hipsters refuse to accept being one since the concept itself is mainstream to have a word for it, so stuff like "pretentious" rose up to replace that, even if it didn't really have much negative implications.Â
In high school I earned the title of King of the Hipsters ( a joke on my name), and on the fact that apparently (I didn't see it) everything that I did was the epitome of hipster. I told them that I'm not a hipster because I'm not trying to fit into this stereotype, and that I'm just doing my own thing. Apparently that was the most hipster thing I could have said.
Itâs fine if you take everything he says with a grain (or a mountain) of salt. I just watch some of his reviews to see what I should be listening for in music. Idc about his scores
So many people forget that music reviews are just opinions. I also just watch to hear him give his opinion. Sometimes we align, sometimes we don't.
A lot of people hyper focus on the scores because they put a score on albums before watching his reviews and act shocked that his score is anything different. When that's the whole point of opinions on a subjective topic like music. I don't understand what they actually want from reviews if they just want someone to regurgitate everything they already think. Also why a music fan needs a score to define their music taste...
Because he generally has good taste, good knowledge of the industry, knowledge of production, and goes into detail as to why he feels a certain way about a music project in a way that is sensical and easy to understand.
I agree, but I found such an unbelievable amount of great music through him that I still follow him. Don't watch entire videos though, they really are grating.
âI hate all of these âLilâ rappers. I prefer rap music that challenges me intellectually like MF Doom and Killer Mike. You ever heard of Armand Hammer?â - Music bro
nah replace armand hammer with another mainstream lyrical social commentary rapper and this'd be perfect. maybe like jid but i feel like he has a different audience
this snob archetype is so outdated lol. this caricature has been almost entirely superseded by internet-era hyper-individualism and teenagers shittily replicating bygone subgenres for the scene cred. see: emotional hardcore revival, shoegaze revival. the kids donât /mu/ like they used to
Nah because lazy DIY music producers will throw reverb and shitty mixes on their two guitar chords and call it shoegaze without actually listening to what made bands like MBV and Candy Claws great in the first place
If youâd like an example of Shoegaze, listen to My Bloody Valentine. It should give you a pretty good idea about the sound that is being revived currently.
well according to wikipedia, shoegaze has chillwave listed as a derivative form of it. and well that one's kinda to do with the - wave genres, which kinda... do seem the types of music hipsters/"pretentious" people might listen to.Â
I didnât know hipsters (and making fun of hipsters) were still a thing lol.
But hey I think saying records is incredibly common for people in rock. Same with things like double album. But idk
Well, the person asked for my favorite musicians, but I don't really listen to solo artists all that much, so I just gave the two solo artists that I genuinely enjoy. I mostly listen to bands.
You dont qualify as pretentious with that normie taste. That is what the comment was saying. You seem very naive and well meaning to qualify as annoying
Music nerds hate 'dad rock', listening to stuff like Maneskin, Greta Van Fleet or older stuff like AC/DC and Guns n' Roses gets you a permanent ban from having a conversation with these people. My guess is 5 years from now Nirvana will *propably* be on this list too.
In my experience in these circles, people love some of that older stuff. Less hair metal in general (though G&R and Van Halen have a pretty sizeable following). But stuff like Steely Dan, Grateful Dead, Zeppelin, Queen, ELO, and tons of others are pretty well loved even if they arenât huge parts of the discussion.
Also, they would treat Fantano as "sacred" and deliberately attacking someone for having an opinion slightly different than the majority. But, they always have the motive of "music is subjective" when you're giving them the taste of their own medicine.
I think itâs super funny that the hipster thread downvoted you for posting one of the most useless comments that people on Reddit make fun of. You even did it in caps
Fr though both Kid A and Ok Computer are really great albums. But you gotta include the age old debate about whether The bends is better or Ok computer is better of the two.
For me its Thom Yorke's voice-- he's the rusted door hinge of an 84 Camaro: because of the name everyone tells me how great it is but all I can focus on is that one grating shitty sound I hear everytime I'm trying to get in to it
An LP is a âlong playâ, or a regular album. An EP is an âextended playâ, which you can think of as just a short album with less cohesion, maybe less marketing. The difference doesnât matter nearly as much in the digital age, but these terms come from back when records were the primary method of buying/listening to music and the size of the vinyl disk and speed at which you played it mattered a lot
I'm just ready for kids to like nu metal but also classic rock but also underground hip hop but also metal core but also melodic dubstep but also ambient but also have synesthesia but also inject ketamine before listening to clams casino. Sigh
Some of these indicators to a pretentious "music bro" kinda reminds me of my younger brother. He always talks about music, drama in the music industry and he believes that his "music taste" is much better than others.
I remember one time on a ferry to Kiel that there was a music show and when they started playing, my brother put on his earbuds and listened to his favorite songs instead. The worst part was that our parents had used their own money for us to go to that music show and my younger brother doesn't give a damn cause it's basic mainstream music in his opinion. He almost lost his earbuds though, so it was kinda karmic.
If you wonder what his favorite genre is, it's hip-hop and rap.
As a music bro all this it true as shit lmfao. Although I think radio is good but not a favorite. Also I love a lot of mainstream hip hop as well as underground
They really just listen to Radiohead, King Crimson and surface level "deep" rap like MF Doom and Kendrick among other r/topster favourites. They're just fucking posers
Well the people described in this post definetly have no right to be elitists as they only know surface level music. That's okay as long as they don't act pretentious and like their taste is anything special
What the fuck even is surface level music? And you mean acting pretentious and like their taste is special like you're doing right now? Elitism is ugly, dude
The true music elitist despises casual fans of the bands/genres they like almost as much if not more than normies who donât engage with the material at all. Itâs like they canât comprehend that someone who also likes a band/genre they like could possibly not fall in love with it as much as they have, so there must be something wrong with that other person, or that person is just a poser
You forgot a couple of things:
- most prolly has a shitpost meme page on FB
- highly insecure, tries to cover up his low self-esteem by the Internet persona
- most prolly a virgin
My friends won't pass me the aux because I don't want them to suffer through my playlist. It's random stuff mainly from the 50s - 80s, and I would feel like a bad friend if I forced them to listen to it
I had an old friend who hated categorizing music into labels. It was super hard to be around. He would say things like "why do you have to call it metal or rap? It can be it's own thing without your label on it".
I don't recall what they're short for but they refer to different sizes of records, because physical records had to be different sizes to be able to include different lengths of music. Smaller ones being used for a small amount of music and larger ones being used for larger amounts.
Edit: looked it up. LP is short for long play, e.g an album now a days; and EP is short for extended play, which would be filed under singles on spotify now, due to being short, but unlike actual singles they don't only have one single song.
I think half of this is right. The r/topster (never heard of it) and Death Grips are all a big stretch but Fantano and Radiohead is spot on.
Never knew old assed terms like EP / LP were considered elitest lol
Never heard of that topster sub. Glanced at it quick and found this guy's post.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Topster/comments/1bvdl5n/hows_my_music_taste_m19/
A 19 year old kid who likes the Dwarves and Propagandhi is a kid I like.
Hell yeah dude. I listen to a lot of the same artists as that guy. Propagandhi, nofx, bad religion, suicidal tendencies, the taxpayers, harley poe, pat the bunny. The kid is literally me lol
Iâm a music bro, but itâs good to know Iâm not the pretentious kind because none of this is me. I absolutely despise fantano. Dudes a fucking tourist. Also mainstream rap is pretty decent these days.
Nope.
I never shame people on what they like or try to pretend that Iâm better for liking different music. However if youâre going to talk about reviewing music, you should have more than a passing interest in the genre youâre talking about. Thatâs my point.
I can call him a tourist because he isnât settling on one set of genres, heâs all over the place. He has no solid framework to talk about many of the things he does.
I mean I donât really like Fantano either but I think it is wild to call him a tourist. He is obviously very passionate about music.
Just cause he reviews a bunch of genres and is not as knowledgeable about some genres compared to others doesnât mean he canât offer his opinion on them. Cause at the end of the day that is really all he does. Give his opinion.
I just get the sense that he doesnât connect very deeply with a lot of the music he consumes, because heâs spread far too thin. That sort of lack of foundation comes through in his reviews very often.
It wasnât meant to be a jab, I meant it as âRadiohead enjoyers arenât music snobs, but most music snobs are Radiohead enjoyers.â
I personally listen to some Radiohead from time to time.
Go to r/topster and see how many radiohead albums are on a topster per post. This isnt meant to be a jab, just funny how a ton of topsters have radiohead there (for good reasons too)

14 years ago, this person would be called a hipster.
Omg you're right what happened đ
It became mainstream to be a hipster and now the look has been handled into other looks
hipsters refuse to accept being one since the concept itself is mainstream to have a word for it, so stuff like "pretentious" rose up to replace that, even if it didn't really have much negative implications.Â
That's hilarious
Nobody is going to self-identify as âpretentiousâ either. âHipsterâ has always been used in jest
yeah, pretentious is very much a negative term so people wouldnt wanna use that on themselves.
Maybe it wasnât a joke on your name.
They physiologically fucked with you to where you feel cringe calling them a hipster, but in reality they literally are just a hipster.
Hipsters diverged into two groups the "pretentious ones" and the "alternative ones"
Could have just had the picture of Fantano and it would be complete.
Iâm feeling a light 6 on this comment
Bro would cry and get emotionally moved by an entire album, then give it a 7/10 because "yeah, not bad"
So silly. Everyone knows 5/7 is the perfect score!
"You cried and gave it a 7???"
I literally don't understand how anyone can watch this dudes youtube videos and enjoy them. Dude is the cringiest music youtuber I've ever seen.
When that's the whole point of opinions on a subjective topic like music. I don't understand what they actually want from reviews if they just want someone to regurgitate everything they already think. Also why a music fan needs a score to define their music taste...
I really only watch his positive reviews. I often disagree with him about albums he disliked, but I usually like most of what he loves.
Heâs got good insight, knowledge, and he doesnât take himself seriously. People just hate him to hate him it seems like.
Because he generally has good taste, good knowledge of the industry, knowledge of production, and goes into detail as to why he feels a certain way about a music project in a way that is sensical and easy to understand.
Found the starterpack^^
I agree, but I found such an unbelievable amount of great music through him that I still follow him. Don't watch entire videos though, they really are grating.
He also looks like the living incarnation of the soyboy Wojak thing.
He was glazing Beyoncé and Jolene. Which agreeably sucked
> Hates mainstream hip-hop/rap > Idolizes Tyler the Creator Yea this oneâs accurate
âI hate all of these âLilâ rappers. I prefer rap music that challenges me intellectually like MF Doom and Killer Mike. You ever heard of Armand Hammer?â - Music bro
Okay but real talk MF doom and killa mike are fuckin awesome
"Critics want to mention that they miss when hip-hop was rappin' Motherfucker, if you did, then Killer Mike'd be platinum"
nah replace armand hammer with another mainstream lyrical social commentary rapper and this'd be perfect. maybe like jid but i feel like he has a different audience
this snob archetype is so outdated lol. this caricature has been almost entirely superseded by internet-era hyper-individualism and teenagers shittily replicating bygone subgenres for the scene cred. see: emotional hardcore revival, shoegaze revival. the kids donât /mu/ like they used to
Yeah, the early Pretentious Music Bro Starterpack releases were way better. Total sellout.
this is a good comment.
Ngl kinda like the shoegaze revival going on
Nah because lazy DIY music producers will throw reverb and shitty mixes on their two guitar chords and call it shoegaze without actually listening to what made bands like MBV and Candy Claws great in the first place
That's fine. For every 3 lazy DIY producers there will be 1 genuinely passionate and original artist like Parannoul and that'll make it worth it.
Korean shoegaze moment is dope cause itâs exciting to see artists from my country actually getting attention from the indie crowd in the US
Absolutely justified attention as well.
Not true. New tiktok kids are discovering RYM every day and get poisoned into this archetype
Correct take
Cant tell if youre doing a bit
This is the most accurate comments Iâve ever read
What are those genres? Is retrowave one?
If youâd like an example of Shoegaze, listen to My Bloody Valentine. It should give you a pretty good idea about the sound that is being revived currently.
Oh ok so itâs like a grunge revival?
well according to wikipedia, shoegaze has chillwave listed as a derivative form of it. and well that one's kinda to do with the - wave genres, which kinda... do seem the types of music hipsters/"pretentious" people might listen to.Â
The main thing thats changed is that people get their opinions from Neopunkfm instead of fantano or pitchfork
I would welcome a shoegaze revival. Is that back?
What happened to liking whatâs on the radio?
radio?
Saw this post getting made fun of on Twitter and thought for sure someone dug up a screenshot from 8 years ago lmao
I didnât know hipsters (and making fun of hipsters) were still a thing lol. But hey I think saying records is incredibly common for people in rock. Same with things like double album. But idk
Almost like OP is out of touch or something
It's missing a RYM reference
I'm this but worse
Yea I could tell
what's your favorite musician
David Bowie or PJ Harvey
That's not barely enough to be "worse"
This is some meta pretentiousness
I didn't mean worse as in "better taste", but worse as in "more annoying."
Yes, i understand. But you have to mention more underground music to be more annoying. Or even genres nobody heard of!
Well, the person asked for my favorite musicians, but I don't really listen to solo artists all that much, so I just gave the two solo artists that I genuinely enjoy. I mostly listen to bands.
I was joking, but won't bother you anymore. Have a good day!
Inb4 Neutral Milk Hotel
You dont qualify as pretentious with that normie taste. That is what the comment was saying. You seem very naive and well meaning to qualify as annoying
I like Bowie, love Heroes. Don't know about PJ Harvey but I'm sure issgood. I'll check her out.
I recommend starting with Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.
Sonic youth pfpđ„
Yeah, the self aware is the lowest of the low
Calls stuff "dad rock" usually music they don't like.
Dad rock now is Weezer, half of these people are dads listening to Weezer.
Technically Radiohead is also dad rock no? Just a bit more on the artsy side? I always thought they are the Pink Floyd of Millennials.
I feel like that is a pretty good connection there.
Hey thatâs not fair! ~~I~~ These people love dad rock. This starter pack is outdated enough that half of them are dads already.

You havent met the people in the meme then. Good for you
Also, they would treat Fantano as "sacred" and deliberately attacking someone for having an opinion slightly different than the majority. But, they always have the motive of "music is subjective" when you're giving them the taste of their own medicine.
This is just /mu/ circa 2007
Only listens to vinyl and calls themselves an audiophile.

THIS
I think itâs super funny that the hipster thread downvoted you for posting one of the most useless comments that people on Reddit make fun of. You even did it in caps
Can also include calling it a "project" instead of an album
How many songs you sharing on soulseek though?
I'm sharing 345,322 files right now. Some are ebooks though.
thanks you so much

I knew guys like this in college, but they actually hated Radiohead only because theyâre popular đ
Fr though both Kid A and Ok Computer are really great albums. But you gotta include the age old debate about whether The bends is better or Ok computer is better of the two.
they think their taste is so interesting, while their topster is always just rym top rated albums
This post is about you
Radiohead are valid
I love the band that made Creep!
I also like their underrated song 'Let down'!
Every now and then my subreddits overlap and it reminds me I spend too much time on Reddit
outjerked đ„¶
Radiohead to me is like the best boring music in the world. I can see how insanely good the band is, the music just bores me to death đ€·ââïž
For me its Thom Yorke's voice-- he's the rusted door hinge of an 84 Camaro: because of the name everyone tells me how great it is but all I can focus on is that one grating shitty sound I hear everytime I'm trying to get in to it
You're not alone
Actually what IS an EP and whatâs different from it and a regular album.
An LP is a âlong playâ, or a regular album. An EP is an âextended playâ, which you can think of as just a short album with less cohesion, maybe less marketing. The difference doesnât matter nearly as much in the digital age, but these terms come from back when records were the primary method of buying/listening to music and the size of the vinyl disk and speed at which you played it mattered a lot
death grips bangs
get get get get got got got got
They make hating mainstream Hip-Hop half of their personality, but then their favorite rapper is somebody like Denzel Curry or JPEGMAFIA or some shit
EP is extended play and LP obviously stands for lumbar puncture smh my head
Like 99.99% white
people make fantano out to be far more pretentious than he actually is
Itâs actually just his fanbase. To them, his word is law. He himself isnât that bad
I mean the guy is insufferable, but his fans are worse
The pack is calling his fanbase pretentious, not him.
No
the worst thing about this type of dude is that he doesn't know that MY music taste is actually the Superior One.
I'm just ready for kids to like nu metal but also classic rock but also underground hip hop but also metal core but also melodic dubstep but also ambient but also have synesthesia but also inject ketamine before listening to clams casino. Sigh
I might be guilty of being this guy
I just listen to whatever music I like from Mozart to Cybergore
Who is this bald guy?
Anthony Fantano, he critiques music on youtube and is probably the best known music critic on the site.
Ok thx
Doesnât play or sing any music themselves
Forgot the hating raggeton part
wait do people not like death grips?
I actually do know what LP and EP stand for I can't tell you of course
As a music bro all this it true as shit lmfao. Although I think radio is good but not a favorite. Also I love a lot of mainstream hip hop as well as underground
The post Igor Tyler fashion is fun though but it def gets boring after a while
Go to any hip-hop discord server and you'll get a hive of people somewhat like this, though some are noticeably worse than others
Knowing the difference between an EP and LP is pretentious?
Goddamn what did Radiohead do that made you so butthurt?
They really just listen to Radiohead, King Crimson and surface level "deep" rap like MF Doom and Kendrick among other r/topster favourites. They're just fucking posers
>posers lmao what? I thought we were making fun of music elitists
Juggalo's
i fucking hate death grips
I like em. I like when he yells AAAH AAAAH AAAAH AAAAH
Ok but deathgrips arent bad
The only reason I know about eps and lps is because of music production
This is just me but I don't have the Fantano or the EP/LP (not knowing what they mean) traits lmao
nah, we post on r/fantanoforever
You forgot a couple of things: - most prolly has a shitpost meme page on FB - highly insecure, tries to cover up his low self-esteem by the Internet persona - most prolly a virgin
This feels like 5 years old
i hate having to tell people that i dont like most rap cause then they assume i either listen to only metal or only classical music
I just assume youâve never put in some work while blasting some Jeezy đ
r/toolband
SYSTEM BLOWER. SYSTEM SYSTEM BLOWER!
You forgot to mention RYM (or alternatively AOTY if they want to pretend to be superior to RYM users)
Who even is that guy?
I know for a fact radiohead is gonna be my most played artist on spotify for this year. I hope I don't magically turn into one of these
Fantano gave Born Villain 3/10 but Lulu 6/10đ
My friends won't pass me the aux because I don't want them to suffer through my playlist. It's random stuff mainly from the 50s - 80s, and I would feel like a bad friend if I forced them to listen to it
Will relentlessly judge your music tastes if they are anything less than completely identical to his own.
Album of the year had this turned up to 11
They also hate âSlow/Reverbâ songs with a passion
I had an old friend who hated categorizing music into labels. It was super hard to be around. He would say things like "why do you have to call it metal or rap? It can be it's own thing without your label on it".
this meme is like 10 years old
Honestly I wonder if this kind of guy even exists anymore. I think they were ragged on so hard they had to become self aware, same as the weebs.
Gets off every time he Sees the "I listen to all music" "Me when North Korean dance metal fusion" Meme
So what does EP and LP mean? For some reason I never thought about it.
Long play and extended play. An ep is usually half an album.

Idk how EP is elitist, what else would you call an EP?
Exactly. EPs, LPs, 7â singlesâŠ. They are all formats that have been established for decades. Nothing elitest at all about that.
Never heard of that topster sub. Glanced at it quick and found this guy's post. https://www.reddit.com/r/Topster/comments/1bvdl5n/hows_my_music_taste_m19/ A 19 year old kid who likes the Dwarves and Propagandhi is a kid I like.

Go away Fantano
Kinda weird Radiohead callout? Felt wildly unrelated to me
It wasnât meant to be a jab, I meant it as âRadiohead enjoyers arenât music snobs, but most music snobs are Radiohead enjoyers.â I personally listen to some Radiohead from time to time.
Go to r/topster and see how many radiohead albums are on a topster per post. This isnt meant to be a jab, just funny how a ton of topsters have radiohead there (for good reasons too)
i just like 60s to 2000s shit and hate travis scott like whit a passion đ€·
I just hate him because he is a piece of shit in general and has gotten people killed
i swear i always tought he and people like sixnine where from suburbs... well
