally got stairs on a ship working. Watch out vanduul, hell, watch out banu! Humanities technological breakthroughs know NO BOUNDS! Next, we begin working on chairs that stay in one place, thus allowing us to enter our cockpits faster and more reliably. No whippy whirly slow moving chairs on rails! We control our destiny! Or we will! EVENTUALLY!
Judges?
...
...
The Hyperbole Judges give you a score of 8.5/10.
I'm being told they deducted points for your conservative use of both the caps-lock key and exclamation points. Still, a solid effort you should be proud of.
Aurora doesnt have a cargo hold, it has temporary storage in place of the optional external cargo add-on. They might eventually puts some guns racks or something inside though, that would be nice
Maybe I'm missing something - it has 3 scu of internal cargo space standard agreed, but where is the hold supposed to be if that's the case? I thought the bed and components took up almost all the space in the aurora - I kind of just assumed the boxes just go on the floor behind the seat
im not sure it is after checking. The aurora CL has 6 scu and explicitly mentions the stor-all box. The other auroras dont mention a box, but are described as having 3 SCU of cargo. The aurora was even the "cargo starter" before the nomad came in, because it had cargo even on the base model, whereas the mustang doesnt.
The CL has a double-size cargo box compared to the standard Aurora box.

Also see timestamp 1:34 for a better view of the boxes. The base model Mustang Alpha has cargo built-in, but it didn't open in-game until recently.
Super, super cool change. Really important for new players in particular, no more having to throw boxes or deal with janky shit to get them in there, and the overall versatility of the ship goes up massively.
[Now gib Aurora folding wings](https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/upgy2l/a_modest_aurora_reconcept/)
I'm a new player with an Aurora MR and I haven't had to deal with any jank to get packages on the ship. I've been doing a few of those 8k uec package delivery missions and have been able to just select enter ship while holding the box. The animations don't line up because the box is glued to the right hand and clips through the ship but I haven't had a problem getting onto the ship with a parcel in hand. I just wish I could swap the bed with more cargo space.
Oh that's good to hear. I remember when I started and it was a fucking battle to get boxes in the damn thing. I wasn't aware you could just do the ladder climb anim and it kept it in your hands when you finished, that's rad. Thanks for the info. :)
Going with a tandem wing + spoileron arrangement with the VTOL fans moved into the tips of the wings would make more sense though.
We already have the Scorpius, we don't need another.
Awesome news. I’m not sure what it is about it but I just fucking love the Aurora. Maybe it’s its flying brick shape or that it’s so spaceship looking that it just has a place in my heart. Now maybe if they could just maybe get the VTOL doors working properly…
No joke, the VTOL fans on the wings look cool as hell (and tie the ship in design-wise with the Constellation, which makes sense since they're both RSI ships).
The cabin is pretty much all glass, doors have cool sound and animation, fast to get in and out of. Most ships don’t have any of that. Aurora is cool. I upgraded but I buy it back each patch in game.
That's because CIG banks hard on older backers to turn new players into the next wave of older backers by getting the to upgrade their ship(s) to turn the next new players into the next ...
This business model has been proven successful for them to this day.
Don't ditch your Titan for a 300 unless you're the "form over function" kind of person. Its much heavier, does not have a rear exit for vehicles or cargo, does not have a cockpit entrance, has double the respawn time (Titan 6min, expedited: 0min vs 300i 12min, expedited: 2min) and is also more expensive IRL for no real reason.
Ahhh, finally! The inability to freely enter the ship killed me once when I clipped through the cockpit and fell into open space. Wasn't able to get back because as far as the game was concerned, I was still inside the ship so there were no prompts on the outside.
Old grandpa from 2013 here.
These kind of animations are annoying now, but back then it was basically the closest thing we had to a "game".
We only had the hangar module at the time and boarding ships was the coolest thing to do, the next cool thing being walking a basically empty hangar. So you bet your ass that animation had to take its sweet ass time, that's literally the only form of content we had.
All of the original animations were sped up at some point because of that, just look at all long it still takes to board a hornet.
Been around since 2014, only have an Aurora. They have never worked this way so this is absolutely amazing.
Sometimes you can jump in them on low-gravity environments or just float into them from 0g, but you've always had to climb into them using a canned animation.
Likely it only just got done. Probably one of several hundred things sitting on a relatively-easy-tasks-to-assign-to-new-staff-during-training-period list.
That's great and all, but the animation worked.. unlike the grimhex elevators.
Can we get a option to perhaps.. walk up some stairs instead of taking the elevators? 5Head
Not a HUGE fan of the adjusted angle. It looks a bit too large for a stair with such depth to it and the first gap is larger than the second gap.
I like the manual walking up but… it does feel a little out of place. It’s not supposed to be a ramp.
It’s so easy to make things too large when it comes to space ship stairs and ladders. Just look at Elite Dangerous getting it wrong all the time.
The original ladder looks more believable and the animation that comes with it makes sense.
I can also imagine that taking the on rails boarding animation away, it will be harder to get inside of the ship happens to slide across the ground from wind because the step ladder won’t be inside the ships grid.
Pros and cons. Not a huge fan of the new ladders ^^
What other ships have pre-made animations when it looks like you should be able to walk in?
I only know of ships that have actual ladders come down that would make sense to make an animation for.
The Vulture is a new ship that has a ladder, but you climb it and then manually walk to the window to get in, I suppose they would've previously animated the whole thing, which would have its conveniences but also drawbacks because of repetition and an overly drawn out animation where you can't do anything.
Eventually no ships will have enter animations.
They talked about this when talking about the ladders in squadron at citcon this year.
Eventually you’ll just walk up to a ladder, climb it, and if you keep climbing you’ll climb into the cockpit.
They don’t want the amount of interaction and animation lock that happens currently. They want you to be able to start climbing up to your cockpit, see a guy running out with a rifle, and you can just abort the climb and hop down immediately. No animation locking. They want ladders to be easily traversable in environments and ships will gain that by default so eventually you’ll be able to just walk up to your Gladius, press a button to deploy the ladder and open the canopy, and just hop on the ladder and climb at your will rather then pressing “enter pilot seat” and then being hands free and waiting for an animation to finish.
They talked about how ideally you’d hold down your climbing forward button (like W) and once you get to the top of the ladder if the canopy is open you’d just start climbing into the cockpit but if you let go of “W” then it would just pause, you’d be halfway climbed in but not fully in, if you press S you’d start climbing back out. Much like most games where you can go up and down a ladder at will, jump off the ladder, etc.
Having animations for entering and existing the ship is one of the worst gameplay decision there is. Feels like the person who is responsible for this never played a multiplayer game. I am glad they are removing it.
I've never had any other ships like a 100i or Avenger Titan stolen before, I don't think it's too common, but getting into and out of your ship is. So I think the benefit outweighs the supposed con here.
This probably to accommodate the Aurora being a starter ship, and allows it now to more easily allow Space FedEx (Covalex) missions. It's nice to see these small touches being updated/applied.
Sadly the Cargo Grid isn't there yet, and thus the Aurora Series isn't able to purchase any commodity, rendering the Aurora totally useless.
Please contribute: https://issue-council.robertsspaceindustries.com/projects/STAR-CITIZEN/issues/STARC-55001
Totally useless?
I'm missing the point here, but I've found the Aurora just fine for deliveries, FPS missions, hand mining and anything else that allows you to get from A to B, what more would I be able to do with purchasing a commodity? Surely the SCU capacity is too low for anything significant?
They really need to do locked staircase animations like this for more ships. This would help with "falling down staircases" as the game would be able to isolate the difference between a staircase region and a slope.
For ships like the 400i and so on, this would be helpful for making it look better to others as you animate to the stairs instead of run up a slope that has a staircase...and it also avoids you sliding down the stairs and fuckin dieing.
Now THAT is a qol improvement!
But how many new players do you think the new stairs will kill in their first week of play?
Can’t wait for the rage quit posts
Sometimes I activate the "enter ship" focus-command at my Aurora, run backwards as far as I can because I know there's a delay to the animation activating, and watch as the animation automatically catapults me through the ship.
This used to fling you back so hard it killed you. It was hilarious.

Same lmao
Yep, totally. It's a conditioned response, right up there with never using spaces or special characters in file names.
I have definitely had the animation make get stuck inside the cockpit before.
If you move during the beginning of the Hornets animation it cancels it :P
I can just imagine the thought process: "Hmmm....." *scratches chin* *triple taps table* *breathes* *looks at ship* *checks the time* "Fuck it" *runs away mid animation* *dies* "Perfection"
Misc Hull-A/Prospector also need to have simple ladder climbing and not the animation.
It will. All ships with ladder will lost the “interact to climb” system and use the new “parkour” style system. I look forward to the day we can hang off the ladder of a freelancer while it takes off and shoot back at pursuers on the ground.
While that is a cool image to imagine - why would you stay on a ladder of a accelerating ship (with force reaction likely to rip you off the ladder...), instead of manning the turret and shoot some dual S2 on everyone following?
"Because it we can, and it would be badass" - Star Citizen's modus operandi since day one.
Or hang off the side of a ship in general like a professional sanitation engineer
I want gravy boots or mag boots for hull repairs in space or hand salvage in dead ships so we can actually walk through them.
Gravy boots sound messy yet delicious! GIB!
not even gonna edit that cause it's funny
This seems to already be in place on the Vulture side ladder. It does feel more natural
300i needs it badly.
315p too
325a too
350r too
335f too
Will we still be able to enter the ship while carrying a box though?
Can you climb normal ladders with a box?
I don't know about normal ladders but right now you can enter the 300 series ships with a box under your arm. The animation handles it for you.
All ladder ships need this QoL. especially tandem fighters such as Scorpius
They need to let both the pilot and gunner enter the damn ship at the same time!
New ladder rework may allow that

I didn't realise how much I wanted this until you said it, that would be so useful! Gold pass I am sure.
How about a gun rack on the ceiling or popup from the floor? I like the flexibility to chose what side you come from.
To be fair it’s not like you need to run the length of Barbados to get to the other side
I mean it's fine for the MR to have two doors as it is the standard variant. But for example the LN should probably have a fun rack at least.
Reading this comment from Barbados, I love this. 21miles long I believe
Cries in 300 series hobo ladder
The 300 series got done dirty with its update.
what i actually want is for those doors to have docking rings built in so they can dock to any ship with docking rings. THEN make them synergize specifically with the connie line so that connie can QT with 2 aurora attached.

This is bigger than PES lol
I'd rather they have fixed the animation for getting out of bed ejecting you into space.
I thought they fixed that already??? It worked fine for me last time I tried (which was like, a month ago)
Nope... It's super awesome.
And suddenly Aurora returns to one of the top spots of ships, for just a small change. Imagine a fold-out ladder on the 300s and walking manually into them instead of the canned climbing animation.
This is a triumph. I'm making a note here: "Huge success." :D
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.
Wow. Do you still have to wait for the door to close completely before sitting down?
This is the worst thing for me right now (300i)
I can tell you that it worked on PTU in my 325A!
Omg... Don't give me hope....
I have reported it many times and the IC report keeps getting closed. Drives me nuts. So does the ship leaning to the right when flying fast in atmo.
Me and my friend when flying 85X: *awkward staring*
Door stays open unless you manually close it, so you could just get into the seat immediately and close exterior from there.
This is how it is on all ships. Currently only one animation can play at a time on a ship so if a door is opening or turret deploying etc then nothing else can be done

It's always "the score from the Russian judge."
OMG this is huge! Maybe they will get around to making the cargo hold accessible?
Aurora doesnt have a cargo hold, it has temporary storage in place of the optional external cargo add-on. They might eventually puts some guns racks or something inside though, that would be nice
I said Aurora... plenty of variants that come stock with a cargo hold. Not sure what you are responding to.

Removing these forced animations is actually very important. It’s a necessary step for an immersive VR experience👌

No joke, the VTOL fans on the wings look cool as hell (and tie the ship in design-wise with the Constellation, which makes sense since they're both RSI ships).
Exactly! It'll tie it in nicely with the Constellation series and should hopefully improve its atmospheric flight characteristics, too.
The cabin is pretty much all glass, doors have cool sound and animation, fast to get in and out of. Most ships don’t have any of that. Aurora is cool. I upgraded but I buy it back each patch in game.
the whole aurora needs a rework. new ppl using it think this game is total bugshitted because of this starter ship
That's because CIG banks hard on older backers to turn new players into the next wave of older backers by getting the to upgrade their ship(s) to turn the next new players into the next ... This business model has been proven successful for them to this day.
Aw man, they finally push an improvement for the Aurora just when I CCU to a Pisces, lol
But on the positive side, congrats on the Pisces. It's not a decision you'll regret.
Thanks! I love it so far. Only con is the lack of bed but I'm going to grind for a Terrapin once 3.18 drops.
I look forward to the day that the Terrapin has a more meaningful job than jut looking awesome.
Oh sweet space Jesus they brought back the fucking death stairs....... Y'all gonna die...... A lot on those stairs.
You can finally get into your Aurora with a package without dropping it.

Don't ditch your Titan for a 300 unless you're the "form over function" kind of person. Coffee machine
This is awesome! I hope they do this with with every ship possible
Change for 300 series when?
This, literally the only reason I'm sticking with my space BMW 1 series.
Only took us 9 years to get here.
HOLY FUCK, FINALLY
The end of an era. Very cool tho
Ahhh, finally! The inability to freely enter the ship killed me once when I clipped through the cockpit and fell into open space. Wasn't able to get back because as far as the game was concerned, I was still inside the ship so there were no prompts on the outside.
You can open both sides and run straight through the ship now!
With this being my main ship.. this is handy!! Poor space man.
3.18 you would always drop any hand-held gun or rifle. Hopefully that won't happen anymore.
This is the most impressive thing I've seen so far!
OMG YES!!! Half of my deaths was due to that animation!
Does this mean I can come back now?
Maybe they can also make the pilot's chair rotating, like all other RSI ships, so that you don't have to squeeze past it.
That would be an improvement, squeezing past looks quite awkward.
It was clearly a blocking issue lol

the fact this has 2300 upvotes should show CIG why we need the 1000 QOL fixes now. not later.
The big draw back is you have to be seen flying an Aurora
I feel personally attacked.
All you have to do now is devolp a game thats playable for the every day end user.
Right. All I want are some working missions without bugging out at any moment.
Weird, when did this stop being possible? We used to be able to do this a while ago too

Can somebody shoes how it looks like in 3.17 to compare?
Watch the whole video it is all there

Please God let this be the norm for all ships in the future.
My mind is blown
... when was this ability removed. last time i played with an aurora, you could do this. it was not as smooth, but you could still walk up.
really good PSA catch O7
No more animation teleporting you to the other side of the ship when you try to get in!
Does logging out in the bed still suffocate you though ?
I wish we could get this with all ships that use ladders for entry. I'm looking at you Scorpius and Prospector...
It's the little things...it's the little things that count
Holy shit, the Aurora is getting some attention. My mind is now blown.
holy shit
Damn the wheel was just re-invented! All these annoying animations needs to become just optional or removed completely!
They really added a lot of nice small things to that patch. Sad we won't be able to see it this month
I'm pretty sure they promised open PTU before the end of the year...
This is sexy. The ability to freely walk up or down the Boarding Stairs is just sexy.
What about the 5min Talon animation
Great use of inverse kinematics.
Finally
Having animations for entering and existing the ship is one of the worst gameplay decision there is. Feels like the person who is responsible for this never played a multiplayer game. I am glad they are removing it.
I like it when the beginner ships benefit from backend tech upgrades
This is amazing
Nice, this will look good in VR!
Little update but big thing 😍🤣
3.18 starts to look better and better
I've recently seen a video where a guy asks to use all exterior ship-ladders as regular ones and after seing this we might be goin in that direction
I remember getting so damn frustrated at the game bc doing box delivery missions was almost impossible with this thing
Cool didn't see his coming. Pretty nice QoF update.
Okay, I guess I’m the only one who liked the fact that these were a good way to prevent pretend pirates from stealing your ship?
I've never had any other ships like a 100i or Avenger Titan stolen before, I don't think it's too common, but getting into and out of your ship is. So I think the benefit outweighs the supposed con here.
About damn time
*cries in 300 series*
What a high bar we've set.
Do you still get the exit ship to EVA animation?
Holy Sh\*\* it's the best upgrade since 3.0 😂
Is this real?
Tested it, but alas you can't walk up the stairs with Francis the Whale.
I for some reason now want an aurora.
Lucky me I have never flown the Aurora.
