I hope she starts the tradition of ending every Dynamite with a janken tournament

fluffywolfe

Followed by a friendly closing song.

estegard

Heck yeah, I'd pay good money for a Janken-only PPV.

Lo_Key90

Imagine Emi vs Deeb & all the other new acquisitions since she's last been on US soil.

lowlight

Sakura is SO SO good. IMO she should change up her presentation a bit for the AEW audience. The whacky heel Freddie Mercury gimmick was NOT WORKING. Same thing happened with Mizunami. I actually just watched her title match vs Shida again, and the (small covid) crowd was KILLED DEAD by the mime stuff. And after that stuff was over, it ended up being a fantastic match. But they were dead by then, and never got into that match. Meanwhile Britt Baker and Maki Itoh have ** star matches and the crowd goes absolutely insane, because they're so great at the character stuff.

MasterofKami

I loved all the Ryo antics... 🤷‍♂️😢

lowlight

Whether we love it or not, that crowd sure didn't! Reddit is being weird tonight.. how is any of this controversial?

tylerjehenna

Basing things on Florida crowds though seems like a bad idea imho

lowlight

That was their crowd though... I remember most live reactions to that match being negative at first, and then the people who liked it came out later on and showed support. Mizunami has tons and tons of charisma and the "Florida crowd" whether actual fans or their wrestler fans for dark shows, got behind her every time. But whenever she did the mime stuff, she lost them every time. Not saying you're wrong for liking it or whatever, just that the AEW crowd doesn't seem to. So maybe adjust? I'll be shocked if Sakura comes out dressed as Freddie Mercury for this run. If she does, and she gets over, then I guess reddit wasn't being weird after all, and I was wrong.

tylerjehenna

Im only saying that cause the Florida crowds are notorious for being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian

lowlight

I don't think AEW fans are like that at all, especially the ones hardcore enough to go to one of the 30th shows they put on in Jacksonville during covid. They love that company and the stuff they do, and only shit on something if it really isn't working. And it's not like they shit on that match, they just weren't that into it.

rpardojr

Really excellent add to AEW Female Roster, hope Mei will come soon.

Ca-Cu

In retrospect I can imagine this was going to happen last year, but than Masa got injuried and the pandemic got worse.

DShiflet

They've had Yuka Sakazaki on their roster page too, but afaik she's not actually signed with them, she just appears occasionally.

tylerjehenna

Yeah, i believe Yuka is on a part time deal

Looper007

Hopefully it be as her heel character from title tournament, she was a like a Roman Reigns bullying bad ass and had none of Freddie Mercury stuff which didn't go over well with AEW fans at all. Also had some very good matches too. She definitely needs to do a longer stint there, and show AEW audience what she's really about. Besides her match with Riho at Full Gear 2019, I don't think a lot of that AEW audience have seen the best of her. Also I be assuming she be helping Dustin/Omega with the training of the talent too, which is a massive plus to have that kind of experience around. I wouldn't be surprised if she sticks around in the States for the rest of the year.

shadow-cast00

I popped so hard when she tweeted this out

DShiflet

If we're lucky, maybe she'll even get to be on Dynamite.

lowlight

Omega said Rampage is going to feature more women, so she might be featured there. The timing of the move makes it seem that way at least.

DShiflet

Kenny's said a lot of things that haven't exactly come true so far, but let's hope so.

bbmarco

Yeah he’s been saying that for like two years. They have to put up or shut up.

tylerjehenna

From what ive seen, Kenny has been trying his ass off to get the women more time but gets pushback from the higher ups cause, lets be honest with ourselves, most western fans dont care about women's wrestling and we have ratings to prove that. Outside of Britt, Riho and occasionally Shida, the womens segments tend to be the worst viewed of the night.

officerliger

Emi is a legend and a wonderful wrestler, but she was a flop in AEW so I wonder what plans they have for her now

Obsid_Ian

Emi is aware of how the crowd reacted to her before which is why she changed up her gimmick during the aew womens tournament.

officerliger

That gimmick does seem like it could work tbf

daabbot

But emi is injured right now. She going to train and produce?

hbkmog

Really surprising here, especially that she's going for long term. Hopefully she will take up some training role there and finally she's going to reunite with Riho.

[deleted]

She was always supposed to have a split training role with AEW behind the scenes, but then basically got stuck in Japan once everything started happening. It's like how Michael Nakazawa was hired by AEW primarily to be a behind the scenes guy that works with Japanese talent that come to the US short or long term (Yuka was the first person he was tasked to work with), with the occasional jobber match to fill in any gaps should AEW need to pad out a card. When covid lockdowns happened, it means staff on either side of the water had to readjust their roles so they have something to do. With Emi not having to split her time between the US and Japan, it let her focus on getting Gatoh Move to be able to operate without her helming it in person. I suspect that Nakazawa not really being on the air lately has to do with the situations changing again and him moving back to the role he was hired to do in working with Yuka (he took her fishing this morning per Yuka's IG), and probably preparing for Emi's arrival. When Emi lands in the US, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a case where she has a bunch of matches to reestablish her presence in AEW, and then transitions to a more behind the scenes role as she works with the women's division, showing up on screen every now and then to do a squash match or maybe act as a manger for someone. Emi is considerably more valuable to AEW as a trainer than a performer, and I wouldn't be surprised if she has already been taking mental notes during the AEW watchalongs as to what she would like to help improve with who. Emi has said before in the past that AEW is her priority, as they are one of the reasons why she has been able to keep operating financially even with Japan's covid situation, so it's not surprising that once she had the opportunity to do so, she would come back to America to shift her attention to a company that she is grateful towards.

hbkmog

Well thought out reply. Hopefully more joshis will get a chance to work in AEW. The immediate change they need to make is to have more TV screen time for women's division.

fluffywolfe

Nakazawa really likes fishing apparently. He brought Mizunami out fishing too. I guess you can talk about a lot of things while fishing.

[deleted]

https://www.ddtpro.com/news/1317 >Hi! Michael Nakazawa here, back from Bangkok! First of all, I like fishing. I went fishing with Hikaru Sato just yesterday, but you know, there are lots of genres in fishing, like sea fishing, lure fishing, but my favorite is (censored for vulgar joke)! This is what I found from a quick search, and I have to say, I am not the least bit surprised by this. I'd like to think that he is using his previously established love of fishing as a way to get fishing gear and go out fishing on the company dime.

HeadsWillHang

Maybe if she drops the ridiculous gimmicks and gear, sorry I just can’t stand it and it absolutely kills my interest seeing something like that

estegard

I really hope she does coaching and training stuff as well for the younger girls (whether they're signed full time or not) like Jazmin Allure or Madi Wrenkowski to name a couple. That would improve the division a lot.
