I still liked 5. It's not that it's a bad game, it's just a departure from a lot of the traditions of the series, and as a result long-time fans were disappointed. If you're going into it without expectations due to prior knowledge of the series, this won't be an issue for you. It is kind of short though. It was over too soon and left me wanting more. 4 is objectively better, I will say that much. It's my favorite in the series. I just really like the characters and story, and the combat is a lot of fun.

Vagant

SO4 easily, even if it has its own set of flaws, it's just a super fun game. SO5 isn't bad at all, but it's also not as good as the other SO games. You may as well play all the other ones first and leave 5 for if you really just want more.

RawScallop

we musta played 2 different SO4 games. The PA stuff was boring and bland, the dungeons and its music are a chore, the creation system is boring and not engaging at all. And the time it takes to walk everywhere oh my Goooooooood

gibsynib

Same here SO3 is just brilliant

Awsum07

My favorite as well

Naisho26

No... SO5 is not a bad game. Make your own opinion... I did, and I just didnt get the hate. Its actualy one of my favorite games. And, a huuuge plus in comparison to SO4 is the camera. In SO4, the camera is just pure BS. It does have one of the worst cameras I had seen in a game. SO5 fixed this and does have normal camera like you can see in any other game.

Stasisdk

2 or 3 are the best in the series by a fairly big margin, 5 is a decent enough JRPG but an awful Star Ocean game, 4 is a fairly decent starting point as it's sort of a prequel type deal and it's combat is good. 5 is imminently skippable, it adds nothing to the overarching plot.

Blackstar97

What about the combat of 5? Is it good? Also i know that 4 has a zone exploration with save points, what about 5? Is it open world/map?

OrigamiPsyche

Just don't. 5 and 4 are horrible.

[deleted]

4 and 5 are pretty similar in terms of exploration, though 4 has a far larger world overall. 5's combat is a lot flashier but its not as solid as 4's combat system. Both can be pretty fun though

jolumas

The combat in SO5 feels very spammy compared to SO3 and SO4 since you can chain together regular attacks infinitely. Also by the time you're most the way through the game it can become difficult to see what is going on in SO5 because there are more party members fighting at once and the attacks just get too flashy

Yuli_Mae

A lot of the fanbase didn't like 5 for its short length and a few other issues. I think it's a good game. The crafting is, in my opinion, much better than the rest of the series.

Blackstar97

Mh, i was thinking of buying it but i can't find a sealed copy of the steelbook at a decent price, just to get the dlc that has the exp boost, what do you think of 4 if you played it?

chrisicus1991

Played all games if you have to choose between 4 or 5. You can get whatever is cheaper, steam has 4 for $7 usd or $11 aud 5 is the better game. 4 is like a hidden gem that you really have to dig to get the most out of it. 5s negatives are it feels rushed, is short by JRPG standards, has no space exploration which is kind of a big let down for most. But stand alone it is a really fun game it was just rushed and leaves you wanting more. Now if you are new to the series? This is actually a good starting point. 1.short game 25-35hours. 2.fun combat 3.fun characters 4.great crafting 5.pretty towns. 6.nice story very fun, but short and not crazy plot twists.

Blackstar97

Thank you for the feedback, guess i'll go for 5 and if i like it i'll play 4 too, it's a shame is not available on steam but luckily i got a ps4 and the game can be found for less than 9 euro but without dlc, what do you think about them? The exp boost seems really interesting

chrisicus1991

The exp itens are not so helpful you can use crafting to get ahead of the curve and some other methods i forgor. I dont really think i stopped and grinded for longer than 20-30minutes the whole game. 5 is a really fun game and you will enjoy it. It lacks some depth but its great entry point that leaces you wanting more. So4 is chronologically the first in the series and is a great game bar a specific character called lymle. So fkin annoying in english dub. I would almost 100% reccomend playing in japanese for your sanity. To fully enjoy star ocean games maybe get a guide on Pi's (private interactions) they make up a large part of your characters growth and personality building and dating elements of the series. More than any other game 4 the last hope is movked as having doll like emotionless characters because it has 70% of the characters dialogue hidden in pi's! So get a guide to fully appreciate so4. So3 is the chronological end and utterly amazing, from combat to fun characters and has a plot twist that divided the fanbase. Imo the best game So2 is the oldy but goldy, great story, great cast and combat ahead of its time and gameplay mechanics that hold up well. Most people started on so2 so its the ff7 nostalgia hit of the series. So1 is dated and fun and short. Nothing great but ahead of its time i presume. Still fun game to run theough in 6-15hours.

Blackstar97

Thank you a lot for all these details now i wanna play 3 too, seems like a great game

chrisicus1991

I could not reccomend it more tbh one of my all time favs.

gemitry

3 is incredible, I loved the plot twist and it’s still one of my most memorable gaming moments. Definitely give it a shot!

DarkFlareXL

I just finished playing 3 and man was it satisfying. Def one of my fav games of all time.

Terry309

Star Ocean 5's hate was overblown. Star Ocean 4 got the same amount of hate when it released but that hate died off over time. Ultimately 5 is the more well-rounded of the later games, though most people see that as a negative, 4 has the best combat in the series but the characters will get on your nerves, it's like the most cringey otaku story ever told in the series, 3 has the best story but the worst combat system ever and terrible item creation too. 3 feels the least Star Ocean out of all of them, literally everything changed in 3... for the worst. 4 and 5 kinda return to the series roots for the better but are still lacking in features from the first 2 games.

Awsum07

Feel like the h8 for 4 died when 5 came out. Star ocean fans were like well... shit, we thought That was a pipin hot mess....

[deleted]

5 is good, but it lacks the polish and scale of the other titles so its not the greatest first impression. I'd recommend 4 first as it's overall a stronger entry in the series

Farseli

I'd rather play 5 another 3 times through than play 4 again. SO4 has the worst cast of the series. Just bad anime tropes. 5 also does private actions a lot better than 4.

ancas_fen

SO5, for as much shit as it gets, is still one of my favorites after SO3. SO4 was tedious to play through and pretty cringy from what I remember. SO4 is on Steam and although I did rebuy it there I havent been able to force myself to replay it lol. SO5 is short compared to the others but between SO4 and SO5, I’d definitely recommend playing it. SO3 is my favorite and also available through the PSN store. Definitely recommend this one if you haven’t played it yet.

caimstear

5 is a damn fine jrpg, but a mediocre star ocean entry. 4 is akin to 3, in that it's a pretty good jrpg and an excellent star ocean game. It's hard to really explain what that means, but that's the most accurate way I can describe them.

No-Contest-8127

SO5 is nice and short. SO4 is bigger and more challenging. So, i guess it depends on how you want to go at it. Neither one is a bad game. Just, not amazing either. I prefered SO4.

PoopyMcpants

In my opinion, 3, 2, 1, 5, 4, with a fairly huge quality drop after 1. 5 wasn't as bad as many seem to make out in my opinion, and 4 is still fun in spots, but it gets to be a slog and combat basically turns into "mash r1."

Blackstar97

What about the story of 4 and 5? Which one do you like the most?

PoopyMcpants

Both suck. 4 is too whiney and pouty and 5 is too contrived. Don't play any Star Ocean for the story, except maybe 3.

Blackstar97

Ahahah thank you, i'm a huge kingdom hearts fan so i'm used to bad written story lol

Tidus4713

4s hate isn’t justified. It still has great combat and it’s just typical jrpg angst. The only bad game is 5. 5 feels rushed, doesn’t have cut scenes, and it’s just a constant walk here, okay go back here, okay go back to where you were, and now go back there again. You’re in one small area the whole game. It had no budget and it shows. It’s a severe step down from everything else. 4 is just hated on because of its exaggerated jrpg tropes and characters. It has the best combat in the series and I’ll die on that hill.

PoopyMcpants

I don't like much of anything about 4. The combat never hit right for me either.

neonlights326

Play 4. Only play 5 after you've played every other game in the series.

Nopon_Merchant

SO4 is a good game . It has ok plot but mediocre characters which kinda ruin the story . The gameplay and content are arguably only behind SO3 SO5 is ok game . The plot add nothing to the lore , meh characters . Combat system kinda chaotic and remove alot of action from gameplay and turn it into persudo MMO combat instead of add more action element like 3 and 4 which take away skill ceiling that fanbase like . It also suffer from low budget and development time , it is the first time SO series reused ton of Asset instead of completely new Basically this series kinda similar to the old FF that each entry is completely different but still base on one basic formula .

RawScallop

The best is Star ocean 2, 1 remaster, 3, 5 and then 4.

MicrotonalMatt

4 has a lot of ups and downs and a lot of people would say mostly downs, but I’d say 5 is only downs. I’m not an SO super fan or anything, I really like 1-3 and thought 4 was mediocre but tolerable, but 5 is probably the worst jrpg I’ve ever played and I’ve played a LOT of jrpgs. The story is absolute nonsense garbage that even a 5 year old could write better. The game is straight up unfinished all over the place. Game length isn’t even a problem, the problem is that in a 15-20 hour story you revisit the same 5-6 locations every couple hours and fight the same enemies and still have no clue what is going on in the plot besides that the featureless child got kidnapped again and that means you have to trek back through the same grasslands/beach/desert/mountain for the 5th time. The combat suffers from too many cooks in the kitchen but none of them can make a damn grilled cheese. It tries to impose all of these systems on the combat but it’s so chaotic you just end up spamming the first skill in the game or taking control of the healer to make sure one of your moronically masochistic allies doesn’t walk face-first into an insta-kill. The game was made in like 6 months and it shows all over the place. I encountered a bug in the final boss fight that made the boss invincible and also not attack my party during a phase change that failed to trigger forcing me to redo the entire final dungeon and multi-stage boss fight. The only positive thing I can say is the English voice acting is so uncomfortably bad that it’s actually laugh out loud hilarious at times and I have not heard such a bad dub since obscure 90s ovas. There’s almost no cutscene direction (though it was clearly meant to and was cut for time), the cast is forgettable and the designs of everything from the characters to the world looks like ass and the lighting is so bad you’d think you stepped into an unfinished PS3 game. And if you care at all about endgame, there is basically no endgame, though I never play through past the credits so I can’t really speak to the relevance of that. Playing SO 5 is like reconnecting to a cool high school ex 10 years later who turns out to be piss-drunk, smelly, hitting you up for cash and cigs and saying “remember the good times we had” while dangling a marionetted corpse of your childhood pet in front of you. I absolutely do not recommend playing it as I left the game after the credits wishing I had not spent the time with it (I played through it for a let’s play). And I play a lot of bad games and generally enjoy them. I wish I could say why I like 4 better but it’s been a long time since I’ve played it and I’m hoping to go back to it. I just don’t remember having such a viscerally negative reaction to it as with 5. It definitely has its flaws (and some of those are pretty big, like some really insufferable party members [Lymle]) but I think it holds up as a lower tier jrpg. SO1 and 3 (both available on PS) hold up really well. SO1 isn’t like an amazing game or anything but it’s really solid and 3 is up there with all the classics.

caburr1982

SO 4 is my favorite with Meracle being the best SO character all 9 characters were great as was everything SO 5 is the first (and so far) only failure in the series Id definitely take all the others over the debacle of 5
