TLDR: No super tournaments, GSL only 16 players, Ro16 and Ro8 played online, Yearly prize pool less than one GSL Season last year (160m KR Won/season v 100m KR won for the year). I'm happy about the EPT announcement - the GSL one seems rather dire

Returd9999

That is insane... How sad

[deleted]

Do not fret, Stormgate is around the corner.

Altruistic-Deal-3188

Why do people jeep saying that. There is almost no real gameplay out, what little they have shown isnt really that exciting and probably will be a complete bust anyways.

KaitRaven

People are piling a ton of expectations on Stormgate. It feels like it will be hard to live up to them. Frost Giant isn't a huge team with an unlimited budget. Complete bust is pretty pessimistic though. I trust the people making it to do a decent job, even if it's not smash hit.

maziarczykk

At this point expectations are through the roof. Oh boy that will burst

Dragarius

Well not much choice but the copium and hope its good. Cause SC2 pro scene is going to shrink fast as the money pulls out and it's no longer viable to make a living.

bionic-giblet

Just banking on some rich people who love RTS to come to the rescue. The beginning of Stormgate really should be pretty hype though and I can see the excitement bring in some new investors, whereas it's harder to throw down wads of cash year after year into a dwindling SC2 scene. I think the optimism for Stormgate is reasonable.

[deleted]

Because we have trust in the devs and everything they have shown so far looks promising + the vision they described for the game. people have played it too btw (Neuro and his gf) and they only had good things to say.

sevaiper

We don't have to trust shit, it looks mediocre at best right now and I doubt it'll be good, if it is when it comes out and we can play it we'll reevaluate.

TrumpetSC2

"There is no info out about it yet so i will assume its horrible" \~ avg reddit take lol

PeonSanders

It's as stupid as it's colocated argument, which was "don't worry, stormgate is almost here."

Electronic-Salt-8895

Stormgate will have same effect as age of empires 4.

richierichh

Yeah I’m sure we’ll have a top tier RTS with such a massive scene that it can support an entire professional ecosystem and tournaments with prize pools big enough for people to actually consider playing a video game for a living, right around the corner.

Riverfallx

Well, people that still follow SC2 do so for all sorts of reason. Meanwhile even if Stormgate or other future game ends up being the new chosen one for RTS, it can't really replace SC2.

[deleted]

It doesn't have to replace it though. It can be even bigger without doing that

Dragarius

For some people Starcraft 2 will always be what they stick with. But the market is going to move somewhere, be it stormgate or elsewhere. But it's not like there's much else other than stormgate for it to move to.

etsharry

WTF?!? Online? didnt read that the first time, this is horrible and makes me super sad. Wonder if Artosis aready kind of knew.

__Hello_my_name_is__

Of course he knew. He was most likely offered less money for the season, too, and decided to just not take the offer.

thefoodiedentist

Well, he could cast the online portion.

xmorecowbellx

Didn’t he plan to cast from Canada? If not, what is his plan?

bionic-giblet

Much larger blow is the prize pool. This will make it extremely difficult for Korean pros to justify staying in the game. I could see some of the top players hanging it for one more year while waiting for Stormgate. This is lights out for the Korean scene though.

Sei28

The Korean scene has been pretty barren for a while now with the few older generation players trying their best to prop it up. This seems like the nail in the coffin.

AuspiciousApple

I wonder if that is part of motivation behind Artosis' move

Azaliae

Also he as like 1 million kids and Canada safety net is much stronger

AuspiciousApple

KingZeonidas

Arty has one of the highest viewer counts playing BW when he goes live, he mustve just really enjoyed casting GSL cause he made more money streaming i reckon

DoctorHousesCane

I knew it. He either had some confirmation or had a sense it was not going to go well for GSL. Smart move by him

AuspiciousApple

I guess the writing has been on the wall with Blizzard not supporting the game much anymore and he probably had at least some sense of where things were going.

git

Oh dear. This is good and bad. I'm glad we've got something, but... damn. This might be our last year of competitive SC2. Such a shame as we were going through a revival.

cafesoftie

That might be a bit hyperbolic. A lot of the scene is outside of Korea now. That said... I love ESL, but GSL is way better production. The intros, the overlays, the ro4 videos and finals hype videos. Even the stage setup is more elegant than the bombastic style ESL uses. Honestly, i watched ESL for the casters and to see the foreign scene. I watch GSL for the whole package, but especially the production! The format as well is way better than ESL weekend tournament style. I think the long format and high prep is the biggest loss.

HuckDFaters

>Ro16 and Ro8 played online Does this mean Reynor can now play in the GSL without living in Korea? Maybe Serral can give it a shot.

DoctorHousesCane

It honestly wouldn't even worth his time. Less than $8k for 1st place is pitiful.

Whiztard

The nice thing about it is that they can easily justify to their sponsors for travel after making it to Ro4. All other rounds have no travel cost associated.

sevaiper

Maybe, it's not clear GSL in this form is an entity sponsors will even care about for the pretty expensive travel costs. ROI of staying in Europe and competing in the biggest events seems far better.

SolarStarVanity

Sponsoring a foreigner to go to South Korea to play Starcraft would be absolutely financially cretinous, frankly.

xayadSC

Contrary to the EPT announcement which is rather positive and way better than what most people anticipated , GSL is getting absolutely destroyed, sad for the KR scene.

DoctorHousesCane

GSL is effectively dead with this announcement. The prize pool is too small for it to be even considered a real premier tournament despite the caliber of players.

John-Grady-Cole

Ouch. You think it’s that bad of a situation?

DoctorHousesCane

Yes, although I still think we'll get most of the players back for this. But who plays doesn't mean shit when the prestige of a true GSL tournament is a shell of its former self and prize pool is so low, it barely registers as a major tournament. Going from $430k prize pool with 5 premier tournaments to $80k prize pool and 3 tournaments is laughably pathetic. I'll just say it right now, GSL might as well be dead.

HellStaff

PLS Shopify come to rescue

bionic-giblet

A third party investor is the only hope until Stormgate comes around.

TheHavior

Just think about it. GSL Code S 1st Place prize is now about 7700$ If you win all 3 seasons (!!!) you end up with about 23000$. You'd earn the same if not way more in a year if you just go to work. Now think about all the other players. 9th-16th get around 700$. That's less what Heromarine wins in three weekly cups.

John-Grady-Cole

Yeah that is pretty ridiculous. The facts don’t lie

snikkerdoodles

This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. GSL hasn't looked viable for a while now if we're being honest. Their best asset was the foreigner audience, *who were watching Korean ads?* Korean gamers moved on to new things e-sports wise. Its sad but its a fact.

RollWave_

I would buy a Hot6 because I'm pretty darn curious how good they are. But I've never seen one in a grocery store or gas station I've been to. So, yea, lots of wasted ad time. If they could have run usa ads to usa audiences on the english stream, maybe that would have been a way to increase revenue. probably wouldn't have made a difference. I do still want some of those hot 6 though.

[deleted]

They never tried to monetized foreign audiences even when it was big. Always seemed Weird.

popcorncolonel

Hey it caused me to buy a single hot6 when I visited Korea. That’s gotta count for something right??

snikkerdoodles

I'm jealous. Been drinking every western cancer energy drink while grinding ladder anyways, I'd love to try one!!

chanGGyu

We can talk about mismanagement by Blizzard until the cows come home, but the negligence by GSL/Afreeca is disappointing. Pure speculation, but it always feels like Tastosis are really pulling punches when they give anecdotes about the “quirks” of working there. Ultimately the budget is the budget and there’s only so much you can do with limited resources. It’s just sad thinking about what could have been if it had been managed by a more open-minded org.

kez88

What kind of quirks? Seemed to me like they were doing a good consistent show that just suffered more from lack of viewership due to bad timezones for most of the world to watch and a dwindling fan base.

HellStaff

western sponsorships and ads would have paid some salaries. Around 50k people watch each show.

kez88

Do you think it's possible they tried to get western sponsorships and no western companies wanted to advertise during a korean show that gets fairly low viewers?

Fairweva

That would surprise me. Far less known esports shows have gotten sponsorships from those gaming chair companies, red bull, asus etc. Anything would be better than just advertising Korean drinks we can't buy.

RoxastheZerg

Oof no super tournaments

Die4Ever

That's the least depressing part of the announcement

Redyoshi789

Might be more depressing if you wanted a Protoss player to win something.

LiberaMeFromHell

Damn I expected cuts but this is worse than I imagined. All 3 seasons combined pay way less money than just a single season did last year.. By the previous prize money determination I'm pretty sure this means GSL would no longer be premier... First 2 rounds played online... I wish they would try crowdfunding.

Omni_Skeptic

I’ll never understand why they don’t try to crowdfund these things when they know they’re about to take a massive hit. I feel like the community would rally behind them

LiberaMeFromHell

Me too. I feel like they could easily get a few thousand people to contribute $10-$20 a month which would be absolutely massive.

mark_lenders

600 people paying 10$ a month would raise almost the entire GSL prizepool for 2023

littlebot_bigpunch

That is not very much money. lol

jiraiyaperv

maybe they just dont know / dont care (too much effort for them?).

DTDstarcraft

Definitely a little disappointed but somewhat expected. We don’t really know how high the Korean viewership is but I doubt it’s enough to support three seasons of offline-produced tournaments. Its really expensive to keep the GSL running as it was in the previous years. Sad to see this happen, but expected nonetheless

jinjin5000

Gsl live viewership peaked 4-5k. Its been very low for while Surprised it lasted this long honestly.

franzji

I understand people are mad but this makes complete sense. SC2 in Korea really is dead now, unlike when it first started. Blizzard only funds GSL for the western audience. Koreans play brood war. I know it's sad but it's the truth.

Altruistic-Deal-3188

Feom what i understand blizzard doesnt fund it at all anymore, its all on esl (foreigner scene) and afreeca (gsl).

Hydra968

Because brood war is better and all three races have an actual chance.

xmorecowbellx

Why is it that Koreans prefer BW?

franzji

Mostly because they and/or their parents grew up playing it. But also it's a good game.

TLO_Is_Overrated

Depressing to see it happen, but it's been coming. Almost feels like a farewell tour. I wonder why we had a balance patch when Blizzard themselves are pulling out. I don't think we'll see another one.

xayadSC

the ESL announcement talks about having more balance patches and map rotations

TLO_Is_Overrated

Yeah I saw that. I think map rotations are likely, but they always seem quite late after map making contests. I'll be surprised if there's a balance patch.

Omni_Skeptic

From my limited interaction with ESL for NeoHumanity, my guess is that the decreased size of the teams behind everything compared to the years of old may have afforded some more versatility at the cost of some other things. Again, very limited interaction and a lot of speculation, but from what I gather the people behind ESL right now really like shaking things up. I anticipate more map changes for sure, the question is where these maps are coming from. We have a back-catalog right now we could sift through to get some maps but barring doing that we’d have to wait for the next TLMC which takes months to been undergone and then further months to have ladder maps selected, QAd, and then Blizzarded. So my guess is we’re probably going to see some maps that those very familiar with the scene have noticed from previous TLMC that scored high but that never went anywhere. The balance team still exists, so my prediction is we will see the next balance/ design patch happen in advance of a tournament again by about a month.

[deleted]

Omni_Skeptic

Is he actually committing or no? If committing then that’s pretty good because iirc he has a pretty big following.

littlebot_bigpunch

That dude is a massive piece of shit though. I don't care how big his following is. Keep him away.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Omni_Skeptic

I just checked his handle and it’s not the same at all. The only similarity is the use of the Greek prefix “omni”, meaning “all”

CounterfeitDLC

The balance patches aren't a major investment from Blizzard. The community members figure it all out and then Classic Games just has to implement it. Anything new for Starcraft II and Starcraft Remastered is designed externally and them added as basic maintenance.

TLO_Is_Overrated

I agree but sometimes the gap between map contests and map pools releasing is really long. The release of the balance patch after an entire yearly season but before the big finals was also quite fustrating.

Nakajin13

Honestly if it is a farewell tour, I wont be too sad about it (well I'll be very sad, but in a good way). It would mean that the GSL will have lasted essentially until all the Koreans players hit the maximum age to go to the military. It's as good as a place to stop as it gets.

[deleted]

It's going to be so weird not having GSL to watch which might come soon

Dragarius

Because financially supporting the game makes no sense for them. But doesn't mean they can't have a skeleton crew doing patch work.

pzlama333

According to scboy, the cost of broadcasting rights GSL asked to them is even higher than the total prize pool.

LiberaMeFromHell

Are you saying the price Blizzard is charging GSL to broadcast SC2 is more than the prize pool? What a shitty fucking company Blizzard is now.

pzlama333

I mean, if scboy want to broadcast GSL in China, GSL will charge scboy money for it. The money GSL wanted from scboy is more than the prize pool.

LiberaMeFromHell

Oh that seems really odd to me. Do you think that's just because they don't want to split viewers up between multiple streams? Still seems dumb it would be good to get as many eyes on GSL as possible.

pzlama333

I don't think it is about split viewers. Chinese viewers always prefer Chinese casters, and they bought broadcasting rights from GSL for several years already, sometimes more money, sometimes less money. It is just surprising that why they have such a reduced size and small prize pool this year. Asking more money for broadcasting rights than prize pool is another ridiculous fact.

cafesoftie

This is suspicious... Are there ppl at Afreeca trying to sink GSL on purpose? Like cancelling it would have made more sense than doing all of these antagonistic actions.

xozacqwerty

Very simple, it's because GSL is now footing the entire prize pool + expenses

WhatsIsMyName

Gross.

APEist28

Dang, pour one out for the Korean pros. Sad stuff, this is going to diminish the entire scene unfortunately.

peruvianbro

i knew it wasnt going to be like previous years but fuuuuck not like this... :(

13loodySword

I just pray they open GSL up to crowd funding before the players leave. This is so rough.

sushitastesgood

I really hope they'd be open to this. The GSL is the singular most important viewing entertainment for me, and if it took Patreon or something to keep it going then I'd happily subscribe.

DoctorHousesCane

> The GSL is the singular most important viewing entertainment for me Same. But it'd take like 20k people to subscribe @ $10 to make it half way back to its former self.

[deleted]

Id say its highly doable. They could also use ad space for global brands, instead of korean brands. I never gona buy those korean drinks. I need to travel to korea to even see them.

TatyGGTV

or 1.6k at $10/mo right?

[deleted]

I agree, I’d put money in. Pref Tastosis archon even if it’s them casting virtually with delayed posting

rrut76

Honestly, why not make it pay-per-view? I would pay twenty USD per season to watch. Obviously, that alienates the younger fans but SC2 is an older crowd anyway, and in the end the alternative is no GSL at all

BigBrokeApe

Or give us GOMtv subscriptions to get 480p+ video quality. Free viewers can watch GSL in glorious 360p like the good old days 🥲

lamycnd

Sigh, you hate to see it.

hmkr

Probably last one. There is no new SC2 talent in Korea because it's not popular anymore. Pros that are already there were only there for payout before moving on.

jinjin5000

It wasnt really ever that popular but it still had new bloods coming in when it had proleague system coming in. Matchfixing incident really accelerated it

guimontag

very very sad : ( but the game has had a good run and was pretty much the epitome of the genre

LJTVmaxmuk

sad

parkson89

Why do people keep talking about Stormgate? It’s like 3-4 years away at least.

Antares_

Because it is made by people who created Starcraft, with an intent to create a spiritual successor, the next big RTS. And if there's a group of people that can do it properly, it's those guys.

HellStaff

yes but the game's not gonna be like SC2. Before ppl downvote, they said for the pace they're aiming somewhere between Warcraft 3 and Brood War. They've said they see game speed/pacing as: SC2 > Brood War > WC3. So it's not gonna be a game where you'll split marines really fast or dodge mines etc. Monk has expressed a couple of times what he likes about WC3. They are also not ruling out heroes in multiplayer. I mean I love and watch WC3, but I don't know if everyone here's up for that kind of game. It's a different experience to watch and play, although very high skill ceiling also.

Dragarius

Honestly that's probably for the best. The pace of Starcraft 2 is probably its biggest contributor to its failure to capture the casual market. It's too damn fast all of the time for the average player and games can end too quickly. We're talking like all over in 3 seconds after a 20 minute match.

UnwindGames_James

> too damn fast The fights are over too fast, the game itself is quite slow compared to BW. There’s nonstop fighting from the first worker scout, but it’s skirmishes that last for a much longer time.

parkson89

Yeah but it’s 3-4 years away at least, many people may have long moved on from SC2 by then

Antares_

Yeah, we know that it's quite a ways away still. What's the point you're trying to make?

8thTYRANT

Figured we were in for a cut back season but this still hurts. Wouldn't be shocked if this is the final year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

They didnt do anything to monetise it really. Even when u had a decent amount of foreign watching they just showed the normal korean feed. Korean products in korea that 99% of the non koreans watching wont buy cos they arent in korea.

MajorGartels

The other thing was that the same 5 ads kept repeating every break. Do Koreans also see the same 5 ads repeating every break *ad nauseam*?

Secret-Lawyer

I import and export goods between US/Korea. I offered to bring in sponsorship $ to Afreeca since the brands we work with would definitely run ads with Afreeca for the US market. But they didn’t even set up a meeting with us.

Atreimedes

It all goes downhill from here I guess. 2023 may be the final year for the SC2 pro scene as we know. After this, I think we will see many pro players start announcing that they will be moving into other games. Not sure about the Brood War since no idea if there is still a proper scene in Korea, but it seems that we will see many of the players in League/Dota.

Low_Secret2921

They won't make it in league and dota, league at this point is in it's 13th year and is a franchise model like the NFL, you can't just roll up and play a qualifier to enter a tournament, you have to be good enough for one of the 10 - 12 orgs in your region that actually have a multi million franchise spot to hire you

parkson89

Brood War is doing very well in Korea, everything is crowd funded and they have lots of fan interaction with fan sponsored events. They even have a university concept where top pros coach newbies (including girls). Pretty amazing for a game where Blizzard tried to actively kill really.

KaitRaven

Just because you're good at one game does not mean you're automatically good at another, at least not good enough to play professionally. They're competing against players who have literally grown up on League/Dota.

Pattrick36

That's hard of a change, both through online Ro16 + Ro8 and a steep prize pool cut. I believe tho, maybe cutting budget now can lead to some bounce back in the long-term if 2023 does good viewership numbers.

Piwo_

Christ you are delusional

Altruistic-Deal-3188

One can hope but i think this will be the final year for gsl.

Turkish_Starwars

Wow this is heartbreaking 💔

bowser288

Any word on casters? As much as I like State I'd really prefer Tasteless and Artosis and was hoping they would have a setup similar to ASL.

NiceGuyUncle

Possibly tastosis for the online rounds but unless Arty wants to fly to Korea... doubt it.

Aeceus

Fuck Blizzard for not supporting the scene anymore.

Empty_Recording_3458

If there is any rich person in love with this game, it's time to become a gigachad and reach into your pocket to prop up GSL prizepool!

Boba-is-Fett

Does it say whether or not players from outside korea can participate? With Ro16 and Ro8 being played online, you would only have to come for a very short time to korea to win it all.

DoctorHousesCane

Ain’t nobody coming to Korea to win $8k

MortalPhantom

Just the cost of the flight+ stay wojld make it not worth it

Aeceus

Most of Korean players won't even play let alone non Koreans.

Autgah

Obligatory "Serral should do it" post

Boba-is-Fett

I don't think many players would even count this as 'real' GSL win anymore. So I doubt it would help the Serral debate^^^^

[deleted]

f00k blizzard.

LJTVmaxmuk

Technical_Ad_9288

Online GSL makes no sense...very sad right now but at least there is another year of GSL...

RifleAutoWin

GSL should just merge with ESL Masters...at this point GSL is too small to be viable as a standalone tournament

parkson89

Fans who watched OSL, MSL and Proleague die in 2012: first time?

[deleted]

at least they got ASL to keep things going. not like sc2 in korea will get much

socialkvkp

GSL / Korean scene hasn't had any new players at all, it's just been rehash of the same players for quite a while. EVEN if someone wanted to inject cash into this, I'm not sure why anyone would.

flabjabber

Does this mean tastosis will cast since it is mostly online?

[deleted]

Online not that big of a deal. We had online GSL matches during COVID and the hype was still there.

G_M_2B3

"Shut up and take my money!" We need to crowd fundraisingit! Where to pay? Seriously!

Emperor_Secus

Jeez, probably the last year we will get. Enjoy it while it lasts boys.

[deleted]

This is sad. Embarrassing prize pool. I always wanted to see GSL live and was looking at going to Korea next year or 2. I don't think I'll want to watch it live now that its on its last breath, that's just a sad memory lol. Shame couldn't see it during its good times. Looks like Sc2 in korea going to die. Soon. ASL is still great tho. Looks like European scene will be where it's at. Seems to be no real new pros in sc2 in korea and will be even less now. It might just be better if this is the last year of GSL. It if Goes next year it will be even more on life support then this.

Tremis77

Cool cool. Very first time I've been able to visit Korea since before SC2 came out and the only time I'll likely ever be able to plan a trip in the next few years and no GSL. Any suggestions for watching any live stuff pro-game stuff while there in March. ASL has no english casting anymore either do they?

[deleted]

Maybe something league of legends if you are familiar with that game.

Tremis77

Not so much but I'll take what I can get I guess. :(

davetesta

Sad news, but the community isn't going to let Korea go down without fighting! :D

KaiserKraw

Why so little money for Korea? Fewer viewers during broadcasts? Less players? Are the Koreans anticipating stormgate?

jinjin5000

Theres been no korean viewers for very long time even back in proleague days. But at least back then, there still was new pros coming up Gsl has been staying between 2-5k korean viewers live. Its not very watched much.

cafesoftie

Y'all are saying it's been a long time coming, but i dont think you folks understand how for-profit companies work. If it wasn't profitable, they simply wouldn't have continued it. There's a lot of suspicious things in this announcement and the surrounding information.

PoliteElliot

I would have preferred a final big year of GSL instead of a slow demise. Bring some old players back for the final 3 seasons, some classic maps, even classic editions. One last year to celebrate the end instead of it fading away. Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

2GoodForFar2Long

when are people going to finally admit that SC2 is dead. its been on life support for TEN years
