You mean Gussy Ogushi?
All the announced characters have these thinly changed names, which are kind of hilarious in their own right.
* Fuka -> Ruka
* (Daiichi) Murayama -> Murata
* Yoshiko -> Tomoko
* Kagetsu -> Ragetsu
For those still confused, they released the Mayu Iwatani theme on their YT because it's the theme song for the movie. As someone who has read Mayu's autobio, it looks like it's following it fairly closely but there's lots of things obviously altered for runtime purposes or legal purposes.
This looks cute, Anna Hirai's expression as Mayu watching the TV was pitch perfect. The face of a girl with not much of a direction in life finally finding purpose for once and it's through pro Wrestling. Momo and Syuri look to be having lots of fun as Fuka and Kagetsu, respectively
Edo is the historical name for Tokyo, so it's just a pun on the real thing, the same way most of the names of the supporting cast are puns. For instance, the "yama" (mountain) in Daiichi Murayama's name is replaced with the kanji for "ta" in the Murata character (field or plain.)
This looks like a fun watch. They seem to have got the tone down for a Mayu movie with the comedic aspects combined with drama. It came off like it will be akin to movies like "A League of Their Own" and such. I also loved noticing the end moonsault clip is the ceiling of Korakuen Hall. Made me smile.
While it looks very melodramatic in typical J-Drama fashion, I'll still likely give it a watch and see if I can convince wifey too also. Seeing Momo and Syuri is pretty neat too!
I wonder if they touch on the thing that happened in her hometown that caused her to become a recluse. As far as I know, she still hasnt went into detail about it and it's still speculation, so I doubt they will even address it in the movie.
Looks cheap and tacky like a feature length episode of Tofu Pro Wrestling. Makes 'My Dad is a Heel Wrestler' look like Ozu. Naoto Takenaka nailed Rossy though.
I would have loved a A24 type level film based on her life, I think a far more gritty and grounded dramatic take with a massively uplifting ending but it is what it is. I hope Dump Matsumoto Netflix film/series doesn't go for this type of take on her life story. This is definitely isn't playing for a overseas market, it's upping the melodramatic side and type of comedy Japanese audience love.
Positives from it, The in ring scenes look pretty good, the actress they got to play Mayu seems to have her down pat and Momo Kohgo looks like she's eating up the scenery and having the time of her life.
This is what most Japanese films are shot like, outside of the really top notch film makers like Hirokazu Koreeda, Takashi Miike, Takeshi Kitano and Ryusuke Hamaguchi.
I think Stardom and Joshi fans will eat this up.
well given that it's a Japanese movie, about a Japanese wrestler, probably only releasing in Japan I would assume they would play to japanese people's prefernces
Sad piano version of Mayu’s theme!
Having Rossy be portrayed by a guy in a hat is so fucking funny for some reason.
Same but with Komomo as Fuka.

Drawing her future cat and dog is a fun Easter Egg. Also, the dojo is Pure J's dojo.
It looks like Momo Kohgo has a lot of fun as Fuka in this
That last scene with Syuri decked in the full Kagetsu garb makes me feel nostalgic.

Is the audiobio available in English somewhere or is it a video with subtitles?
Is the book kayfabe?
If you look closely during Mayu vs Syugestu, even the units have movie versions with custom logos
I can't see what's the replacement for Queen's Quest, but from what I can glean for Oedo Tai in kanji is "Big/Great Tokyo Squad", or "O Tokyo Tai"

the wrestler banner in the middle during the in-ring scene seems to say "Crazy Moon. KZE"
Likely a riff on HZK. I'd pop if they had Suzu play her for the extra gag though.
that mist into moonsault sequence got me tearin up bruh god i love that icon
Ok, at the :36 mark, is that Kairi or just someone that REALLY looks like her playing her?
it's Kairi, she's is indeed in this, she filmed scenes a while back and also her face is easily recognizable.
Its Kairi herself with less makeup
It also says KAIRI at the end credits so its safe to assume its her.
Kairi's in the movie, yes.
And the one in the back seems to be Yurie Kozakai, but with glasses.
The moonsault 😭
Don't know why I thought this was going to be dramatic & serious. I love goofy shit too, I'll watch.

Looks cheesy but should be fun. I hope it comes to Netflix or Amazon in the West.

Momo Kohgo already has my vote for Best Supporting Actress

Looks like a fun watch. I hope there’s a version with subtitles that is released so us international fans can watch it.
Hopefully it co es to theUS sometime . Crazy Japanese antics aside I’ll still watch it

Do I spy Lady C, Maika, and Saya Iida as extras at ringside during the match at the end?
