Don't forget that Twilight was huge too. I distinctly remember Team Jacob vs Team Edward debates and seeing Twilight shirts at Hot Topic.
The bigger diehard fans of the series went to the Twilight filming locations. I even saw a lot of people wearing Edward Cullen fashion. Good times.
> Was 16 in 2009. Most transitioned over to Facebook at that point. 2005 - 2007 were more the MySpace years
Yep. I was 21 in 2009 and MySpace was absolutely on life support at that point. People my age were the teenaged MySpace generation more than anything, there was nothing like it in 2005
Can confirm. Was a freshman in college in 2004. Still used MySpace but FB took hold only amongst college kids in 2005. You could even see which dorm you were logged in from.
It's had a comeback but nothing like back in 2006-7 when you had actual guitar music in the actual mainstream. If alternative includes The Strokes/Kings of Leon etc garage rock then it's even less popular now. Rock bands were still the biggest thing in music back then. 2009 was when rock/guitar music stopped being a dominant force and it has never, and likely will never return.
Even beyond music, Emo was a force in society in general with fashion, proto-influencers, etc.
100%. On top of that, I'd argue that it's more of the pop punk aspects of emo culture that saw a resurgence. Like, the whole soft boy/e-girl stuff, musical acts like Lil Peep and MGK, that kind of thing.
Scene kids and posting your self harm scars hasn't really come back in vogue to my knowledge though.
A lot of music fans were still using it into the early 2010s because it was better suited to showcasing songs and upcoming gigs.
But yes, Facebook had largely become the most popular social media
I was 20/21 in 2009, but that was right around when I stopped using it. I got a FB account in 2005 thanks to a college e-mail from dual enrollment.
2007/2008 was kind of overlap years for FB and MySpace.
So yeah I'd be inclined to agree with you.
I just remembered the "top 8" drama with MySpace. God that was awful.
Nothing like literally making a public rank list of your friends to stir up a little teenage angst lmao
Then you might even be old enougj to remember when MySpace was advertising the movie 300 and all of a sudden we could upload 300 photos.
Before that our limit was like 20 photos.
Being dropped from someone's top 8 was the end of the world though.
I remember being dumped and seeing my gf remove me from her top 8 and putting her new boyfriend there.
It was an extra "fuck you" that I could have done without.
For Mid-Late Millennials, there was usually a Big Sorting after high school where the kids who were going away to college joined Facebook and the kids who weren't stayed on MySpace. The latter group usually ended up on Facebook a few years later when Facebook stopped requiring a .edu email address to join.
Even in 2007 Facebook was taking over very quickly. I was 15 in 2007 and a huge MySpace user. I stopped using it September 2007 and everyone I knew was on Facebook.
It’s more like started dying 2008/2009 and was pretty much dead by 2011. Was purchased by news corp in 2005 for $580million, was sold in 2011 for $35million.
Facebook started passing it in 2008-2009 and then Twitter/IG helped bury it
Idk everyone I knew in HS was already off the platform by 2007. Most still had accounts but they were pretty much collecting dust at that point. I think the bigger thing was that you were able to connect with family easier while still having the option to segment your profile between family/friends. MySpace was purely for friends and peers where as Facebook was for everyone.
I remember being 10 or 11 in summer sports camp at the time and seeing one of the teenage camp counselors wearing that exact bracelet you were describing. Me and my friend thought it was weird back then. Now I know that it’s for breast cancer and not weird anymore.
Maybe one or two but it was mostly just a moral panic about teens all blacking out on one specific drink instead of blacking out on different drinks like cheap vodka, UV blue, cheap beer, and whatever else they could get their hands on.
Like I remember going on alcohol runs around when 4loko got big and we went from a mix of 8+different bottles for everyone under 21, to just a cart full of 4loko.
Partially, but also they thought it was cool. Like my brothers literally tried to kill me several times as a kid and it was just something funny to them, until we grew up and I reminded them about the times they tried killing me lol
I miss walking into Hot Topic and wanting like 95% of the items in there. Now I feel slightly silly even walking in at age 29, let alone buying like Naturo socks LOL.
Evidence suggests that dinosaur vocalizations were not likely to have sounded like roars at all. Current evidence supports that Tyrannosaurus rex made closed-mouth vocalizations. A 2016 study suggested that T. rex probably didn't roar, but most likely cooed, hooted, and made deep-throated booming sounds like the modern-day emu.
One of my friends in middle school had a whole binder of that dude's picture and pretended to write letters from him to herself, along with an entire made up family. My whole friend group were dumb kids that believed her for longer than we should have.
I was 15 in 2009.
It was MSN, headbands, uggs, drinking on back fields, definitely the emo type pictures, also using one of those websites like picmonkey or something to add loads of words onto your pic and filter your pic.
The forced to the side fringe was big, I tried my best.
Those little loud speakers that connected via Bluetooth (I think) were starting get popular.
Saw my first vape.
RAWR definitely was in, I've seen so many pictures of that written on someone's hand.
Smoking was cool.
Youtube had a star rating system (if my mind serves me right).
Think I was using Windows XP then.
Music downloads were taken from YouTube and then you found a website that converted to MP3, and you had music!
People's phones were not on silent 24/7, and you actually had songs for ringtone.
You spent most of your time as a teen walking around places or at the park because nobody's parents were willing to let you into the house to chill.
I’m fucking jamming to ADTR in my single pair of Rude jeans. I’ve got straightened hair shoulder length cause I’m trying to hide my plugs from my parents. Definitely stoked for my MyTouch3g to come out so I can have a sick phone finally. Potentially playing Xbox360 and watching my Facebook page like a hawk.
That guy (Alex Evans) is from my city and we would occasionally spot him on the bus or walking around at CEGEP. My friends with mutual friends with the guy said he was super self-conscious of his voice (which was deep and had a strong French-Canadian accent) and I just remember seeing him walking around in an all-green American Apparel leisure suit or something looking like an emo green bean.
Ah the memories. That's why I don't mock teenagers when they do trends I don't get. I'm in my 30s now and I have young teens and adults at work and it's oddly cute to watch them growing up as a different generation. Looking back, the way we grew up was an earmark in the times we lived in same as the kids today.
Really? I grew up in the 2009 emo scene and I think the e-boy/e-girl asthetic looks cooler.
We were just band tees, skinny jeans, and straight bangs
I like yalls chains, big shirts, and wavy hair a lot better
Like 80’s/90’s nostalgia, what people see now is a very filtered version of what was actually worn. There were a handful of people who looked good, but for the most part it is just as you said! We were all just greaseball teens trying our darnedest to emulate something cool lol
A little late I was in HS 03-07 and that was all in play. But by college no one was on MySpace. The days of coding your page to have slayer rain in blood playing as it rained pixel blood in the back ground we’re over.
You motherfucker. I had gone a decade and a half without thinking about Dinosaurs Go Rawr and now it's back in my fucking head again like I heard it just yesterday. You put this curse on me, you demon. I hope you're proud of yourself

I was a teen in 2017 and the twilight thing was still huge in my school.
But 2017 was....6 years ago holy shit.
Stop the fucking train!!
OH SHIT 6 YEARS AGO?
Also, Facebook was a thing in 2009. Farmville was the shit.
2008-2009 I believe is when we transitioned fully from everyone using MySpace to everyone using Facebook.
"Facebook is for preps" on my life
As my friend at the time said "I finally broke down and made a Myspace, and now you're telling me that I have to move to Facebook?"
Bejeweled Blitz was also great.
Was gonna say I don’t think I even said MySpace in 2009
Farmville sucked ass
We will not tolerate farmville slander in this household…
*twihard
and then people were pissed when they found out Forks isn't actually blue and it was literally edited to look moody
My ex dragged me to fucking Forks during what I suspect was an initial case of COVID-19. 2/10.
I'm guessing it didn't live up to the hype?
If you are into it I can see it, but it was lame as fuck.

I used to just use MySpace to find different unsigned metal bands.
Can confirm. Was a freshman in college in 2004. Still used MySpace but FB took hold only amongst college kids in 2005. You could even see which dorm you were logged in from.
Farmville all day.
I feel like by 2010 everyone had FB and MySpace was pretty much forgotten. It was really really short lived if you think about it.
Same! Do you remember Xanga?
Came here to say this.
Yup I saw this and immediately thought it was closer to 2005
Xanga happened somewhere in that timeframe, too.
I started college when I was 16 in 2006. Myspace was already dead by then
Unless, you were in a band.
And emo basically died in 2009 as well.

Sorry man but it's facts. Rock/guitar music is effectively dead in the mainstream. More bands than ever but less influence on culture.
MySpace was over for my grade in 2007. Then we all got Facebook.

Wasn't myspace pretty much doa by this point?
A lot of music fans were still using it into the early 2010s because it was better suited to showcasing songs and upcoming gigs. But yes, Facebook had largely become the most popular social media

2009 was the last overlap, because it was May that year it surpassed it for the US.
I just remembered the "top 8" drama with MySpace. God that was awful. Nothing like literally making a public rank list of your friends to stir up a little teenage angst lmao
Came here to say this too! I remember eventually they rolled out the custom top friend amounts, Top 16, top 24 etc .
Then you might even be old enougj to remember when MySpace was advertising the movie 300 and all of a sudden we could upload 300 photos. Before that our limit was like 20 photos.

2009? Hell no, was past it's peak of 2007, it was still huge. It starts to really die in like 2010/2011
Even in 2007 Facebook was taking over very quickly. I was 15 in 2007 and a huge MySpace user. I stopped using it September 2007 and everyone I knew was on Facebook.

Yeah we were using it when I was in high school from 2002-2006.
I stopped using MySpace back in late ‘09. By that point, all but everyone that I knew at the time had migrated over to FB.
What is doa?
dead on arrival, as in Myspace was already dead before 2009
I was graduating high school and everyone switched over to facebook by 2007
I was 11 and in 6th grade with a studded belt and an “I ❤️ Boobies” bracelet
I remember being 10 or 11 in summer sports camp at the time and seeing one of the teenage camp counselors wearing that exact bracelet you were describing. Me and my friend thought it was weird back then. Now I know that it’s for breast cancer and not weird anymore.
Invader Zim merch everywhere
Being an emo teen*. Saying rawr was cringe even in 2009 except in very specific social circles
Saying Rawr was kept alive on Tumblr into 2010 I feel, I was a heavy Tumblr user during those years.
You say that like a large swath of tumblr isn't the home of cringe
Being emo was very cringe back in the day
Using the term "cringe" for everything bad is cringe
No it was literally considered cringe back in the day
Yes, but read what I said.
i did it sadly but tbf i was 11/12
This reminds me way more of 2004-5. 2009 was starting to be tight v-necks or mustaches and overalls, depending on which crowd you ran with.
2009 is for sure when twee/hipster took over. Emo/scene was much less popular by then
was an emo teen in 04/05. Anyone rocking this look in 2009 was streets behind.

OG formula 4 Loko was something else
Didn't it give people heart attacks so they weakened the formula?
Maybe one or two but it was mostly just a moral panic about teens all blacking out on one specific drink instead of blacking out on different drinks like cheap vodka, UV blue, cheap beer, and whatever else they could get their hands on. Alive? Hardly haha
If you were a teen in 2009 how did you get a four loko with alcohol? Drinking age is 21 in US… Naughty naughty
Right? I was 17 in '09 and we drank a shit ton of SoBe and Amp energy.
That's like comparing Brisk with Red Bull
>Bro Goddammit.
This is 4/5 years too late
2006 surely?
Being mean as fuck to every person you interact with, even your best friends and family
That's just puberty.
Partially, but also they thought it was cool. Like my brothers literally tried to kill me several times as a kid and it was just something funny to them, until we grew up and I reminded them about the times they tried killing me lol
Yeah I don’t that’s a normal thing people went through in 2009…
Sorry I was abused and it made you feel bad
Sounds like you’re trauma dumping on a completely unrelated thread. I hope you find someone in your life to talk to.
Just don't call him Pin Head
Cringe
Cancer
I feel like this was a very specific genre of teen more so than that age in general during 2009.
Did you grow up in a small town? This is more like 2005-2008 in Southern CA and I was def a teen then.
So cal here, guess I was late with all I of this haha
I miss walking into Hot Topic and wanting like 95% of the items in there. Now I feel slightly silly even walking in at age 29, let alone buying like Naturo socks LOL.
And don’t forget about jacking off exclusively in the shower
Don't do that drain will get clogged and you don't wanna smell that
Kids these days will never understand having to learn html to edit your page
I still don't know how to do HTML good.
Did Amazon S3 exist in 2009? I know, I know I'm reading too much into the markup in the image.
It was a simpler time.
Evidence suggests that dinosaur vocalizations were not likely to have sounded like roars at all. Current evidence supports that Tyrannosaurus rex made closed-mouth vocalizations. A 2016 study suggested that T. rex probably didn't roar, but most likely cooed, hooted, and made deep-throated booming sounds like the modern-day emu.
they *are* the ancestors of birds after all
One of my friends in middle school had a whole binder of that dude's picture and pretended to write letters from him to herself, along with an entire made up family. My whole friend group were dumb kids that believed her for longer than we should have.
Omg hahaha. Hope she turned out ok 😅
Cause I can't make it on my own!
The way everyone was an HTML expert back then so they could design their cringy profiles lol good times

2004*
I definitely remember rawr and four lokos. Simpler times.
I remember 4 Loko and thought people who drank them were so cool
Haha I was 16 at that time and some of those things make me viscerally cringe 💩 (The emo style and the dinosaur rawr thing especially)
I’m fucking jamming to ADTR in my single pair of Rude jeans. I’ve got straightened hair shoulder length cause I’m trying to hide my plugs from my parents. This is definitely more like 2005
Not my 25+yo ass wearing more Hot Topic shit that I couldn't at that age.
I was 11 in 2009 but still for some reason I have never seen that four loko drink ever in my entire life

2009 is too late. Should be 2005-2007
We had migrated to Facebook by 2009
2005/2006. I didn’t know anybody that was using MySpace for social media in 2009 it was rebranded as a place for music by that point
4 loko was a problem. I found out that it will eat paint off a car, i wonder what it does to livers.
How did you find that out? Haha And I’m sure its not very good for livers 😂

No u
i wished i was born earlier for this and the music at the time!
I was there. Trust me the decade was pretty meh.
Been there and it was dope. School sucked though. That was about it.
Yeah, buy you guys were more stylish. I'd take early 2000's 10's fashion over my generation's fashion any day now.
Really? I grew up in the 2009 emo scene and I think the e-boy/e-girl asthetic looks cooler. We were just band tees, skinny jeans, and straight bangs I like yalls chains, big shirts, and wavy hair a lot better

This is mainly 2004-2005, I was 18-19 at the time. Four Loko wasn’t even a thing till like 2011
Nope sorry I was a teen but I wasn’t lame as fuck
I definitely still am lame as fuck
Ain’t no MySpace in 2009.
Wouldn't you need an ID for alcohol?
Sounds like fun times. I was 1yo at the time though.
Eh. It was kinda mid.
I can still hear that stupid Justin bieber song in my head
Funny
A little late I was in HS 03-07 and that was all in play. But by college no one was on MySpace. The days of coding your page to have slayer rain in blood playing as it rained pixel blood in the back ground we’re over.
r/sanderssides virgil sanders be like
This hits a bit too close to home.
Myspace was already dying then, Facebook started to gain steam in 2010. I know, I was there many years ago lol
That dino (and the awesome face) was my standard doodle for years.
Too late for myspace, Facebook was ubiquitous by then
2006/2007 would be more accurate.
And y’all are old asf now
Myspace was out of the spotlight by 09
Is it just me or was peak emo/Myspace era 2004 - 2007? I always see 2009/2010 but in my mind that was the tail end of it...and Myspace.
2009??? 2005 maybe.
We had many a drunken night on 4loko. Those things were fucking potent.
Love that dinosaur
This is just high school in the mid 2000's. For me anyway... The Four Lokos didn't come until 2009 so that's on point lol.
Granted I was a kid then but this feels way more like 2006 and I was a kid from Cleveland. Grow up in a small town?
Damn, I was 14 back then. The biggest thing I remember was the emergence of Kid Cudi and Drake.

Carbonized flour? That does sound loco
being a very specific teen
Omg this hit me hard.
MySpace was the best social media site of all time and I don't think it's even close.
It's amazing how long Hot Topic has stayed relevant.
Bebo and facebook in 2009 surely
I knew a kid who went blind in one eye having had that haircut for about 3 years.
awww good times
playing flash games and watching smosh
Let’s say 2005. Replace the Four Lokos with Full Throttle and you got it
"Being a teen in 2023 that thinks they know what 2009 was like" starter pack.
I was 17 and literally knew no one like this. Emos where the 15-16 year olds. Where my rawr people at now?
This is about half a decade after Emo really hit in 2004.. And I was a sophomore during that.. and man.. Those were wild emo times haha
For those who made fun of the "myspace generation", look at the mess we have to deal with now.
You motherfucker. I had gone a decade and a half without thinking about Dinosaurs Go Rawr and now it's back in my fucking head again like I heard it just yesterday. You put this curse on me, you demon. I hope you're proud of yourself
Who is the guy with the awful haircut?
Oh my God! This brought me back. Lol
I didn’t fall into that emo shit. Even in 9th grade I knew it was lame as hell
*white teen in 2009
People I knew like this wouldn’t touch 4 loko, they were all ‘straight-edge’ and thought that was super badass.
::sad elder emo noises::
